Top-Secret Folders: The Repressed Divity
Faustina Tepes:
•She is given the name of "Faustina" by her sire, Sika Madu. However, her true name had always been Krul Tepes. In addition, she was given the nickname "Lilium" by her older brother, Azrael, as well as "Trinity" by the nuns. She is 4'7 was 14 years old when experimented on.
•She is not a vampire, none of them were. They were all angel experiments of some sorts. Her hair was tied with white lilies in beautiful round loops. She kept her blue eyes. Her wings are white, although it can be mistaken for light pink sometimes.
•Among the other children, she was the least keen on the idea of following God(she's an atheist being forced to become religious.) Sika Madu picked up on that very early, as she made her dislike for religious belief very obvious, therefore she has a different task than the other children on Sundays, which was going to catechism. (Faustina underwent religious trauma, because not only did she disobey to follow God, but was also a closeted bisexual. "It's considered a sin.")
*When Sika Madu leaves with her brother, she vows never to forgive him. But her way of showing her anger was very....controversial. She becomes a nun(under false belief to God) for 20 years, hoping that her "faith" is strong enough to reach her brother and bring him back.
•She was a very frail and vulnerable child, but cheerful and friendly nonetheless. It is unknown when it occurred exactly, but Faustina developed an eating disorder. She'd never be in the mood to eat even when she needed to. She'd have panic attacks on the dinner table and burst into tears when she couldn't finish her food like the others(it makes her feel horrible that she's wasting food). She'd always feel bad giving Azrael her leftovers.
•She was brought to Sika Madu by Zephon(real name Urd) Geales. Her and Faustina were running away from angry villagers, after having just witnessed their mother being murdered. He appeared to them hooded and on a horse, coming to save them from the burning village. Faustina will never forget that Zephon saved her and her brother, and holds the utmost respect for him, even if they dont talk often.
•Her first friend was Nautilus(nicknamed Noya), he matched her energy exactly so it was easy to get along with him. She noticed throughout the years that the boy is deeply interested in her brother. He'd always blush when being complimented by him, and would always go with him when Sika Madu asked for volunteers to go to the marketplace.
•Lazarus(nicknamed Lest) was like a younger brother to her. She felt bad that he couldn't really do many chores around the house because of his illness. There was no known cure for the disease but a doctor from the village would frequently visit the household to give him medicine. When she first met him, he didn't know how to read, that's until Zephon offered to read him books from the library every night. (That's what started Lest's crush on the other, not knowing that Remiel was also interested in Zephon.)
*After Sika Madu abandoned them and took Nautilus and Azrael with him, Lest and Krul's friendship became complicated. They were assigned different parts of the world to rule over thus they'd not see each other as much as they used to. Whenever they would, they'd be arguing during the progenitor councils. They'd seldom write each other letters. Lest gradually gets better from his illness after he becomes King of Germany. The boy seems to ignore to acknowledge everything Faustina and her brother have done for him while he was still ill.
•She was quite surprised to discover that Remiel had disappeared to her own country. She discovers that he created something called "The Hyakuya Sect". But because they are old acquaintances, he promises that his organization will not harm her. He is the creator of the First Vampire, upon an accidental experimentation of his.
•Faustina's opinions on the Seventh progenitor are very mixed. She knows for sure that she can't trust him and continues not to do so. When speaking with Rigr, she learns that the man is trans-male. He was born as the Bathory's princess(no one knows what his deadname was -- and its rude to ask, really.) before being found by Rigr and being made to participate in his experiments(The Michaela experiment). But because he was the wrong gender, Ferid underwent surgery to be changed{he was thankful for the surgery because now he feels less dysphoric but it was still painful as hell.) Afterwards, Rigr gave him a new name: "Michaela". When Ferid turned out to be a failure, he ditched Rigr and changed names again, this time going as Ferid Bathory.

