"Mmm? So you can finally see cute li'l me."
The pair / alternate side to my first Shinigami flower art, featuring our favourite puffy partner~! And true to her character here are some multi-faceted flower meanings for her. Blue flowers often stand for trust, inspiration and mystery, while purple can represent royalty, elegance or magic. For our crowned Mystery Labyrinth queen, a pretty fitting colour scheme. The first flower I included here was the Balloon Flower, a five pointed star like flower than comes primarily in blue hues. It's name comes from the way it puffs up before blooming, like a little balloon, much like our friendly death god! It has a vast amount of meanings from different cultures. In general gift meanings it means endless love, honesty and obedience, some things Shinigami says she'll offer her Master. In Victorian flower language it can symbolize the desire for a friend to return. In medieval Japan it meant magic and divination, as well as the five elements. In many places in Europe it meant the fives senses, and some it simply references a pentagram. The Columbine Flower, shown here in purple, pink and blue, with white petals in one layer and coloured pointed spurs behind each. In latin, the common name comes from the word for dove, for the white petals, though it's scientific name comes from eagle, for the talon like spurs. In Celtic belief, the flower is associated with portals between worlds. The Greeks meanwhile, attribute the flower to Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love. Some interpretations associate the columbine with foolishness & innocence due to it's shape matching that of a jester's hat. Modern meanings link this flower to Strength & Wisdom, with blue for calm, pink for happiness, and purple for success, and given to show the determination to win! And Monkshood, sometimes called aconite, wolfsbane, devil's helmet, has more ominous meanings. "Beware, a deadly foe is near." It is highly poisonous and deeply entrenched in myth and legend. In Greek myth it has been said to come from the drips of the fangs of Cerberus, guardian of the underworld. Unsurprisingly it means death in many places, but also caution and misanthropy. Perhaps perfect for a death good sneering at humans who commit murder? Lastly, the roses in their various colours. Purple for fascination, enchantment or wonder, blue for mystery & the impossible, and black for death & certainty.

Info and oc related stuff Characters in the following order: Ikkon, Turzo, Zanni (in his Resurrección form, you can find his regular outfit somewhere on here wink-wink), Kenpachi Ryuya, Betsuyaku Taisuke Their stories take place in an au btw
Ikkon "Capitano" Agreda Refused his number Zanpakuto: Tiamtum. Doesn't look like a katana at all, it's a silver brass knuckle knife Resurrección: Orca. However, no special form is obtained when activated Other: h-207cm, w-about 130kg
Ikkon's animal prototype is orca, the most fearsome sea predator. I wanted to give themes to the members of my Arrancar troupe (aside from literally being inspired by theatre, circus, etc.) and settled on self-destructive attitudes and relationships☝🤓 So his theme is anger, resentment and revengefulness. Many in the troupe call him by his nickname, "Capitano", but Ikkon is not a Spaniard who came from far away like his theatrical counterpart, he has no army and in this respect, he resembles Captain Ahab who blindly hunts for his own death with his decisions. Incredibly and sometimes unreasonably vicious and cruel, firmly believing that if the world and its creatures have treated him with nothing but cruelty since his birth, he shouldn't treat the world any differently. He has no sporting interest in violence. Ikkon can have fun in the process - even dance as a mockery - but he is not interested in fair fights purely for the sake of finding a worthy opponent, so he hates when opponents try to initiate small talk during encounters. He would be much more happy if his prey would just shut up and die. Ikkon is dismissive towards everyone around him and keeps them at arm's length even when he seems to like someone, and he is more than happy with his position as a "hired force" since he refused to play a role in the troupe and kinda sticks around to find himself new things to kill time with or, well, kill. He has murdered a great number of Arrancar either for fun or because of some quarrels and dug himself an even deeper grave. Despite actually having some semblance of self-awareness, he always finds someone to blame. Technically, he's just a big, angry kid who's lucky enough to have a huge power advantage over literally all of his kin and who's is so stuck in his own anger, so limited by it that he's unable to change at this point. His views have gotten him nowhere but to an aimless, stupid and painful death, which he'd always predicted for himself, but even then he's managed to do his own thing and took the shinigami who fought him out in the process. "If I go down, you go down with me." He mainly relies on his immense physical strength, size, and good fighting ability, but he also uses Sonído, Cero, Bala, and other delights of the Arrancar form. His personal ability is blowing bubbles filled with compressed spiritual energy hundreds of times stronger than when it's just surrounding him. When they burst at his command, they release it in the form of powerful waves that, depending on the opponent's spiritual energy, can either blow their head off from the pressure or just topple them over. His Resurrección doesn't give him a cool orca-man form but works kinda like a Domain Expansion. The lack of any new physical abilities or a new form when released is paid off by the fact that Ikkon's Reiatsu at a large radius from him is so intense that it creates a pressure similar to that of being submerged deep underwater. It's called Hadal Zone (Ultra Abyssal) because of it. He can easily tinker with this pressure and change it back and forth with various rapidity, so he can give his enemy either a decompression sickness or an instant death from rupture… of pretty much everything… It's up to him, but he's more fond of killing shinigami, humans, and his kin with his own hands rather than standing aside while it's happening.
Ikkon's far more cool and talented in all sorts of things than people give him credit for. He has a very strong singing voice and sometimes sings to himself when he's alone. But nothing more than that. He's not ashamed of his talent, in fact, he takes pride in it but being the object of attention of the troupe is worse than death itself to him, so it's kinda his fault people tend to overlook things abt him. He actually finds most of the members annoying. Especially their voices thanks to his extra sensitive hearing. It gets so bad that if he were to fight shinigami in the world of the living he'd probably bawl his eyes out due to the noise pollution and not be focused enough to do anything. He also lives on the outskirts of the cathedral-like building, where the other Arrancar reside, in a cave of some sort. Not because he's not a part of the whole mess but because he feels safer and calmer in the place he's been living alone in for a couple of hundred years now, even in his hollow form. Named after two musicians - Federico Augusto Ágreda Álvarez (Zardonic) and Niko "Ikon" Lehdontie (Oranssi Pazuzu). Theme songs: Twelve Foot Ninja - Coming For You, Staind - Change, Combichrist - Throat Full of Glass, Seether - Pride, P.O.D. - Listening For The Silence, Найк Борзов - Слышу Тьму. Heavily lyrics-oriented I guess?? Whatever… Tbh he's grown on me over time and the more I think abt him the less I wanna kill him off (and Ryuya too) but for the sake of keeping the story intact, there's an alternative route where he almost dies but doesn't. Maybe I'll write it down later but first I need to tell you about Volto so ehh… We'll see I guess.

