(This post contains manga spoilers so fair warning!)
I hate to make another ranty/ramble post, but this fandom makes me several levels of angry it's hard not to.
So, I really don't want to tell people who they can or cannot like when it comes to MHA, and I'm not going to, but to a certain point your dislike for a character is just...lack of basic reading comprehension.
This is concerning Bakugou, which I can completely understand why some don't like him, but a lot of these statements that people parade around as legitimate reasons to hate him are just, not true. Or stupid. Which to be fair, you can hate a character for stupid or petty reasons, but I'm also allowed to call you out on it.
Sorry for that tangent but, these people acted like Bakugou kicked a puppy, or murdered a baby. He's worst offense is literally being a middle school bully and an asshole in high-school. That's it. He's not going to get the Zuko level redemption arc people expect him to get.
My man's literally got impaled for Deku, I don't know what you all want from him. He apologized. He calls Deku Izuku now, he admits if you're extremely arrogant all the time it gets you nowhere. Again you can hate him for any reason, it's just...weird to me.
The argument he got no character development always makes me laugh, because in my honest opinion (and I will admit kind of pretentious,) it seems like a lack of critical thinking skills. He's changed in so many ways, but since his core character is the same (what makes Bakugou BAKUGOU,) people try to pretend he hasn't changed at all. It's like if these people aren't spoon fed his entire arc, to them it just doesn't exist. And in some cases it IS spoon fed to them. Literally admits he was rude and not a good person. Read between the lines! Think for 2 seconds!
Not to mention I found out some people think he's irredeemable because when he was 14 he said a shitty comment. A comment so irrelevant if you took it out, it wouldn't change the plot. Izuku didn't even have a reaction. He just shrugged it off and basically called Bakugou an idiot. You all have to remember, the manga was first made in 2014. So Hori probably just added it for shock value. Let's stop pretending it was as big of a deal as the fandom makes it out to be.
Ok, now I'm done. If anyone wants to add anything, feel free. I will admit this was just a rant, but I can't be the only one frustrated about this!

the thing about deku is that dudebros hate him until he's doing something stereotypically GOAT-worthy like acting like a badass and evading the law and not letting his emotions slip through and it's like... yes. he did do that. he does do that. and that's probably why dudebros latch onto him nowadays because they want to be him, especially because so many of them think that deku and ochako and/or other female characters are destined to be together (through entirely shallow reasons) — but they miss the point.
his inability, or rather his lack of desire to, unlock deeper, more vulnerable, more selfish emotions is not because he's the so-called GOAT, the pinnacle of the sigma grindset bullshit masculinity by hiding his feelings and getting results in an edgy, emotionally unavailable way. no. it's because he cares too much, not too little. he cares so strongly, so aggressively, so softly, so painfully, for the people around him. he's the idealistic version of a hero because he cares, more than anyone, to the point where he'll break his body to pieces. and he projects those emotions outward so much, he doesn't leave any of that care for himself. he chooses not to address selfish thoughts and moments because he's not the one who deserves them. which is why even when he was in his super edgy, dark vigilante look, he was motivated not by anything superficial like money or success, but his own powerful feelings towards helping others. deku is, through and through, a deconstruction of the stoic, apathetic, violence-familiar, strictly goal-oriented view of toxic masculinity. he fights and kicks villain butt because he cares. he also cries and breaks down and smiles and loves with all the warmth in his heart because he cares.
and i think it's really funny that even when deku is "the GOAT" for his surface level grindset outlook, he's still just deku. the deku dudebros would complain about for crying too much and being a wimp is the same deku as the one who selflessly defeated villains during his vigilante era. he didn't "man up" and do a total 180 mentally, he just happens to have layers to his emotional ineptitude. it fucking rocks. not like dudebros would have the brain capacity to understand that, though

Gonna be honest with you all, a lot of the ships you proclaim as "toxic" is just...a refusal of acknowledging one of their characters development, projection on the "victim" and acting like they don't forgive them, and also just overall hatred for one of the characters.
It's also seems really popular to throw around the word abuser/abusive, which a majority (if not all) of the time is just completely wrong.
No, love, Bakugou is not, nor ever was abusive. Neither was Catra. It's not cannon that this conversation happened, but Bakugou did in a spinoff manga talk to Uraraka about how he ignored Deku, which...makes a lot more sense. I don't know why we thought he was his regular bully when that was never stated. He didn't acknowledge him til the first episode because he was angry about him applying to U.A. If you think some blonde kid being a dick when he was 5, and then sometime in high-school, makes him abusive, you're an idiot.
Catra being abusive don't even make sense. At least with the misunderstanding with Bakugou and Midoriya's backstory, I can see why maybe people can say abusive (if we just ignore that Bakugou was a literal middle schooler, lmao.) But Catra? That straight up does not make sense.
Catra and Adora were enemies, fighting on different sides of a war. I find it weird how people somehow interpret that as abuse (although I do see that none of you have the same sentiment about Entrapdak, I wonder why!) They were literally just enemies. They were mutually beating eachothers ass.
It's like if these people don't have a Zuko level redemption arc, people won't accept it and throw a hissy fit.
Sometimes, ships will have nuanced dynamics and the characters within them won't have a happy, sunshine fairytale backstory! Almost like how conflict is literally a major part in storytelling!
Apologies for this EXTREMELY long rant. This post focuses mainly on Catradora and Bakudeku, it can apply to a vast majority of other "toxic" ships.