I really really REALLY need to see more people makimg the connection between trump and his russian handlers tbh.......like i know we've somehow gone through the looking glass of putin apologia but that piece abt the NYT you just posted, the bots, the interference: in the bag for trump? Yes. But i dont believe its due to his or even republican power or popularity or forcefulness.......this is a man with so much debt and kompromat thats only getting worse!! Not to sound kwazy BUT WE ARE BEING FULLY INFLITRATED and at the risk of conspiracizing i think the russians are ALSO behind the Times's demise along with so many other information centers etc. Like i KNOW these leftists love him but like. Wouldnt they care a LITTLE abt being manipulated like this???
Trump is 100% an active, willing, and eager Russian agent. That's not even paranoid conspiracy theory, that's just the only reasonable interpretation of the facts:
NOT TO MENTION that in the next two years after the Helsinki conference where Trump kowtowed to Putin in every way, the CIA admitted to losing huge and unusually high numbers of classified informants around the world (not CIA agents, but people secretly working for the American government in often-hostile countries):
Once again, this all happened when Trump was in office, when he was actively handing over CIA intel to the Kremlin against the wishes of the entire national security establishment, and which other experts have suggested was directly as a result of Trump handing over the identities of American informants to Russia, including those stationed in Russia itself:
Now, I could go on, but you get the point. Not to mention that Trump just lost a major UK-based lawsuit against Christopher Steele, the former MI6 agent who was the first to provide documents linking Trump to Russia in the controversial "Steele dossier":
And now: Trump is deeply in hock for hundreds of millions in legal fees and punitive judgments that are only increasing by the day, he somehow just came up with $90 million to appeal the judgment against E. Jean Carroll (nobody knows where he got this money either), and Russian state TV spends all their time openly salivating for Trump's return to the presidency (so he can hand over Ukraine and the rest of NATO and, as he literally said, "let Russia do whatever the hell they want.") I know we're largely numb to all the awful treasonous shit that Trump does, but like. This isn't a conspiracy theory, this is just what's going on in plain sight, and while the Online Leftists have recently become so stupid that I honestly can't tell if it's just terminal brainworms or active Russian psyops, it's strongly indicated that it is in fact a mix of both:
So, like. Just some food for thought.

OMG, poor Anon 🤦🏻‍♀️ Is on your side a simple file in PDF a proof of everlasting, eternal love?
Or you’re coming just for some legal advice?
All right then. I'm ready to provide you with a professional legal advice, even though my Co-Believer @marciabalfe has already explained the complexity of this case.
👩🏻‍⚖️
First of all, if you want to find out who owns land or property in Scotland, you can access Registers of Scotland's registers.
Tumblr media
❗️
So, your great .pdf file (by the way, I sincerely appreciate the time you spent sending me that information!) is not the official registration certificate.
Now, what information is given in your dossier?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All right. Let's run it again.
This report has been prepared for the purposes and use of the person named on the report.
Is your name Tony, Anon? Aka 🧛🏻‍♂️?
Because I don’t think that your name is Caitríona, Caitríona Balfe? But maybe I'm wrong. Please, correct me if I'm wrong. I will be obliged.
So where did you get this .pdf file? What I mean is, who gave it to you? Which PR department? Or is it top secret information? Why the information leaked out now?  And what is the point of that? I mean what's the goal? And finally, who would benefit from this? ❓
Listen, if you think  I seem a lot more interested in asking questions than answering them, I would like to quote a classical Roman legal saying, phrase found in Seneca's Medea : is fecit, cui prodest.
Done by the one who profits from it. Does that passage make you think of anything? 💁🏻‍♀️
But why don't we get back to your proof of everlasting, eternal love. So who owns the property according to the contentof your .pdf file?
Tumblr media
✍🏻
Can you tell who signed the report?
Tumblr media
❓ So what were you trying to prove by sending me this file?
What happens when we raid  the records of Scotland's Land Information Service?
Tumblr media
Surprisingly your provocation had failed.
But I am greeting you sincerely, Dear Anon. Kisses and hugs.

🛸 ROUND 3. STRANGERVILLE. SPRING. 🛸
Main Aspiration: StrangerVille Mystery
Myrtle had successfully gathered enough evidence to understand what took place at the lab: something went very wrong, some kind of explosion after a bunch of top-secret experiments. And now, a lot of people in high places were trying very hard to cover it up. She knew that Maggie at the Curio Shop would be interested in the dossier she managed to compile, and that she may be able to give her access to the lab if she insisted (that, and a bribe). See, Maggie was sweet, yes, but she was also determined to discover what happened to her cat, Mr. PeePaw, who since going near the crater had never been the same.