Since it's been going around, how would various pulp heroes take on the Death Note murders, and would they survive the ordeal?
Tumblr media
A couple of clarifications:
There is a possibility that Ogon Bat, who is a "God of Justice", is either already some kind of shinigami, or at least able to speak with and interact with Ryuk just fine.
The Golden Amazon and Emilia the Ragdoll could definitely kick Kira's ass and solve the case, but they absolutely should not be aware of the existence of the Death Note, that would just make things worse.
You'd think The Monarch / The Blue Morpho getting his hands on the Death Note would be an equally apocalyptic scenario but I don't think he'd even know what to do with it. He very clearly just wants to get one guy, and became the Blue Morpho so he could kill everyone standing in the way of getting that guy, and he's very clearly been putting off killing that one guy for years now. The Death Note is the solution to a problem he defines his life around trying and failing to solve. He'd be stumped.
Doc Savage, well on one hand of course he would solve the case, he's Doc Savage, if Kira was in a Doc Savage story the whole Shinigami business would have been smoke and mirrors perpetrated by criminals with access to a heart attack inducing machine with a perfectly logical explanation. On the other hand, Doc Savage is one of the only guys in here who is globally famous with his full name and face on the papers, so realistically Kira would nail him very quickly. I'm gonna split the difference by saying Doc would solve the case either way.
Nick Carter does most of the things Doc Savage does except he actually does regularly encounter weird fantastical kitchen sink bullshit on the regular, so I think he'd have a much easier time wrapping his head around the Death Note's particulars.
The Spider would not intuit the mechanics of the Death Note, he probably would not be aware of there even being a thing as a Death Note, but by the end of the story in the last paragraph he would have killed Kira one way or another, very possibly by accident. Same goes for the sword-n-sorcery characters featured there, they would have gotten their kills by the end of it (Spear would probably have the easiest time, he's just a caveman with a giant tyrannosaurus on his side and neither of them have names Light can use to kill them, he's fucked)
Six-Gun Gorilla does have a name that Light could use, but A: He would never find out, B: He would never think a gorilla would be his undoing, and C: There's a decent chance Ryuk would let the gorilla hunt and kill him because it's funny and so would be handing Six-Gun Gorilla the Death Note.
Nyctalope would probably survive Kira's usual method of execution given his heart is artificial, but I don't think he'd be able to crack the case, he's not much of a detective. A lot of these characters were chosen because they have different skillsets that don't make them as suited for uncovering this case regardless of how smart they are.
There is a decent chance that Hugo Danner would figure out Kira by complete accident, and most likely beg Light to find a way to kill him.
Nick and Nora Charles would not solve it but they'd be okay, the case would probably solve itself and they'd laugh it off.
I could also put Blue Morpho, El Sombra, The Whisperer, Black Bat and Hugo Danner in a "Would somehow make the situation worse" category.
Putting the names of the characters below the cut:
Can intuit the mechanics / Can solve the case -The Shadow, Arsene Lupin, Sherlock Holmes, Mexican Fantomas -Heiji Zenigata, Ogon Bat, Thomas Carnacki, Silver John/John the Balladeer, Sar Dubnotal -Nero Wolfe, Tom Strong, Tesla Strong, Nick Carter, Captain Harlock, Golden Amazon -Ducky (Lavender Jack), Rufus Carter, Theresa Ferrier (Lavender Jack), Emilia the Ragdoll, Carmen Sandiego, Rocambole
Can intuit the mechanics / Could not solve the case -The Spirit, The Phantom, Edison Hark (The Good Asian), Lavender Jack -G-8, Green Lama, Peter Cannon, Jules Grandin, Wesley Dodds, Judex -Indiana Jones, Spider-Man Noir, John Blacksad, John Thunstone, Nyctalope, Tintin, Solomon Kane
Cannot the mechanics / Can solve the case -The Spider, The Avenger, Doc Savage, Honoria Crabb -Assane Diop, Conan the Barbarian, Lobster Johnson, Tarzan, Dick Tracy -Flash Gordon, Professor Challenger, Red Sonja, Scrooge McDuck, Imaro -Byomkesh Bakshi, Six-Gun Gorilla, Spear (Primal), Black Terror, The Blue Morpho
Cannot intuit the mechanics / Could not solve the case -Moon Man, Green Hornet & Kato, Lone Ranger, The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh -Phillip Marlowe, Domino Lady, Rocketeer, Miss Fury, Hugo Danner, John Carter -Zorro, Black Bat, El Sombra, Shaft, Sailor Steve Costigan -Darkman, The Whisperer, Nick & Nora Charles, Crimson Clown

It was a very fun fan meeting! 🌟
Tumblr media
▼I will post a detailed report later, but for now, just some photos and brief impressions ▼
The theater where the fan meeting was held:
Tumblr media
Below is a photo taken near the theater where you can clearly see the Tokyo Sky Tree, one of the inspirations for the design of Kanai Tower:
Tumblr media
------------------------ There was a display of official goods near the entrance and many fans lined up to take pictures:
Tumblr media
The tapestry that will be a bonus for the purchase of the art book that will be released on April 2nd:
Tumblr media
------------------------ Plushies!:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
------------------------ Life-size panels of the main characters. Lots of fans lined up to take pictures of this, too, but some fans in line behind me said that Yuma looked very small. (Yes, that's right. He's only 150cm tall!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
------------------------
Overall, it is no exaggeration to say that the entire content of this event was a surprise, as there was no prior announcement of what the event would be about, but one of the most sudden announcements was that Kazutaka Kodaka would be signing autographs for those who purchased the official soundtrack at the event's merchandising. I had already bought the OST, but there was an announcement that the version signed by Masafumi Takada would be sold, so I thought I would buy one if there were any left. As it turned out, a lot of people bought the OST, probably because they could get Kodaka's autograph. And of course I bought it too.
Tumblr media
I was very nervous to talk to Kodaka directly! but it was a very good experience XD I will make another post about this later.
------------------------
As for my impression of the event, the first thing I'd like to say is that I was very impressed. I felt the fans deeply thanking the developers and voice actors for making or working hard on RAIN CODE, and the developers and voice actors thanking the fans for playing and supporting RAIN CODE. Well, it seems kind of generic when I put it into words… but I think the event clearly showed a high level of passion for RAIN CODE.
What was particularly surprising was that the guest voice actors had probably played the game properly. I expected Katsumi Fukuhara, VA for Yuma, and Sayumi Suzushiro, VA for Shinigami, to have played the game, but I was surprised that even Yui Ishikawa, VA for Halara, and KENN, VA for Desuhiko, were able to discuss the game in detail.
And what is impressive is that they all "mentioned" a sequel. When I say "mentioned", they just said they wanted to do a sequel; unfortunately, there was no announcement that they had decided to do a sequel. But I think mentioning a sequel in front of the fans carries a different weight. Also, not just once or twice, but on various topics, Kodaka hinted at the possibility of various developments in the future. On the other hand, if something is already decided, it would be a good time to announce it at an event like this, so it is a bit sad that no concrete announcement was made, but I was very happy that all the guests showed their motivation to make a sequel.
I took notes on what they talked about and will post a report with some illustrations based on those notes. The event lasted about two hours * twice (day and night), but it was packed with a lot of topics, so it's hard to put it into text properly! But it was a lot of fun, and there are a lot of scenes I want to illustrate, so I'll post them one by one.

