ā€œAh! You bloody bastard, you know you donā€™t have to actually stab me, fuck!ā€ I hissed as his silver sword once again slashed at my skin, back to my human height we were training once again, this time with the knowledge of my ability. And I have to admit, he looked way too happy every time he got a particularly painful strike in.
ā€œDonā€™t be such a baby, you wanted to learn, didnā€™t you?ā€ He chuckled gleefully, mocking me.
ā€œYeah, well youā€™re not the one holding back a damned Giant inside of you every time you get slashed!ā€ I growled, growing a few inches involuntarily, my height continued to fluctuate as I focused on my breathing in an effort to remain at a human height.
Iā€™d regained my strength from the night before, but each time the silver cut through my skin was like being injected with a poison I had to fight to stop it from spreading through my body.
We had decided to stop in Armarand for a few days, deciding it was a good idea to get some more close combat practice in given my recent revelation and to prepare properly for the fight ahead of us. Ryder hadnā€™t stopped giving me shit about lying to him, but at least he hadnā€™t murdered me in my sleep, I reminded myself to be thankful for the little things.
ā€œMaybe you shouldnā€™t hold back, probably good for me to brush up on my skills fighting a ā€˜Giantā€™.ā€
My eyes bugged at that, I had been ready to shift in relief, having permission to stop holding back, that is until he suggested we fight at such vastly different statures to one another.
Heā€™d taken down shifters before, heā€™d told me so, and given his skill and reflexes with the sword the only reason Iā€™d been able to get my hands on him the other night was because Iā€™d taken him by surprise. I didnā€™t have that advantage on my side this time.
ā€œShifter.ā€ I clarified, still taken aback by his suggestion. ā€œAnd Iā€™m not sure thatā€™s a good idea.ā€
ā€œYou scared Hendrix?ā€ He taunted, flicking his silver sword in the air.
ā€œYes, as a matter of fact.ā€ I said astounded. ā€œIā€™ve never fought a hunter before, besides one of us is likely to get hurt.ā€ I reasoned.
He quirked an eyebrow at me. ā€œI can handle myself big guy, come on, show me what youā€™ve got.ā€
Sighing heavily, there was no way I could get him to change his mind once he had an idea set, Iā€™d tried and I was finding it harder and harder to say no to him, especially because I had lied to him. So instead of arguing, I focused on shifting, allowing my body to stretch out of its cramped space until I felt like I fit my own body once again.
I looked down at Ryder at my feet, heā€™d taken a few steps backwards rightfully so, giving me room to grow, smart move for a man who seemed to show no fear.
Staring down at him I was once again reminded of how small humans really were, it really wasnā€™t very often that I interacted with a human at this size, and I suppressed the sense of power I got from looming over him. The mere thought of using my size against him made me feel uncomfortable and somewhat excited all at the same time, I shook the feeling away and focused.
I blinked my eyes, taking on a defensive stance and noted that Ryder had disappeared.
One moment he was there and then the next it was like he had vanished; I brushed my hands roughly through the trees wondering if heā€™d climbed them in hopes of jumping me by surprise.
There were no screams of surprise or any indication that Iā€™d knocked him off, so I did a slow sweep of the area, being mindful of where I put my feet, though I doubted Ryder was being as mindful of causing injury. As if on cue the bastard emerged.
ā€œAhhhh!ā€ Ryder cried out from behind me, he dug his sword into my shoulder, and I yelled in pain, no doubt deafening my attacker. I brought my hand up to my shoulder hoping to get my fingers around the little shit, but he was fast. Using some kind of hook and rope he had managed to dangle himself in the center of my back, right out of my reach.
Thinking quickly, I stepped backward intending to push my back into a nearby tree and knock Ryder off that way. Though as I stepped backwards, I noted he had swung around on his rope, feet planted firmly on my abdomen and was now aiming his sword for my stomach. I leaned heavily on the trees behind me and went to grab Ryder before he could do some serious damage, but once again, he was quick.
He swung at my fingers causing them to retract reflexively and then spun himself around my wrists, I watched on in amazement at how fast he was able to move and how fearless he looked interacting with body parts that were so much larger and stronger than he was.
I flexed my wrists ready to snap the ropes when he gave me a little wink.
He then shot another rope up past my shoulder, I heard it whiz with speed past my ear before it was embedded into a tree behind me, pulling himself and my wrists up and over my head with speed. This caused me to lose my balance, I spun trying to catch myself, but of course my hands were tied, with nothing to break my fall, I braced myself as my face headed for the ground bellow.
I fell to the forest floor face first in the dirt and shrubbery with a loud and embarrassing thud that shook the earth around me, causing any animals and birds nearby to flee immediately.
To add insult to injury he landed heavily on my head, touching the tip of his blade down onto the soft part of my skull, though he didnā€™t push it through, the silver burned, and I knew if he wanted to, he could end my life right now.
I lay there, mouth full of mud and in complete amazement of him.
This man, a man the size of my finger had taken me down and rendered me helpless in about three moves. I was ten times the size that he was, ten times stronger and yet he fought me and won with a worrying amount of ease.
That sense of power Iā€™d felt over him a moment ago? Yeah, that was long gone. Never again would I underestimate a human, well never again would I underestimate this human.
He jumped down from my head, landing in the dirt before my eyes and smiling proudly at me, hands on his hips in triumph, the jerk seemed very happy with himself.
ā€œGods itā€™s been so long since I took down one of you guys, that was great, you okay big guy?ā€ He asked mockingly, I spat the mud from my mouth out at him and he chuckled.
ā€œCare to untie me?ā€ I asked flatly.
He laughed again and I marveled once more at how easily he climbed onto my shoulder and walked with confidence down the length of my spine to where my hands were tied against my back. This man had no fear, I was probably the most dangerous creature he would ever encounter, and he showed no fear.
Once my hands were free, I waited for him to climb down to the ground again before pushing myself up to sit before him, I brushed the dirt from my clothes and inspected the wound to my left shoulder. Only a small cut but the burn from the silver would take a while to heal.
ā€œThat wasā€¦amazing.ā€ I said, not hiding how thoroughly impressed I was, his cheeks took on a reddish hue and he shrugged.
ā€œItā€™s my job.ā€ He brushed it off as though it were nothing, it was definitely not nothing to me.
I stared down at him, seeing him in a whole new light, heā€™d seemed so gruff and stoic but now he practically glowed, he was truly in his element, doing what he loved, and no wonder he loved it. He was so incredibly and dangerously skilled at it.
As much as he tried, he couldnā€™t wipe the smile from his face and I couldnā€™t blame him, Iā€™d be just as happy with myself if I took down a being ten times larger than myself.
ā€œLetā€™s take a break, shall we?ā€ He suggested clearing his throat.
I closed my eyes and focused on shifting once more, down to an average human height and when I opened my eyes, I was looking up at Ryder who was holding out hand for me to help me up from my sitting position.
I accepted his offer gratefully, and now standing eye to eye with him once more I looked him over from a whole new perspective. It was so hard to make out facial features when you were so much larger, but it didnā€™t escape my notice that Ryder was exceptionally handsome.
His hazel eyes seemed to change hues nearly all the time and that fascinated me to no end, I wondered if my own blue eyes ever changed colour in that kind of way.
ā€œQuit staring at me like that.ā€ He groused. ā€œCome on, letā€™s go get a drink, I think weā€™ve earned it.ā€
I blinked and shook my thoughts away from my head, heā€™s going to think youā€™re a real freak now, good job Hendrix, you bloody idiot.
We sat down in the local tavern, it was only us and two other patrons at the bar, the other two men kept to themselves with their faces buried in their drinks.
ā€œYou said once, you didnā€™t have any family.ā€ Ryder said taking a swig of his whiskey.
The last twenty-four hours had been filled with questions about shifters, what triggers the shifting, what I need to do to shift on command, and Iā€™d happily answered them, seeing no point in lying to him anymore. Heā€™d not asked anything personal up until this point.
This statement, though it felt like a question, struck me in a different way, I hadnā€™t felt I was lying when I said I had no family, because the truth was that I didnā€™t, not anymore anyway.
ā€œI donā€™t.ā€ I reiterated.
ā€œYou also said you had to leave your family when you first turned.ā€ He continued to push; he knew heā€™d struck a chord.
ā€œI also said that I was cast out.ā€ I countered grumpily.
He held his hands up in surrender. ā€œHey, Iā€™m just trying to understand why you never went back, from what I can see, you ARE able to control your ability enough that you wouldnā€™t be putting anyone in danger.ā€
ā€œThatā€™s not the way theyā€™d see it.ā€ I muttered bitterly into my own drink.
ā€œHow can you be sure?ā€ He wasnā€™t going to let it go, why did he have to be this way? Couldnā€™t he just be happy with what he did know and take my word at face value. Why was he pushing so hard about this? It wasnā€™t like Iā€™d ever have the opportunity of seeing my family ever again anyway. His pushing seemed to have the intended effect because I slammed my drink down and glared at him.
ā€œBecause! It was my own family that wanted me beheaded!ā€ I snapped. ā€œThe mayor granted me pardon on the proviso that I never come back. It was my ā€˜familyā€™ that wanted me dead.ā€ I seethed; it wasnā€™t something I wanted to be reminded of, it definitely wasnā€™t something I wanted to have a light conversation about.
There was silence between us and then I felt his heavy hand grip my good shoulder.
ā€œIā€™m sorry Hendrix.ā€ He said earnestly and I melted. ā€œI only wondered if after all this is over that it might be a good thing to reconnect with your family again, I didnā€™t realize, and Iā€™m sorry for that.ā€
I glanced up at him, meeting his concerned gaze, only yesterday when heā€™d found out what I really was, heā€™d looked at me the same way my mother and father had the night I turned. The horror, the disgust, the anger.
Somehow Ryder wasnā€™t looking at me like that anymore, and it did make me wonder if my own familyā€™s view of me could change. But I still wasnā€™t about to go through the pain of finding out, just to be thrown away again.
His apology proved that I couldnā€™t stay mad at him though, and besides it wasnā€™t really him I was mad at anyway, Iā€™d been holding onto that anger for a long time. He had just found the button that unlocked it, that was all.
ā€œThanks.ā€ I said finally, to which he gave me a sympathetic smile and motioned for the bartender to pour us another round.
ā€œOh uh, I shouldnā€™t really have more than twoā€¦ā€ I awkwardly pushed the glass toward Ryder, I knew my limit. I could handle my alcohol just fine, but it became increasingly more difficult to hold my human form when Iā€™d had more than two drinks. Two drinks was safe.
ā€œI guess weā€™ll take a bottle to go then.ā€ Ryder said, handing the bartender some cash, grasping the almost full bottle of whiskey and heading for the door.
ā€œWhat?ā€ I asked, quickly standing and rushing to the door, I planted a hand on the handle holding it closed in front of him, demanding an explanation.
ā€œYouā€™re worried about endangering the people here, right? Youā€™re worried that if you have too much to drink, youā€™ll lose control? So, letā€™s go somewhere where you donā€™t have to worry about that, loosen up a bit.ā€
He pushed past me, and I stood there slack jawed for a moment before following.
ā€œIā€™m not just worried about the people here Ryder, Iā€™m worried about hurting you too!ā€ I exclaimed at his back; he kept up his pace heading for the clearing in the forest where we had been doing our training.
ā€œI can handle myself.ā€ He said simply and I fought hard for a way to argue that point but, seeing as he had literally beaten my gigantic ass to a pulp only hours before, I couldnā€™t think of a sound enough argument.
ā€œThatā€™s not the point.ā€ I grumbled, but he paid me no mind and instead got to work building a fire.
The fire I was grateful for, winter was only a few weeks away and the chill in the evenings were already creeping in. I was still dubious of him though and his intentions with bringing our drinks out here, it was like he wanted to keep on testing my limits, perhaps he did.
He sat down in the dirt and stoked the fire, he then turned and looked at me expectantly, patting the ground beside him. I sighed and prayed to the Gods to give me strength, because for some reason I seemed to have none when it came to this particular human.
He handed me the bottle and I took a long swig from it before handing it back to him. The whiskey warmed my throat and settled pleasantly in my stomach, taking the edge off of the stress of the last few days and the uncertainty that was awaiting us.
ā€œYou know, youā€™re not like any Gia- I mean shifter Iā€™ve ever met before.ā€ He said thoughtfully, I wondered if that was a compliment for a moment before I realized he probably hadnā€™t ever given any other shifter an opportunity to defend themselves let alone talk to them as though they were real people.
