but the title works in so many relevant possible interpretations in english that i'm not surprised it was kept.

'mob' is also a crowd, usually a restless or angry one.

'mob psycho 100' could totally be a playful academic nickname for an intro crowd psychology course. and this series has so much to say about groupthink: the cult leader provoking hundreds of people to torture a single teenage boy. the speed at which an entire city falls under the spell of another cult. the easy susceptibility of otherwise 'rational' people. a phony psychic assuming that the entire watching public is in on the 'joke' with the purportedly possessed boy. his playing to that crowd instead of being honest, and the speed at which public opinion rips him apart. our protagonist is mostly immune to all this because he's just wired differently; it's presented as one of his strengths.

'psycho' is a derogatory word for someone who 'snaps' and causes inconvenience or actual harm. the protagonist sees himself this way and his growth involves learning to fear/hate himself less.

the '100' also refers to that on-screen emotional hit counter, or catastrophic countdown, or whatever you want to call it, that alerts viewers to the protagonist's mental state... since he himself is unaware of its intensity until he explodes.

and lastly, '100' can invoke '0 to 100', for describing a person or situation that escalates quickly.

Kind of hilarious to me how poorly the title "Mob Psycho 100" localized to English-speaking areas. To someone whose first language is English, it scans as:

Mob (Yakuza, Mafia)

Psycho (violent person with "crazy" behaviors)

Thus: a particularly violent member of organized crime.

But in Japanese it scans as:

Mob (background characters in crowd scenes in manga or anime)

Psycho (short for psychic)

Thus: a psychic who looks/acts like someone you'd never pick out of a crowd scene in a comic.

this is paint-on-glass animation. there is one woman in all of japan who is an expert in this technique, tokyo university of the arts grad miyo satou, and studio BONES approached her for mob psycho 100's ending sequences. all three of them.

her work shows up in almost every episode of the series, too.

this is so weird. does OP's weight not fluctuate? does OP not live in weather? do jeans and slacks count? i would actually count leggings, and i buy the thick ones made with decent fabric so they don't 'tear all the time'.

or do they just... hate pants? which is valid. i cannot relate, but i understand; i have fitting issues. but i love pants. i mean... i collect them. i have thai karen pants and japanese hakama and vintage navy sailor pants and pirate-stripe pants. i practically live in high-waisted skinny jeans.

6 pairs of pants would never be enough for me or anyone i know, regardless of gender.

this does not apply if you wear exclusively leggings. Those things tear all the time you need like a million on standby

buddhist imagery on the mob psycho 100 official soundtrack art

Because this is a merging of like 2 of my niche interests, and I was like oooo I can’t not talk about it

1.) Mob is displaying the hand mudras of both the Abhaya mudra– representing welcome, fearlessness, peace and protection from evil, and the Varada mudra– signifying welcome, benevolence and compassion. This is obviously speaking to the two of mob’s best traits- his endless compassion, and the good he sees in every person.

Mob is also standing on a lotus throne: a common motif in buddhist iconography to denote a person that has reached an enlightened state, akin to that of a bodhisattva. (the lotus throne has the most ties to green tara or guanyin the east asian bodhisattvas of compassion.)

2.) reigen is in the reclining buddha pose, referring to the pose taken by the buddha when he was nearing his death. I don’t think this is anyone trying to imply that reigen is/is going to die, but rather that he is an older person already “over it” spritually, or maybe even that reigen is wiser than he seems and is an elder figure to mob? More likely it was a fun pose and reigen’s apathetic expression twists the original meaning, as it looks like he’s just lounging.

Both of them are on top of a tortoise, which… I don’t really know what that means, honestly. Tortoises in general in japan are symbols of longevity, I guess?

3.) Dimple’s face is very similar to artistic depictions of both the sun and the buddha’s face, which also follows in line with his cult-leader persona he had in ep. 3, where his face has aspects of the buddha. (the earlobes.)

Again, I don’t think that means anything. Dimple’s just an asshole

kageyama kyoudai no kakushitsu (using the japanese name because that’s how they appear on the ost but it means kageyama brothers’ feud) is such a gorgeous song, and the way it progresses with each iteration of it is what really gets me. none of them sound like a song about a feud…because mob and ritsu’s relationship as brothers isn’t a feud at all, it’s a tragic misunderstanding. in the first version, kageyama kyoudai no kakushitsu mie nai kabi (kageyama brothers’ feud: invisible wall) is so melancholic, but there’s love there, too. there’s been this invisible wall between them for years, they don’t know each other as well as they could (not when this song first plays, at least). they love each other, but there’s that guilt on mob’s end and that fear on ritsu’s that’s kept them from truly connecting for years, and you can feel that here.

the next version that appears, kageyama kyoudai no kakushitsu shitto (kageyama brothers’ feud: jealousy) is even sadder. ritsu doesn’t know that he has no reason to be jealous. at this point in his character arc, he still thinks he needs powers for self-defense, and to awaken them, he does things that make him hate himself; actions that go against his nature as a person. the jealousy only hurts ritsu, and that’s audible in this song.

this third version, kageyama kyoudai no kakushitsu kyoudai no kizuna (kageyama brothers’ feud: bond between brothers), is the one that really melts me. this song is what love sounds like. the sadness in the previous two songs progressed into something beautiful and moving; it still sounds like the other two, because that “feud” was in their past, but now it’s something that adds another dimension to how much mob and ritsu love each other. the sadness is now hope and connection. now, ritsu’s powers aren’t for self-defense: they’re for supporting mob, who of course would do anything to protect ritsu. it’s so goddamn beautiful, i can’t listen to it without crying

kenji kawai really created a masterpiece with this ost. you don’t even have to watch the show to experience the full range of human emotions, this ost does it alone.

Reigen: Mob…. come a little closer.

Only after having cried and laughed through these experiences can you become a stronger, more resilient person. So as a kid, you shouldn’t be suppressing yourself like this.

Mob: But…. Reigen: Mob! Who do you think I am? I’m Reigen Arataka, I’m the most powerful psychic the world has ever known!

Reigen: …. It’s fine

I wouldn’t even break a sweat handling something so small. Don’t worry about it!

Mob starts to sniffle

B…Blood.. Wh..When I fell there was blood all over my leg. -Crying- It hurts….. It hurts so much… -Sobbing-

-Sobbing-… Master….-Sobbing- Reigen: ey…ey… you cry like a boy you know.

Reigen: Ah… We’re here. Mob we’re here. Mob?

Huh? He cried himself to sleep?

…….Well, I guess it can’t be helped. I’ll just bandage this for you while you’re asleep. Probably better that way.