Maka and Crona's Journey - Wasted Potential
So one of the things I have come to heavily critique the Soul Eater manga for is the way it handled Maka post the defeat of Archnophobia, where it feels like there was a whole host of interesting character moments, but because this was the point where the Manga began to spin it's wheels and had no idea how to connect it's various ideas together into a coherent whole, it ultimately leads her story to feel like a mess of wasted potential.
And after doing an analysis of Maka and Crona's relationship through the manga, i came to realise that the pieces are there to tell a very good character journey that came thiiiiisss close to being amazing, but fumbles the ball on the most important moments, of which the ending is just the final, coup the grace that ensures it's a truly terrible story at the end of the day, rather than just being wasted potential.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have always been of the opinion that Maka and Cronas second fight was where Soul Eater as a story peaked, as it represented the highpoint of it's themes and the journey of it's characters that would never quite be matched in either the anime, nor manga... But one thing I only realised when looking at what the Manga was trying to do, and how it differed from the Anime, is that the intention behind Manga Maka's journey foreward, was how, while this moment was the defining moment for both Maka and Crona, unlike the Anime, the Manga wanted to explore the negative aspects of this idea.
Maka comes to deeply love and appreciate Chrona and the bond they shared together... But this deep affection also led to Maka's biggest moment of weakness in either take on Soul Eater.
Tumblr media
Her learning that Medusa is still alive and Chrona is still under her strings.
Tumblr media
This revelation paralyzes Maka. She, the girl who during her second fight with Crona finally was able to overcome fear and be truly brave, now finds herself held back by fear. Not fear of what could happen to herself, but fear of what might happen to Crona depending on her own choices.
If she turns Crona in, there is a very strong possibility that Shinigami-Sama's wrath upon Crona will be quite brutal and swift, but on the other hand, if she does nothing, Medusa's plan will continue unopposed and she might lose Crona anyway.
And so she does... Nothing.
She turns into a coward. She's unwilling to commit to any course out of fear of where it would go.
This is great. It's easily some of Maka's best moments, but the problem comes later.
Because in theory Manga Maka and Anime Maka aren't supposed to be different characters, it's just that they go different journey's to reach the same place.
Anime Maka does not learn about Medusa the same way, instead she only learns about everything after the fact, and so has to react to the revelations in a manner that forces her to make a choice then and there... And her choice is that she will support Crona all the way, consequences and the opinion of anyone else be damned.
Manga Maka however, because of her moment of Weakness loses Crona, and they don't reunite again before near the end of the series.
Tumblr media
When Maka tries to reach out to Crona, and convince the Pinkette to come back with her home, it's a sign of both Maka's loyalty and devotion... But also an intentional backslide of her development.
Rather than confront the matter head on, Maka tries to essentially sweep EVERYTHING that has happened since they last saw each other under the rug.
Lets go home, and pretend this never happened.
It's not that Maka's words that she WILL protect Crona are empty, because they're not, but the Manga very much want's this entire scene to be a mirror to the basement scene where the two of them first bonded.
Back then, Maka left Soul behind because she understood Crona, and trusted that she didn't need him for what she had to do.
Here, while she's alone inside the church, she brought her entire team with her, that is outside just waiting to back her up if something goes wrong.
Back then she understood that to reach Crona she had to confront the problem head on, with both kindness, but also with a very firm hand.
Here she is wishy-washy and though she is kind, she has none of that firmness that was so essential in forging their bond back then.
Tumblr media
When Crona confesses to murdering Medusa, Maka, better than anyone understands how much this destroyed Crona... But she doesn't have an answer.
The confidence she once had in being certain in how to help Crona is gone.
And of course...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The girl who once walked through deadly and painful spikes to embrace Crona, now flinches away in shock, pain and fear at those spikes.
It is a remarkably powerful contrast and symbolism.
The problem... Is how we got here.
The idea is that this is meant to be where Maka fails Crona a second time, once more due to a moment of weakness, only here it's because she hasn't truly come to terms with the consequences of her own choice back then, and having mustered the strength to truly accept Crona's actions, and then go from there.
She wants everything to go back to normal, the wqy it used to be, when Crona tells her very clearly that that is impossible.
What Maka NEEDED to do here(And what should have been the climax of the story when they meet again inside the black blood) was to help Crona deal with the trauma of Medusa's murder, to help Crona realize that whatever else has happened, Maka still loves them, and that Crona is not fundamentally unworthy of that love as Crona thinks they are.
And at this she fails. Spectacularily.
It's a great sequence of events... It's a real shame then, that her character arc post Archne hasn't been about building up to this moment AT ALL!
Maka's storyline COULD have been about her dealing with depression, sadness over losing Crona, and probably more importantly than anything else, a deep, deep longing to go back to the time they spent together, to return to "Simplier days".
It COULD have been about exploring Maka in a deeply unhealthy and yet incredibly human part of her life, when the backsliding from the person she had begun to become thanks to her and Crona's bond was both painfully obvious, and clearly intentional storywise.
Even after growing as a person, that doesn't mean the way to reaching your best self is a straight road upwards. Sometimes you fall off the track, sometimes you lose sight of the goal you were seeking, and sometimes you look back and what was and feel tempted to go back to an earlier point because you are deeply unhappy with where you are now.
It's a real shame then that Maka's storyline between these points tackles absolutely none of these points or ideas for her character.
And on the moon, we see this pattern of a clear idea for a coherent character story continue, both with Maka's incredibly vicious reaction when she and Crona begins fighting, and how the plot points set up between them really goes nowhere.
Tumblr media
The idea here is that Maka is having another moment of weakness, only this time one fueled by anger and Hurt, as she beats the snot out of Crona while saying things she obviously doesn't really mean.
It is, again, an intentional backtracking on her entire character, and if you look at it from the concept stages for her and Crona's relationship it makes perfect sense.
Maka, despite her love for Crona was deeply, deeply hurt by Crona's actions both at the church, and at the moon... The problems with the execution here is:
1. Her mood between the church and here has not in ANY way been building up to this very viscious but human outburst of anger.
2. Other than rejecting Maka at the Church, Crona hasn't really done anything yet that varrants Maka being this viscious and agressive. It feels like there should have been a scene where Crona really wrecked the rest of the cast here, but it didnt happen in the final product, and so while the idea of frustration and anger reaching a boiling point on paper makes sense, in practice Maka's anger in this scene feels really overblown.
3. It doesn't really lead anywhere. This moment comes, and then it's gone, forgotten, rather than playing into Maka's final character arc. You would think Maka would have a moment where she snaps out of it and realises how bad an idea/reqction on her part this was, but no. Much like the rest of the moon fight, it's flash and no substance.
Tumblr media
And finally Maka's assession here where she informs her dad(and Black star) that Crona killed Medusa was clearly meant to be some dramatic turning point originally. The point where she FINALLY gets her shit together and realizes what she has to do... Only for Asura to regain control, and so she instead of talking this out with a hug here and now she has to break into Crona'a soul and talk there directly.
And there, you would probably expect her to have to once more go through some scenario where she has to brave painful thorns despite the pain, before embracing Crona in a hug anew, thus showcasing that Maka has FINALLY gotten her shit back together again, and has both regained her courage, but also her determination, her self confidence, from when she was at her height, and is now, finally, after a long, long period of depression and loneliness, ready to take on Azura, with Crona at her side.
You know, the logical rule of 3(one success, one failure, and then a final success as the big redepmtion to make up for our Heroines previous moments of weakness) of storytelling used to showcase both Maka's growth, her hugging Crona leading into some development where Maka finally manages to get Crona to forgive themselves for Medusa's death, and embrace the courage to face the world anew.
The pieces are all here to tell a really, really good tale of a Character who went through ips and downs, who lost something very, very important to her along the way... Only to regain it anew thanks to the bond eith the person she treasures most in the world.
She isn't perfect... But that's okay. She has the people she loves besides her, her partner, her friends, even her dad who she dinally is able to let go off her resentment towards(Which should have been the entire point of her finally wielding him in battle), and her relationship with Crona, the single most important bond she ever made with anyone through the story. Ready to take on the world.
Thst sure would have been a way better story, while also continuing all of Soul Eater's themes into an actual, thematicly coherent climax.

