Thinking about how Joel despised everything the Fireflies stood for, and yet 'When you're lost in the darkness, look for the light' ended up applying to him the most - the person in the apocalypse who after meeting Ellie found the most light.

okay but i love how joel's tendency of caring for others and not himself extends to emotions, too

like at the outbreak, we have him REPEATEDLY reassuring sarah and trying to shove her face against his shoulder to shield her, and even before that, we even have him cutting himself off from complaining about his day so he won't put that on her. and then later with ellie, we have the "i know it looks scary" with the bridge and his whole thing about TRYING to help her process having to hurt someone in kansas city. and even in the last episode where he tries to check in on ellie and IMMEDIATELY reassures her that being quiet is okay if she wants to be quiet.

like for a man who SO forcefully distances himself from his own emotions, my GUY.

GOD ABOVE ARE YOU HYPER-FOCUSED ON OTHER PEOPLE'S.

i do fucking LOVE what a complex person we get in the joel on outbreak day.

like when tommy still hesitates even though he has the gun when mrs. adler is running at them, joel DOESN'T. he is clearly surprised. he is clearly wondering what in the FUCK is going on.

but he also IMMEDIATELY eliminates a threat to his family.

AND THEN HE THROWS HIS WEAPON AWAY AND GOES TO CHECK ON HIS DAUGHTER.

like the way joel IMMEDIATELY cups sarah's face and APOLOGIZES. we have just seen EXACTLY how brutal joel can get, but his IMMEDIATE concern is "baby, i'm sorry" bc he knows he just scared sarah. and his whole "but we're gonna be brave" HURTS ME SO BAD. GOD HE'S SUCH A FATHER.

and like. they are in a RUSH. they are trying to GET OUT. and he still pauses long enough to yell at their neighbor to get back inside and lock the doors. his family is still his priority, but he still obviously CARES. he didn't have to stop. he didn't have to say anything. but joel IS inherently a protector.

it's just that his family will always get his protection first.

i also fucking ADORE how much we see tommy defer to joel. like they have a ZOMBIE running at them, and tommy is still asking joel what they're gonna do here. and tommy goes to stop to help the family and clearly doesn't like the idea of not stopping, BUT HE DOES. and AGAIN we have joel trying to look out for sarah emotionally as well as physically with the immediate "someone else'll stop." like the tone of his voice isn't him reassuring himself for his own decisions. he doesn't regret that choice. he is saying that ONLY for sarah. also the way he is CONTINUALLY tucking her face down against his shoulder. even in this madness, he has the presence of mind to try and shield her from this.

so in this like. TEN MINUTE OR LESS STRETCH we have already established: 1. joel can get brutal with what seems like very little internal conflict if he feels he has to 2. joel is also a VERY attentive and gentle father even in fucking CHAOS 3. joel is the one who makes the calls in the family

okay but i just fucking love how joel could NOT stop caring about ellie even when he was actively pretending that he didn't and trying SO HARD to see her as just cargo

like we have him grabbing her immediately when they're attacked in the museum, asking her about her knife tricks, and even have freaking, "yeah, i know it looks scary" with the bridge where he's fucking alREADY IMAGINING THAT SHE MIGHT BE SCARED OF SOMETHING BC HE'S THINKING ABOUT HER PERSPECTIVE AND VALIDATING WHAT SHE'S FEELING IN A WAY THAT ISN'T MEANT TO MAKE HER FEEL BAD

JUST STRAIGHT UP "yeah, it's okay if you're scared of that. it does look scary."

the jb brain rot is so severe currently but just thinking about brienne noticing jaime’s different laughs like when he’s being sarcastic and mocking, his laugh is so sharp and cutting vs when he’s genuinely happy that he laughs very freely and he the smallest dimple (!!!!) shows on his cheeks and his face is more relaxed vs when he’s smiling around others and it is that infamous cutting smile of his that looks like he finds everything amusing and he takes nothing seriously vs the gentle smile he gives brienne. brienne who is so used to observing and just watching from the sidelines, who starts to notice the little quirks jaime has, and she learns that when he laughs it does not mean he’s making a fool of her rather, he’s laughing with her, and laughter directed her way isn’t always to mock or taunt her, and learning to be more comfortable with her own laughter and be less guarded —not just with jaime btw, but towards others too.
