Here's my Sketch of a Velvet Spider! Also known as a Ladybird Spider. They are as soft as velvet and super cute! They come in many bright colors.
Velvet spiders look like lady bugs with little spots. They are native to Ancient Greece and many parts of Europe. Many people actually keep them as pets, as they are a social species.
I hope you enjoy these little guys as much as I do! 🕷💕

Here's my Sketch of the four horses of Helios and his son Phaethon.
The history of Helios'd horses is really a fun dive. If you look closely, the horses in the illustrations are actually very small. That is because miniature horses were bred for war in 800-500 BCE. Hailing from the island of Skyros, they are only 10 hands tall! (Pictured Below).
According to Ovid, the four immortal horses are Aethon, Eous, Phlegon, and Pyrois. In ancient greek they were 2 female horses in the front, Thunder and Lightning. Two male horses in the rear (Time and flame).
Helios is not the only one in ancient mythos to have horses. His two sisters, Selene (moon) and Eos (Dawn) ride the sky with him and both have four horses each. These make up the THE HIPPOI ATHANATOI, the immortal horses.
Alright, that's my history rant🐍💕

Here is my sketch of Callisto- A.K.A. the constellation Ursa Major!
As the myth goes, Callisto was a nymph in Artemis's sacred entourage of female hunters. There are many versions of this tale involving how she was tricked, who turned Callisto into a bear, how her son died, and how she died. In fact, some say the myth dates all the way back to prehistoric times.
Callisto, Καλλιστώ, means "Most Beautiful" in greek. Artemis was called 'Artemis Kalliste' - Artemis the most beautiful. Many say this is how Callisto got her name. The ancient city of Arcadia was named after Arcas(Αρκάς), the little bear.
For fun, I based my sketch on Epiphany from Xena the Warrior Princess, who also has an animal son and a tragic story.
Well, that's my art and history rant! 🐍💕
I hope you enjoyed!

Here is my nature sketch of the Greek Apollo Butterfly 🦋. Not only are they adorably soft and fuzzy, but they have beautiful painted faces.
If you look closely, you will see two eyes, a nose with nostrils, red cheeks, and a smile. Some Apollo butterflies even have a mustache and other markings. Each one has a unique face.
Butterflies in the ancient world often symbolized souls of the dead. They are not a common motif in Greece; they were much more popular in Northern Europe, Rome, and in the Middle East.
One famous depiction of butterflies are the ancient bracelets found in the tomb of Egyptian Queen Hetepheres (2600 BCE). The bracelets were made in ancient Minoan Greece out of pure silver given to her as a gift.
Alright, that is my Nature and History rant on Greek Butterflies! 💕🐍

Here is my sketch of the three goddesses of Fury, The Erinyes.
The goddesses are very similar to Harpies and Gorgons. They typically wear snakes and have wings. They are hunters of men, and are known for their hunting boots, short skirts, and whips.
The three sisters appear as early as ancient Minoa, and are female goddesses that bring punishment onto wicked men. The original name for the trinity of sisters was "Strife" 𐀁𐀪𐀝𐀸.
The three sisters had no names until 90 BC , when they were given the roman names TISIPHONE (Vengful Destruction), MEGAIRA(Jealous Rage) , and ALEKTO(Endless Anger) .
So I did research on 'hunting boots' of ancient Greece, and WOW! I want these boots so bad!😍
Alright, That's my art and history rant 🐍💕

Medusa as a Jester for Greek Carnival of Apokries 🎠🎪🎭🌈.
So here are the design elements I added. The layered dress is based on the clothing of Ancient Minoan Women from Crete (3000-1100 BCE).
As you can see the skirt were layered with fabric prints, cut at the waist, then totally open at the chest.
I tried to mimic the design, but gave it a more flowing 'Alice in Wonderland' , Jester look for the Carnival theme.
The wings are based on the African/ Greek HooPoe which I felt looked like the original Medusa wing design. Her wings are described as black, white, and gold.
Then I added a Jester look to give her a unique style to go along with her scales. This is in theme with the Greek Carnival of Apokries. This festival dates back to Dionysos, the ancient Greek god of wine, fun and fertility.
That's my art and history rant! Hope you enjoyed! 🐍🎭💕

This is a sketch of the Ovid Style 'fair cheeked' Medusa with beautiful golden hair. A sweet gentle priestess with a love of nature and animals, cruelly turned into the hideous Medusa by Athena out of jealousy. I personally enjoy Ovid, and don't get the hate. The man is a Roman nerd who just wanted to write Greek Fan Fiction. Leave him alone, haha.
I love that the Greek South Admiral Butterfly looks like an evil Chesire cat grin with tusk like teeth! It makes a perfect fantasy Medusa Butterfly.
Shield Bugs are another great Mediterranean insect. They resemble the crest on a sheild and come in many fantastic designs. Even the females are cool, with beautiful egyptian looking eyes.
Lastly , Snakes and Weasels were popular pets in Ancient Greece for rodent control.
The snake species I included was a Mediterranean Sand Boa. Look at these adorable, little guys!
💕🐍
Alright , that's the little Mediterranean Animal menagerie! 🦋🐞

A sketch of Andromeda as a princess in the far away lands of Ethiopia 🌴🐉🍇
In history, there is much debate about the ethnicity of Andromeda. Hailing from Cepheus and Cassiopeia, king and queen of ancient Aethiopia, this story originates from 700-800 BC , around the time that Greece expanded trade in Africa
Here is an ancient depiction of Ketos , Perseus, and Princess Andromeda. (You can see the ancient greek letters are scrawled on there by a pottery artist who didn't know how to read, but tried their best!💕)
ΠΕΡΣΕΥΣ, ΑΝΔΡΟΜΕΔΑ, and ΚΕΤΟΣ.
I based my sketch jewelry on ancient Greek golden wreathed called στέφανος, 'stephanois'. They were based on natural things like leaves and look like they would rip out your hair.
I would love to see more art of Andromeda in a geographically correct style! My version was an attempt at making her look both Greek and Aethiopian. 💕🐍
Alright! That's my history rant! Hope you enjoyed!

Here is a fun sketch I did inspired by the ancient snake goddess of Greece.
Many say that this beautiful goddess from Ancient Minoa could be the basis for Medusa. Μέδουσα meaning queen or protector.
The snake goddess has also been said to be inspired by Ishtar:
This mysterious snake godess had two sisters, just as Medusa has Stheno and Euryale.
There are many similarities between the tale of Medusa and the Ancient snake goddess of Minoa. However this is just one of many theories out there, and we will never know. 🐍💕

Absolutely love these designs! Phobos and Deimos are my favorite Greek brothers!
SOoo Phobos and Deimos, I finally finished with these bad bois (affectionately)
Sons of Ares and Aphrodite, loyal to their father on all his wars, spreading chaos on battlefield, while Deimos appears to influence dread and terror on men before the action, Phobos scares them off, spreading panic in the middle of the battle, so I wanted visually to make them yet different looking even though people prefer them making pretty alike, since they are usually pictured to be twins.
I just think they are neat :)
I bet, Ares is proud father