ā€œI donā€™t imagine youā€™ve ever given a shifter an opportunity to talk to you.ā€ I said somewhat defensively of my own kind.
ā€œYouā€™re probably right, Iā€™m not really sure what I can do to make that right, but I know Iā€™ll be more mindful around rumors of Giants in the future.ā€ He promised.
I nodded, I supposed that was all he could do, I watched as he stared into the fire, that familiar look of guilt and shame crossing his features, a feeling I knew well. Iā€™d done things I regretted, Iā€™d hurt people in the past sometimes by accident but a few times intentionally and you canā€™t ever take that back. I know how that weighs on a manā€™s shoulders.
ā€œSo, there was this one time.ā€ Ryder began, filling the silence.
ā€œI was hunting a werewolf. Now, they do normally travel in packs so this one had me curious as to why he was alone, but I suspected he might have been freshly turned. Anyway, a number of people in the neighboring village had been killed so I was employed to take up the job.ā€ Ryder spoke lightheartedly, clearly trying to change the mood.
I smirked ruefully seeing right through him and nodded along as he continued his story.
ā€œSo, what they thought had been a werewolf was actually just a homeless old man whoā€™d stumbled upon some funky mushrooms, heā€™d been eating them for days and hallucinating that a village full of dwarves were trying to kill him! He assured me the only people heā€™d killed were dwarves!ā€ He laughed and I decided I liked the sound, slapping his leg and wiping his eye he continued to chuckle at the memory.
ā€œSo, what did you do?ā€ I asked, smiling, and laughing quietly alongside him.
ā€œOnce I convinced the old man that I wasnā€™t an angel sent to destroy him for his sins, I took the mushrooms from him. I told the mayor about what I found but he didnā€™t believe me, just told the townsfolk to lock their doors at night. He was a real jerk that one.ā€ He laughed again. ā€œSo instead of hunting a werewolf I had a few days off doing mushrooms with a crazy old man, who turned out to be just lovely by the way.ā€
I burst out laughing, unable to help myself as I tried to picture the image that Ryder had painted. We both took another generous helping of whiskey and continued to share in our laughter.
ā€œWhat about you Hendrix? Got any stories to share?ā€ He looked at me hopefully.
ā€œUh.ā€ I chuckled nervously, thinking quickly. ā€œI mistook a mermaid for a fish once, her scream damn near left me deaf for a week, mind you I had literally been about to eat her.ā€
Ryder looked at me keeping his expression as straight as he could, but he couldnā€™t hold it for long before he broke out laughing again.
ā€œWhat! I was hungry! I thought Iā€™d found a big fish!ā€
He slapped me on the back then, his laughter growing louder as he struggled to keep his composure. His cheeks were flushed from the alcohol and laughing, and the warmth of the fire gave him a soft glow.
I fought back my own blush, watching him, he was so happy, I had made him happy, I couldnā€™t think of any time in the past where Iā€™d actually made someone happy let alone made them laugh.
My body tingled and I quickly shot up a few feet without warning, my legs brushing the fire. ā€œShit!ā€ I gasped, crawling backwards frantically on the ground, putting as much space as I could between myself and Ryder.
ā€œIā€™m sorry!ā€ I exclaimed, eyes closed, I didnā€™t want to see the fear, the rejection from him, not when I felt we were finally building a trust between each other.
Why did this need to happen at the worst possible time, my chest filled with shame and disgust with myself, so uncontrollable, so unpredictable, no matter how hard I tried, I would always be dangerous.
A tear escaped my eye and I felt it drift down my cheek as my body expanded again against my will. Stupid body! Why canā€™t you just do what your told for once!
I felt a small hand brush against my cheek, it wiped at the tear that had escaped and then rested on my jaw.
ā€œHey, youā€™re okay Hendrix, your safe.ā€ His voice was a whisper, but he had stayed.
I opened my eyes, I estimated I had grown about twenty feet, though that didnā€™t seem to deter Ryder, he stood before me his arms reaching up to hold my large stupid head with his smaller stronger ones.
ā€œI told you that you didnā€™t need to be afraid to shift, I know you wonā€™t hurt me, you need to trust yourself Hendrix.ā€
I took a shuddering breath; how could he be so calm about this? The tingling sensation wracked through my body again and though I tried I couldnā€™t hold it; I continued to expand and felt his hand grow smaller against my skin. As I grew, he stood beside my head, his hand never left my face as though trying to give me the strength to just let it all out.
Once Iā€™d reached my full height, I let out a sigh of relief before turning my head to look at him, my nose bumped into his chest and my cheeks burned with embarrassment as he stumbled backward.
ā€œWoah there big guy, at least take me out to dinner first.ā€ He joked, pushing his hands on my nose and raising his eyebrows playfully at me, I let out a small laugh which finally did make him take a step back, but that was probably more because of the breath Iā€™d let out which pushed him backwards.
ā€œYour breath smells of whiskey.ā€ He coughed and I cringed, finding no way to hide my embarrassment, he just smiled waving it off. ā€œGood thing I like whiskey.ā€

G/t Shifter story, the idea came from a prompt I read a while back by @maplesyrupandgt. Iā€™ve just come back to writing after recovering from an injury to my writing hand of all things, but Iā€™m back and posting short stories and prompts to get me back in the swing of things. This will be a Four Part Story so keep an eye out for more to come!

Part One - Here
Part Two
The rain beat down hard on my shoulders and I knew Iā€™d have to stop for the night, my eyes had caught sight of distant light coming from this direction and I had hoped to stumble across a small village in search for cheap accommodation. What I didnā€™t expect to find however was currently staring at my face menacingly, urging me to turn around and go back the way Iā€™d come.
A sign was posted a few yards from the small village, and it read:
ā€˜GIANTā€™S BEWAREā€™
And Another:
ā€˜GIANT SLAYERS WITHINā€™
The signs were large enough that any shifter would be able to read it in their Giant forms, what was unnecessary was the graphic image of a shifter having its head cut off by a human that was scrawled under the blocky letters above it.
ā€œCharmingā€ I said to myself.
It was known among shifters that most humans didnā€™t know that ā€˜Giantsā€™ as they called us, were not in fact Giantā€™s at all but a special kind of shape shifter that could grow into their large forms at will, or sometimes against their will. For that reason, I deemed it safe to enter, no one here would know what I was, Iā€™d just have to keep a low profile as always.
My boots trudged heavily through the muddy streets until I found a tavern, the sign out the front told me that there was availability inside, perfect. I pushed open the double wooden doors and was greeted with a waft of warm thick air filled with music, laughter and the smell of smoke and whiskey.
I inhaled deeply, soaking in the pleasant sensations, Iā€™d get a drink once Iā€™d secured a room for the night. I found a coat hanger near the entryway and placed my wet jacket onto it along with my fedora, feeling somewhat warmer and dryer I headed straight for the bar with my best panty dropping grin.
ā€œA straight whisky darlin if you donā€™t mind?ā€ I asked the young barmaid from behind the counter, she gave me a playful wink while pouring a fresh glass without even looking at it. She slid it across the polished counter to me and leaned over.
ā€œWhatā€™s a pretty face like you doing here?ā€ she asked, flicking her long black hair over her shoulder.
ā€œJust passing throughā€ I said casually. ā€œI was hoping I might find some accommodations hereabouts.ā€
ā€œWell, you need look no further, we have a few spare rooms tonight, just a single?ā€ She asked hopefully, she briefly glanced around to see if I had come in with anyone else.
ā€œYeah, just a single.ā€
She handed me a piece of parchment to sign, a guest log, I scribbled a fake name in as I usually did and handed it back to her along with a generous payment, she gave me a set of keys and then asked. ā€œWhere are you headed to?ā€
ā€œOh no where in particular, I enjoy exploring, Iā€™m a bit of a nomad.ā€ I shrugged, taking another heavy slog of my drink. ā€œMight head toward Lightening Ridge tomorrow.ā€ I said offhandedly.
The man beside me at the bar, scoffed, I hadnā€™t even noticed him sit down until now, the barmaid and I both looked at him curiously, waiting for an explanation.
ā€œYou havenā€™t heard the rumors?ā€ He asked, looking at us incredulously, his dark hair and darker complexion gave off a mysterious air in the already dim lighting of the tavern, his shaggy hair keeping his face in the shadows expertly.
ā€œThatā€™s Giant territory up that way.ā€ He explained, turning to address us properly.
ā€œIs that so?ā€ I asked, I hadnā€™t heard of any territory being claimed as ā€˜Giants Territoryā€™ ever, most of the time shifters mainly lived amongst humans. Of course, there were the rare kind who took advantage of their sheer strength and sought to harm and press their power over others.
One shifter in particular I could think of, weā€™d crossed paths a few times, I had actually been tracking him for a long time after hearing the first reports of a Giant terrorizing villages. Iā€™d found him about a year ago, warning him of others who were hunting him, I tried to get through to him with reason, but he wasnā€™t interested in hearing any of it, in fact he very nearly killed me.
Iā€™d kept my distance then but continued to track him for a short while until I lost his trail. It had been months since Iā€™d had any firm leads and I wondered if my instinct taking me this far East had finally paid off. Perhaps he had taken over Lightening Ridge claiming it to be his own.
ā€œWhat makes you think itā€™s Giant Territory?ā€ I pressed further.
The young man finished off his drink and indicated that he would like another.
ā€œIā€™ve been assigned to hunt a Giant living in that area, heā€™s set up camp there for a while now, many have gone in, but none have ever returned.ā€ he said forebodingly wiggling his fingers for emphasis.
I shivered but not because of the stupid theatrics the man was displaying, but because in all likelihood Blade was killing if not eating the men who had entered ā€˜Hisā€™ Territory and the thought turned my gut to ice.
ā€œPerhaps I could assist you.ā€ I said resolve set, I was sure this was the shifter Iā€™d been after, and I wasnā€™t going to let him get away again, especially knowing he was now murdering civilians.
The young man laughed loudly but I kept my expression neutral, and his laughter died down to a look of pure disbelief.
ā€œYouā€™re not joking? Are you?ā€ He asked and I shook my head, he gave a heavy sigh. ā€œLook I appreciate the offer, but I generally work alone, besides I donā€™t wanna get distracted looking after you when Iā€™m trying to slay the beast.ā€ He explained, all good points.
ā€œIā€™m a hunter as well.ā€ I lied. ā€œI actually know of the beast your after, been on his tail for months, I think I could prove useful.ā€
He gave me a skeptical look; I was sure he was going to turn me down again and then Iā€™d move to plan B which would be tailing this man in order to find Blade, but he held out a hand instead.
ā€œYou donā€™t get in my way.ā€ He said sternly. ā€œWhen we find the beast, itā€™s every man for himself, I wont risk my neck to save your ass if you do something stupid, you hear?ā€
I couldnā€™t help the smile edging onto my face, and I grasped his hand.
ā€œDeal.ā€ I said, so much for keeping a low profile.
ā€œThe names Ryder, Iā€™ll meet you down here an hour before sunrise.ā€ He said stiffly before rising from his chair, intending to head in for the night.
ā€œHendrix.ā€ I answered honestly. ā€œIā€™ll be here.ā€ He gave me a curt nod before heading up the stairs to the Tavernā€™s rooms.
ā€œBoy you do have a death wish.ā€ The barmaid was shaking her head whilst cleaning a glass. I gave her a small shrug before heading up the stairs myself, and I wondered if the barmaid had noted that the name I put on the guest log, was not the name Iā€™d given to Ryder. I supposed it didnā€™t matter, in all likely hood weā€™d leave before anyone else arose the next morning and Iā€™d never see her again.
With that I hunkered down onto the small cot within my room and urged my racing thoughts to quieten, though regardless of my efforts my excitement at having finally got a lead was too much to give me a good nightā€™s sleep and morning came all too quickly.
I rolled out of bed and stretched my aching limbs, sleeping on a different surface every night didnā€™t bode well for my back. I wandered to the bathroom and splashed some water on my face briefly glancing my disheveled appearance in the mirror. Ryder had been right to worry that I wouldnā€™t be useful in a fight, where he was toned, I was more malnourished with my poor muscles trying desperately to make themselves known.
My dark blue eyes popped against my freckle-stained face where my cheek and jaw bones jutted out. I wasnā€™t much of a fighter, more a survivalist, but I had been training since my last meeting with Blade and I was confident Iā€™d be able to take him this time.
I brushed my fingers through my shoulder length sandy blonde hair and pushed away from the sink, Iā€™d guessed it was about an hour before sunrise now and if I didnā€™t get a move on, Ryder would likely leave without me. I slung my satchel containing my meager belongings across my chest and headed down the stairs.