due to i'm feeling funky- Au where Vivia is also a Shinigami, but the difference between him and Shini is he layed low and blended in with humans, while Shini played with fire too long and got trapped in a book by one of the first ever Master Detectives
Shinigamis in this au would be like- a collective of various death-gods with varying skills and powers. Shini was one of the more careless/chaotic ones and was causing problems, so shortly after the WDO was founded a master detective was sent out to use their forte to forcefully bind her to the book of death, the WDO then used her as a secrete tool afterwards
Vivia's forte would be how he hid amongst humans- his natural form is that of a shinigami spirit like the version we see of Shini in the labyrinth, but he hid as a human by splitting it in two: a physical form that looks mostly human, and a smaller spirit form he uses to traverse the spirit world. he normally uses it to round up souls for collection as he prefers the passive life of waiting for a natural death to claim a soul, but he doesn't even bother in Kanai due to the sheer volume of them being just- way too fucking much to fuck with.
between the unusually high amount of wandering soul and the fact that souls seem to linger attached to the Kanai Ward corpses the detectives find rather than wander or leave- Vivia is very uncomfy with the supernatural state of Kanai Ward
naturally, Shini and Vivia would be much more aware of one a other in this too. i'd like to think they're either rivals and hate one another- or siblings- either way they annoy the shit out of one another

i rewatched the japanese version of the death note musical for the third time today and i just NEED to talk about how well rem’s character arc is done. because my god, her fate is foreshadowed SO well and i love how you can see her feelings for misa developing in real time.
the first song she sings in the musical is "they're only human", and she has a very clear fascination with the idea of love. the line "looking down from above / i'm intrigued by their love" is the most clear indicator of this, but mentions of love are included in various places throughout the song, which establish the theme for rem’s arc. in the beginning, she is fascinated by the concept of love but feels removed from it, believing that love is merely a mortal concept and one that she herself will never experience.
this is then reiterated in her duet with misa, "mortals and fools". misa sings about how wonderful love can be, whilst rem sings about the dangers of it, and asserts that she "never will understand it". in her view, anyone who falls in love must either be a mortal or a fool. this song goes especially hard with the foreshadowing, particularly in the lines "love can make you come alive / or take your life away", and "love makes you break all the rules".
there's a small reprise of this song where ryuk sings most of rem's initial lines, and rem instead sings some of misa's, showing the subtle beginnings of a shift in her attitude. this is where we really see her feelings for misa start to develop, which brings with it the big conflict of her arc - she knows, based on her prior observations, that love only ever ends badly. ryuk even says at the end "rem, don't break the rules", seeing how attached she's already become to misa. side note, i also love how much ryuk and rem interact in the musical. they have great onscreen chemistry and their differing attitudes towards humanity make for a nice contrast.
and rem's final song is "when love comes", which closes out her arc as she accepts that she has fallen in love with misa and starts to consider the possibility that she may need to sacrifice herself ("share a kiss and then surrender / when love comes"). there is also a very tender moment here when L has misa tied up, and rem kneels at her feet and hugs her legs. it's similar to the scene in canon where rem brushes misa's bangs away from her eyes, but takes the tenderness up several notches and it's so so sweet.
there are also so many small moments throughout that show her affection for misa, both through her general protectiveness and physical acts like putting an arm around her or touching her cheek. the way misa’s character is presented as very vulnerable and lost as a result of her parents’ death also helps make rem’s feelings understandable and convincing. when rem first sees her and misa faints, rem comments on how pure she is. it’s like rem is so jaded from her many, many years in the shinigami realm that seeing misa - a young girl with such pure, mortal feelings of love and genuine hope for the world - triggers a protective instinct in her that later blossoms into her own kind of love. but it’s bittersweet, because the reason misa has that hope and love to begin with is because of kira, and he’s the one person rem wants to protect her from most.

[Bleach 080]
I'll be honest, I forgot that the walls were made out of a special stone. I always get distracted by the part where the walls live in the sky and only slam down to ground-level sometimes. Though... post-ryoka invasion, do they ever go back up? I feel like they're down in all the bird's eye shots we get, but what do I know. They're down in all the diagrams various shinigami use to describe the Seireitei, but maybe that's more indicative of a shinigami worldview than the literal fact of the walls normally existing on the ground. I'm sure the Ruth Wilson Gilmore of the Seireitei is thrilled about every part of that sentence!
4 Questions I have:
1. Who mines the sekki-seki?
Similar to I guess... all mining... it seems like it would be deleterious to your health to be around sekki-seki, if you had any spiritual energy to speak of, given that touching it (bare-handed) would wither you and it also emits deleterious waves. When Kuukaku talks about "spiritual energy" she uses the term reiryoku. If reiatsu is the outward, exerted spiritual pressure, reiryoku is, like, the in you version--the you version, which makes it seem to me like it's not just, oh I can't attack this thing. I feel like the wall should have a Surgeon General warning sticker on it.
Option 1: Rukongai souls mine the sekki-seki. Imagine showing up in the afterlife and not even getting to die of boredom in some crappy village. You have to go TO THE MINES.
Option 2: Maggot's Nest folks mine the sekki-seki. If they get weird and warped due to exposure (despite their protective gear, which I assume the Seireitei surely invested R&D into at some point), or explode, well... Did it really happen if no one saw it? Maybe sekki-seki exposure gives you cute horns.
2. Where is the mine?
Certainly, wherever they mine this stuff would have to be an incredibly controlled area, given that in the right hands (the wrong hands?) it would be a potent weapon. Luckily not one either Quincy or Hollows would be able to use easily, but 1) if you don't mind also dying I'm sure it would become very usable, and 2) I'm sure there's other beings out there.
I assume this stuff is also used in the Aizen Prison, and perhaps the Aizen Prison is just part of the mine, which would make it nice and easy, logistically.
3. Is there...radiation protection?
So... the walls... emit reiryoku-dissolving waves... That descend into the ground and dome over the city. Is there a reason the waves don't also just radiate through the middle of the whole city? I assume there's probably some additional spellwork that bounces those waves in some other pattern, or I perhaps some fancy doodad that lives in the middle of the Seireitei and emanates different, cancelling waves that extend exactly to the limits of the walls. But this all seems very tenuous and quite dangerous.
If you live near the places where this wall comes down, is there risk of residual sekki-seki radiation?
Is there an Erin Brockovich of the Seireitei?
How robust are these mirrors or anti-waves or whatever they're using to keep the center sfw? Like we're sure this works, and a natural disaster or a thousand-year blood war or something wouldn't compromise this?
Is the thousand-year blood war actually reiryoku leukemia =_=
Or does sekki-seki have...poles? Does only one side of the rock have wave emitting properties, and you just have to point that side outward? But then the dome thing would be hard, I guess... Actually, I guess if it's a dome over the city, the central point from which these waves are radiating is not the middle of each slab of rock. So the rocks, arranged in a ring around the city, are "speaking" to each other somehow via these waves, and the path of least resistance is in a dome shape over and under the city. I feel like I could buy that; like, cryptogeologically, why not?
Do I trust that enough to want to LIVE there lol, is a different question.
Boy, this just all seems wildly dangerous!!! Surely I can't be alone in this? And it amazes me daily that the Seireitei hasn't wiped itself off the face of the afterlife. But I also feel like this tracks, and is very true to life, and I wonder this about the human species all the time, too.
Last question:
4. How much does it cost to take a tour of the mine

