Expanding on the 'slightly disturbing version' above... Aldia sought immortality in his search for a way beyond the curse and cycles. His keep is a smorgasbord of strange creatures, cages, and former scientists. Perhaps when Vengarl entered Drangleic and served under the King's army, he was once sent on an errand to the Keep. He goes in, and by the time he leaves how many months later, he's a head discarded in a damp, foggy forest. Just how far did Aldia go, what depth did he sink, to escape the curse?

Shifting for a moment on their feet, they looked over their shoulder, into the dense, whispering woods, laden with snow and unseen groaning things. It was not that they particularly wanted to continue along the worn path– indeed, they worried for their ability to navigate backwards, should the break in the weather not hold– but the sore need for replenishing food supplies urged them in the direction of venturing onward. 

One of their compatriots sneezed, another fussing over his comrade for a moment. Mire frowned. “I… Perhaps, y- you would think a- about it?” they tried. “We– We will be returning this way a- anyhow.”

“As you wish.” Though he still felt inclined against taking up their generous offer, he wouldn’t insult them by declining even a second thought on the matter. “I shall consider it anew. Now, you mustn’t tarry long in these woods, for your own safety. Do not concern yourself with me. I have survived these years enough with only my helm as protection.”