ā€œAh there he is, I was thinking you might have come to your senses overnight.ā€ Ryder joked, putting on his own hat and jacket, ready to head out the door.
ā€œNot a chance.ā€ I smiled, and followed him outside, the air was fresh and held the sharp bite of winter closing in, I longed to be back inside the warm tavern, but I also wasnā€™t about to pass up this opportunity, especially if I could put an end to Bladeā€™s rampage once and for all.
It was bad enough that he was putting the identity of our kind at risk but using his power to harm others was something I just couldnā€™t stand for.
I followed Ryder as we headed further east, following signs for Lightening Ridge, it was approximately 200kml away from SheerWood, the village we had just come from, and would be about a three or four day walk with minimal stops.
ā€œSo, tell me a bit about yourself Hendrix.ā€ Ryder asked, the sun was beginning to rise, and we had walked in mostly comfortable silence until that point, I had gathered that he preferred not to grow attached to his travelling companion in case he died once we faced the shifter, his question caught me off guard.
ā€œThereā€™s not much to tell really.ā€ I shrugged, preparing to spin off the usual story I give people. ā€œIā€™m a nomad, I travel all over, got no family to hold me down so Iā€™m just out exploring really.ā€
ā€œBullshit, youā€™ve been tailing a Giant for peats sake, there is more to you than just drifting with the wind.ā€
I bit my lip, I hadnā€™t really thought that one through, Iā€™d forgotten that Iā€™d told him I was a hunter back in the tavern.
ā€œWell, you know I pick up a few hunting jobs here and there as a travel through, no big story, sorry to disappoint.ā€ I covered quickly, it wasnā€™t an unheard-of story and totally credible if I do say so myself.
He didnā€™t seem convinced, but he also didnā€™t seem frustrated at all, like he understood that not everything was okay to be shared with a total stranger.
ā€œWell, I suppose Iā€™m much the same as you, grew up in a small town and as soon as I was able, I up and left, took up hunting jobs and make my living that way, I must say itā€™s not a bad way to see the country.ā€ He glanced at the surrounding forest appreciatively.
ā€œDo you have any family?ā€ I asked trying to continue to keep the topic on him.
ā€œYeah, but I havenā€™t seen them in years, they live way out west in the desert, my mum, dad and sister, as far as I know Kailani is still there tending to the farm with them, farm life just wasnā€™t for me you know?ā€
I nodded, the lifestyle had never interested me either, come to think of it I wasnā€™t really sure what kind of lifestyle called to me. I supposed travelling and exploring the country was okay, but the thought of settling down somewhere was intriguing, even if it was an impossibility for me.
ā€œWhatā€™s Kailani like?ā€ I asked, my mind wandered to my own little sister, sheā€™d been only five years old when I left home, when my abilities had made themselves known.
ā€œSheā€™s kind.ā€ He said wistfully. ā€œShe was always very reserved, especially around our parents, she was never shy about giving me a hard time though.ā€ He chuckled at a memory playing over in his mind. ā€œLast I heard she was seeing a fella, sheā€™d make a good wife, I just hope sheā€™s happy.ā€
ā€œI suppose thatā€™s all any of us can ask for.ā€ I said quietly, hoping the same was true about Ella.
A twig snapped to our left and we both paused, Ryder held up a scarred hand indicating for me to keep quiet. I scanned the area, but I couldnā€™t see much of anything off the trail, the forest on either side of us was dense with underbrush.
After a few moments I was going to tap Ryder on the shoulder and suggest we keep going, it was probably just an animal skirting too close to the trails, thatā€™s when we heard a soft hiss disturb the silence around us. And that was all the warning we got before the large Arachnid made itself known, its many eyes flickering like embers in the dense forest and its large hairy legs moving faster than they should have been able to.
ā€œDuck!ā€ Ryder shouted, I was going to question why I would do such a thing, and to instead suggest we run but I crouched low to the ground anyway and narrowly missed a projectile of sticky silk that was shot toward us. Ryder had rolled out of the way and brandished his sword, crouching in a fighting stance and ready to leap at the thing.
I dug in my pockets for my dagger, and then realized it was woefully too small to fight a creature this large. Of course, normally when I encountered giant spiders in the forest, I was much bigger and would simply crush the creature with the heel of my boot, Iā€™d never thought I needed a larger weapon when I was usually the largest creature around.
Of course I couldnā€™t grow right now, not with a hunter standing right there, I rolled as the creature made a move toward me and I narrowly avoided one of its sharp claw-like legs from spearing me through the middle. I watched as Ryder pounced on top of the thing, using his sword to strike at the Arachnids thick exoskeleton.
The spider seemed to pay him not mind, not finding his efforts of any concern at all and instead kept on moving toward me, the spider positioned itself over me and spat more sticky silk covering my left hand and pinning it to the ground. My breath hitched and I felt myself expand a few inches, breaking my hand free of the sticky substance.
I focused on stopping the growing energy within my body, reining it in for now. I wasnā€™t about to die at the mercy of an insect.
The spidersā€™ pincers sliced awfully close to my neck, and I jerked my body upwards pushing the heels of my boots into the spiderā€™s face.
With only a second to make the most of my distraction I backpaddled on my hands and knees crawling under the spider and then out into the open. I dug in my bag frantically and pulled out what I hoped might do the trick, tearing off a part of my sleeve, I picked up a stick nearby and wrapped my shirt around it.
The spider had its eyes on me again and let out another hiss, I doused the cloth in whiskey and then struck a match, creating a large fire stick that I brandished at the spider. It threw its body backwards showing off its front legs in a display of aggression and in doing so threw Ryder from its back, he landed in a heap dropping his sword a short distance away from him.
With the flaming stick in one hand, I inched closer to Ryderā€™s sword, causing the spider to back up further.
ā€œRyder!ā€ I shouted kicking the sword toward him, he got the hint grasped the sword and then stood directly underneath the beast. I backed up and as the spider came down Ryder expertly placed the sword between the spiderā€™s thorax and abdomen and then it went limp, its body falling heavily on top of Ryder.
I concentrated and allowed myself to grow only a little, just enough so that I would be strong enough to push the beast off of Ryder, with a grunt of effort I rolled the spider off of him. Ryder lay there breathing heavily, his whole body covered in unidentifiable spider guck, I focused on my own breathing shrinking down to an acceptable height though my body protested.
ā€œYou look like hell.ā€ I stated, holding out a hand for him. He grasped it with a slimy hand of his own and I cringed a little at the sickening feeling.
ā€œIā€™d look a lot worse if it hadnā€™t of been for you.ā€ He said completely awe struck, he walked over to reclaim his sword from the spiderā€™s belly and then looked over at me, his hazel eyes flashing.
ā€œThat was some quick thinking back there.ā€ He said, voice still laced with amazement. ā€œI mean, after seeing you brandish a dagger of all things, I had my doubts, butā€¦ that was something else.ā€
I brushed it off, throwing the fire stick on the ground and stamping it out before putting my matches and flask back into my satchel.
ā€œI work well under pressure.ā€ I shrugged, and his eyebrows reached the sky.
ā€œIā€™ll say.ā€ He said clapping me on the back. ā€œIn any case, well done lad.ā€
I chuckled nervously and followed him as we continued down the trail. Thankful that I had made it out of my first encounter with an aggressive creature and lived to tell the tale, secret still intact.
ā€œHa, thatā€™s funnyā€¦ā€ He started, looking me up and down as I caught up walking briskly beside him.
ā€œWhatā€™s funny? That Iā€™ve only got a dagger to defend myself with? Yeah I know the truth is I lost-ā€œ
ā€œNo, not that.ā€ He cut me off. ā€œI just could have sworn I was taller than you.ā€

The fluff! My heart didn't know it needed that right now! So cute and I'm so interested in reading more about these characters!
Little Pinebed: Trouble Sleeping
Sam quietly approached the closed door to Isaac's room. He sat down and crossed his legs. Leaning back against to door, he closed his eyes and focused. He imagined a hand larger than his body reaching down towards him. He imagined it scooping him up, fingers curling around him as he's gently held in a warm embrace.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā He knew he had successfully shrunk when he only felt his shoulders touching the door. He got on his belly and crawled through the gap under the door. A single light illuminated the room, which came from the laptop sitting on Isaac's desk, partially blocked by the looming silhouette of its owner. Looks like he's still studying. Sam concluded. Does he ever sleep?
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Sam began the trek towards his friend. He knew it would take a bit to reach Isaac at his ā€˜tiny heightā€™ of eight centimeters tall, but it would allow him to reach his friend without being noticed and interrupting his class. As he got closer, he noticed how the light illuminated his face and made his dyed, red hair stand out like a glowing beacon in the darkness of the room.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Halfway into the room Sam tripped, his body hitting the ground with a quiet thump. He quickly looked up, hoping the yelp that he made in surprise wasn't loud enough for his giant friend to notice. After a few, tense moments with no response, he stood up. Looking behind, he barely made out the vine that snaked down from a plant pot sitting against the wall. Isaac really needs to trim his plants.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā The rest of the trek went rather smoothly, and Sam was able to make it to Isaac's desk without being spotted. The L-shaped desk was positioned in the corner of the room. Sam followed the wall to the right until he reached the built-in ladder made out of half-punched staples between the wall and desk. The climb up was both shorter and easier than the walk there. Soon as he reached the top Sam ducked behind a stack of botany textbooks that usually sat on this side of the desk. Peeking out gave him a better view of the giant.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Isaac leaned on his hand, hunched over his laptop. The light coming from the screen that illuminated his face was partially reflected in his glasses in a way that reminded Sam of a projector from his old school back when he was a kid. He could see the giant was looking at from this angle. A diagram of two plants Sam couldn't recognize. It pictured cutting off the tops of the plants and matching one plant's top with the other. The title read ā€œGrafting and You: Getting the best of both plants.ā€ Isaac scrolled down, showing a new picture of the plant fully grown, with what looked like a tomato plant above, with potatoes under the soil. Sam didn't know how much time had passed since he got to the top, but if he remembered the numbers right he must have been reading along for likeā€¦ ten pages? It was enough for him to realize how cold he had gotten.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā At his small size, Sam got cold really easily. Even Will, who was naturally tiny, was surprised with how poorly Sam retained heat. I must have been cold for a while thenā€¦ I hate how I can't notice I'm freezing to death half the time. He stood up, and waited for Isaac to turn to the left and reach for his drink. Sam knew he couldn't jump straight into the giant's hood, Isaac would feel him and they'd be caught, so they aimed for the back of his chair when they leaped, smacking into it with a quiet thump. Gripping the sides, Sam's body went rigid as he waited to see if Isaac had noticed. They made the mistake of looking down, remembering the fall they had when they first met Will, and the two swapped sizes. Sam had fallen off the kitchen counter then, leaving his whole back bruised for a few painful days. This was at least a foot higher than that drop.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Hearing the music leaking through the giant's headphones, along with the distinct lack of a giant grabby hand, Sam crawled into their friend's hood. He was immediately met withĀ  a pleasant warmth as he slid into the bottom of the pouch. He leaned into the source of the heat, the shape of the hood enabling him to curl up against the wall of fabric. This is Isaac's backā€¦ It was only a couple weeks since he first met Will, and discovered he could trade sizes with tiny people, and shrink himself to a specific size. He could still find wonder in how vast everyday objects could feel when he shifted. I mean, he fit in his friend's hoodie for crying out loud! It felt so strange, so magical, so right. He had never felt more himself than when he could fit in a person's hand. This feeling was only compounded with the fact that Will perfectly mirrored him in that way, being a tiny person who wanted to be ā€˜human-sized.ā€™
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Sam gently swayed as the giant continued his study. Occasionally leaning into the chair, gently squishing Sam into his back. Tiny people were surprisingly durable in that way. It was difficult to hurt someone without actively trying, which made what Sam was doing only mildly risky. He could still get hurt if Isaac happened to move too quickly, or put too much weight on the little guy he didn't know was in his hood.Ā Thinking on it, it was pretty risky. I'm too comfy now, though. Sam thought. What seemed like an hour passed until Sam felt a considerable amount of movement, and a booming voice sounded out.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ā€œAlright. I think that's enough for tonight.ā€ Isaac declared before letting out a groan that sounded like a deep rumble to the tiny in his hood. Sam could make out giant's arms above him through the top of the hood as Isaac stretched, the simple action lifting him a few inches, along with the hood. They began to sway as Isaac made his way to his bed, almost collapsing onto it before Sam could react. They were thrown back before a heavy weight fell onto his chest and pinned him to the mattress. He gave out a loud yelp of pain in response.