Listen. I am just an endless death note AU generator. Currently I have the following going on:
Coffee shop AU but starting slightly before Light becomes Kira: Light meets this mysterious stranger who was tired/felt like adding weirdness to the world one morning and didn't choose a false name for his coffee orders, and it becomes this sort of running joke/game between them with Light trying to figure out his name or various lore about him and L finding this extremely amusing. But then Light finds the death note. L joins the case. Neither of them know this about each other yet, and as Light and L begin to suspect each other they're still keeping up the charade of casual friendship and a half-joking challenge while it takes on a whole additional dimension and they're catching feelings. Hell on earth for poor Light. They have chess sex at one point.
Death Note Randall and Hopkirk (deceased) AU: my personal favorite but extremely niche. Basically ghost L but. a Specific Flavor. Not only do I steal the rahd lore, but there are some Details (muahaha etc.) You don't need to have seen rahd to enjoy it. Here's a playlist but you could not get me to post the actual fic yet under torture
Modern day AU but the main way that this effects the plot is that Light is majorly into competitive Microsoft Excel and L is secretly the world champion that he's had an intense rivalry with ever since Light started.
Another ghost L thing but in this one L possesses Light's body after his death and now they have to Share
Similar to those time travel AUs where Light and/or L gets sent back and have to decide whether to make different decisions except it's the task force (excluding L and Light) and they have to decide whether to try to prove it and arrest him or try to help him and whether they should let Light know about this or if that would be a death sentence. Lots of problem solving, lots of decision making, Light gets to unmask <3 (This one was inspired by (but different from) a tumblr post I should add a link to if I can find it)
One where I mess with the lore so that Light is transforming into a shinigami due to the number of people he has killed (symbolism etc) but this starts right before his confinement so he has to try to hide it and it generally messes up his plans horribly because. Imagine being under constant observation by the world's greatest detective but you're literally transforming into a death god while trying to hide that anything is unusual about you at all.
"Characters watch the show" but it's characters get transported to this world and exposed to modern fandom. This takes place during the warehouse so Light's alive but Mikami is there. They're just yoinked out of there. There is another version of this that takes place during Yotsuba Arc instead.
Along similar-ish lines, a blatantly comedic fic where L reads explicit rpf about L and Kira in front of Light at one point during Yotsuba Arc and Light gets really mad about it leading to intense debate of what Kira would be like in bed, among other things. Keep in mind Light does not have his memories but he does have strong opinions on the topic, for some mysterious reason that Light tries really hard to justify to himself
And more. I love making things worse for my poor little meow meow specifically because I understand his brand of problem solving on a spiritual level and I like to watch it play out. But also because pushing Light to his extremes and seeing how much it takes for him to snap is like crack to me. Mentally putting this guy in saw traps.

I know you’ve done the outline for how the Homunculus secret is revealed, but what about Makoto being Yuma’s Homunculus, and to an extension, his memory gap?
I can just imagine as they read the notes by the corpses, there would be mention of the UG having acquired the DNA of someone who had a powerful supernatural presence two-three years ago (I don’t know the specific timeline in your AU if it’s the same as in-game or different), and testing on them before acquiring the perfect Homunculus and erasing the original’s memories. The amount of years lining up to Yuma’s missing memory gap. It would not be painting a pretty picture for both Yakou and Yuma.
Also, side note question relating to the topic, even though Yuma has lost his memories, does he still have unconscious triggers from those times? Like when he enters Amaterasu’s Labs, he starts to get antsy even though he doesn’t exactly know why (though he would probably chalk it up to being on high alert in being in the heart of the enemy’s base)? I could be wrong though, sometimes amnesiacs have different reactions or something in various medias and depending on how they lost their memories.
From what Yuma has told Yakou about his strange gap in memory, it doesn't make things any easier to settle in the chief's mind. Fubuki's note details of a successful capture and experimentation on a human with untrained supernatural powers three and a half years ago, who became the exact candidate the UG needed for the homunculus project. After about half a year's worth of testing, the perfect homunculus was created. However, perfection comes with awareness of the self. The UG's victory proved to be short-lived when the immortal monster escaped the laboratory. Using another six months, they kept the original in captivity to be continuously tested on in hopes of recreating what they lost. In the end, they never succeeded, so they tampered with the person's memories and sent them to the WDO, letting them deal with the poor runt.
After Yakou reads the note and Yuma questions what he read, the chief decides to protect Yuma from the horrid realization and lie about the contents. Shinigami scolds him for hiding the truth, but he remains stubborn. He doesn't want to risk Yuma suffering from the revelation when they need to investigate and put a stop to Makoto's schemes. Unfortunately, he wouldn't be able to tell Yuma himself, as Makoto beats him to it in the mystery labyrinth. Yuma's trust falters as he questions why Yakou didn't tell him, but Yakou is too distraught to explain why as he reels over his own awful epiphany of being an immortal, cannibalistic monster. He's scared of hurting Yuma in more ways than one, terrified he'll become the monster he's been told he is. Makoto uses Yakou's stunted emotions to his advantage, cornering Yuma as he taunts his original and readies to eliminate him. With no one else to turn to, harkening back to chapter 0, he calls out to Yakou for assistance to save him. The chief is pulled out of his stupor, determined to keep Yuma safe from the threat much bigger than him in this labyrinth.
As for how Yuma lived with his year-long memory gap, he could hardly tell he missed a whole year of his life. All he remembered was being kidnapped by scouts and then reawakening right outside the WDO's headquarters. The only way he was able to tell a year passed was a quick look at a calendar. It seemed impossible, but he couldn't deny that he missed something important in that year. He just didn't know what. While a memory wipe from Shinigami completely erases any specific recollection without flaw due to magic, the UG could only rewire the brain, so while it was highly effective, some subtilties may slip through the slim cracks. Yuma gets faint sensations of deja vu and uneasy premonitions when entering Amaterasu's secret lab, but he chalked it up to the already intense situation. Turns out that having a bad feeling about this would be proven right as Yomi enters the scene and spreads chaos across the lab.

I should not have watched Bleach and Dead Like Me in the same day one after the other after taking an edible but I had a stroke of genius and had to write it out.
Dead Like Me stars an 18 year old girl named George (short for Georgia) who dies after being crushed by a toilet from a space station that exploded. Her soul is removed before her body got obliterated thanks to a reaper. However, now George has to reap the souls of the recently deceased to allow them to pass on into the afterlife while also meeting various other unique grim reapers in a waffle house to help guide her new undead life.
Bleach is about a boy named Ichigo who has the ability to see ghost until one day he runs into a Shinigami or Soul Reaper by the name of Rukia and thanks to a few series of mishaps he ends up having his soul removed from his body and becomes a soul reaper to fight hollows, the corrupted souls of the deceased who couldn't pass on into the afterlife. As well as meeting a large and unique cast of soul reapers to help him.
Both Bleach and Dead Like Me establishes that there's a whole network of reapers working around the clock reaping souls for the afterlife. Reapers in both shows are invisible but can be visible to certain people but in Dead Like Me they can become visible but will look like a completely different person to people who are alive.
In Dead Like Me there are these mysterious supernatural creatures called Gravelings mischievous ghostly beings who causes the accidents that kills people. Reapers aren't allowed to interfere with the Gravelings actions. We also learn in the first episode that if a reaper doesn't do their job and reap the soul then the soul will decay and rot and it's implied that the souls can turn into graveling. Coincidence, I think not.
According to Bleach's spinoff Burn the Witch there are different division of the Soul Society and each of them treats hollows differently and refers to them with different names. In Japan they're called hollows and Soul Reapers just kills and purifies them. In London they're called Dragons and they're protected and controlled by their reapers who are named witches. So what are they called in America? Here's my answer it's Gravelings.
That's right Dead Like Me is actually about the American Division of the Soul Society. The Reapers of America have learned to pacify and work with the hollows which they refer to as Gravelings however unlike the Japanese and Europe division the reapers of America allows the gravelings to cause harm to humans both to make their jobs easier to reap souls and because of some belief in fate.

