Point proven.
I'm harping. I know. But... Bryke honestly thought this was a romantic moment and someone actually agreed. I...I can't.
Tumblr media
WHY isn't it Aang's job to keep himself under control?????? I hate everything about this!
Katara's role in this is the worst part of everything. Katara has to put herself in physical danger to get Aang to calm down is awful, but the fact that Aang only calms down for her? Isn't his whole deal supposed to be that he doesn't believe in violence as a solution to any problem? If that's the case, then why doesn't he work on actually mastering the Avatar State on his own terms? Why isn't that a goal for him at this point? If being angry at one of his closet friends is enough to set him off, then what happens when it's some arrogant Fire Nation soldier or an Earth Kingdom noble trying to fill a power vacuum?
What happens if it's Katara making him angry?
Katara is human and imperfect. She has issues with parts of Aang's character, too. What happens if she pushes him too hard on his flirtations with his groupies? What happens if she upsets the NorthernWater Tribe's 'peaceful' takeover of the Southern Tribe? What happens if she challenges Aang on his treatment of his children? What happens if she tells Tenzin he can have meat if he wants it?
Aang's control of the Avatar State (and by extension his temper) should be his responsibility. Not Katara's.
Explain to me how this is romantic. Explain to me how this is fair to Katara. I don't even give a crap about Aang's character development at this point. They screwed Katara over to give Aang exactly what he wanted, and somehow thought it was a good idea to realistically portray how that would work out for her.
Aang in the main series has a tendency to be selfish, myopic and self-righteous, but he at least had some potential for growth in the first season and a half. The back half of the series and the post-series canon just go on to make him the worst possible person to have his powers. And-this part still boggles my mind- they did it without any clear sense of irony or self-awareness. How do you accidentally make a villain this loathesome? Or is it just loathsome to people who care about women?

Ravenclaw is becoming the most unpopular house. When will our glow up be? Where is our uprising, our revolt? When will we be more than just book nerds?
Where are my people who dance at 3am because sleep alludes you because the brain won't switch off? My maladaptive daydreamers who sometimes wonder too far into busy traffic? My artists who paint on the walls because they got sick of being limited to a square canvas? My eco friendly punk rock anti government's who love life so strongly and the worst thing they imagine is a boring existence in an office, being sucked into the rat race and being told constantly what to do? Where are my people who laugh to fill the silence because the quiet is painful and much louder? The people who cry because life is beautiful and every pebble, flower, tree, bug and grass are so wonderfully intricate?
Where are my people who never stop daring to dream and stay curious? Where did they go? It's too quiet here and I miss you.

Season 3 is for the overthinkers. The ones who always had the crush but were never the crushes. The ones who only see flaws when they look in the mirror. The ones who throw themselves into books because those worlds treat them better than life ever has. The ones who are just so goddamn tired.

Fic Snippet!
“Are you out of your mind?” Zuko rushed across the courtyard and bore down on Aang with an intense, almost palpable fury. “Do you know how badly you could’ve hurt her?”
“I was just…I didn’t mean to-“ Aang stammered.
“Fire is not a toy!” Zuko bellowed at him. He turned to Katara, examining her for injuries. “Are you okay?”
“I’m alright,” she assured him, her voice shaking. “I’m fine.” She was trembling visibly, and there were singe marks on her clothes, but she otherwise seemed unharmed. Zuko turned back to Aang, how was looking down at his feet in shame.
“What were you thinking?” Zuko demanded.
“I don’t know,” Aang mumbled, kicking at the ground. “I was…mad.”
“About what?” Zuko was absolutely bewildered. “What could Katara possibly have done that you thought it was a good idea to do that?”
“Nothing,” Aang admitted sullenly. He didn’t say anything after that. Zuko glowered at him, took a few deep breaths to quell his own anger.
“You’re going to clean this mess up,” he said gesturing to the torn up stones, dirt and cooling lava. “Then you’re going to do 100 fire squats. Then you’re going to work on your forms for an hour. And I don’t want to see so much as a curl of smoke out of you. You’re not responsible enough for fire. Understood?”
“What? That’s not-“ Aang’s protests died on his lips when he saw Zuko’s expression.  He huffed, kicked at stone, and finally nodded.
“Get started,” Zuko ordered through clenched teeth. He turned back to Katara, who was watching the exchange. She was still shaking a bit. Zuko draped his arm protectively around her back and guided her away. He glanced back once more at Aang, and almost rolled his eyes when he saw the younger boy still moping at the ground. It was hard sometimes to reconcile the awesome might and eminence of the Avatar with the reality of Aang, the child.
“I’ll be back,” he warned Aang. “Have this mess cleaned up. And don’t even think about asking Toph to help.”
I know canonically, the Lava Fissure Incident takes place while Zuko and Sokka are rescuing Hakoda, but I wanted to have Zuko see and react to it. Personally, I think it was another accidentally accurate depiction of how unready Aang is to be the Avatar. And it is also another incident that the narrative decides not to call Aang out for, so the chances of him growing from it are...well, we all know how things turned out in LoK.