Ā Ā Ā Ā ā€œShit!ā€ Isaac bolted upright, unknowingly tossing Sam around in his hood. Turning back, he didn't see anyone on the bed. ā€œSam? Will?ā€ Sam could hear the urgency in his voice as Isaac quietly called out. ā€œWhere are you? Are you alright?ā€
ā€œI'm in your hood.ā€ Sam managed to call out. They felt the world shake again, along with the sound of a ziiip, as the giant slowly removed his hoodie and turned it around. Sam felt the hand before he saw it, as he's gently lifted out and brought to a billboard-sized face.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ā€œAre you alright?ā€ Sam could feel the concern they saw on Isaac's face in that moment. They nodded, watching Isaac's face soften as he let out a large sigh of relief. ā€œThat's good, that's good." Isaac was still concerned. "I am so, so sorry I didn't notice you.ā€
Isaac dropped his hoodie off the side of his bed and laid down. He placed the tiny on his chest, and gently rested his hand on them. Sam immediately curled up, pressing his back against their friend's curled up fingers. It was silent for a few moments, and Sam was left listening to the ambient sound's that came from Isaac, that only the tiny friend on his chest could hear in the moment. He focused on the rhythmic beating of his heart, but also made out the gentle breathing that came from above him. The near-silence was eventually broken with a question.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ā€œTrouble sleeping?ā€ Sam looked up towards Isaac's face, and nodded. ā€œYou could've asked me,ā€ Isaac responded, ā€œI would have let you sleep here.ā€ His tone wasn't accusatory, but Sam looked away shyly and muttered, ā€œDidn't want to bother youā€¦ā€ they braced for it, knowing how Isaac would respond.
ā€œSam,ā€ They still winced. ā€œYou could never bother me.ā€ Isaac's tone was a little more direct, but his gaze quickly softened as he continued, ā€œYou're family to me. You know that, right? I care about you, Sam.ā€Ā  Sam nodded, and couldn't help but smile as well. ā€œWe're both tired, so we can talk about this more tomorrow if you'd like.ā€ Sam nodded. ā€œGoodnight, Sam.ā€
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā The next morning, Sam found himself in a tangle of limbs. He opened his eyes to a familiar black hoodie, and glanced up at Will's sleeping face. They must have had trouble sleeping as well. Their arms were wrapped around Sam's chest, while both of their legs were tangled together. I don't know how I forget how clingy they areā€¦ Sam looked towards Isaac's face, and saw he was looking to the side, angling his phone away from the two tiny folk laying on his chest. Isaac glanced in his direction, and said a quiet ā€œGood morning!ā€ he smiled, causing Sam to do the same. ā€œYou two are really tangled,ā€ He laughed under his breath. ā€œWant me to wake them up for you?ā€ Sam shook his head ā€œNo, thanks.ā€
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ā€œIs that a no because you're good, or because you don't want to bother them?ā€ ā€¦Sam looked away. Isaac seemed to think for a moment. ā€œAlright. I gotta get up in an hour for work anyway, so you don't have to decide if you don't want to.ā€ That was one of the things Sam liked that about Isaac. He doesn't force Sam to speak, or make a decision if they were having trouble, and was endlessly patient with them. Sam reached out to hug Will, who seemed to squeeze Sam a little tighter than before. Sam winced at the sudden pressure on his aching ribs, but the pain subsided as he pressed his head into their chest.
ā€œIsaacā€¦ā€ Sam muttered, ā€œI can't get back to sleep. Could you-ā€ He already felt Isaac's thumb as it begin to gently rub his back. Sam was asleep the moment he closed his eyes, a smile on his face.

Part Two
Weā€™d been walking for near on two days now, thankfully Ryder hadnā€™t questioned my height again and Iā€™d managed to keep that part more or less under control. We also hadnā€™t come across any more giant arachnids, but we were approaching the last village before reaching Lightning Ridge, or at least thatā€™s what Ryder had said near on two hours ago!
ā€œAre we there yet?ā€ I asked for the hundredth time, my legs were killing me, it wasnā€™t often that I had to cover this much ground while holding my human form.
ā€œYouā€™re like a whining child, I told you we were nearly there didnā€™t I?ā€ He growled.
I sighed, falling behind him and stretching my aching muscles, Iā€™d never stayed in my human form for longer than a day and I was starting to feelā€¦cramped.
ā€œItā€™s hard to believe youā€™ve travelled all around the county on foot with all this complaining, honestly.ā€ He scoffed and I glared at his back.
ā€˜Yeah well, youā€™re not the one trapped inside a body too small for youā€™ I hissed in my head. Normally this sort of walking would be fine, Iā€™d usually be ten times this size, covering more ground faster than he could ever imagine and Iā€™d be able to stretch out whenever I needed to. The concentration and energy it took for me to remain this size was becoming increasingly more difficult and exhausting.
The sooner we got to the village, the sooner I could make an excuse to explore on my own without his watchful eye and stretch myself out for a few hours.
ā€œI donā€™t normally cover so much ground in a day.ā€ I admit. ā€œI take my time and rest when I feel like it.ā€ I explained, he just scoffed again.
ā€œWhen we get to town, weā€™ll find a smithy and see if we canā€™t get you a new sword seeing as you lost your old one.ā€ He turned his head and gave me a calculating look, I looked away nervously.
ā€œI hadnā€™t expected to need one so soon.ā€ I said defensively.
We got to a rise in the trail and I noticed the forest around us start to become less dense and more spread out, as we got to the peak we were looking down onto a town.
ā€œThank the Gods.ā€ I sighed, Ryder merely grunted in response and kept on going at his usual pace, I wanted to sprint down the incline.
From atop the rise the village had looked like a fairly large one, with many houses and streets, a few larger buildings made for holding many people but when we entered city limits there was scarcely a soul around.
ā€œNot good.ā€ Ryder muttered, he headed down a street, following a sign that read ā€˜Armarand Smithyā€™ and pushed the door open, ignoring the ā€˜closedā€™ notice plastered onto the window.
A small bell announced our arrival, and though the notice had said the place was closed, the workstations were hot and fresh working materials and metal projects lay littering the benches.
ā€œSorry folks, weā€™re closed.ā€ Came a gruff voice, I glanced around and spotted a burly man sitting at a forge, spinning a large rod of iron within it.
ā€œWeā€™re hoping to purchase a sword, preferably a longsword made of silver.ā€ Ryder said ignoring the man and looking around the blacksmiths wears to see if he could spot what he was looking for.
I shivered, silver was a weakness to shifters, and I wondered if Iā€™d even be able to wield a sword made of the wretched stuff. Perhaps if the hilt was made of leather it would work, but Iā€™ve never tested the theory.
ā€œFresh out of silver, I do have a few iron long swordsā€¦you looking to take down the beast?ā€ He glanced up from his workstation, eyeing us carefully.
I tried not to sigh in relief too obviously, iron would be fine, Iā€™d face the dilemma of not actually knowing how to wield a sword later. Ryder nodded and the man shook his head in disbelief.
ā€œYouā€™ll need more than a sword, good luck gentlemen.ā€ He stood, his large body towering half a foot taller than us, he picked up a long sword off of the bench next to us and held it out. ā€œTake it, you need it more than I do.ā€
Ryder took the sword giving it a thorough inspection before nodding in approval and digging for his coin purse.
ā€œNot necessary, many have tried and failed to do what you set out to do, take this and Iā€™ll pray for your souls.ā€ He turned away, sitting back at the forge, getting on with his projects as though no exchange had been made at all. I shared a look with Ryder and after expressing our gratitude we headed back out into the street.
ā€œYou think theā€¦ Giant, has cleared out this town?ā€ I asked, Ryder only grunted in response, he seemed to be deep in thought as he headed toward the Inn.
We secured two rooms for the night, the Innkeeper told us, that many men had tried to slay the beast, but none had returned thus far, with frequent raids on the village, the other townsfolk had all fled town or moved away, leaving a desolate shell of a village behind. He also wished us luck and told us heā€™d pray for our souls upon hearing our intentions.
ā€œWell, Iā€™m gonna go for a walk, donā€™t wait up, weā€™ll need a good nightā€™s rest before we head into Lightning Ridge tomorrow.ā€ I said offhandedly, hoping Ryder was planning on staying in his room for the evening and getting an early nightā€™s sleep, while I could take the opportunity to stretch out. Iā€™d need to regain my strength if we were to take down Blade.
ā€œExcellent idea, letā€™s head out back and see how well you do with a sword.ā€ Ryder smiled, pulling out the iron sword and handing it to me, I couldnā€™t hide my deflation, a training session with Ryder sounded exhausting and the Giant within me cried wishing to be let go.
Following Ryder, we found a clearing in the nearby forest, right on the edge of town to the west.
ā€œIs this really safe to do, when we are so close to the Giantā€™s dwelling?ā€ I asked holding my sword with both hands and mimicking Ryderā€™s fighting stance, a nervous sweat building on my forehead.
ā€œIf the brute chooses to attack us now then so be it, better to get it over with, besides I need to know what sort of fighter you are, now, show me what youā€™ve got.ā€ He took on a defensive stance and I had no choice but to swing my sword, aiming for his chest, he easily deflected my attack and with an embarrassing amount of ease, he disarmed me, my sword clattering to the forest floor uselessly and his sword nicking my shoulder.
Where his silver sword had cut along my skin it burned and I covered the wound with my hand, hiding the obvious reaction I was having to the silver. Bad idea, this was a very bad idea, my body shook with the effort to remain human, I closed my eyes taking a breath and reaching for my sword again.
ā€œYour stance is all wrong, and your eyes are stuck on my sword where they should be looking at my feet and at my eyes, you can always see you opponents next move that way.ā€ He explained.
ā€œActually, Iā€™m uh not feeling great, I might just turn in for the night, big day tomorrow and all.ā€ I fumbled for an excuse to leave now before my identity was revealed, one more slash of his sword and I was sure to be discovered.
He blocked my path. ā€œNo.ā€
ā€œWe need to get this down now if you want to have any chance of surviving against the Giant.ā€ He took on a fighting stance again, and I steeled myself, there would be no getting out of this.
This time with my life at stake, my swings were heavier, though Ryder continued to block my attacks, he didnā€™t disarm me this time and I kept a firm hold of my sword. My eyes darted between his feet and his eyes and I was able to predict a few of his movements but as he switched from defense to offensive maneuvers I found it increasingly difficult to predict his swings and defend myself accordingly, but I did, at least for a little while.
Feeling proud of lasting longer than thirty seconds this time, I used that confidence to counterattack. His body moved with the gracefulness of a cat as he avoided my strike to his ribs and thrust his sword at my neck, using a boot to knock me to the ground and knocking the air from my lungs.
My heart rate skyrocketed, looking into his fierce eyes, the sharpness of the many different hues of green and brown reflective and flashing in the evening sun, his sword dug into my neck. The wound sizzling and his gaze remained stern watching with suspicion.
ā€œWhat are you?ā€ He growled, I put my hands above my head in surrender and dropped my sword, but it was too late. My heart rate increased, and that cramped feeling in my bones only became worse until I could no longer hold it back anymore.
My body began to expand underneath him, knocking him off his feet as he scrambled off of my chest and backed further away into the forest, watching on in horror. I got to my feet, not wanting my neck to be anywhere near him as I continued to stretch up into the sky, my shoulders just reaching the tops of the immense pine trees surrounding us when I reached my full height of about sixty feet.
It felt amazing, like a really good back crack after a rough nights sleep, only ten times more relieving and the feeling spread all over me. I suppressed the urge to stretch my arms out completely and instead braced myself for the onslaught that was bound to come from the hunter at my feet.
Looking down at him felt strange, having spent the last few days seeing him from my human height, it felt wrong to see him so small, I kept my hands above my head in a sign of surrender as I crouched before him. ā€œI can explain.ā€ I said, keeping my voice low and being aware of how much louder I could be at this size.
ā€œY-youā€¦ youā€™re a-ā€œ He stuttered unable to finish his sentence, I filled in the blanks for him.
ā€œIā€™m a shifter.ā€ I said carefully. ā€œAnd I mean you no harm, my intention is as it always has been, to slay the monster in these woods.ā€
His breathing became heavy as rage consumed him.
