My very legit Nintendo DSi Enhanced and totally existent physical cartridge with the game Pokémon White stopped chugging and crashing every 5 minutes just after I left Mistralton, so I guess the town was the issue. We continue on to POKEMON WHITE DAY 6. A lot of things happened today, so I'll put it all under a break.

Cheren and I went down into the bowels of Twist Mountain and witnessed a fascinating chunk of ice; of all the ice I've seen in my life, that was some of it! I could tell something was bothering Cher, but I didn't want to pry. Then Team Pokemon Rights Terrorism showed up when we were just leaving, which made things a little awkward, but we dispatched them quickly, and Ruby evolved into Emboar. Cher and I parted ways then, and then I got to Icirrus and went straight to the gym because it looked like it was about to rain.

Ruby and Jasper went wild on the baby bears and snowflakes, with the rest of my team watching enthusiastically -- Yuri going so far as to act as a cheerleader for them. It was really cute, especially when Jasper volunteered to once again solo the battle vs the leader (Brycen's Beartic threatened Ruby with Brine and Moxie is very convenient). She actually evolved mid-fight, as soon as she knocked out Cryogonal, and it was such a hype moment I jumped to celebrate, slipped on the ice and fell on my butt. Good times. Ow.

Cher and Bianca were arriving just as I was leaving, and by their looks I knew the conversation was going to be important. Cher shyly said, and I quote, "a lot of soul-searching has been done" since we'd first bumped into Champion Alder and had a heart to heart about how we wanted to live our lives (this happened a few days ago, I didn't mention it because it didn't seem important. And we were going to, but then freelance ninjas hired by team Plasma ambushed us and said N was waiting for me at the Dragonspire Tower. A few emotions were running high at the moment, and Cher stomped ahead furious. Bianca looked at the verge of a panic attack, so I left her at the Pokemon Center with Professor Juniper Senior and ran after Cher, Brycen right after me.

The Tower was besieged with grunts. We beat some of them up and Ferb evolved in the process, finally making team EAGLES into the best version of themselves. But progress was slow and so Cher and Brycen stayed behind to stall them while I snuck my way up to the top, where something very large and very furious was throwing a tantrum. At the very top I found N talking to a LARGE FUCKOFF WYVERN-HORSE THING who is apparently Reshiram. N said something about wanting me to challenge him -- I have no idea what he wants from me, I'm just a guy. I think deep down he knows what he's doing is wrong and wants someone to stop him, and I just so happened to be there that one time in Accumula, so he picked me to be his rival. Which technically makes me Enemy of the Crown, huh.

Oh boy. I hope my mom is not in a dungeon somewhere.

Anyway, they left, then we gathered and left to the Pokecenter, and Alder conveniently showed up with another half of the legend that says a second Legendary, Zekrom, will respond to whoever gets a Dark Stone from Relic Castle. Knowing that this whole thing has been made my business by The King of Unova himself, I had no choice but to go. I bid farewell to the elders and the girls, flew back to Nimbasa and walked back to the Desert Resort to be absorbed by the shifting sands of the Relic Castle and fulfill my destiny, or whatever.

Week 7: Adventures in Adulting

After a long trip to New Zealand, it was time to head back to our reality in Sydney. It was more real than we would’ve liked and left us wishing for just a few more hours in the carefree mountain ranges of the Fiordlands. 

Tuesday - The Big Reveal

We made our way back to Sydney making sure to load up at the duty free before security. Upon arriving at our house, we realized that none of us brought a key to the house with us. Tried every door we could, but nothing would budge… “guys, what about that second-floor window?”

After not so smoothly breaking and entering into our own house, the full scope of what needed to be done made itself painfully clear. The trash in the back had attracted a pack of rats who now had the backyard to themselves, if you know anything about me you likely know that I am terribly afraid of rats. Needless to say, it was a huge blow to give up such a big part of our place. All the trash removal companies quoted us figures that were hard to swallow, so we set our jaws and became determined to ride out the trash until the next Tuesday morning which, of course, was when trash was collected. 

The house has no central AC so the air felt very stagnant and unhealthy. The multitude of flies and maggots invading the cup of coffee left out didn’t soften the picture. The dishes left in the dishwasher were covered in black mold and the house we had pretty much had a day to move in still needed several necessities including groceries. To top it off, we all had no clean clothes and the house lacked a dryer. Oh, and there was no wifi. 

As we pushed the last cart of supplies and pest control products into the house that night, the respect we all had for our parents had probably never been so high. 

