A big THANK YOU to everyone who came out to the Soul Clap Poster show opening. It was nice to meet so many people that have been looking at these posters for years and had such kind things to say about all of the work. It was also the first time I've been able to look at all 47 posters together and it was a wild feeling to see 10 years of my life on a wall.
The show is up in the gallery at TV EYE in Ridgewood, NY until April 19th.

-10 YEARS OF SOUL CLAP & DANCE-OFF POSTERS
-Featuring the artwork of Phil Ashworth
-TV EYE - 1647 Weirfield St. Ridgewood, New York

I did one of these shows back in 2017 when we had only been at this for 3 years and had about 15 posters but now after 10 years and 47 posters in total, Jonathan Toubin and I decided it's time to get these babies back up on a wall for round 2. The poster shows kicks off at 7pm, March 22nd at TV EYE followed by live music from Joe Bataan and then all night dancing with dee jays Jonathan Toubin and Tenosh.

The 17th anniversary bash for the Soul Clap & Dance-Off is upon us, folks! A big aspect of this project, outside of the party turning 17 this year, was that this also marks the 10th year that I have been doing this gig. It was a pretty wild feeling to wrap up the 47th poster in this series and think back to the first one I ever did; It's pretty weird and a little embarrassing for me. And you'll all get to see it up close and personal soon enough..wink wink.
The poster went through quite a few revisions and eventually it was decided that using a previous likeness that I put together for Joe Bataan's Elsewhere show in 2018 was worthy of a 2nd treatment, just with an updated setting and a redraw of Joe so I could see where I've maybe made some improvements.
The big bash goes off on Friday, March 22nd so get those tix while you can!

Did a little poster surgery recently for a Sun Ra Arkestra show that took place at Ridgewood-based venue, TV EYE, back on January 19th. I had done a drawing of them for a Soul Clap & Dance-Off anniversary show back in 2018 and due to short notice I was unable to draw up an entirely brand new poster and had to pull from my old drawing. I initially traced out the band from the older poster and then created a brand new background with text and then just copy and pasted them on there in photoshop.
I really tried to squeeze in their singer, Tara Middleton, because I felt bad I left her off last time due to time constraints and feeling overwhelmed at the idea of fitting every single member in there and unfortunately, time won again. But, I did go back after I submitted the job, and did finish the drawing of her and placed her in the poster (it's not great and probably better I ran out of time). But it did make me stop and notice how much these posters have changed in the 5 years since I last drew a poster for the band. Sometimes you lose track of change when you are so in the thick of things but it was nice to see them side by side and notice that things have improved on them, at least in my opinion.

Some mysterious messenger has struck again and in my duty to document important moments in small town history, I have illustrated the infamous "Sex Bench" again but with an updated message. I would love a message for every season but who knows how long I'll have to wait for them to return to this sacred spot.

The 15th annual NY Night Train New Years Ball is upon us and here is my new poster for it! You'll notice in some process pics there is already a poster with Kid Congo Powers that I am using for reference. Well, last year, Kid was scheduled to headline the party but had to back out last minute due to an injury. He's all healed up and back for the party this year so I created a new background with new information and just slapped the drawing of him from last year's poster onto this one.
It was a bit tricky, color-wise, working on it without a central figure this time but I think I got it put together ok. I stuck with the pink and green elements that I pulled from the Gun Club classic, Fire of Love but wanted to add some elements that referenced another one of their albums: The 1984 classic, Las Vegas Story.
This baby will sell out so get those tickets asap ----> TICKETS!

New poster I recently whipped up for Shayaya, a wild new comedy experience coming your way at Brooklyn's Bell House on January 5th.
Had a lot of fun working on this one, and like my Swamp Dogg poster, I've really been enjoying getting to incorporate the neon sign work I do for myself into my client work.

Back in 2022, the fine folks at Pizza Kat Pizza in Portland, OR reached out and asked if they could use the drawing I did of a street cat on an abandoned motorcycle in Athens, Greece for a small run of t-shirts for their shop staff and patrons. Well, after a change of address and some confusion, the shirt finally landed in my hands.
I drew this back in 2016 and I love that people still reach out to me about it. It's probably one of my favorite drawings that I've done and it's pretty fun to see it on a t-shirt after just living on a page in a 7yr old sketchbook.
The shirts are sold out but if you do live in Portland, I recommend you stop by their spot anyways because I see their pies on instagram all the time and they look damn good.

Drawing the Things I Want To (16-18)
16. Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. 4 x 7"
17. Paris, Texas. 4 x 7"
18. Tears for Fears "Everybody Wants To Rule the World" 4 x 7"
After I heard the news that Paul Reubens passed away I had a crazy urge to draw a scene from Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and I almost immediately landed on the scene where Pee-Wee and Simone are hanging out at the Cabazon Dinosaurs. While I was working on that drawing I decided I wanted to do a couple more drawings of pop culture moments where the famous roadside attraction appears. Like my neon road sign series, I think this series will also just continue along when I have the time to add to it.

I wrote and illustrated the great Halloween novel of 2023 a few weeks ago and my hand is finally regaining feeling in it. The Haunted Hop is returning to Knockdown Center on October 31st with a heavy duty line-up of headliners (Kembra Pfahler of The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black featured on the poster) and more cover band action than you've seen before. Get those tickets asap because this baby is gonna pack out.

New one for the Tav Falco & Panther Burns show/Soul Clap & Dance-Off at TV EYE on September 29th. Enjoyed the simplicity of the color scheme, which gave me some time to play around with the hair detail and attempt to give Tav Falco's face the appearance of actually looking fleshy. I've really been enjoying keeping the central figures on the Soul Clap posters in black & white lately. I've been doing the gig for close to 10 years and I still feel like I'm keeping it fun and new for me, even after 60+ posters at this point.

My Newest Soul Clap & Dance-Off poster for Jonathan Toubin's gig at the Brooklyn Bowl in Nashville on July 22nd. I decided that even though I've used Tina Turner a few times already on these posters we had to go with her since she recently passed away and Tennessee is her home state. Plus, she is just the Queen and one of my earliest childhood music memories so I'll always find an excuse to draw her on one of these posters.
More and more I've been trying to make these posters mimic the heyday of color/black & white soul revue posters while still crafting them in the way I like to. This one got very close to some diy kinko's cut and paste flier or zine. I've done close to 70 of these posters so I'm continually trying to push myself to keep the process fun and change them up enough so people don't get bored of looking at them. This feeling is usually fleeting but, this poster is one of my new favorites.