ā€œYou are the monster!ā€ He shouted. ā€œYou are the one Iā€™ve been tracking all along! And youā€™ve been hiding right under my nose!ā€ I flinched at his words, I should have been expecting that, of course heā€™d think I was the shifter he was after; itā€™d make sense to hide in plain sight.
He gave a war cry and lunged for my ankles. ā€œOoop!ā€ I shuffled my feet away and then wrapped my fingers around his body, I pinched his sword between my finger and thumb wincing as the silver burned my flesh before flinging it into the nearby shrubbery.
With his hands free of a weapon, I held him before my face, his legs kicked at my fingers and his hands scratched furiously at my skin, but I didnā€™t relent my grip, it hurt my heart not to trust him enough to let him go.
He needed to cool off first.
ā€œRyder please listen to me, I am not the one youā€™re after, I swear to you Iā€™ve never harmed a human soul in my lifeā€¦at least not intentionally.ā€ I added as an afterthought.
ā€œBullshit!ā€ He fumed. ā€œYouā€™ve been lying to me this whole time, what makes you think I should believe anything you have to say!ā€
I sighed heavily, sitting myself down on the forest floor, deciding whether or not to wait out his anger or to let him go and make a run for it myself. I landed on the idea that perhaps he would see reason if he heard my story, my real story, it was worth a try at any rate.
ā€œI was ten years old when I turned.ā€ I said quietly.
ā€œWhat?ā€
ā€œI didnā€™t have a choice, I was born this way, as all shifters are.ā€ I explained patiently, ignoring his confusion. Ā
ā€œI was deemed too dangerous to be around my family or my village anymore and I was cast away.ā€ I continued, watching him carefully as he began to lose the gusto in which he was scratching at me.
ā€œI became a nomad, spending a lot of my time in hiding and gaining control over my ability to shift. Once Iā€™d gained that control I re-entered society, living among humans for the most part.ā€ He glared at me then.
ā€œHowever, I began to hear stories of a Giant who would raid villages, killing innocent people.ā€ I loosened my grip on Ryder somewhat, wanting to appear as less of a monster in his eyes and praying to whatever Gods there might be, for him to listen to what I was saying.
ā€œIt was rare for me to come across other shifters, and the ones I did find, preferred to remain on their own and in hiding, like I had been doing. Staying out of trouble and living their lives in peace. But Bladeā€¦ā€ I shook my head, still astounded to this day.
ā€œWhen I found him, he was consumed with a hunger Iā€™d never seen before and told me fantastical stories about how wonderful it felt to crush a living soul in his hands.ā€ I flinched inwardly, realizing I wasnā€™t making the man currently in my grasp feel any more comfortable than he had felt before, I continued on anyway.
ā€œWhen I expressed my disgust in his way of life, he attacked me, he left me there within an inch of my life, it took me weeks to recover but when I did, I vowed to myself that I would put a stop to him. That no more innocents would die at his hands.ā€
I met his eyes then, holding them in my gaze. ā€œPlease believe me Ryder, please help me to kill him.ā€
He remained quiet for some time, his face void of all emotion and stony as he thought over everything I had said.
ā€œWill you release me?ā€ He asked so quietly I almost didnā€™t hear him. ā€œOf course.ā€ I said and probably a little too quickly I lowered him to the ground and released my grip from him, watching him clumsily regain his footing.
ā€œI suppose it all makes sense nowā€ He mumbled.
ā€œWhy you travelled with only a dagger, why you seemed a little taller occasionally and why you had the strength to move the spiderā€™s body off of me.ā€ He began to pace the forest floor in front of me, one time almost running into my boot before he stared at it in disbelief and gave it a wide berth.
I remained quiet, letting him take in all the information I had just dumped on him, all the while keeping my hands firmly in my lap and trying to appear as un-intimidating as I could at this size.
ā€œHow do I know youā€™re not just trying to lure me into a false sense of security?ā€ He mumbled, more to himself than to me, but I answered anyway.
ā€œIf I had wanted to kill you, donā€™t you think I would have done it by now? Why would I have saved you from the spider when I very well could have squished the spider and been done with you.ā€ My answer came out harsher than intended, he looked up at me calculating whether or not I was telling the truth.
ā€œIs your name even Hendrix?ā€ He asked accusing.
ā€œIt is actually yeah, normally I give a fake name though I donā€™t know why I didnā€™t with you.ā€ I petered off in thought, I had never in my life given my real name to anyone, even when crossing paths with other shifters.
ā€œCan you like shrink back down or something, I canā€™t talk to you when youā€™re the size of a fucking building.ā€ He growled, rubbing his sore neck from craning to look up at me.
I chuckled nervously. ā€œNot for a little while Iā€™m sorry.ā€
ā€œI thought you said you had control of thisā€¦ā€™abilityā€™.ā€ He said gesturing to my form up and down.
ā€œWell, I do.ā€ I insisted. ā€œItā€™s difficult to explain but this is my natural form, holding my human size is actually quite exhausting, especially when I have to hold it in for a long time, two days is my new record.ā€ I said smiling, when he didnā€™t match my elation, I deflated again. ā€œSo um it will take a little bit for me to regain enough energy to uh ā€˜shrinkā€™ back down again.ā€ I mumbled.
ā€œI see.ā€ He said thoughtfully.
As slowly as I could manage, I maneuvered my body so that I was laying on my stomach with my head resting on my arms in front of me, that way we could talk on a more equal level, and he wouldnā€™t have to strain himself.
He watched me the entire time I was moving, backing up a few steps to give me space and keeping his balance as my body vibrated the floor beneath him. It was an uncomfortable feeling, knowing a small movement on my part had such a huge impact on humans.
ā€œThank you.ā€ He said slowly, almost as though it were a question, he still seemed awfully wary of me, but the murderous rage seemed to have left him for now.
ā€œSo ah, now that the cats out of the bag, we should talk game plan on how to take Blade down, yeah?ā€ I suggested hopefully.
He crossed his arms over his chest. His shaggy dark brown hair moved with the breeze my breaths caused and I couldnā€™t help but find him somewhat adorable at this size, though Iā€™d never say that out loud to him, that was a sure-fire way of getting my head chopped off.
ā€œDoes everything that you have on your person grow with you?ā€ He asked.
ā€œOh, um yeah, my bag, clothes, everything that I have on my person at the time of the change, itā€™s kind of a package deal, and one Iā€™m grateful for otherwise Iā€™d go through a hell of a lot of clothes.ā€ I rambled with a nervous chuckle.
ā€œShut up.ā€ He said sternly and then met my eyes with a mischievous smile that finally reached his eyes as something seemed to click within his mind.
ā€œI have an idea.ā€

Lightning Ridge - Part One
A young Shifter wanders into a town crawling with hunters, Hendrix plans on laying low but when he catches wind of one particular hunter who is after the same Shifter that heā€™s been tracking himself, his curiosity gets the better of him. Offering to join the man on his quest he can only hope he can track down the dangerous shifter, saving the lives of innocents all the while keeping his secret hidden.
TW: mentions of murder/eating people, giant spiders, some swearing, mentions of death, mentions of drug use

A Merman/Fairy Romance - oneshot
Finley is a freshly recruited scout Fairy and prays for his days of flying round in circles to bring him something more exciting to report back with. Careful what you wish for Fin.
This story contains some swearing, some ogling at giant mermen and some angst. Enjoy! Approx 3000 words
Only one hour into my shift and I already wished for my day to be over, Iā€™d been offered the job only a week ago and had been so proud that I was even considered to be a scout and now I longed for an occupation that was more exciting. My patience has always been very low, and I had figured scouts saw more action, than anyone else in the village, which I why I applied in the first place.
What I hadnā€™t accounted for was hours of flying back and forth with nothing to do. It wasnā€™t often that a human or any other creature breached our borders, and the glamour kept them away anyway, I sat on a low hanging branch and wondered why we even needed scouts anyway if we were so thoroughly protected that nothing could even get close to us. And then I heard it.
ā€œFuck!ā€
The voice was distant and had come from an easterly direction, outside our borders and towards the beach that skirted nearby. It wasnā€™t a place that was protected with magic and so it wasnā€™t often that fairies ventured toward the beach, we had a freshwater stream that ran through our village and that seemed to be enough for any Fae who craved the water.
However, the stream wasnā€™t enough for me, I had become pretty familiar with the beach lately, having nothing else to do and broadening my scouting circles wider in hopes of catching something exciting. We had all been told stories of Sirens and Merfolk and to steer clear of the ocean for that reason, but something about the salty air and a sunset on the horizon kept pulling me back.
With caution, my wings buzzed to life as I carefully flew in the direction of the beach, perhaps it was a human, perhaps it was a siren, whoever it was had piqued my curiosity and I had to know what their issue was.
As I flew closer, the trees became more spares and I found a safe branch, high out of reach and with a good vantage point of the shore. There I saw the most interesting thing I had probably ever seen.
There on the sand was a merman, his dark skin glistening with salt water, his dirty blonde hair was so knotted and so long it just about reached his tailbone. And his tail, immense as it was, flicked in agitation spreading the blood further through his aqua scales.
He growled in agitation, trying in vain to grip the fishhook that had lodged itself into the back of his tail, high enough that he wouldnā€™t be able to turn his tail to reach it and at an angle that his fingers simply couldnā€™t reach. Now I could very well sit and watch this creature struggle and I would laugh, but he would then also bleed out, and though the Fae and Merfolk were sworn enemies, I had no intention of watching someone die.
Sighing to myself I had to make a decision, it had been well over a century since the Fae of our village had even interacted with one of the merfolk, I never paid much attention in our history lessons, I donā€™t even know what the war was about. Surely generations later, this Merman would have no reason to see me as a threat, I would make it clear that I simply want to help. Yep, thatā€™s what Iā€™ll do.
ā€œHey seaweed brain, you need some help!?ā€
His aqua gaze instantly landed on me, his scowl deepened but I approached anyway, sort of like a beached whale, I knew he wouldnā€™t be able to move quickly on land. I stayed out of arms reach regardless, circling him slowly.
ā€œNot from the likes of you, Pest.ā€ He spat; he raised a hand to swat at me as if that would get the hint across. Unperturbed though I was, I approached closer, this time hovering around the fishhook, another place I knew for a fact he couldnā€™t reach.
ā€œI could just, you know-ā€œ I placed a hand on the hook and he hissed in pain, writhing violently I quickly zipped further away again. His piercing gaze met mine for a second time, the vibrant blue of his eyes mimicking the colour of his scales and I shivered.
ā€œDonā€™t fucking touch me.ā€ He roared and I raised my eyebrows at him.
A sat myself down on a rock jutting out of the sand, elbows on my knees as though waiting for him to figure it out himself then.
ā€œFine, Iā€™ll just sit back and watch you bleed out then, canā€™t have any humans finding your body later so I guess Iā€™ll have to bury you myself.ā€ I sighed as though not looking forward to the future job at hand.
ā€œYou could just fuck off.ā€
ā€œAnd have your discovery put my village in jeopardy!? Nope, itā€™s my job to ensure the safety of my fellow Fae, so I guess your stuck with me for a little while aye?ā€
He rolled his eyes before deciding to ignore me completely, he continued to struggle in vain to reach the fishhook. I must admit he was getting quite creative, twisting, and stretching his chiseled body this way and that, he even had the clever idea of trying to use a stick to reach, alas this only pushed on the hook causing him to hiss in pain again.
After probably an hour of failed attempts, he was starting to give up, his skin had grown paler, and I knew he wouldnā€™t be able to keep going much longer. With a powerful fury he slammed his fists into the sand.
ā€œNeptuneā€™s Ass!ā€ He swore before slamming his body onto his side and breathing heavily, his back turned to me.
ā€œI guess Merfolk really do swear like sailors.ā€ I muttered.
ā€œPiss off, midget.ā€ His muttered response came.
I flew closer again, this time circling round to his face and resting my feet in the sand a good armā€™s length away before offering my assistance again.
ā€œActually, midgets are human and quite a bit taller than the average Fae.ā€ I said arms crossed over my chest. ā€œYou ready to accept some help yet? Youā€™ve got maybe thirty more minutes before you bleed out completely.ā€
His eyes flicked toward the sand that was rapidly being soaked through with his blood before resting on mine again, he contemplated for a while before closing his eyes and muttering. ā€œFine.ā€
I smiled triumphantly and flew toward the wound site; I stood in the sand right before the fishhook and took a moment to marvel at the beauty of the scales before me. Each one twinkled brightly in the sun with subtle movements, each scale larger than my hand and I had to stop myself and hold back a boyish giggle as I realized I was staring at a Mermanā€™s ass.