Wednesday - Settling in

Today we went to our Term 1 classes for the first time. It was one of the two classes I shared with Joe. The professor was passionate about his subject. After class, we met some Brits and followed their lead to an on-campus bar for a pint and a round of pool for lunch.

That night, the friends we traveled to New Zealand with came over and we threw our thongs on for a stroll to the beach and then enjoyed some late-night Mac’ers. (G’day)

Thursday

Joe and I went to surf at Bondi Beach today. We also got wind of this 5-day long party pass that caters to UNSW students and gets you into venues around the city each night. That night became yet another Ivy Thursday. A night I could’ve, maybe, sworn was better than before.

Friday - Storms and Shows

Joe has been harping on about this show for a while called Dark. It’s a German series on Netflix that sucked all of us in from the start. We ended up binging the show most of the day, baking cookies and long-winded wifi technical support calls being the only things to puncture our routine. 

Saturday - I Love beautiful Sunset Days

We took another trip to the Blue Mountains, this time we went to the town of Wentworth Falls and took the trail down to the base of the waterfalls. We spent most of the day dipping into the naturally eroded pools and basking in the sun on the nearby dry rocks. 

Then the sky shifted and we opened our eyes to massive raindrops picking up and falling with a quickening intensity, before we knew it we were in the valley of the blue mountains during a full-on thunderstorm. We quickly got to the other side and slowly made our way back up and out of the trail. Towards the top, we found shelter in a naturally protected inlet carved out of the side of the mountain while the storm passed. It also gave us an incredible view of the valley below. We got to see the full water cycle in action… when the rain stopped the clouds cleared and then clouds started to form right over the bottom of the valley and could be seen floating upwards to reform for a later storm. Mind blown. The storm’s departure left the sky clear for a spectacular sunset. 

Sunday - Running a house is hard

Today was the day of solutions (at last). We finally got the wifi up and online, the massive heaps of trash and its inhabitants were carted off by a trash collection agency we scheduled (caved into ordering), and the weekly rent-a-dryer service delivered a dryer. We also had a full-standing AC unit dropped off by a Facebook Marketplace seller. Our next problems were the fuses for the outlets constantly being blown by all of the devices connected to them, namely when the AC unit and dryer were plugged in and turned on. And there was the problem of next to no cleaning supplies, specifically those strong enough to clean the artificial turf of rat poo. 

But the battle had been won and so we celebrated our progress with a day on the beach. Except when a storm moved in, it left a long line for the busses… so we tried to bike.

That night my friend Sam and I went to see Dr. Andrew Huberman give his talk on the mind-body contract and then opened up the floor to a Q&A.

The takeaways that stuck with me were the instant stress relief nervous system mechanism we can all tap into and the Body Still, Mind Awake practice. The first happens when we take a deep breath into our nose and then take another inhale and then breathe out through our mouth. The second is a method he’s found that creatives across history have used to varying degrees, from Einstein stopping his walks abruptly, as he found his thinking would change based on the lack of incorporation of movement, to Rick Rubin taking a daily hour-long lie down where he keeps his mind active and thinking in full sentences while keeping his body completely still. 

Monday

Time to seriously catch up on school. I’m writing this blog in between 4 hour sessions of watching all the lectures I missed on two times speed. Something, anything to mix up all of this watching.

I think this is one of my favorite ACOSF quotes (and there are SO many good ones) because it is a reminder that the bad things can’t break you if you don’t let them.

Rocks are steadfast and enduring. They are used to fortify and protect. They are relied upon for their strength and durability. How often do we see ruins of the past and feel awe at the rock walls that still stand, even after thousands of years?

But sometimes I don’t feel like the immovable rock—often, I feel like I am the surf crashing against the rocks. Wild, raging, temperamental, fickle. Dangerous and deadly. Always seeking the solid ground, throwing myself at something steady and lasting, grasping for the calm in the storm.

I think the quote is symbolic of Nesta’s journey in ACOSF—at the start, she is the raging sea, lost and thrashing and violently moody. And Cassian is the rock: steady, persistent, patient. And as we watch Nesta heal and settle, we see that she never loses that fire inside of her, never let’s go of the steel in her bones, but we see that shift from wild and restless wave to still and steady rock.

We are the rock against which the surf crashes. Nothing can break us.

But if you’re still the wave, that’s okay, too. Just keep climbing that mountain.