✅ Gather 15 Pieces of Evidence ✅ Compile a Strangerville Secret Dossier ⭕ Open the Sealed Door at the Secret Lab

what troubles me most... (to my leftist friends and family)
How can seemingly intelligent people see everything going on all around the nation and the world, and not see anything wrong happening? Before Trump got in the picture, we all saw things happening, but we were never allowed to question it and the politicians just did what they wanted to do. Some of us got mad, but we dealt with it. And we all got along with each other for the most part. There was some hate, but not much.
How can you not see that all media outlets praise one political party and condemn the other? The media is so biased you would have to be a doorknob not to see it. And the division is so fierce that normally intelligent people fight to the death almost to defend their party of their choice. Horrible, violent, nasty things being said and done, but it's allowed by only one side and not the other, and nobody sees this going on?
Then Trump entered the picture. He took down all his opponents by exposing their crimes and inadequacies, in his way unfortunately, and took the nomination by storm. Hillary was so sure she was gonna be president that the DNC put up the congratulations banners months before the democrats even voted. Bernie Sanders said so, and they all denied it. Then once Hillary won the nomination, she admitted it and fired the head of the DNC. Then a minute later hired the same woman for a position on her presidential cabinet for 10 times the salary.
Then, seeing a surprising loss to Trump, Clinton got a dossier from a foreign spy that claimed that Trump colluded with a foreign nation to steal the election. But even if it was true, wasn't she doing the same exact thing? And nobody caught that? And now, after all these years and all the wasted time and money, the accusation against Trump is proven false, and was instigated by Clinton with Obama and Biden in full knowledge of it, and the nation looks like total fools by it.
And EVERYBODY attacked. They were fierce too, and from both sides. Who could Trump trust? Roger Stone was so dangerous to this nation that the FBI SWAT team were organized to arrest him at 4:00 AM while he slept peacefully next to his wife, with his children sleeping peacefully in other rooms. And this much necessary organized attack was so important and top secret that nobody else knew it was going to happen. Except CNN who filmed it live as it happened. And still so many people do not see this?
And they attacked Trump with everything they had, on both sides. And never in the entire time since he became president has anything positive ever been reported on any main stream media outlet. Even FOX denies the positive things they said now.
Only one man is bad. Can't you see this?
Only one political party is bad. Can't you see this?
Think about how Hitler may have taken over Germany and the others. Do you see a connection without mentioning that one man?
This is the second time ever recorded in the world's history that this has ever happened. Jesus was the first. Can't you see this?

Top-Secret folders: the bat sovereign:
Krul Tepes
•4’9
•Secretly enjoys Halloween, but stays quiet about it because she hates giving Ferid the satisfaction that she likes the holiday celebrated on his birthday.
•Shares a bedroom with Harumi(to emphasize that they’re both respectively a DA and a questioning DA.)
•Aside from her main dress, Krul greatly enjoys gothic dresses but on very rare occasions, would wear angelcore-styled dresses. (Side fact: She despises jeans. Especially the tight ones. //I do as well IRL.)
•The one responsible for everyone inside of the Moonlit household, the tribes of kinsiders and Kinfirmclan. (And Synpath zone too). She knows who everyone is and what source they're from, but not how they act/their backstories.
•Due to being the Queen of Vampires, Krul tends to be more than a little arrogant, which makes her sometimes unpleasant to be around with. She acts apathetic to other people's feelings without truly meaning it, and that's what causes her controversies half of the time.
•Arukanu is a familiar sent by the First Progenitor as surveillance over Krul’s actions.(fact from the actual fan book.) However, she has grown to love the bat and care for it like a pet of hers.
•Her forms of speech and writing are typically very formal. Although, whenever she is upset/excited about something, she will shout or type in caps locks, as well as use abbreviations for a more comedic effect.
•She knows how to play the harp and the flute. It was a skill that she learned when she was still a human child.