ā€œHurry up already!ā€ The immense man growled from above, I rolled my eyes this time, wasnā€™t in such a hurry an hour ago I thought dryly.
I took a deep breath and grasped the arrowhead of the fishhook with both hands, pulling it out from this side would mean the serrated nooks on the hook wouldnā€™t pull chunks of flesh away with it. I planted my feet in the sand and pulled, the man overhead roared so loudly it continued ringing in my ears, but I guess I couldnā€™t blame him, this had to be painful.
ā€œAl-most-THERE!ā€ With one final tug I managed to pull the hook right through which sent me sprawling backwards into the sand and then my whole world shook. The Merman was moving, he swiveled his body around, arms falling and sinking into the sand on either side of me. My eyes bugged as his face hung low over me, I felt like I was going to shit my pants. This bastard was trying to intimidate me after I just saved his fucking life, is he serious!
ā€œDonā€™t eat me!ā€ I shrieked, my voice becoming embarrassingly high pitched as I clung to the fishhook, embracing it like it would save me.
ā€œGross.ā€ His face scrunched up as though he didnā€™t see me as a delicious thing to be devoured, I was mildly offended, I would be a delicious snack! Shut up Finley!
ā€œYou Fae have healing magic donā€™t you, heal me.ā€ He demanded, his eyes fierce and commanding.
I pushed the hook off of my chest and quirked an eyebrow at him, I couldnā€™t believe this man right now!
ā€œI was going to do that anyway asshole, what would be the point of taking out the hook just to let you die anyway?ā€
His face softened then, and he muttered a half hearted ā€˜Ohā€™ before backing up a bit.
ā€œNow turn around and give me your ass again.ā€ I said standing and dusting off my hands when I looked up at him, his eyebrows were sky high holding an incredulous look.
ā€œAh, not like that fish-brain, just...turn around.ā€
He complied without another word, swiveling so that the wound site was once again before me, still oozing out blood. Healing was not my forte and it would likely leave a scar, but he would live.
I placed my hands on the wound eliciting a wince from the Merman, but I kept going, I recited the words I had been taught as a child, scarred into my brain like most essential spells had been at a young age. If I had practiced more, Iā€™d be better at it, but this would have to do, my handsĀ developedĀ a soft green glow and seeped into the wound, slowly stitching the flesh and scales back together.
ā€œWhy are you helping me?ā€ His voice was void of all aggression and malice that it had held throughout our entire interaction, replaced instead with a genuine curiosity, why would I care about the likes of him?
ā€œBecause your injured.ā€ I said wondering why that hadnā€™t been obvious. ā€œI guess I would hope that if you ever found a Fairy in trouble, maybe you would help.ā€
ā€œHmmm.ā€ Was all he said in response, I finished up the healing spell and took my hands off of his tail, wiping the blood from his wound on my pants.
ā€œBesides, I meant it when I said Iā€™d have to hide your body if you died.ā€ I continued, smiling at my handiwork and then wondering what I should do now. A part of me wanted to zip off back into the forest, this creature was my enemy and was very capable of killing me in an instant now that Iā€™d healed him. And yet, another part of me wanted to stay, something about this man increasingly intrigued me and it wasnā€™t just his shimmery ass.
He let out a short laugh before swiveling back around slowly this time to face me, sitting comfortably in the sand, he eyed my handiwork briefly before speaking.
ā€œYouā€™re nothing like I thought a fairy would be.ā€ He said simply, colour had come back to his skin giving him an ethereal glow as he blocked out the sun above from me, essentially casting me in his shadow, but I didnā€™t mind it at all.
A blush filled my cheeks as he continued to stare down at me and I shook my head with a laugh, trying to keep the mood light.
ā€œYeah? Well, you werenā€™t exactly like the fairytales either.ā€
The corners of his lips curved into a small smile, he then lowered himself down into the sand, laying on his stomach with his arms crossed in front of me, lowering himself to my level instead of looming over me.
ā€œWhatā€™s your name?ā€ He asked.
ā€œFinley.ā€ I said simply, unsure of what exactly was happening, heā€™d seemed so menacing before and now, he was almost coming off as friendly.
ā€œIā€™m Kairos, itā€™s been interesting to meet you Finley.ā€
He held out a finger in front of me, a handshake, was I forming an alliance with Merfolk? Was this the start of a new era? Calm down Fin, youā€™re not that important.
We stood there awkwardly for what felt like forever, his eyes were large and curious as he seemed to drink in all five inches of me over and over, like a Faeling cooing over a ladybug.
ā€œSo, uh- I guess Iā€™ll see you around.ā€ I said shoving my hands into my pockets and flicking my wings ready to fly.
ā€œYou donā€™t have to go.ā€ He said.
ā€œWhy do you want me to stay? Youā€™re healed, wouldnā€™t you prefer to be in the ocean?ā€ I gestured toward the large expanse of sea before us, the sun was almost at itā€™s peak, my shift would be over soon.
I wonder if this is something I need to report?
ā€œI kinda wanna see what youā€™ll do next.ā€ He stated as though I were some kind of side show attraction. ā€œAnd besides I can stay out of the water for hours, I donā€™t come on land often, so Iā€™m making the most of it.ā€
ā€œWhat do you want me to do, juggle?ā€
ā€œGo on then.ā€ He flourished his hand inviting me to take to the stage.
ā€œPiss off.ā€ I laughed. ā€œBesides I canā€™t really juggleā€¦ā€ I added as an afterthought. ā€œI can do this thoughā€¦ā€
With a whispered incantation, I brought two brilliant flames to life, one in each hand. They flew from my hands and collided together in the air, creating a large fire ball that then danced around his head and in front of his eyes which were wide in amazement.Ā
He reached out a finger as though to pop it like a balloon, before I could revert the spell, his finger touched the fiery ball and his hand jerked back as he hissed.
ā€œItā€™s fire dumbass, itā€™s hot.ā€ I said flatly, extinguishing the flame.
ā€œThatĀ was fire?ā€ He asked, clearly, heā€™d never been on land long enough to witness fire, well perhaps not close enough to know that it was hot.
ā€œI guess youā€™d never see fire, living underwater.ā€ I shrugged and then asked. ā€œDo merfolk have magic?ā€ It was a question that had been burning, I knew they were technically magical beings, but did that mean they could wield magic as the Fae could?
With that he planted his hands in the sand abruptly and pushed himself up to a sit, causing me to crane my neck back to keep on looking at his face, not that I minded a face full of his chest.
He flourished his hands at the ocean, and I was going to ask if he was, okay? I didnā€™t have to wonder long because after a few quick flicks of his fingers there was a bubble of water.
It floated on the surface of the ocean before Kairos beckoned it closer and it gingerly flew toward us before hovering above me. Within the watery sphere there were patterns forming as the water within it swirled in constant movement, it was mesmerizing, and then it popped.
ā€œBastard!ā€ I swore as I was unceremoniously drenched with water from wing to feet, I gave my wings a flick, but they were heavy with water, great, looks like Iā€™ll be walking home.
Above me the Merman was positively cackling with laughter, his shoulders shaking and his eyes sparkling with joy, right, so this was payback.
ā€œHardy Ha, very funny, youā€™ve soaked my wings through though idiot, now Iā€™m stuck here.ā€
I realized my mistake as soon as the words left my mouth, Iā€™d just admitted to a known enemy of the Fae that they had made me vulnerable, as well as revealing a vital weakness of our kind.
ā€œIs that so?ā€ His eyes turned dark like they had the first time his eyes had landed on me, with no warning whatsoever, the giant jerk had his hand wrapped around my waist, fortunately my hands remained free, and I readily started thumping on his knuckles.
My hands lit with flames, and I was about to show him a real show when he turned me around to face away from him and a warm breeze blew my hair forward.
I froze, flames dying on my fingers, and I fought to stop the involuntary shiver that ran through me as he blew another breeze over my wings. I twisted my head around trying to catch his face, but my eyes only zeroed in on his large lips pressed together as they blew another gust over me.
ā€œW-what are you doing?ā€ I barely mustered the words to speak at all, I was in some form of shock, fear, and confusion as to what the hell he was doing to me.
ā€œIā€™m drying your wings, what does it look like?ā€ His breath was so close to me that his words vibrated through me, and I couldnā€™t fight the shiver this time.
I managed a weak ā€˜Ohā€™ before another warm breeze rocked me, my body began to relax, my eyes closed and I sank into the oddly blissful feeling that came from each of his immense and gentle warm breaths against my body.
The feeling came to an end too soon however because he then began to lower me back to the ground, releasing me onto my jelly legs that very nearly gave way under me as I turned to face him once more.
ā€œWell, itā€™s been fun shorty, but I should get going.ā€
I nodded my head like a guppy before shaking the stupor off of my face and actually responding.
ā€œYeah uh, me too actually, my shifts almost over so-ā€œ
ā€œThanks for saving my life.ā€ He cut me off. ā€œWill you be back to the beach again? Or have I scared you away for life now?ā€
ā€œHa, you my friend, are not scary, and yeah I visit occasionally, might see you here, maybe under better circumstances next time yeah?ā€
He laughed softly and gave me a small nod.
ā€œSee you next time Finley.ā€
With that he edged himself closer to the water and before I knew it, he was gone, quick as a flash and only a playful flap of his aqua fin to show that whatever had just happened had actually happened.
Smiling ruefully to myself I took to the sky and headed back towards home, perhaps being a scout wasnā€™t so bad and besides I was healing a relationship between Fae and Merfolk, whatā€™s the worst that could happen?

G/t shitpost
What if we get rid of the boring human/giant and instead there's a little fae who accidently or on purpose finds a mermaid/merman and they hit it off! OR there's angst! Maybe they are sworn enemies, or their races are supposed to be enemies of each other. Star crossed lovers!
The dynamic would be really fun to play with cos the Fairy wouldn't be able to go underwater without wetting their wings, or it's a trust thing the fairy willingly goes into the water to be with their friend even though it essentially makes them vulnerable around their larger friend.
Mythical creatures are my thing, maybe I will write out this scenario, bonus points if both are gay for each other.

Storm
So it's been a hot minute! I am still writing!
This is a short from a novel I am currently writing but wanted to flesh out some characters and play with setting, plus this scene had been dancing in my head for weeks and needed to happen now!
The story is about a gang of pirates who steal an important crystal from a Fae village. Skye is sent to stow away on the ship to retrieve the crystal and return home. She is given a crystal fragment to aid her that holds enough glamour to disguise her as a human for thirty days, given she doesn't use magic, or it will drain faster.
However, she didn't account for the possibility of actually liking the crew or falling for their handsome Captain Blaine. Things take a turn when a storm approaches and Skye is forced to either reveal her true form and save the ship or let the crew and the crystal perish at sea.
Approx. 3200 words
A Sword and Skye short story
A Pirate Fairy romance
I stood beside him as he grasped the helm of the Sea Raven, the wind rifled through his dark wavy hair and when he caught my eyes with his deep brown ones he smiled. A warm look that seeped right through me. I fingered the crystal fragment that hung on a chain and rested just below my throat, it didnā€™t pulse strongly as it had done before, it was weak, I was running out of time.
Sensing my apprehension his expression quickly changed from boyish joy to concern, and that hurt my heart even more.
ā€œWhatā€™s with the long face? Weā€™re free thanks to you, cheer up Skye.ā€ Blaine wrapped an arm around me and pulled me into his chest, my head fit perfectly under his chin, I fit perfectly to him, but it wouldnā€™t stay this way.
ā€œNothing Blaine, Iā€™m okay justā€¦ā€ I let out a breath, enjoying his encompassing presence. ā€œWe are ten days from Crestwind Harbour and Iā€™m not looking forward to the goodbye.ā€
It was a half truth, I would be saying goodbye to him, my journey ended when we would hit the shore and I would take the large quartz crystal back to my village where it belonged, where I belonged. Though it didnā€™t really feel like I belonged there anymore, I felt so very comfortable right where I was now, right here with Blaine.
ā€œYou know you donā€™t have to say goodbye right?ā€ He turned me in his arms placing a finger under my chin to tilt my head up to look at him, I wouldnā€™t cry.
ā€œI know we promised to get you somewhere safe, but we ARE safe, youā€™d be safe here with us, thereā€™s nothing stopping you.ā€
Oh, but there was so much stopping me, once he knew who I truly was, heā€™d drop me like a hot rock, not to mention I HAD to go back home. My village was depending on me to return the crystal that these pirates, my friends, had stolen.
