‘Without Hermione, Harry would’ve died in Book 1/ Hermione was smarter than Harry in every way in Book 1'
Let’s debunk these shall we ?
*friendly reminder that I am not hating on Hermione. She is amazing, brave and did a lot for the trio, it’s just that the statement above is really not plausible.
*another friendly reminder that I am not ‘ignoring’ Ron’s contributions, he did a lot too, kudos to him for that, I’m merely focusing on Harry as he is the least appreciated
*it’s going to be a long rant so have patience and read through :)
‘’As they jostled their way through a crowd of confused Hufflepuffs, Harry suddenly grabbed Ron’s arm.
‘I’ve just thought – Hermione.’
‘What about her?’
‘She doesn’t know about the troll’
Ron bit his lip.’’
The time when Harry was the one who recalled Hermione at a moment of crisis and was concerned about the fact that she was unaware of it all. Following this conversation, Harry and Ron reached
the girl’s bathroom where they rescued her. If not for them ,Hermione would’ve been attacked and injured by the troll. And as shown in the movies, she didn’t advice them on what to do, she was
terrified and glued against a wall (no I am not calling her weak by stating this , don’t take me wrong).
‘I’ve just thought of something’ said Harry. He had gone white.
‘We’ve got to go see Hagrid now’
‘Why?’ panted Hermione.
‘Don’t you think it’s a bit odd,’ said Harry, scrambling up the grassy slope, ‘that what Hagrid wants more than anything else is a dragon egg, and a stranger turns up who just happens to have an egg in his pocket? How many people wander around with dragon eggs if it’s against wizard’s law? Lucky they found Hagrid, don’t you think? Why didn’t I see it before?’
This did not click in either Ron’s or Hermione’ head. It was Harry who
joined the dots and realized that whoever gave Hagrid the dragon egg, also tricked him into leaking confidential information and thus had a clear path to the stone. This realization is what eventually led them through the trapdoor and the adventures to follow. It also shows that Hermione isn’t the only one in the trio who uses brains.
‘’Harry had a sudden idea.
‘Peeves,’ he said, in a hoarse whisper, ‘the Bloody Baron has his own
reasons for being invisible.’
Peeves almost fell out of the air in shock. He caught himself in time and hovered about a foot off the stairs.
‘So sorry , your bloodiness, Mr.Baron sir,’ he said greasily. ‘My mistake, my mistake – I didn’t see you – of course I didn’t, you’re invisible – forgive old Peevsie his little joke, sir.’
‘I have business here, Peeves,’ croaked Harry. ‘Stay away from this placetonight.’
‘I will sir, I most certainly will,’ said Peeves, rising up in the air again.
‘Hope your business goes well, Baron, I’ll not bother you’.
And he scooted off.
‘Brilliant, Harry!’ whispered Ron.
When the trio was making their way to the third floor corridor, Peeves proved to be a major obstacle and Harry conjured up a trick to get rid of him on spot. His impersonation of Bloody Baron was so on point, that even Peeves, a poltergeist who had been the witness to hundreds of students’ pranks , tricks and unruliness throughout the decades, was convinced and he fell for it. Thus, Harry helped the trio to get a step closer to the trapdoor.
’’All right.’ Ron gritted his teeth and stepped carefully over the dog’s
legs. He bent and pulled the ring of the trapdoor, which swung open.
‘What can you see?’ Hermione said anxiously.
‘Nothing – just black – there’s no way of climbing down, we’ll just have to drop.’
Harry, who was playing the flute, waved at Ron to get his attention and pointed at himself.’’
‘’Harry climbed over it and looked down through the trapdoor. There
was no sign of bottom. He lowered himself through the hole until he was hanging on by his fingertips. Then he looked up at Ron and said, ‘If anything happens to me, don’t follow. Go straight to the owlery and send Hedwig to Dumbledore, right?’
He had no idea what was at the bottom of the trapdoor, it was just solid dark. Being completely uncertain of what’s to come he let himself fall. Now that is fucking brave. If he hadn’t gone down first and let the other two know, they would’ve lingered at the mouth of the door for ages. And he was just 11 years old. Also he knew what actions should be taken if anything happened to him. His first thought was Dumbledore because he was concerned about his friends and didn’t want anything to happen to them. How does this fandom forget these things ?
’’Devil’s Snare, Devil’s Snare… What did Professor Sprout say? It likes the dark and the damp –‘
‘So light a fire!’ Harry choked.’’
Hermione was an extremely attentive and a capable witch, yes…but under pressure she tended to panicwhich caused her to forget what
was necessary to do at the moment (notto mention momentarily she forgot that she was a witch and Ron had to remind her that). It’s just one of her traits and it does not make her any less strong. But Harry tends to be more rational during times of crisis (remember how in
Malfoy Manor he remembered the shard of the two faced mirror and
asked for help from the other side when Hermione was being tortured and Ron was losing his shit (totally understandable) . He reminded Hermione to use fire, thus helping her out when she was pressurized by the whole situation.
’’These birds…they can’t be here just for decoration,’ said Hermione.
They watched the bird soaring overhead, glittering – glittering ?
‘They’re not birds!’ Harry said suddenly , ‘they’re keys!’ Winged keys – look carefully. So that must mean…’ he looked around the chamberwhile the other two squinted up at the flock of keys.’ ‘…Yes – look ! Broomsticks! We’ve got to catch the key to the door!’’
Do I even have to say who was the smartest and most observant here ? I mean…people should know if they remember this part or if they’ve read the passage above. Afterwards he was the one who spotted the right key and he was the one who caught it (not for nothing he was the youngest Seeker in a century). Thus leading the trio to the chessroom.
And we all know what happened after that. Even though it blinded him with pain he didn’t let go of Quirrel’s face (Quirrel's face burnt under his touch) and greatly weakened him before Dumbledore came to the rescue.
So conclusion is… Harry to was a crucial part of the whole ‘through the trapdoor’ mission. He contributed to the clearing of the path to the stone just as much as the other two.
‘ALL THREE OF THEM WOULD’VE DIED WITHOUT EACH OTHER' preach !