Create a Gorgeous Professional Photo Book of Your Work with Saal Digital

It’s not as difficult or as expensive as it might sound as I learned while trying out Saal Digital’s Professional Line Photo Book service recently. Not only was I able to create an impressive photo book in no time, the quality of my 16 x 12-inch tome from Saal Digital was exceptional and the process was relatively painless. So, whether you’re creating a one-off photo book of your work as a self-promotional tool or want to produce something specific for a client or, perhaps, a series of photo books to sell on your website or gift to friends, Saal Digital’s service offers some great options. Here’s how I made mine.

The web-based layout process for making a photo book with Saal Digital was simple and straightforward. Picking Images Creating a photo book is quite a bit of a different experience from producing a single print to hang on a wall. The main, obvious, difference is your book will consist of a group of images, not just one photo. While the images in a photo book don’t, necessarily, need to be tied together by a theme, it helps if they’re related in some way to tell a visual story. Travel photography, in particular, is well suited for book form so whether you’ve shot towering Redwoods in California or castles and surrounding landscapes in Germany, you likely have a wealth of potential material in your portfolio for a photo book. In my case, I recently returned from a press trip to San Diego where I shot several thousand images of elite athletes in a variety of sports including BMX racing and aerial stunts, track and field, rowing, diving, tennis, surfing, and mountain biking.

The layflat binding gives the book a professional look and feel. From that large group of photos, I narrowed down a few dozen shots I considered to be my very best. I tried to choose images that showed a mixture of the sports I photographed so the book would feature a range of athletes and action. In many ways, making your image selects is the most difficult part of making a photo book with Saal Digital since the technical process is so simple.

Size, format, cover, and paper options abound when making a Professional Line Photo Book with Saal Digital. Picking a Book Saal Digital offers a wide variety of photo book options, but I wanted to test their premium Professional Line of books because I thought it would most appeal to Outdoor Photographer readers. They do cost a bit more, but Professional Line Photo Books really are the best way to showcase your images. Some of the features we appreciated include a “LayFlat” binding that lets you place your photos across an entire double-page spread without losing any detail in the “gutter” of the book. (More about this later.) Also, there are no distracting manufacturer’s logos on the book, and you can have the production barcode removed. Saal Digital also guarantees color fastness for 75 years so your images won’t lose their luster over time.

The glossy paper really made my images stand out. Options abound in terms of size formats and paper and cover possibilities. I went with 16 x 12-inch Professional Line Photo Book option in a Landscape format. (There are also Portrait and Square format options.) If you are planning a large multi-book project, Saal Digital will give you an individual quote via a bulk order form. I just wanted to produce a single book for my test, so I selected the 26-page option with an acrylic cover and glossy paper. The shiny acrylic cover option costs a bit more but it’s worth it and helped highlight the sports theme of my book. On the other hand, the less expensive leatherette cover is a solid choice for a wedding or portrait photography book.

The One Minute Photo Book option was not only fast, its automated features helped me create an attractive layout. Creating the Book Creating the book is where the fun really begins. There are three ways to do it: either do it directly on the Saal Digital website; or download the free Saal Design Software to your computer; or get the free Saal Digital mobile app for your smartphone or tablet computer. There is some additional functionality if you use the Saal Design Software, but I decided to go directly to the Saal Digital website and create my book there since I suspect that’s how most users will do it. I picked the “One Minute Photo Book” design option since it was recommended by Saal Digital and promised a “fast and easy” process with some customization. If you want even more flexibility, there’s an AutoLayout option, and a PDF upload option if you’ve designed your book project through an external program.

Color rendition was excellent throughout the book. After selecting the margin size you want, the next step is to upload your images. The “One Minute Photo” design option will autofill most of the layout of your book with your images. I was pleasantly surprised with the photo order and layout selections during this automated process with the software choosing an image for the cover I hadn’t considered. I quite liked the cover choice along with some of the other layouts that Saal Digital picked. You can, of course, go back and changed layouts manually but I skipped that and saved my selections for the rest of the 26-page book, which is left open. My favorite part of the layout process was picking photos for double-page spreads. As a magazine editor, I love how a great image looks spread across two pages in print and to have this feature in a layflat book was even more exciting.

Here’s an eye-popping two-page spread featuring one of my BMX images. Final Thoughts Once you’re done laying it out, the final step is to order the book. Mine arrived just a week or so afterwards in a well-protected cardboard box. The images and visual flow of the book looked even better when I actually had it in my hands and I thought the glossy paper made the photos really pop. I left mine text-free to put emphasis on the images themselves but there are multiple ways to add text and other design touches to your book. Overall, Saal Digital’s Professional Line Photo Books are a great way for photographers to tell an elegant visual story with their images.