ā€œA pirateā€™s life is not for me.ā€ I whispered, a small smirk quirking at the corner of my mouth as I played on the words the crew had sung numerous times over the last couple of weeks.
ā€œRespectfully, I disagree.ā€ He quirked an eyebrow and smirked, lowering his face to mine so that our noses were touching, I breathed in the miniscule space left between us.
ā€œThereā€™s nothing respectful about you.ā€ I countered, my smile broadening, teasing.
ā€œIs that so?ā€ He teased back, his hand gliding down my back to my waist before travelling further down and giving my rear a playful pinch. ā€œI suppose my reputation proceeds me.ā€
Gently I placed my hands on his chest and created a space between our bodies, looking up through the lashes of my eyes, I stood on tip toes to give his nose a kiss.
ā€œPromise me youā€™ll think about it?ā€ He whispered before leaning down further to plant a kiss to my lips. I kissed him back wondering if it may be the last time I ever get to do that before reluctantly breaking away and stepping back.
ā€œI promise.ā€
I turned back around then with my back to his chest, soaking in his warmth as his arms raised to take the helm and steer the ship north-east towards our destination. His large hands found mine and he guided them to the wheel, gently applying pressure this way and that, he was showing me how to sail a ship.
I smiled, basking in the joy that he got from sailing, the wind billowing around us, the smell of salt and wood, it did feel like freedom, no wonder he loved this so much. Though I said a pirateā€™s life was not for me, I didnā€™t believe that, for once I felt comfortable right where I was and this way of life was so tempting and so exciting, maybe in another life, a life where I was human, this could have been me.
Ā ā€œCAPTAIN! STORMS BREWIN FROM THE WEST!ā€
Blain turned in the direction that Malakai had indicated and indeed it was getting quite dark behind us, the clouds overhead were moving in a north-easterly direction and moving fast, the storm would reach us before long.
I peeked over my shoulder to gauge Blaineā€™s expression, and it had become one of stone and focus, the same way heā€™d looked at me when I had first been discovered stowed away in the scullery all those weeks ago. Calculating and focused.
ā€œJasper, take Skye below deck.ā€ He passed me off to Jasper, the older greying man who had found me in his scullery, the cook who strived so hard to make sure the men were well fed and healthy.
ā€œAll hands lads! Weā€™re heading due East, thereā€™s a chance the storm could miss us!ā€ Blaine began barking orders, getting the main sail up, his plan was to skirt the edge of the storm, avoiding the eye, there was no time for us to get out of the way before it was on top of us.
I followed Jasper below deck, I made my way to the captainā€™s quarters where I could see through the window to watch the oncoming storm as energy pulsed in my bones. I wanted to help, I COULD help, this was my affinity after-all, the pulse and energy of a storm coursed through me, I could control it, I could steer it away from us, weaken it.
I could only do all of those things if I revealed that I was in fact not human, a dangerous idea to play with.
I grit my teeth as a particularly aggressive wave rushed up to meet the bow of the ship obscuring my view momentarily, it was gaining on us quickly. Lightening crackled though the violet sky and I could no longer stand silently and watch, the wind changed direction and I could see the eye, there was no outrunning this thing.
I climbed the stairs sloppily cursing the weight of my human body as it flung me into the wooden walls of the ship, there would be a bruise there tomorrow. I pushed the hatch open and stumbled onto the deck. Instantly drenched, the deck was flooded and getting pummeled with rain and wave.
Blaine was barking orders over the roar of the wind and the crew were scrambling about pulling tightly on rigging and pulleys, trying in vain to keep the ship steady and on course. I weaved through them all and headed for the mast, my plan wasnā€™t a great one but if I could get to the birdā€™s nest at the top, I could use my last remaining magic to steer the storm away just long enough for us to be clear of it.
No one would see me as I reverted to my Fae form and perhaps, I could hide on the ship unseen until we reached Crestwind Harbour. I tightened the belt around my loosely fitting blouse and grabbed the rigging, pulling myself upwards, this would be much easier if I could just fly up there.
Iā€™d made it halfway up, my plan going well until we were hit with a rogue wave, pushing the ship almost all the way over onto its side, I held on for dear life as gravity pulled my legs from the rope ladder, and I white knuckled the slick rope to prevent me from being thrown into the angry sea that my feet were just brushing.
ā€œSKYE!ā€ Blaineā€™s voice bellowed out around the storm, shit, I had been hoping he wouldnā€™t spot me, I closed my eyes as the ship righted itself to a stand and my feet found rope once again. I didnā€™t look down; I kept my eyes upwards and kept going.
ā€œSKYE!ā€
Keep going, keep going.
I heaved myself onto the circular platform on the top and raised my arms, not wasting a second more.
Immediately my body felt calm as it was flooded with power, I could no longer tell whether or not the energy was coming from my crystal fragment or from the core of the storm, but I used it.
My body began to glow softly until it reached my fingertips and sharp sparks of power bursts from me, gliding along the wind and amongst the clouds, I giggled with the storm, enjoying the way the waves moved with our synchronized energy. Speaking to the storm as though we were old childhood friends, I understood the storm and the joy that it revered in when its energy manifested in a peak of power.
I then gently reminded the storm that a ship was sailing below them, the storm felt guilt briefly before it assured me that the ship was merely in its way, and it was up to fate as to whether or not the crew on board would survive. I pushed gently and reminded the storm of my own origin and what was being held within the ship.
We came to an agreement and the wind changed direction again, this time away from the Sea Raven and the many souls aboard.
I fell out of the storms consciousness and sank to the wet platform below me, the wind died down, the clouds began to dissipate, and I whispered a thank-you, smiling up at the sky as the last of my power was drained from me. Looking at the sky above I could ignore the fact that the world was growing larger around me, that was until an earthquake caused by a giantā€™s boot slammed down a mere few inches from my body.
ā€œSKYE!ā€ Blaineā€™s voice had always been loud and powerful, commanding, but this was something else, I clasped my hands over my ears and rolled away from him, I hoped I may be able to hide under the nearby rope before he spotted me, but I was running out of my quota of luck today.
Getting to my feet my wings buzzed to life, but they were damp and heavy, I began to sprint toward the rope narrowly avoiding another footstep crashing behind me.
ā€œWhat the-ā€œ
I ducked under the rope, breathing heavily and not daring to peek upwards, Iā€™d been spotted, Iā€™d been seen by Blaine himself.
I cursed my stupidity for not finding a more secure and hidden location, but I held no regrets about what Iā€™d done. The storm had been powerful and unforgiving, it would have claimed them had I not intervened.
I clenched my eyes shut as a large and powerful hand extended toward me at an alarming speed. A tear spilling down my cheek as the giant appendages wrapped around my body pinning my arms down. Though, thankfully leaving my wings to hang over his knuckles and buzz uselessly against his thick fingers.
The wind swept past me quickly and I imagine I was being brought up to his face, but I couldnā€™t bring myself to look, I didnā€™t want to see him this way.
ā€œSkye?ā€ His voice was lower now, it didnā€™t rattle my bones but still reverberated the air around me.
I finally opened my eyes and was greeted with the stern and confused face of a man I had been falling in love with. Water beaded down his sun kissed skin, tanned from spending more than half his life at sea, his brown eyes larger than I had ever seen them before, I now noticed had small flecks of a vibrant green through them.
His hair hung wet about his face, dripping and slightly curled at the ends, my eyes then flicked to his lips, two plump cushions wet with sea water that my own lips used to fit so perfectly and now almost spanned the length of my whole body.
ā€œAnswer me Skye, what did you do?ā€ His voice now a low growl, I must have missed what he said before, too overwhelmed with our vast differences now and grieving the loss of my friend, now that my true identity was revealed.
ā€œI-I moved it awayā€¦ t-the stormā€¦ā€ My response was weak, and I cursed my quivering body for making me appear even more pathetic than I felt in that moment.
ā€œDid you bring on the storm?ā€ His eyes were sharp and piercing and my heart fluttered against the tight grip of his fingers.
ā€œW-what!?ā€ I shrieked, he couldnā€™t possibly think I brought the storm here, that I intended it to kill them, did he truly think I would do something like that, especially since we had become so close?
ā€œDid you conjure the storm?ā€
I was speechless, now that heā€™d seen me for who I really am, everything else was washed away, any trust I had gained was gone, my body deflated at the idea, and I tried desperately to convince him otherwise.
ā€œNo, Blaine, I swear, I-I moved it away.ā€
ā€œHere yar captain.ā€ Malakai had climbed up behind Blaine and handed him a small wooden cage, my eyes bugged, he wouldnā€™t.
Malakai avoided my gaze as he handed off the circular cage to his captain, his expression void of emotion and wrinkled with the lingering nervousness that the close call of the storm brought.
With one hand Blaine pulled out a set of keys from his pants pocket and opened the cage, his other hand then began to move me toward the opening, my legs kicked at his fingers, but he didnā€™t slow.
ā€œBlaine please! You know me! D-donā€™t lock me upā€¦ā€ Iā€™d started strong but my voice faded as I was dumped inside, the door closed shut and locked immediately, ignoring anything more I had to say. I curled in on myself and whimpered pitifully, my heart lay in pieces, my body weak and drained of any magic to defend myself and the tears came as freely as the storm had.
The journey to the Captains Quarters was a blur, I ignored the gasps of the crew Iā€™d once called friends, Blaine didnā€™t say another word as he placed the cage on his desk and then left the room. Presumably to clean up the deck, check for damages and re-set the course that the ship had drifted from.
During that time, I felt my body grow numb with hurt, and finally succumbed to sleep.
When I woke it was dark within the cabin save for the warm glow from an oil lantern on Blaineā€™s desk, looking around, it didnā€™t take me long to find Blaineā€™s own unconscious form resting on his desk. His head gently laying on its side over crossed arms that were littered with scars, healed from fights long past.
I could almost imagine that nothing had changed, looking at him there, so peaceful in his sleep with his now dry wavy hair gently sweeping his closed eyes. I wanted to reach out and brush his hair from his face gently before pressing a kiss to his forehead and silently wishing him a blissful night sleep, but everything had changed.
Gripping the bars with my hands I wondered how best to play this out, to ensure my own safety, to convince him that I was still me, that I hadnā€™t meant to deceive him, and that I would need to return home with the crystal they had stolen. Nothing came to mind that would end well for me, so I took a deep breath and reminded myself that I was strong regardless of the cage I was kept in or that my body was drained of magic.
ā€œBlaine!ā€ I yelled, my arms were shaking but I willed them to still, I hadnā€™t played damsel in distress this entire time, I wasnā€™t about to succumb to that now.
His eyes blinked briefly, lifting his head off the sturdy oak desk his eyes zeroed in on me, narrowing in distrust.
ā€œYour awake.ā€ He stated, voice scratchy from sleep.
ā€œWe need to talk.ā€ I said sternly, his glower deepened, and I almost lost my nerve again but took another deep breath and steadied myself.
ā€œLetā€™s start with the real reason you stowed away on my ship.ā€ He countered, I had been prepared to answer questions, and I was going to be truthful with him this time, he deserved that much, even if it cost me my life.
I explained all the events that had led me to where I was standing right now, why the village had sent a scavenger to sneak onto the dreaded Sea Raven, why the crystal was so important to us and why it needed to be returned. I explained about the glamour in the crystal fragment that I wore, and how the magic within it had been drained in my attempt to save the ship.
I hadnā€™t meant to grow attached to the crew or to Blaine, I hadnā€™t wanted to lie about any of it, now more than anything I wanted to make things right for everyone.
ā€œI wanted to tell you Blaine, but I was in too deep, and I didnā€™t know how to dig myself out.ā€
ā€œWhy should I believe anything you say, youā€™ve been lying to us since day one.ā€ He growled, he didnā€™t seem as angry anymore though, only hurt seemed to be swimming in his eyes now.
ā€œYou have no reason to, I just want to do the right thing, I care about the crew, I know they need the money youā€™ll get from the crystal, but I also know my village depends on this crystal to protect us. Without it we are vulnerableā€¦ā€ Exactly like how I was feeling right now, but I continued.
ā€œAnd I care about you.ā€ I said softly, my eyes met his and he looked away. ā€œWhen you asked me to stay, I wanted to, I made a promise to you, but I also made a promise to my people, and they are depending on me. I donā€™t know what to do Blaine.ā€
He closed his eyes, head still turned away from me and he took a deep breath as if giving himself the strength to speak.
ā€œI canā€™t return that crystal.ā€ He said finally after what felt like a lifetime of silence. ā€œBut we can return you home.ā€
I let out a sigh of relief, that was more mercy than I had been expecting, I decided to push my dwindling luck a little further.