•For people’s birthdays, it is tradition for Krul to make them flower-crowns. However, it is placed in the most sophisticated birthday box(with ribbon) so that the celebrant doesn’t initially suspect that it’s a flower crown in the first place.
•She doesn’t admit it out loud but she loves flowers, she’s an enthusiast for them and would love to learn anything new about them. She has an underground garden in Sanguinem and secretly visits human Botanic gardens on the surface.
•She has sensitive vampire ears, whether it’s to loud noise or to the cold. (//I'm projecting at this point.)
•She loves oversized/baggy sweaters. During the winter, whenever she was alone. (Side fact: She finds the “Ugly sweater” Christmas tradition hilarious and forces her guards to participate in it.)
•Her favourite season is Spring, because that's when nature typically starts growing back after a cold winter. Bonus, there's so many flowers and it makes Krul ecstatic to see them again.
•When meeting Krul or walking past her, people have said that she smelled of chocolate-covered strawberries.
•She learnt to style hair from practicing on her older brother Ashera.
•Her friend group around the household are: Riliane, Harumi, Marisa and Dream. (She occasionally speaks with Missi, though.)
•She doesn't get along very well with Shinoa Hiiragi because of two reasons. The first being that she's kin with Mahiru Hiiragi, the person she formally made a bargain with. Second, because her and Mitsuba ruined her dress when they all stayed at the apartment.

A little note
Unless your muse is Sabo, if your muse tries to dominate Koala in the bedroom, she will put them in the ground.
She's not putting up with that shit.
Even Sabo, if he catches her on a bad day, may instinctively get an elbow to the gut...
She's not being mean, she's just taking care of herself.
I think you understand...

Dev x Reader
Summary- Yet another mission beckons Dev away from home... This is the night before he has to leave. How will she manage without him? And how long will he manage to keep his job a secret?

The evening sun cast a warm glow across the room as Dev Jammwal sat on the edge of the bed, meticulously reviewing the contents of his mission dossier (disguised as a normal government file of course). His wife entered the room with a happy expression, holding a tiffin containing the laddoos she had made for him. To an outsider, her expressions may have seemed cheerful but only he could tell that she was trying to put a brave face in front of him.
"Yehlo ji, I made them last night. Put it in your bag now, or you might forget it in a rush," she said, a small smile on her face but avoiding his eyes. If she did, she knew she wouldn’t be able to hold back her tears.
Dev looked up, his eyes meeting hers, and he couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt. Her innocence and genuine concern for his well-being made the weight of his double life even more burdensome. “Yes, love," he replied, attempting to hide the conflict with a smile.
Dev took the tiffin from her hands, the aroma of the laddoos triggering memories of countless moments spent together. She sat beside him, her eyes focused on the floor as if the patterns on the carpet held the answers to questions she dared not ask.
As they continued packing, Meera's hands moved with deliberate grace, folding clothes and placing them neatly into the suitcase. Dev watched her, grateful for the love she poured into every action. The unspoken truth hung in the air, a heavy cloud that neither of them dared to acknowledge.
"Make sure you eat properly, okay? And don't forget to take plenty of rest and-" her voice quivered, a subtle tremor betraying the strength she was trying to muster.
"I promise I'll take care of myself," He reassured her, his voice tinged with sadness. The weight of the impending separation bore down on both of them, a silent understanding that lingered in the room.
In an attempt to distract herself, she reached into a drawer and pulled out a soft, well-worn sweater, the familiar scent of Dev's cologne lingering on the fabric. Her hands trembled slightly as she clutched the garment, a cherished item that held the essence of his presence.
"I thought you might need this," she whispered, her voice breaking as she tried to put on a brave front. Her attempt at a smile faltered, and tears welled up in her eyes as she handed him the sweater.
Dev took it, his heart heavy with the weight of her emotions. He recognized the depth of her sacrifice, the silent moments she would spend missing him. He wished he could tell her the truth, unveil the secrets that cast shadows on their shared life, but the oath of secrecy bound him.
As her tears fell, Dev sighed, grappling with the internal conflict. The desire to comfort her warred with the duty to maintain the facade. He set aside the suitcase and enveloped her in a tight embrace, his heart aching at the realization of the impending separation.
