Finally finished the final trailer for This Game of Hours (full release this October, probably around Halloween).
It’s a horror TTRPG where folks build their own haunted town, their own mode of horror, all set in three eras of their choosing.

If you want people to forego their empathy, do not ask them to eliminate it.
You have to ask them to invest it in something blameless.
Something irreproachable. Something cute.
Something they would take one look at, regardless of social distance, and say “I would die for himb.”
Because if folks would die for it, they would commit atrocity for it.
You want to create fascists? Make cute shit that exudes coziness, cuddliness, and the unrelenting whims of defense.

So I have to store away my content creation computer and the rest of the home office into storage because my cats see me as an object to territory spray
and all I can think about
are all of the asinine defenses
for these cats that despite me trying to work with them, giving them anti-depressants, Fel-away, and literally everything else
for five years
have made me and only me live in a litter box.
Because they are cute. And it is funny to see me suffer.
The landlord noticed and issued a demand for cleaning under threat of eviction. We are trying to rehome these cats but the wait list is six months.
So now my entire household is in frenzy deep cleaning mode, what remains of my stuff is being removed from the house, barely sleeping and eating, all of us stressed and in a trauma hole because these cats have pissed so badly on my stuff that they have soaked the wood of the floors (despite the repeated cleanings).
But they can’t possibly do any wrong right?
They’re cute. And that is what matters.
Cute is all that matters. Ever.

So this is a long venting post about my life, but I don’t really have other places to vent on the Internet and maybe some of you will find this amusing. This isn’t a bit. All of this is stuff that has me pissed off, awake at 6:38 AM EDT, typing on a porch, ready to cry and scream and fight God.
Life sucks right now.
And I’ve been making so much lemonade out of lemons that I am now the Citrus Deity.
In no particular order:
- our landlord has been super patient with us, but we owe like 3k of back rent and are like this close to being evicted. that’s great.
- i’m unemployed right now, due to a bunch of academic political bullshit and the fact that when it comes to having resilience in the face of bigoted co-workers or passive aggressive office culture who in no uncertain terms let me know that they hope I die, I’m a wet paper towel made of crying
- there’s a whole ass interpersonal drama between me and a long time friend
- i have really bad acid reflux and it hurts like the dickens
- and then there’s the fucking ghost, but we’ll get to her
- i was accidentally a dick to a bunch of my streaming friends because of prior interpersonal drama and it sucked a lot. apologies and understanding is there, but also god damn it, why am i like this?
- every day i wake up and i just continually feel like, wow—there’s no way to get out of this failure spiral is there? I’m 39 going on 40, a PhD dropout in philosophy and theatre, my streaming career is stalling because my headspace is all fucked, my TTRPG development is also stalling because my headspace is fucked and it feels like I’m shouting into a void, i’ve had to do fundraisers just to get our phones back?, so like another fundraiser for rent is just… alado;mal;sdjfalksdjf
- don’t even get me started on the system shit (yes, i’m a system, etc. etc.)
- and then there’s the fucking ghost, the newest addition to Mount Fucklife. I’m so mad, I’m not even like… spooked out or creeped out. This fucking OLD LADY with a creepy fucking distorted face glitches my phone camera and of fucking course the video is corrupted and somebody in the system decided “nope not dealing with this” and deletes it. But it doesn’t actually matter if anyone believes this, the important part here is that last night, my long time partner ends up taking a swing at me in her sleep!?, quickly apologizes, and says she had a dream where an old woman wouldn’t stop yelling at the two of us about how we’re sleeping in the same bed and we’re not married. And my partner got so mad that she had to punch to get out of the dream. I asked her to describe it and lo and fucking behold, oooo spooky, it’s the same old lady.
Ya’ll. I am being haunted by a fucking old lady who is soooooooo upset and can’t update her fucking retrograde ass beliefs about sexual ethics and relationships during everything else. Like for FUCK’S SAKE, lady, READ THE FUCKING ROOM.
I do NOT have time, energy, or the spoons to somehow explain 21st century sexual and relationship ethics, or polyamory, or interracial relationships to a motherfucking old racist biddy ass conservative motherfucking PHANTASM.
YOU SPECTRAL BINT, I HAVE ACID REFLUX. GET ME SOME FUCKING PEPCID AND TUMS AND THEN MAYBE. MAYBE WE WILL FUCKING TALK.

Ok I want to say something controversial
But you are responsible for your own safe spaces. You can block tags, block words, block people.
“But i thought fandom was supposed to be a safe space” —yeah you have to curate it.
Unfortunately one persons’s safe space may be another persons’ trigger. That’s ok. Simply block them, block the tag, block the word etc. They can do the same for you.
Maybe I’m just out of touch, but I’ve been around since the days of “don’t like, don’t read” and that’s a good philosophy. If it squicks you, scroll past. If it causes you anxiety or upset, block! Plenty of people are responsive if you ask them to tag an upsetting trigger. And if they’re dicks about it, block em.

Ashenheart
Ashenheart is a TTRPG that I helped do some layout and editing for, and I want to shine a spotlight on it.
Firstly, it's got an extremely unique setting. 1940s post-cataclysm adventuring in a world of gods and demons, where hell is an ocean that has flooded out cities, and where people have domesticated giant sea slugs.
Second, it's super easy to learn. The core roll is just a d10 on a chart, modified by a few things you can choose to invoke.
Also, damage advances your character. In the same style as Darkest Dungeon, if you take enough Stress, you can develop new permanent Virtues and and Neuroses that you can invoke on later rolls.
Ashenheart is its designer's first TTRPG, and I'd love to see the community support it. It's a really neat game, and folks taking a risk and making their first game is how we get new ideas in the scene.

As a society, we need to return to plant symbolism, but not the obscure and arbitrary stuff—a lot of plants' meanings were connected to their medicinal properties or other properties. More of that, and include the ecological roles and values too. More plant symbolism where plants "mean" things because they really do literally mean those things
Red poppies came to symbolize remembrance of fallen soldiers and hope for a peaceful future because they flourished in the fields after WW1 due to the disturbance caused by the bombings, which created the perfect environment for an early-successional-stage plant. Do you see what I'm saying

As you all know. I work at an elementary school. And for Christmas, a bunch of kids got tamagotchis. Well. One girl fucking FORGOT her tamagotchi at school. And I saw it and was like oh fuck. So I took it home for the weekend and now am saddled with the responsibility of keeping it alive until Monday afternoon when I see her again.
