a friendly reminder that microaggressions against asians can also look like this:
pretending to gag at asian food
pretending to be weirded out by asian customs and cultures
excusing cultural appropriation (often through ignoring the stories of asians who have been mocked for wearing their ethnic dress while praising a white person for doing so)
not trying to learn how to pronounce an asian person's ethnic name correctly, or asking, "can i call you by something else?"
adopting an asian name for the ~aesthetic~
using the words "oriental" and "exotic" to describe asian people, particular asian women
ignoring the experiences and stories of south, southeast, *edit* west asians, and central asians
making sweeping assumptions about asian countries (including their political, historical and cultural landscape)
treating the entire asian community as a monolith and ignoring the fact that the experiences of asian nationals are remarkably different from the asian diaspora/migrant community
co-opting asian aesthetics into creative media without acknowledging their history

The events that unfolded over the past 24 hours in Atlanta were not isolated incidents. Hate crimes against Asian Americans have increased nearly 150% in the US in the last year.
Last June, in the wake up of yet another uprising in hate crimes committed by white supremacists, we released the following statement:
White supremacists, Nazis, and other purveyors of hate can fully fuck off. They are not welcome here.
These words are as true today as they were then. We stand with the Asian American community. If you see hate speech on Tumblr, please report it. That shit is not tolerated here.
To help the survivors and families of yesterday’s hate crimes, please consider donating to a nonprofit like the Atlanta branch of Asian Americans Advancing Justice if you can. If you can’t, consider spreading the word. We’ll list more resources and reblogs over on @action as we find them.
As always, please make sure you are taking care of yourself as well. If you’re struggling for any reason, please reach out to any of the free and confidential counseling services listed here.

in addition to this great thread, i recommend reading “how the irish became white” by noel ignatiev.  i do expect a lot of fighting against these facts because these lies and myth are so ingrained and now have become a part of the community and the sense of self and pride of irish people.

Hey, just a heads up to everyone who follows my blog: if you see anybody with an orange and black square in their bio, they’re a transphobe.
Idiots on TikTok have been coming out in droves in support of some bullshit identity called “super straight” which basically means that they’re only attracted to cis people 🙄 They’re trying to wedge themselves into the LGBTQ+ community and their claim is that it’s phobic toward them to say that they’re transphobic… it’s just a gargantuan cishet headache.
So, to reiterate: orange and black squares = the “super straight” flag = transphobic dogwhistle. Stay safe everyone!

A Slight Intro!
Hi there if you’re new to my ramblings! I’ll be updating more with the swing into the school year, whether that be through re-blogs or original content. Some things you’ll need to know: you can call me Sonder or Ryan, and I use she/hers pronouns. I’m a microbiology major, an artist, and an eclectic witch (though I’m exploring green witchcraft). I’ve studied abroad. I’ve been across the US. Now, I’m here.
Not sure how we ended up crossing paths, but I will structure these as open letters to whoever comes across them. That said, I leave you with a quote:
“The more I read, the more I acquire, the more certain I am that I know nothing.”
- Voltaire

Been a minute.
I started this blog to find myself. Then, like so many other projects in life, I very quickly put it to the back burner as more interests and responsibilities headed my way. I don’t know my audience. I don’t know what I plan to post; maybe it will vary by day. So much in this world has changed, and what I saw for myself 5 years ago is not where I am now. Undoubtedly though I have succeeded beyond my wildest dreams.
Perhaps it is anthropology I will share; humans are incredible creatures. It is deeply saddening to see the oppression displayed today (that has continued for far too long), that our brothers and sisters have to fight for equal rights. For we are, unquestionably, brothers and sisters, siblings, kin regardless of traditional family boundaries. We may have grown up in different geographic locations, spoke different languages in different life experiences due to the social construct of race; we may express our gender or lack of in different ways, and we love who we love. But we are human.
Perhaps it is science, that field in which I hold so much passion for. So much potential from our environment is yet to be found, from the depths of the sea to beyond our own galaxy. From creatures large to those beneath eye level notice. There will always be more to discover in this day, ways to improve and to do so in a way that preserves nature for generations to come.
I’m closer to knowing what I want to cast into the technological void. Maybe we can all spark our own movements, reaching out to one another in understanding and in tolerance. To share things that make people think and question, to provide as relatively unbiased data as I can, and to create a safe space for those who want to learn. To learn from those further down the path of life than I myself am. To better myself and help those around me.