"I'm going to miss you so much," she murmured, her voice muffled against his chest.
Dev held her closer, the unspoken words hanging in the air between them. He fought the urge to reveal the truth, the words caught in his throat. Instead, he pressed a gentle kiss on the top of her head, his silence a testament to the sacrifices they both had to endure.
They stood in the quiet room, entwined in an embrace that spoke volumes. Dev, torn between love and duty, held Meera as if trying to imprint the memory of her warmth in his mind. The sweater, a tangible reminder of their shared moments, now symbolized the distance that fate demanded.
As he finally pulled away, Dev locked eyes with Meera, his gaze filled with a profound sadness. He wanted to say so much, to bridge the gap between the truth and the illusion, but the weight of his obligations held him captive. With a heavy sigh, he picked up the suitcase, leaving behind a room laden with unspoken sentiments.
Dev walked through the quiet hallway, his mind consumed by the dichotomy of his life. The weight of the mission dossier in his hand seemed to symbolize the burden he carried, not just for the mission at hand but for the secrecy that enveloped his every move.
As he stepped outside into the fading sunlight, Dev couldn't shake the image of his wife’s innocent smile and her heartfelt gestures. The love she showered on him, so pure and genuine, clashed with the shadows of espionage he navigated. The dilemma within him intensified, torn between the duty to protect his nation and the desire to share his truth with the woman he held dearest.
The drive to the airport was quiet, the car enveloped in a contemplative silence. Dev stole glances at his wife, her eyes fixated on the passing scenery. He wanted to tell her, to unburden his soul, but the oath of secrecy held him captive.
At the airport, they shared a lingering embrace, with her holding on as if she could somehow make him stay back. Her whispered words, "Khayal rakhiyega apna. Aur jaldi lotiyega, intezaar rahega aap ka” echoed in his ears, adding to the weight on his shoulders.
As he boarded the plane, he glanced back at the terminal, where she stood with a hopeful yet sad expression. The conflict within him raged like a storm, but in that moment, he found a glimmer of resolve. The love he shared with her, untainted by the shadows of his work, was his anchor.
The mission would be arduous, the dangers real, but the thought of coming back to Meera, to their shared life, became his driving force. The secrecy was a heavy price, but the love they shared was a beacon that illuminated the darkness.

hai moss im curious. what are your favorite scps. :3
mine are pretty basic (049, 999, etc) but I also like 6448 (the not deer) & 783 (the crooked man)!! i haven't been able to check out the less well known scps but i will someday
YES!! i have a lot to say about this wait let me pull something up i made a list
SCP-7000 “The Loser” (https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-7000) and anything and everything related to william wallace wettle — horrible pathetic wet cat of a man. the world hates him personally and the feeling is mutual. cannot have ONE nice day without something going wrong. by god he deserves a break and he won’t get one. canonically divorced (to the extent that canon is a Thing). there are other articles with him but 7000 is the perfect showcase of the bullshit surrounding this man
SCP-6326 “The Manbear” (https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-6326) — absolutely fucking hilarious. looks like a generic spooky scp article at first but just scroll down to the first picture and you’ll see what i mean. it’s just punch after punch and it left me IN TEARS laughing. someone calls the manbear hung at some point.
SCP-7243 “Existential Abatement” (https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-7243) — insanely good but probably relies quite a bit on you already being familiar with the characters present; you can read about them at https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/on-guard-43-hub (particularly SCP-5056, SCP-5243, and The Significant Others A & B) if you want but be warned there’s A LOT there. also has a lot of what i can only call bullshit sci-fi jargon (affectionate) and it’s great but i uh see why it might be off-putting if you’re not used to it
SCP-INTEGER (https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-5242) — there’s a guy named Dr. Placeholder McDoctrate in there. do i need to say more.
