There's a new kid in town.
Tumblr media
This is it. The last official Rule of Three post. It feels like a surprise, I know. But don't fret, because this isn't goodbye. In fact, it's an exciting new chapter, because today marks the official launch of my new and improved blog, CuriousCitizen.com. You're going to love it even more than Ro3, and if you don't, then there's a 100% money back guarantee (100% of free that is ;)
Whether you just started reading Rule of Three, or have been following since I started in 2010, thank you. Thank you for your comments and your suggestions. Thank you for reading my random thoughts and musings. Thank you for inspiring me along the way.
I've learned a lot over the last 3 years and I thought it might be apropos to end Rule of Three with 3 lasting lessons, so here it goes.
Find a space where you can do what makes you happy. I started Rule of Three because I wanted a place to write about things that interested me, things that made me happy or curious or inspired. Some of us are lucky enough to have that in our work lives. Some of us need to cultivate it on our own. Wherever it is, find a place where you can do the things that bring you joy. A meditation corner of your home. A favourite latte stop on your way to work. A blog where you can explore your thoughts. Everyone needs their happy place.
Find your own voice.  It's okay to find inspiration from other sources. It's okay to admire, or identify with, someone's particular style, their way with words, or their point of view. But when all is said and done, you have to find your own voice, your own unique perspective to share with the world. Because there's no one out there quite like you, and your words and thoughts will resonate most when you're being authentic. Find your own voice and stay true to it.  (Incidentally, I think this one is a life project - I'm still working on it.)
Life is full of surprises. There have been times when I thought a post was going to cannonball into the digital universe with a tsunami-like force, and it only made a small splash. There have been other times when I wrote a post that I thought was a little bit of a reach, and people really loved it. Life is full of surprises. Not everything goes as planned, in fact, I find that most things don't. Be ready to roll with the punches and revel in the journey. Life is a crazy ride.
So that's it. Three years of learning in one final post.
I promise that Curious Citizen is going to make you just as happy, if not happier than Rule of Three has. I can't make you follow the new site, but I would be oh so thrilled if you'd click on through and give me a follow. It would really make my day and would also give you a direct stream to all the exciting new content that will be posted there. It will be a lot of what you've come to know and love from Rule of Three - life, style, travel, food, design - but in a more focused manner. Plus, everyone needs a facelift once in a while, but this one is way easier because there's no anaesthesia involved, or needles or scalpels, all good things. Where was I? Oh yes...
Once again, thank you for reading Rule of Three. I hope to see you on Curious Citizen where I promise to keep writing if you're happy to keep reading.
Besos! xox

You don't need supermodel genes to take a great picture (but it doesn't hurt). Check out tips from my interview with Toronto-based photographer Javier Lovera on The Kit and see how to pose like a pro.

Same Head, Different Day.
I'm in love with this post, titled Photographer's Girlfriend Leads Him Around the World.
vivid photography + spectacular and exotic settings + the most beautiful head of ginger curls I've ever seen.
Here are a few of my favourite shots. Check out the post to see the full lineup.

Happy Canada Day!
In my opinion, long weekends are a great excuse to pack a bag full of books and comfy clothes, get out of the city, put my feet up, and relax. Canada Day long weekend is no exception, but if I wasn't so lazy, I'd try my hand at this beautiful strawberry ombre cake from Minibaker.com. What a fabulous (and delicious) way to celebrate the nation. Happy Canada Day!

Candidly Nicole
Of all the people I follow on Twitter, I think my favourites are the ones who give me a good laugh whenever I see their tweets. News updates and information are valuable, but a good laugh in 140 characters? That’s impressive.
Nicole Richie (@nicolerichie) definitely tops my list of favourite tweeters. The style icon and mother of two has perfected the art of the wry, witty tweet with gems like,

Recently, Richie launched a new online series with AOL, based on her irreverent tweets. Called Candidly Nicole, the show runs 3-5 minute episodes, like this one where Richie enjoys some Father's Day quality time with her sister, her famous crooner dad, and a pair of garden shears. Hilarity ensues.

Exciting Things Are Coming
Tumblr media
Exciting things are happening behind the scenes at Rule of Three (and I’m not referring to Tumblr’s recent curveball of changing my blog theme). In a few weeks I’ll be unveiling a brand new blog - an evolution of Ro3 and a new source for my personal POV on lifestyle content. Stay tuned for the launch announcement. The big reveal is almost here.

Sealed With a Burberry Kiss
Tumblr media
How cute is this ecard from Burberry Kisses, a new digital collaboration between Burberry and Google? The site lets you capture and send your unique kiss to lovers and friends, anywhere in the world. When I put in Toronto, it even included a silhouette skyline of the city, complete with the CN Tower, in the animation. Pretty awesome. It may not come in the brand’s signature tartan, but it does let you choose from four Burberry lipstick shades, and best of all, it’s free!

This incredibly jarring display by World Vision Canada was set up in a storefront window on Queen Street recently. Promoting their #nochildforsale campaign, the window drew a crowd of people who couldn't help but stop and pay attention. Those are real children (rest assured, actors) sitting making clothes. Definitely thought-provoking and a reminder that the way we consume here at home, has implications around the globe.

