Aspins? Yes please!

I have lived with dogs all my life. I can’t even think of a time when i didn’t have a dog.

I don’t discriminate, i’m a fan of all breeds. I’m also a fan of mongrels. In the Philippines, mixed breed, common street dogs used to be called Askals or ASo (Dog)- KALye (street); now they Aspins, or ASong (dog)-PINoy (Filipino).

Aspins are usually a common sight in Philippine streets. No one cares for them nor about them.

I’ve owned several aspins, and honestly, were i not living in a small apartment, i’d foster or even adopt more of them.

My last encounter with an aspin that became close to me was our office building dog. She was owned by the caretaker of the building. Me and some officemates were quite fond of her and named her Jean Marie.

I started bringing food and blankets for Jean Marie, and slowly she became attached to me. I attempted to bring her home to my apartment, but she was a little too big for my home, so i had to bring her back to the office, but continued to constantly care for her. We discovered she was pregnant, and once she gave birth, some officemates took home her puppies to give those pups better and loving homes.

I took the runt of the litter, sadly, he died at the vet because he was too weak.

The aspins i’ve known and owned have been the most obedient, happiest, most loyal dogs. I don’t know why, but they seem to know that they are different. That makes them more interesting.

It’s always heartbreaking to see dogs with no homes, emaciated, in poor health wandering the streets. Sadly, not all of them can be rescued or put into shelters for better care.

But those who are lucky enough to be rescued by PAWS or CARAPhil usually end up in caring homes. And the transformation from street dog to house pet is amazing.
