as a reminder to literally anyone and everyone who even so much as considers this: AO3 has NO autosave ability when you're making drafts, so PLEASE do not use it instead of a writing program.

If their server goes down, if you hit a wrong button and refresh the page or go back to the previous page, if you accidentally close the browser, if your browser or device crashes, etc etc etc you are shit out of luck. Your work is gone forever, it didn't backup to anywhere and there is NO recovery option. Even TUMBLR's drafting ability is supposed to autosave and often does.

If you want to avoid gdocs that's fine- there's other text editors with simple autosave options, like Online Notepad or Digital Scholar's notepad, or there's still local-drive writing programs that are free and open source, like LibreOffice. PLEASE do not use AO3 to write your stories into directly. It has NOTHING.

This is just a basic idea of my goals for 2023: Finish a novel and work toward being published Write at least 1 article a month on MediumWrite at least an hour a day (Like Wednesday!) Find a decent-paying job I enjoy and doesn't treat me like sh*t Rebound financially so I can start building my savings Learn Python, Javascript, and CSS Expand my shop to include a new fandom Read at least 1 book a month Make my happiness a priority over pleasing others

What I accomplished in 2023:

While not an official job, I have been making more money with my Etsy shop and have been actually enjoying it. I don't make enough to live off of but it does help.

I added 34 fandoms to my shop and have more planned.

I had a Goodreads goal to read 12 books in 2023 which I completed. However, I didn't read 1 book each month. Most months I read at at least two books and some I didn't read at all.

I prioritized my mental health and started journalling more, taking medication and trying to work with my braid rather than against it.

GOALS FOR 2024:

Personal:

Read 24 books (preferably 12 physical/12 Kindle)

Finish one rough draft for a novel

Learn one new skill

Professional:

Expand to at least 10 more fandoms

Double profits

Expand to offer printables

Health:

Try to journal at least once a week

Find ways to keep up personal hygiene practices when depression hits

Figure out a sleep schedule that works and stick to it

My Goals & Aspirations for 2023

I often see posts about curating your own online experience that make the point, “content creators aren’t your parents.” And, yes, that is absolutely true! And I try not to be like “as a parent,“ but as a parent…

EVEN PARENTS ARE SUPPOSED TO ENCOURAGE RESPONSIBLE READING/VIEWING BEHAVIOR. NOT filter everything ahead of time for their kid.

When my kiddo was 5, his pediatrician was asking him the usual Well Child Visit questions (“What are your favorite foods? What do you do to get your body moving? Do you know what to do if you get lost in a public place?” Etc.) and she asked, “What do you do if you see something on TV that scares or upsets you?”

I piped up like, “Oh, he doesn’t watch TV without one of us in the room,” which was true at the time and is still largely true now. She said, “Yes, but that won’t always be the case, so make sure you’re talking to him about what to do if he sees something that upsets him.”

So we started talking to him about that, and the answer is simple: “Turn it off or leave the room, and talk to someone you trust about what you saw and what you’re feeling.”

The answer is NOT “Ask your parents to make sure you never see anything upsetting again,” because that’s just not possible — and ultimately that would be doing the kid a disservice, since sooner or later he’s going to be out in the world where we can’t control what he watches or reads. That doesn’t mean we don’t try to make sure he’s watching/reading age-appropriate stuff, it just means that’s not the only safeguard he has — and that’s a good thing.

So yes, content creators aren’t your parents and aren’t responsible for making sure you never see anything you don’t like — but also, your own parents should have taught you what to do when that happens. So if they didn’t, take it from me, your internet mom:

Turn it off.

Walk away.

Talk to someone you trust about how you’re feeling.

And leave the person who created the thing that upset you alone.