ANYTHING Undervegas (https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/undervegas-hub) — agent calendar my beloved. site-666 my beloved. it’s all great. based on the idea of vegas falling into literal actual hell. the director of the site keeps using everyone’s souls as collateral on bets with demons. if you need a starting point i recommend SCP-4661 but any article works
honestly literally anything with the O5 Council, doesn’t even have to be a specific version of them. see https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/o5-command-dossier for more info. off the top of my head one i really liked is captain kirby’s 001 proposal “O5-13” (https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/captain-kirby-s-proposal) but i am INSANE about all of them. i have my own personal OC interpretations of the council and i have been rotating them in my mind for six months straight. they started as a silly thought experiment but have turned into actual fully-fledged Characters and i am sad that they only exist in my brain :(
SCP-7600 “Six Feet Under” (https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-7600) — it’s been a while since i read this one so i don’t remember ALL the details but it’s about two O5s (4 & 8) and a magic realm. made me Feel Things
OKAY THATS ALL i could dig up more but i’m sleepy and i think this is a pretty good overview. ty for asking!!! :D

______________________________________________________________ There are a few bits marked out with […] where I could not make out what is written on the report, but I’ve used what Pangzi was saying in this scene to fill out the blanks. Below is the transcript and my translation of Pangzi’s chatter to Wu Xie during Liu Sang’s introduction scene.
(0:35:57) 胖子: 这孙子呀 Pangzi: This fucker huh?
吴邪:怎么?你认识这高手? Wu Xie: Why? You know this expert?
胖子:什么高手啊? 我在潘家园打牌的时候,这孙子找过我茬。就这鬼脸化成灰我也认识他。 Pangzi: What expert? This fucker had messed with me when I was playing cards at Panjiayuan. I could recognise his stupid face even if he’s been cremated.
刘丧,九零后,半路开始玩古董。据说是探墓特别准。他用的什么方法呢?就是听雷探墓。 Liu Sang, born in the 90’s, amateur antiques collector. Allegedly, he’s very accurate at finding tombs. And how does he do this? By listening to the thunder.
这是一个古法。听说在这个关中地区早已失传。就是天上一打雷—咔嚓—他一听就能找到这墓。 This is an ancient method. Word is, this is a lost art in the Guanzhong region. It’s like, when it thunders—kacha—and he’ll listen to it and be able to find the tomb.
这不是靠天吃饭吗?他不完全靠本事啊。多多少少得靠点运气吧,对不对? Isn’t that just living at the mercy of the elements? He’s not really using his own abilities. That gotta depend on his luck, more or less, am I right?
这货他不是说听力好,他是这个听觉的分辨力特别好,就能从各种声音里边听出信息来。吹牛地说就是一移动的声呐。 It’s not that this fucker has an exceptional hearing. He’s just good at identifying what he hears, so he could identify information from a myriad of noises. It’s just a boastful way of saying that he’s a portable sonar.
吴邪:那照你这么说的话确实是挺厉害的呀。像个蝙蝠一样。 Wu Xie: From what I heard from you, he’s actually quite amazing. Like a bat.
胖子:哪有蝙蝠厉害啊 给他张脸呢还 Pangzi: How can he compare to a bat? You think too highly of him.
(0:37:01-0:39:46 Liu Sang centric scene, omitted because it’s not relevant here.)
(0:39:47) 胖子:我跟你说 这货不是靠听力出的名。是这人就邪行。 Pangzi: I’m telling you, this fucker’s fame didn’t come from his hearing abilities. It came from how cursed he is.
这刘丧他妈生他时候难产死了,你说丧不丧?他爸带他回老家,半道这刘丧就让人给拐跑了。 This Liu Sang’s mother died due to childbirth complications while having him. Very inauspicious, don’t you think? His father brought him back to their hometown, but halfway there, Liu Sang was kidnapped.
卖给了一个瞎眼老姑子。这瞎眼老姑子吧,不是一般人。听力异于常人。 He was sold to a blind old woman. Well, this blind old woman isn’t an ordinary person. She had extraordinary hearing.
是这个西北远近闻名的顺风耳。 She is a known clairaudience in the northwestern region.
这刘丧跟这瞎眼老姑子日久天长就硬生生地就学会了这一身的这个异于常人的听力。 This Liu Sang honed his hearing abilities to an exceptional range with much hardship while living with this blind old woman.
后来这个丧背儿长大了,我要我要找我爸爸,走到哪里都要找我爸爸。还真找着他这爸爸了。 After this unlucky fellow grew up, “I want to find my dad”, everywhere he goes, “I want to find my dad”. Surprisingly, he really found his dad.