Bleach MMORPG Idea
When The War Is Over
Character Customization
The game begins with the player taking the entrance exam to the Shinigami Academy. Here is where you can pick what you look like, and select which district you come from. Which district you pick will have a few different effects on your character's stats - for instance, the lower numbered the district you pick, the lack of training or access to food and knowledge means that your kidou skills are terrible, but surviving on the outskirts gives you a lot of endurance and powerful physical attacks; meanwhile, the closer you are to the Seireitei, the better access to food and teaching means you probably have a good grasp of kidou, but you have been fairly protected, so you aren’t as physically strong. All of these starting stats are not permanent, and can be changed depending on a variety of choices and training options, but they make it easier to tailor your Shinigami to certain roles early on. You can also potentially pick certain buffs for your character depending on where you came from. There would also be two potentially paid options - Noble Soul, and Werewolf. Noble Soul means you were born to a member of the Seireitei Nobility (possibly one of the Five Noble Houses?) and with an upbringing of expectation and access to the best training of all kinds, you get the optimized stats from the beginning of the game. Werewolves is a mostly cosmetic/role-playing choice, as you get different character creation menu, and some NPCs will remark on your status as a Werewolf, but you might get a few permanent buffs. They would probably be attached to some expansion packs, like the Noble Soul Expansion, and the Beast World Expansion, which would include more story and such. Maybe there's a Quincy one where you start as a Quincy now allied with Soul Society to help clean up.
*Perhaps there are options for other kind of animal-based characters? That might be too hard . . .
Prologue/Tutorial: Academy Years
You enter into the bottom rung class at the Academy, and after an entry scene, start taking various classes. This section of the game teaches you the basic mechanics, some lore, does a bit of world-building, and introduces you to other students and teachers. You also get a few glimpses of various members of the Gotei, and teases as to when this takes place within the Bleach Timeline. As you attend classes and study for exams, you are already beginning to tailor your stats, and learning about the various Squads you want to enter after graduation. There is some minor drama, maybe a fight with a Hollow, and setting up a character as a rival.
**Do you get your Zanpakutou at the beginning or the end of your school career? Hmmm.
During the last year of the Academy, the Quincy War erupts in the Soul Society. Your character, and the rest of your classmates, are barricaded inside the Academy, forced to watch from behind a barrier as your teachers (maybe some older students, a few of your friends?) fight off the Quincy forces trying to attack the Academy. While initially the school is well protected, the first barrier is shattered and Quincys flood the school. Helpless behind the second barrier, you watch as those who have taught you and helped you are cut down, injured, and killed. As the massacre happens, you catch a glimpse of someone in the melee, standing apart, smiling. You have no idea who they are, but they are staring straight at you. It's as if they are staring into your Soul . . .
When the battle finally ends, you stand in the middle of a bloodbath, only a few of your teachers have survived and most of your classmates are traumatized. You are shaken, but furious, and vow to discover who led the attack on your school.
Game Start/The Story Begins . . .
We move forward in time. The war is, ostensibly, over, and Soul Society is a total wreck. You and your class at the Academy have been graduated early, as Shinigami Apprentices, to help fill the ranks of the Gotei devastated by the war. Under the leadership of one of the Thirteen Squads, you embark on your journey as a Shinigami, working to help Soul Society heal, and hunting for the person who killed so many of your teachers and schoolmates. Unbeknownst to you, there is more going on under the surface that meets the eye . . .
As a Shinigami Apprentice, you have a great amount of freedom in which Squad you choose to align yourself with. You can change which Squad you align yourself with by simply talking to certain characters, and completing some easy quests. Each Squad has a different buff granted to their members (for instance, Squad 4 gives an increase on healing abilities, and so on). However, apart from the buffs and a few story scenes, as well as a few Squad specific quests, there is otherwise very little difference to what Squad you pick. There are, however, certain Squads that you must meet certain requirements to join. For example, to join Squad 11, your strength stat must be higher than any other stat. Once you've joined this will no longer matter - you can absolutely have a kidou-user in Squad 11 - but to join up you must meet the requirements set by the Captain. Only Squads' 13, 3, 4 and 5 can be joined with no special requirements. If you are a Werewolf, you can also join Squad 7 without meeting the requirements. Squad 1 has the most requirements to join, meaning it’s basically impossible to start in this Squad, unless you purchased the Noble Soul Pack, and gives the best all-around buffs.
***Squad 12 could potentially be crafting "class"?
The main way of getting stronger, besides leveling up, is to "connect" with, or "upgrade" your zanpakutou. Each sword has a "skill tree" on which you spend points, until you reach Shikai, which unlocks a new skill tree, that you spend points on to reach Bankai. When the sword is still an Asauchi, the skills you can pick are basically limitless, but as you pick certain skills/buffs, you might lock out other abilities (for instance, picking mostly fire abilities will probably lock out any water abilities). Once you reach Shikai, that skill tree will be determined by the skills you picked when your sword was an Asauchi, then the same for Bankai. You will also be able to pick from a few different sword forms, and based on several quests and choices you make, will determine your sword spirit name and appearance. You won’t be locked into that sword forever, though. By purchasing or earning certain points, you can use Squad 12's (highly experimental) zanpakutou reforge, to turn your zanpakutou back into an Asauchi and start over with your sword construction. This will mean repeating a few quests to get your Shikai and/or Bankai again. You can also complete special quests to gain a Vizard or Fullbringer form.
Other ideas:
You have quarters you can decorate
You can have neat little pets that follow you around, potentially help you fight
Learn Shunpou and sprint around the map
Visit the Living World, Hueco Mundo, the Beast World, the Quincy Shadow City, Soul King's Palace, Rukon etc.
Get various outfits and accessories
Mini games?
Work with various characters from the TV and Manga
Lots of opportunities for world-building