Before You Hit Send.
Tumblr media
Those of you who know me will appreciate that today’s post hits pretty close to home for my raging Type A personality. I have been known, on more than one occasion, to insert bullet points into emails, use headers, even colour-code my message based on various category breaks, all in an effort to make my emails as easy-to-read as possible for the recipient. You might wonder why I don’t just start writing shorter emails, but that flies in the face of my rambling nature, so email hierarchy it is.
An infographic from Fast Company gave me even more food for thought about whether or not particular emails should be sent at all (like the YouTube clip from Eddie Murphy’s Delirious that I sent around earlier today to give some friends a hump day giggle – probably not).
Choose your own electronic mail adventure here and see if you’re contributing to today’s digital inbox overload (spoiler alert: you are, we all are). Then, if you’re feeling particularly inspired to do something about it, pop on over to The Email Charter over here and start becoming part of the solution.

Food Art
Tumblr media
We’re all familiar with food porn these days – the beautifully art-directed shots that populate some of our favourite food blogs. You know the kind I mean. Soft natural light. Distressed wooden tables. Antique silverware and perfectly smeared avocado. Sound familiar?
But have you ever pondered the artistic merit of ham, splattered with mustard? Or the geometry of a cross section of hard boiled eggs? Photographer Beth Galton has. In her Conceptual food series that includes four artistic approaches to food photography (Cut Food, The Series of Texture, Landscapes, and Idioms), Galton uses her lens to cast food in a new (and unexpected) light. Here are just a few of her shots. To see more, visit bethgalton.com

Video
Somewhat topically related to my post earlier this week on kindness is this 9-minute video, set to David Foster Wallace’s 2005 Kenyon College commencement speech. If you haven’t seen it, find 9 minutes in your day and take a look. You will be entertained. You will have new things to contemplate. You may even be inspired. And your spirit will most definitely be renewed, if only for 9 minutes. Enjoy.

Kindness doesn't cost much.
Tumblr media
$6.19. That's how much it cost me recently to buy 60 Timbits for a group of construction workers, working on my street, late on a Friday night. Their crane erection (and no, that's not a euphemism) had blocked off access to the street, causing major gridlock on a busy Friday night in the heart of downtown. Since I had nowhere pressing to be, I waited patiently until they could get me access to my driveway and then, to say thanks I brought them a box of Timbits. Were their lives forever changed? Probably not. But each one of them remarked how I was the first person that night that hadn't yelled at them or cursed at them, and they thanked me for my patience.
Now I've had my fair share of impatient nights. (And days too). Times when I've been in a crazy rush. Times when I’ve been too stressed out to notice anyone else around me. Those are the times when my OCS (Only Child Syndrome) is in full effect. I think I’m the only person in the world and that everyone is purposely trying to make my life difficult, from the supermarket cashier holding up the line with a price check, to the construction worker who’s blocked off the street.
But the thing is, they’re probably not trying to irritate me. They’re likely not thinking about me at all. They might just be so caught up in their own world and their own problems, that, like me, they’re not thinking of anyone but themself. And that’s really a basic problem these days, isn’t it? The fact that a lot of us are thinking so much about ourselves that we don’t stop to wonder if the supermarket cashier just found out her landlord is evicting her. Or if the construction worker just got dumped by his girlfriend.
I’m not suggesting that the world’s problems can be fixed with a box of Timbits, or that writing this blog post somehow means I’ll be immune to ever having a self-centred moment again, but I do think that small acts of thoughtfulness can have a big impact on our interactions with the people around us. Because instead of tearing through your day with a bitter taste at every sluggish encounter or slightly crowded queue, wouldn’t it be nicer to smile, take a deep breath, remember that you’re not the most important thing in the universe, and perhaps do something, however small, to help brighten someone else’s day? With or without a Timbit, it sure sounds like a sweet idea to me.

The Priest Has Landed in Queen West
Tumblr media

Mark your calendars! The new Burger’s Priest at Queen & Spadina officially opens tomorrow at 6pm. I’m at a loss because I have a natural aversion to lineups, but I really really really love a BP burger. What’s a girl to do?!? If BP is on your weekend to-do list, do me a solid and save me a spot in line.
The new Burger’s Priest is located at 463 Queen Street West. theburgerspriest.com

Sparkle and spice, and everything nice.
Do you like pie? Do you like pretty sparkly things? If your answer to both these questions is yes then you’ll love this jewelry story from Shopbop. In the feature, a tantalizing array of rings, necklaces, bangles, and bracelets are beautifully displayed on the headless torso of a pie-making domestic goddess (like a hipster Martha Stewart). I’m not sure what’s more drool-inducing, the jewelry, or the blueberry pie. Can I have both?

Tumblr Troubles
Apologies for the confusion! You may have noticed Rule of Three is looking a little different today. That's because Tumblr is keeping me on my toes and throwing a few obstacles in my way. Pay no mind, I'll keep posting and wrestling with Tumblr, and we'll just chalk it up to the Mercury retrograde, okay? :)