爸爸不认他,你猜怎么着?这丧背儿居然想放火烧死他爸爸,这亲爹啊,他全家。 His dad won’t acknowledge him. Guess what happened next? This unlucky fellow actually thought to set fire and burnt his dad—this is his birth father we’re talking about—and his dad’s family to death.
你说他邪不邪。这是好东西吗这个?怎么,你还不信哪?我跟你说,我说得千真万确,我跟你说 Now isn’t that just cursed? Can someone like that be anything good? What? You don’t believe me? I’m telling you, everything I say is absolutely true, I’m telling you.

Best crime and thrillers of 2023
Given this year’s headlines, it’s unsurprising that our appetite for cosy crime continues unabated, with the latest title in Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series, The Last Devil to Die (Viking), topping the bestseller lists. Janice Hallett’s novels The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels, which also features a group of amateur crime-solvers, and The Christmas Appeal (both Viper) have proved phenomenally popular, too.
Hallett’s books, which are constructed as dossiers – transcripts, emails, WhatsApp messages and the like – are part of a growing trend of experimentation with form, ranging from Cara Hunter’s intricate Murder in the Family (HarperCollins), which is structured around the making of a cold case documentary, to Gareth Rubin’s tête-bêche The Turnglass (Simon & Schuster). Books that hark back to the golden age of crime, such as Tom Mead’s splendidly tricksy locked-room mystery Death and the Conjuror (Head of Zeus), are also on the rise. The late Christopher Fowler, author of the wonderful Bryant & May detective series, who often lamented the sacrifice of inventiveness and fun on the altar of realism, would surely have approved. Word Monkey (Doubleday), published posthumously, is his funny and moving memoir of a life spent writing popular fiction.
Notable debuts include Callum McSorley’s Glaswegian gangland thriller Squeaky Clean (Pushkin Vertigo); Jo Callaghan’s In the Blink of an Eye (Simon & Schuster), a police procedural with an AI detective; Scorched Grace by Margot Douaihy (Pushkin Vertigo), featuring queer punk nun investigator Sister Holiday; and the caustically funny Thirty Days of Darkness (Orenda) by Jenny Lund Madsen (translated from the Danish by Megan E Turney).
There have been welcome additions to series, including a third book, Case Sensitive (Zaffre), for AK Turner’s forensic investigator Cassie Raven, and a second, The Wheel of Doll (Pushkin Vertigo), for Jonathan Ames’s LA private eye Happy Doll, who is shaping up to be the perfect hardboiled 21st-century hero.
Other must-reads for fans of American crime fiction include Ozark Dogs (Headline) by Eli Cranor, a powerful story of feuding Arkansas families; SA Cosby’s Virginia-set police procedural All the Sinners Bleed (Headline); Megan Abbott’s nightmarish Beware the Woman (Virago); and Rebecca Makkai’s foray into very dark academia, I Have Some Questions for You (Fleet). There are shades of James Ellroy in Jordan Harper’s Hollywood-set tour de force Everybody Knows (Faber), while Raymond Chandler’s hero Philip Marlowe gets a timely do-over from Scottish crime doyenne Denise Mina in The Second Murderer (Harvill Secker).
As Mick Herron observed in his Slow Horses origin novel, The Secret Hours (Baskerville), there’s a long list of spy novelists who have been pegged as the heir to John le Carré. Herron must be in pole position for principal legatee, but it’s been a good year for espionage generally: standout novels include Matthew Richardson’s The Scarlet Papers (Michael Joseph), John Lawton’s Moscow Exile (Grove Press) and Harriet Crawley’s The Translator (Bitter Lemon).
Historical crime has also been well served. Highlights include Emma Flint’s excellent Other Women (Picador), based on a real 1924 murder case; Laura Shepherd-Robinson’s story of a fortune teller’s quest for identity in Georgian high society, The Square of Sevens (Mantle); and SG MacLean’s tale of Restoration revenge and retribution, The Winter List (Quercus). There are echoes of Chester Himes in Viper’s Dream (No Exit) by Jake Lamar, which begins in 1930s Harlem, while Palace of Shadows (Mantle) by Ray Celestin, set in the late 19th century, takes the true story of American weapons heiress Sarah Winchester’s San Jose mansion and transports it to Yorkshire, with chillingly gothic results.