Stupid exercise in futility but trying to nail down some sense of order within the Gotei 13.
Tumblr media
Squad 1 as best as we ever knew was Yamamoto, Sasakibe, and Okikiba, three old men... Maybe they're all old because they've all just been at it for just as long a time, but I like to think that squad 1 is just the retire to a desk job squad for the gotei, so it's full of retirees.
But then Shunsui and Nanao get thrown in there to resume capt. and lt. duties basically just by way of Shunsui's senority. He definitely steps up to the task given the needs of the plot, but it would have been nice to see more of a total shift in personality once slacking off ceases to be a real option.
So as far as we know this squad is largely administrative and political. Whatever it is that unites the other 12 squads, and gives the Gotei as a whole direction comes from Squad 1. Presumably Squad 1 also directly negotiates relations with the Central 46 and the Royal Families.
We also know Genryusai is the founder of the Shinigami Academy that trains new shinigami, but it's unclear if he still had any direct interaction himself.
Tumblr media
Squad 2 we know was initially just a "militia" which makes sense as a top priority in the Gotei's formation. But Yoruichi's ascent to head of her family, her family's secret police, and 2nd squad captain merged said militia with the Shihouin Family's special forces. The special forces seem to thus recruit from/thru the 2nd Squad now.
They consist of what are basically ninja police, patrolling, surveilling, arresting, and detaining. I kind of hate that they exist the way they do because they seem to just be a giant redundancy within the Gotei; various things the gotei would sensibly have specialized departments for that might be squad specific duties, the onmitsukido seem to have their own subdivisions handling already...
Tumblr media
Squad 3 we have no damn clue about.... They're really never elaborated on in any meaningful way under any particular captain...
Tumblr media
Squad 4 is all medical. Thank god this one's nice cut and dry. We know they have both nurses in dedicated medical facilities within the seireitei as well as field medics in 14 different subdivisions. It is not clear if those subdivisions have any specialized roles. They attend to prisoners as well as active duty shinigami that they follow out into the field. It is questionable if they offer any services to the souls in the rukongai, although Jidanbo's complete neglect would suggest not.
Tumblr media
Squad 5 has no explicit roles or duties shown throughout the series. But there is some suggestion that they could be the gotei's liason with the academy, or otherwise something like HR, dealing with assigning incoming shinigami to squads and filling squad needs for personel.
We know Aizen had a hand in shuffling Renji, Kira, and Momo around in their early days with the Gotei, but it's unclear if those were attributable to his Captain rank in general, or if he did so in his capacity as 5th captain specifically.
Alternatively it could be something that would cover the information and resources that facilitated Aizen's specialized research into hollows, but there's not a lot to go off of there.
Tumblr media
Squad 6 also has no clear roles.
They went to the human world to apprehend Rukia, but that feels more in line with Byakuya's personal responsibilities than his squad's.
The position appears to have been passed down several generations in the Kuchiki family.
We also know they have their own jail cells, and its not made clear if that's something every squad has although it very well might be. But given Byakuya's fixation on law, it's possible the 6th Squad is specialized in some form of law enforcement: tracking down, apprehending, criminal shinigami like Rukia, and detaining insubordinates like Renji.
Tumblr media
Squad 7 is yet another super vague one. All we really know is that Komamura and Tetsuzaemon operate akin to a yakuza boss and underling, and that Komamura values loyalty above all else. Between Tetsuzaemon's name, his predecessor Jinnemon's name(which both refer to "gates" and contribute to the yakuza aesthetic) and Komamura's affinity for heavy armor, it's possible they are a defensive focused group. But what kind of actual responsibility that would entail under normal circumstances is super unclear.
No idea what Love lends to any of this.
Curiously, the Gate Guardians would presumably be part of a squad if they aren't their own independent force, but it's not clear whose squad they'd belong to if they belong to any at all. But Jidanbo's little brother Jirobo was part of 7th Squad. (Although once they brought up the that walls and gates surround the King's Realm normally... which makes very little sense anyway... it would suggest the Gate Guardians hang out up in the Royal Realm under normal circumstances???)
Tumblr media
Squad 8's responsibilities are also just never really addressed.
Whatever it is the squad does, Nanao's the one doing it, so possibly something fitting her bookish demeanor more than Shunsui's?
With Shunsui's slacking there's no reason to suspect that any part of the squad's duties particularly suit him. And whatever Nanao did as his lt. Lisa had done before her, and resumed doing as new captain once Shunsui moved to 1st squad. But then Lisa's demeanor is, superficially at least, identical to Nanao's. So that doesn't really add any clues.
Tumblr media
Squad 9 has some clues, but none that really add up.
We know they run the cultural magazine on the side.
We know Kensei ran them like a biker gang in the past.
We know they were the ones sent to investigate when shinigami disappeared in the rukongai.
So it's possible they could be the vanguard? Either like scouts or as the first line of defense? Feels redundant with Squad 2's spec.ops. patrol squad though, but again most of 2nd squad's existence as a partially independent organization suggests they just internally do all the same things the gotei does more broadly...
The biker gang thing would sort of suggest high mobility as a specialty skill/group tactic?
Tumblr media
Squad 10 unclear.
Hitsugaya's got a whole boy detective thing going on in the SS arc, but that might be circumstantial to the conspiracy plot and not related to his duties as 10th captain. Plus more of a personal character quirk than a job role.
Matsumoto does not appear to be an asset to these duties in any case.
The late addition of Isshin also does not make clear much of anything.
We know they received some kind of casualty reports but it seems like they weren't reports from their own squad. (the reports were filed late due to Isshin and Rangiku's shirking, but if their own squad members had been dead and missing for months surely they'd have noticed.)
We know Hitsugaya was the supervising captain in the Karakura stakeout after the first Arrancar attacks. But it's super unclear what the process there really was; he may have opted into it as a personal matter wanting to deal with Aizen's affairs, and it sounded like the other team members had been selected first and independent of his command. So not clear if any of it really aligns with his squad duties even remotely...
Tumblr media
Squad 11 is nice and simple. The fighters of the Gotei wind up here. But notably not the formal militia that make up squad 2, even before the incorporation of the shihouin spec.ops.
Given the general thuggishness and wild demeanor of the most of the squad it's possibly these are categorized by kill count or otherwise fight record and not by qualifications of formalized training. That or their overall tone is a result of Zaraki specifically being their captain and previous iterations didn't necessarily have the same delinquent vibes.
Tumblr media
Squad 12 is Research & Development. Nice and simple.
Given Hikifune's role as creator of the Soul Candies prior to Urahara's remodeling of the squad, and her subsequent focus on food as part of the Royal Guard, it sounds like they were always a group outfitted for mass production of synthetic goods, Urahara just happened to modernize their process from what was likely a more traditional arts kind of focus into something more industrial.
Given the importance of food and hunger as correlated to the emergence of spirit powers in Soul Society that kind of role within the gotei is actually a lot more important than it sounds. I again turn to my tangential speculation and head canon that specialized food in soul society relates to size relates to spirit power, as exhibited in Hacchi's inhuman size(over 8 feet tall) and themes of food in parts of his name and powers, which in turn points back to the gargantuan gate guardians.
Tumblr media
Despite being one of the squads with the most intimate focus, Squad 13 is yet another super unclear one.
We know they deployed Rukia, afro guy, and Ryuunosuke & Shino to Karakura.
We know Ukitake gave Ichigo the substitutes badge, and that Ginjo seemed to know Ukitake personally, likely thru the substitute shinigami position as well.
Together those facts might suggest they're specifically the ones in charge of human world activities; whether that's something that would be focused on slaying hollows, rescuing humans and ghosts, or delivering ghosts to Soul Society first with the others as incidental responsibilities is unclear.
Tumblr media
Also the Royal Guard were presumably all previous captains of Yamamoto's earliest iteration of the Gotei 13, which suggests that whatever role they filled then were the basis of the squads going forward.
So is there a squad that specializes in clothes that Shutara had founded? (i want to say 8th personally)
One in charge of distributing the asauchi to new shinigami that had been Ohetsu's old squad?
Kirinji seems to have implicitly been the original 4th captain while Unohana had been 11th.
And what about Ichibee's prolific set of skills? His knowledge of true names, theme of rakugo wordplay, theme of calligraphy, and joining theme of artisan monks all seem to suggest he was the original Kido specialist, turning truth into words into poems/chants into magic. But his name also means "military commander" which could suggest he ran the standard militia at the time before they were merged with Shihouin special ops.
edit: right i guess this whole bit has been debunked since the random release of the original gotei roster
Tumblr media
And on the subject of the Royal Guard, what is up with their random subordinates, whom I assume live with them on the big city plates in the Royal Realm? Are they shinigami? Are they considered part of the Royal Guard? And is the Royal Guard still part of the Gotei? The Captains are clearly of a higher authority, as is the group itself, but the captains were "promoted" from within the gotei, and share the captain coats, as well as the Gotei diamond insignia. Which begs the question, are the inhabitants of the Royal Realm thus also elevated Gotei members? Or is it an entire literally stratified upper class, (somehow even above the royals and lesser nobility that inhabit the seireitei) who have families and children and communities within the Royal Realm without ever having the go through the academy or gotei service?
(I think the obvious answer is that Kubo did not think it through and that the contradictions just need to be ignored)
Tumblr media
Also the Kidou Corps is in there some place outside of the gotei proper yet apparently still abiding a capt.+lt. system of command...(although that feels like a half assed addition of the TBtP more than anything sensible) They have their own jailers that handled Rukia and Aizen, and a separate type of uniformed member that handled the execution ceremony after Rukia was delivered from her cell.
Their uniforms are different from standard shinigami and distinctly monk and even nun like which would have suggested they functioned not dissimilarly to the warrior monk and general buddhist temple during warring states era, where they were considered autonomous from the military caste structure of the samurai and imperial court.
They also supposedly operate the gates to the human world.
And then the late addition of Tessai and Hacchi in formal captain & lt. roles introduced a set of totally different uniforms that are just a coat and mantle over basic shihakusho. Again this feels like a crappy halfbaked idea rather than something that adheres to the established aesthetic of the kidou corps at all.

