On Sunday, November 30, high school and college students marched in downtown San José in response to a St. Louis grand jury refusing to indict a white police officer, Darren Wilson, in the killing of an unarmed African American teenager, Michael Brown, in Ferguson, Missouri. Representing the racial diversity of Silicon Valley, the young people asserted that "black lives matter." The vocal gathering of 80 students and community supporters marched around City Hall and downtown shops on Santa Clara Street and San Fernando Streets, then held a candlelight vigil in front of the Rotunda of City Hall. #blacklivesmatter #sanjose #youth
Today, the Bill of Rights Defense Committee, San Jose Peace and Justice Center, and School of the Americas Watch gathered for a vigil outside the San Jose Mercury News in honor of Gary Webb.Webb worked for the San Jose Mercury News when his stories broke in 1996. He exposed the CIA collusion with drug-trafficking rings linked to the brutal US-funded and trained Nicaraguan Contras. Government agencies looked the other way as cocaine and crack flooded U.S. streets in the 80s, ravaging mostly poor and black communities, which in turn was cited as the reason to militarize local police departments around the country. Instead of standing by his side when the truth was revealed his editors abandoned him, effectively ending Webb's career as a mainstream-media journalist.

Come out to show support for Rasmea Odeh, Associate Director of the Arab American Action Network, who was arrested last year for allegations based on a 20-year-old immigration application. This is another instance of the U.S's violation of civil rights for Arabs and Muslims who are critical of support for Israel's crimes against the Palestinian people.