The latest novel in Vaseem Khan’s postcolonial India series, Death of a Lesser God (Hodder), is also well worth the read, as are Deepti Kapoor’s present-day organised crime saga Age of Vice (Fleet) and Parini Shroff’s darkly antic feminist revenge drama The Bandit Queens (Atlantic).
While psychological thrillers are thinner on the ground than in previous years, the quality remains high, with Liz Nugent’s complex and heartbreaking tale of abuse, Strange Sally Diamond (Penguin Sandycove), and Sarah Hilary’s disturbing portrait of a family in freefall, Black Thorn (Macmillan), being two of the best.
Penguin Modern Classics has revived its crime series, complete with iconic green livery, with works by Georges Simenon, Dorothy B Hughes and Ross MacDonald. There have been reissues by other publishers, too – forgotten gems including Celia Fremlin’s 1959 holiday‑from-hell novel, Uncle Paul (Faber), and Richard Wright’s The Man Who Lived Underground (Vintage). Finished in 1942 but only now published in its entirety, the latter is an account of an innocent man who takes refuge from racist police officers in the sewers of Chicago – part allegorical, part brutally realistic and, unfortunately, wholly topical.

Hunter
Occupation: FBI Special Agent - Covert Ops
Traits: Observant, calculating, motherly, protective
Bio:
Born a dual citizen of South Africa and the USA Anika grew up knowing she was an outlier among the general population. Before they were 10 a habit of protecting those smaller than them had begun to show and the older Anika got the more trouble she got into as a result. Without drive or passion for a certain field they were guided towards service to help channel their anger and apparent distain for most of the world.
After joining the military she learned two things, one she had an investigative mind unlike any other in her squad, two she was very good at making things hurt and not leaving evidence behind. Taking advantage of these talents Anika was pushed through the ranks, and soon was included in high risk top secret missions where she earned herself the name Thanatos. God of Death.
After Ten years of service and countless ops that never made it into a file they decided their talents deserved to be used on home soil. Heading to Quantico seemed like the most obvious next step for them and they were barely half way through their training program when they were approached to join a more covert division of the bureau.
That's where they have been since. Performing undercover and highly sensitive covert operations including that of the high profile kidnapping of up and coming designer Willow Lane. The kidnapping would have been a standard one, hardly something that would be put on Anika's radar, were it not for chatter in a trafficking ring they were infiltrating. The ring were known for a multitude of crimes from prostitution to gun and drug running. Perhaps the most sick of all was the snuff videos they provided to willing bidders. Willow was meant to die but something unexpected had happened instead.
She had killed her would be murderer.
Suddenly the case was on Anika's desk and the more she dug in, followed sightings and intel the stranger the case became. More and more missing persons cases started to crop up the longer Anika looked into the areas that Willow had been seen but they couldn't be connected. Some of these were over a decade old.
She started talking to families and friends and bosses. Multiple people who just one day never came home or stopped reaching out or just never showed up to begin with. There was no link to the trafficking ring, not one that she could see. The case got more and more complicated the more people she added to her dossier. There was either a very large mass grave somewhere in the Appalachian mountains or she was about to uncover a town of prisoners.
Deciding they weren't going to get any answers while still chasing Willow they set up their sting to get in and get Willow out.
Before Anika could move in to break up the ring the base of operations that they had narrowed it down to went up in flames. Last Anika saw reference to Willow Lane was a grainy camera image as she wandered barefoot and bloody away from the blaze.
There was no sign of Willow after that. They checked every police station and hospital they could think of, searched through woods for months. Still that list of missing people burned a hole in their brain begging to be solved. Maybe it wasn't connected to Willow then but perhaps it was why they couldn't find her now.
Knowing that they were heading into the unknown they prepared for a mission that might take far longer than anyone would hope for.
Rolling into Huntsville seemed harmless enough but something was wrong, they could feel it in their bones.