And the Central 46 all wear shihakusho, despite their apparent nonmilitary role in Soul Society, and autonomous structure outside the Gotei.
Aizen also seemed to suggest that it's possible for Gotei captains to be promoted to the Central 46, and we've seen several of them are elderly, so it's possible the previous captains from Yamamoto's generation are/were among them. Curiously, the Central 46 aren't specifically all elderly when we see the aftermath of Aizen's slaughter, but in the TBtP sidestory the few we see the faces of are specifically much older than basically any other shinigami we see outside of Yamamoto and squad 1.
Yhwach also distinctly calls out the Gotei as having grown weak in peace time since his original invasion 1000 years prior, which suggests that there wouldn't be much cause for casualties among the captains in that time, save the Kenpachi in squad 11 killing eachother in succession. So, the turn over of captains might be accounted for by Central 46 promotions.

Writing/Art Update 2.27.2024
I met all three of my goals for last week, which is good, I guess. Number one was to stop being manic about my stupid fanfic, which I did, but I half-regret, because maybe I would be done by now, if I had just shot the anxiety curl, but that's neither here nor there, I suppose. I did finish Chapter 9a, and sent Chapters 7 and 8 to the beta, which were the other things I said I wanted to do. I, in fact, managed to make a dent in Chapter 9c, as well (Chapter 9b is like a little interlude thing, which may or may not get subsumed into Chapter 9c, depending on how long it comes out)
I am so close to being done, and I feel like it ought to be easy to push it over the finish line, but it hasn't. I've been feeling pretty down on it for the last few days. I'm not super-happy with the way the last few chapters have been turning out, but on the other hand, I'm not sure I have any way to make them better. I think a lot of it may just be that I have been working on this fanfic for so long that I'm kinda sick of it. :\
I took a little bit of a break today--I finished a book I was reading, and I made sort of a rough draft version of a banner, mostly because I'm still trying to nail down the title from a couple of different variations, and I was hoping that seeing it visually would be helpful. Based on that, the current frontrunner is Damage History (the other two options are Past Damage and Prior Damage, please feel free to tell me if you have any opinions).
I just did the math and apparently I crossed the six figure mark this week: the thing currently stands at 100,731 words (+7,004 for last week...really? How did I manage that???) I have two and a half scenes left to go, one of which is supposed to be short and one of which is the epilogue. There's also at least one scene that I'll probably try to rewrite a bit, I dunno. I guess the goal for next week is to finish the thing??? All of this feels extremely unreal.
Anyway, you've all been incredibly patient with me, so here's another preview. This is from one of the flashbacks in Chapter 2, and if it seems vaguely familiar, it's because it's one of the parts that got spun out of the old Renji-breaks-an-arm story.
---
Much like Kitajima himself, the shop had looked a lot better the last time Renji had seen it. There was dust and cobwebs everywhere. Most of the shelves were half-empty.
"Take off your shirt," Kitajima instructed, dragging out a stool for Renji to sit on.
"All the damage is below the elbow," Renji said quietly.
"Oh, look who's a medic now," the old man burbled.
Renji took off his shirt.
Kitajima pressed one of his clammy hands in the space between Renji's shoulder blades. A cold, nasty feeling bled down Renji's arm. He wanted to vomit. After a few moments, Kitajima felt his way down Renji's arm, squeezing at his flesh and shooting painful little sparks into his nerves. When the old rat snake got past the elbow, his fingers pressed against the end of the broken bone and Renji nearly passed out.
"Hey! You're hurting him!" Rukia barked, bracing her entire weight against Renji's shoulder in an attempt to keep him upright.
Kitajima ignored her.
It wasn't pain, not exactly. Well. It was painful, but it was more like Renji's body was burning through all of his energy as quickly as possible. It felt like dying.
Kitajima finished his palpitations, then fetched something from one of his dusty jars. "Eat this," he said, pressing it into Renji's hand.
Renji remembered these things all too well. He'd eaten a lot of them during the period when he was working for Kitajima. It was a pill made up of mashed rice and various dried roots and seeds. They weren't the tastiest thing in the world, but they packed a lot of energy and they lasted forever. He bit into it gingerly.
“As I told you the last time you were here,” the old man growled, “you have the demon magic in you. The shinigami use it to cast spells, but also to push their bodies past what is normally possible. Like a fool, you have done this without proper training. You have broken and healed yourself simultaneously, but with no skill, and you have made a hash of it.”
“I wasn’t trying,” Renji excused.
“Can you repair it?” Rukia pressed.
“I can rebreak it,” Kitajima replied.

How Byakuya met Hisana (some possibilities/AU maybe?)
As previously mentioned on this post, I've been thinking about Hisana a lot lately and that obviously includes how she and Byakuya met. Truth is, there are many possibilities and you will probably find all of them in some fanfic (I am currently working on a rec list of ByaHisa/ByaSana fanfics which explore various different scenarios of how these two met, so if you're interested keep an eye out on the tags).
I have different scenarios in my head and some of them might be slightly AU depending of your own headcanons and interpretation of the source material (which was not much tbh). We were given so little information about Hisana that she just became this character I can basically assume anything and everything about.
First scenario: Hisana as a shinigami
This is one of the easiest ways to explain how those two met. Maybe she was a seated or unseated officer at the 6th or 13th. Better yet, can you imagine Hisana at the 11th? What a plot twist that would be.
He falls in love, goes against his family and marries her. But how did she get sick though? Maybe from some mission gone wrong or some successful mission in which there was a high price to pay?
Second scenario: Hisana as a maid
Another scenario that could explain how they met, but also calls into question how are the staff of the Kuchiki family hired? They must probably come from Rukongai, right?
Third scenario: Hisana as a courtesan
I've read many fanfics in which Hisana worked as a courtesan and they could perfectly fit in the story. Byakuya could have been her client and they both ended up falling in love, he had enough money and status to get her out of that life and bring her to Seireitei.
Fourth scenario: Byakuya on a mission
Another common scenario I've encountered in the fics of this pair is Byakuya going on a mission and for whatever reason it is at the 78th district. He either ends up getting hurt or helping Hisana in a way. I don't know why but I believe if Kubo ever writes anything about how these two met (he will never do it), I see him using this scenario. Don't ask me why, it's just a feeling I have.
Yadda, yadda, yadda, he takes her from her little hut in the woods to his manor in Seireitei and marries her.
I've also read some theories around the internet that both Hisana and Rukia were never actually alive which could have explained them ending up together in Inuzuri. Hisana is a very mysterious character for me and either she or Byakuya are unreliable narrators for me sometimes when I'm rereading the revelation scene. But I think that if Byakuya knew of anything else he would have probably told Rukia by now, but who knows for sure? I think not even Kubo knows lol
Anyways, does anyone have any other theory or scenario they would like to share?