ā€œWhat if we trade you something more valuable?ā€ His interest peaked then, and he lowered his face closer to my cage, causing me to take a few steps backwards.
ā€œLike what?ā€ He challenged.
ā€œWe have lived on that island for centuries, collected treasures from kings and queens, lost fortunes that wash up or have been gifted to us, a treasure more valuable than any crystal could provide for you.ā€ I smiled then as his eyes lit up with intrigue, contemplating.
ā€œIā€™ll think about it.ā€ He said, almost teasing me with the words I had said to him only a few hours before everything had gone wrong.
He hesitated only briefly before opening the door to the cage and allowing me to step out onto the desk. He held a hand before me, his index finger extended toward me, a peace offering, a deal.
ā€œPromise?ā€ I said, my hand grasping the tip of his finger as he gently shook my hand.
Ā His soft smile was all I needed to know that things could be healed between us, perhaps I really could make things right, the crew would get the money they needed, and my village would get our crystal returned.
There was a teasing smirk playing at the corners of his lips as he solidified our deal.
ā€œPromise.ā€

So I have some news! I don't want to speak too soon but I'm writing a novel where one of the main characters is a size shifter. I plan to have about 22 chapters and I'm about half way through! Feeling like I'm on a roll and may actually complete a story for once!
Anyway my question is, would you read a book that features G/t but the size shifting doesn't happen until around chapter 8, from there it will feature heavily and is a main feature in the story but up to this point its sort of been kept a secret.
It's still a few months away from completion and from there I will release chapters here on tumblr as it goes through its first round of editing.
But yeah I just wanted to get a feel on whether or not you'd pick up a book that features g/t but maybe be disappointed that it doesn't become a major element in the story until later?

Is there anybody else in Luke's family or in their world who's also a sizeshifter? I bet Luke would feel relieved to know he's not alone if there were :3c
This is a fantastic question but unfortunately the answer is no, Luke is alone in his size shifting abilities. I have written an AU in which Luke does meet another size shifter and that story is called It's a Small World.
There is a reason why Luke is the only size shifter but that will be revealed later on, currently in the storyline Luke doesn't know why he has these abilities yet either so that is why we have to wait until later! Sorry!
I will reveal a little bit more about the lore in this story and that is, though Luke is the only person with size shifting abilities he will not be the only one who has a magical ability. Matt's dreams of superheroes may be coming true after all, but we will have to wait for more! Coming soon!

Well now I'm curious, has Matt had nightmares over how he find out, since he didn't know it was his friend and got grabbed by a giant?
Sorry about the Hiatus but I am back! And answering questions, and yes, he has the poor baby, though he never admits it to Luke, the whole experience was quite jarring for him, and he still has occasional nightmares about it, like this one for example, approx 1.8k words:
Matt's Nightmares Two
ā€œLuke! Dude where are you!?ā€ Mattā€™s voice seemed to echo around him, he was holding Lukeā€™s bag over one arm and jogging through the increasingly dense forest in search of his friend. Luke had just run out from a test in a panic and when Matt had followed him into the forest, he expected to see his best mate hugging a tree or having a nervous breakdown of some kind, but his friend was nowhere to be found.
ā€œLuke! Are you okay!?ā€ He tried to call out again but with no luck, the further he stepped through the forest the darker it was getting around him and he swore if he looked up, heā€™d see stars, it was that dark.
He continued to walk on aimlessly until he heard a rustle up ahead, it sounded as though something was moving through the trees, although much higher than any human could reach, he decided to investigate further and practically stumbled into a clearing. Suddenly the world was so bright that it stung his eyes, and he blinked up at the silhouette of an impossibly large monster.
Hesitating for only a moment, he dropped the bag and ran, his heart beating wildly in his chest.
ā€œMATT WAIT!ā€ The voice thundered behind him, and he wondered briefly how it knew his name, but he didnā€™t have to wonder for long because the world around him darkened again as he was engulfed by the shadow of five large appendages.
Matt let out a scream of terror as the fingers closed around him, wrapping him in a tight fist that was then lifted off the ground at breakneck speed.
Hyperventilating and at the point of passing out, Matt looked up into the eyes of the monster as he was brought up to its face.
ā€œMatt itā€™s me.ā€ The voice though still reverberated around him held some familiarity, Matt took some deep breaths and focused on the eyes before him, dark blue eyes that reminded him of the deep sea but also reminded him of his friend. His best friend, Luke.
ā€œLuke?ā€ He couldnā€™t hide the astonishment from his tone as the giantā€™s face lit up with joy and relief, Luke slowly opened his hand only to push Matt into his chest in an extremely awkward and oversized hug.
ā€œOkay you oversized puppy, do you wanna explain whatā€™s going on now or what?ā€ Matt pushed against the chest in front of him, trying to let Luke know that he was done hugging now. The large hand behind him fell away leaving him to cling for dear life to the fabric of Lukeā€™s shirt.
ā€œLuke!ā€ Matt whined in surprise. ā€œDude, not cool!ā€ Matt grunted with effort, there was no response from his giant friend, only the immense breaths gushing above him and then suddenly everything was moving as Luke got to his feet. Mattā€™s knuckles strained from the effort to hold onto the fabric as tightly as he could as it swayed and moved far too quickly.
ā€œLuke!ā€ Mattā€™s voice was high and shrill at the prospect that his friend couldnā€™t hear him, did he forget that he was there somehow? Was this some kind of joke?
With no response from Luke yet again, Matt thinks through his options, he could climb up to Lukeā€™s shoulder, closer to his friend ear where he might be able to hear him better or he could climb down.
Ā Seeing as Luke was currently walking, getting closer to those bus sized sneakers was not appealing. Up it is then, Matt thought ruefully as he strained with the effort of pulling his body upwards against the motions of a giant.
Finally, Matt pulls himself up onto Lukeā€™s shoulder where he sits and regains his breath leaning against Lukeā€™s neck.
ā€œWhat the hell is that?ā€ Lukeā€™s voice vibrates his body being so close to the vocal cords in his neck.
ā€œItā€™s me ā€¦. Matt.ā€ Matt huffs still slowing his breathing down and annoyed that his friend had forgotten he was there, he didnā€™t think he was THAT small compared to the gargantuan man.
Out of his peripheral vision Matt seeā€™s a large hand reaching up to him, relived that his friend would pick him up to acknowledge him once more he smiled in relief but hesitated when the hand approaching him didnā€™t slow down and it didnā€™t look as though it was reaching for him either.
The back of Lukeā€™s hand came streamlining for him and he narrowly avoided being swatted off the shoulder by grasping the collar of Lukeā€™s shirt and dangling from the back of his neck.
ā€œFuck dude! Luke, I swear to Godā€¦oh shit.ā€ Lukeā€™s hand made another move for him, somehow twisting in a way that it could reach him from the odd angle, this time Matt didnā€™t have enough time to move out of the way and was, as a result, pummelled by what felt like a train on impact before falling.
The world around him blurred, the wind rushing past him and the forest floor becoming alarmingly close with each passing millisecond. He screamed again as he hit the ground hard.
Matt was sure heā€™d broken everything in his body and wasnā€™t even sure how he was still alive, he blinked up at his friend who was walking away from him.
Footsteps rattling his broken body through the forest floor and Luke kept on walking as though nothing had happened.
ā€œLuke please.ā€ Matt begged weakly as his vision began to fill with twinkly spots.
ā€œLukeā€¦ Iā€™m here ā€¦ please see me.ā€ With his last words uttered much too softly for the giant to hear, he closed his eyes and succumbed to the fact that he was invisible, nothing but an insect that his friend couldnā€™t see and didnā€™t care about.
ā€œFuck!ā€ Mattā€™s eyes snapped open, and he sat up in bed in a cold sweat, his hands danced around his body to make sure everything was intact and only when he was sure he was in his bed in their shared apartment then he took a slow calming breath.
ā€œWell, that was fucked up.ā€ He muttered, he looked over at the clock on his nightstand and groaned, even for him it was early, only just 5am, but there was no way in hell he was going to be going back to sleep that night.
With a groan he pushed himself out of bed with the plan to have a strong cup of coffee and a smoke, encouraging himself with the possibility of watching the sunrise in the next few hours.
Sitting outside on the balcony with his feet up on the railing looking at the slowly fading stars in the early morning he found himself lost in thought. He wondered if there were times where Luke didnā€™t see him or didnā€™t hear him simply because of how big he was when he was a giant. Matt also knew that the experiences he had in his nightmare were not reality, Luke would never be so reckless, and he knew he was always extremely alert when he was a giant.
Besides the dream had been triggered by the memory of how Matt had discovered Lukeā€™s abilities and what had happened in that dream was definitely not how it had played out in reality. He had been scared and ran from Luke but when he realised who it was, he trusted his friend and Luke had been nothing but gentle and patient. That was who his friend was, he reminded himself.
An exaggerated yawn came from the sliding door as Luke stepped out with a coffee also in hand and plopped down on the chair next to his best friend.
ā€œSo, I know what woke me up this morning but what in gods name got you up before 8am?ā€ Matt snickered at his extremely tired and irritable looking friend; Lukeā€™s hair was normally a fluffy mess, but this was next level. Luke only shot him a half assed glare before sighing.
ā€œHad a bad dream and didnā€™t wanna close my eyes again.ā€ Luke muttered.
ā€œThatā€™s so weird, I had a nightmare too, maybe we have a ghost or demon haunting us.ā€ Matt suggested.
Luke rolled his eyes. ā€œGhosts and demons arenā€™t real; it was just a coincidence.ā€ Luke continued bored like heā€™d had this conversation a million times.
ā€œOh yeah, ghosts and demons arenā€™t real but size shifters are?ā€ He quirked an eyebrow at his friend, he had to admit, anything was possible if someone like Luke existed.
ā€œJust shhh, my brain canā€™t do this conversation yet, letā€™s just look at the stars.ā€ Luke suggested sleepily, before Matt could respond with another purposefully annoying quip, he could hear the snores from his best mate and turned to see he was well and truly fast asleep.
So much for not wanting to close his eyes again, Matt got his phone out and snapped a quick picture, Lukeā€™s head had rolled back and to the side slightly with his mouth hanging wide open, he looked hilarious, and he would post that on social media this morning for the world to see. He gently picked up the mug from Lukeā€™s hands and placed it on the small second-hand table they had picked up when they had first moved in.
The sun was now just starting to rise, giving the dark of night an orange hue, Matt wondered if Luke had nightmares about the same things that he did, it gave him a kind of comfort to think that Luke was as scared of accidently hurting him or not seeing him as he was of being hurt or unseen by his friend. Maybe one day they would talk through their fears, but today was not the day, Matt promised that the rest of their day would be a slow and gentle one, they both would need it.
Notes: Though the initial fear of being grabbed by an unknown giant is definitely there, Matthewā€™s fear of being forgotten or unnoticed is triggered in these dreams, stemming originally from his childhood (we will have more backstory on Matthew soon I promise) and cultivates in some extreme attention seeking behavior throughout his life. One of Mattā€™s greatest fears is being unnoticed or unappreciated by those he cares about most. Poor Matty I think heā€™s done having nightmares now, the boys are due for some fluff now!

G/t shitpost
So I love when a movie or TV show surprises you with unexpected G/t elements! And tonight it felt like I was slapped in the face with it and I was around family!
So my Aunt is rewatching the percy jackson movies and then going to compare it with the new series, anyway! Right at the end of Percy Jackson and the lightening theif! Spoiler alert!
Percy confronts the gods to return the lightening bolt to Zeus, the gods are giants!
When Percy walked in that room I lifted my blanket up to cover my smile, the butterflies in my stomach were raging when Poseidon knelt down to speak to his son! I was screaming at him (in my head) to pick him up and give him a fatherly hug to the chest, he shrunk down to Percy's size instead (classic comforting size shifter move).
So yeah that was awesome and now I'm visualising fanfiction ideas in my head!
End of rant. Watch the last ten minutes of the movie.

Right!! It actually feels like being in the closet, like even dropping subtle hints and things is so nerve wracking it feels like your coming out!
And no I have not yet come out as a G/t enthusiast... yet! Maybe one day šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«
why is liking and obsessing over g/t so EMBARRASSING like i get a lil panicky whenever the topic skirts close to it. it's my biggest interest but i can't TALK about it, y'know? it's not even that weird but it's JUST outside the range of normal. you can talk about liking tall people or about lady d from re and transformers but GOD FORBID you want to be five inches tall