Katara: Hey, Zuko, are you a painting?
Zuko: ... no?
Katara: Oh, really? I wanted to pin you to a wall later.
Suki: Thank god, I thought you were gonna say you wanted to hang him-
Aang: Wait what?
Toph: I mean, she could, just a little differently, that's all
Sokka, running in from the other room: TOPH, I SWEAR-

I've seen people try to argue that while Katara and Zuko have a close friendship, Katara could never trust him enough to be in a romantic relationship with him. And the thing about this is that I think we are really underestimating here the amount of trust Katara would have to put in Zuko to even be an ally to him, let alone a friend.
Katara's hurt is so great that there is no possibility of her having even a casual relationship with Zuko if she was not assured that he no longer believed any of the things he previously believed about her people or the other nations, and no longer would act on those beliefs. Their entire relationship is built on not only Zuko's redemption but Katara's belief in his redemption, which the show spends quite a bit of time building. The reason Katara was so angry at Zuko when he joined the gaang is because she did not trust and believe that he had changed, and she needed that convincing to even allow herself to be around him.
That's why the renewed interest in calling Zuko a colonizer to discredit zutara does not ring true. It seems to actually diminish the choices Katara made to trust Zuko, to paint Katara's trust in him as undeserved. Which actually undermines Katara's pain in a misguided attempt to "protect" her from it because then everything Katara does from the Southern Raiders onward, every moment where she confides in Zuko and expresses care towards him and fights alongside him, becomes a moment where she is actually not a person making a choice to trust Zuko. It reduces her to a victim in a relationship that she actively invested in and assumes that her forgiveness of him was either insincere or coerced.
And the problem with that is that in canon, Katara's relationship with Zuko is actually a healing one. Her forgiveness of him is essential to her finding closure for not only the pain he caused her, but the pain of the loss of her mother. That is why she explicitly chooses to forgive Zuko and not Yon Rah. The closeness she has with Zuko following this choice is a result of her decision to seek healing and accept Zuko's help, and to give him what help she can. She does not forgive because she is morally obligated to, but because she chooses to and wants to.
And this process actually began long before Katara forgave Zuko. It began in the crystal catacombs when not only did Zuko apologize to Katara, but Katara apologized to him. Because seeing Zuko as someone like her who was in pain was part of her way of finding healing for herself. That's the thing that is missing when people insist that there is forever this unbridgeable gap between them. That Katara herself sought to close that gap as part of her healing process.
That also was a large part of why she felt betrayed by him in book 3. Which means that reconciling with him was an essential part of finding closure. Katara could not just put up with Zuko. She could not be an ally or a casual friend. She had to be sure that there was mutual trust between them, and she had to feel it.
She would accept nothing less from him than mutual respect and trust. And I don't think she would accept anything less if their relationship became romantic.

Okay I’ve only watched the first two episodes of Atla live action and I’m already getting strong Zutara vibes from how they frame these two as diametric opposites. I would laugh so fucking hard if the reason Bryke left production was actually because Netflix was like “We’re making Zutara endgame” and they just rage quit 😂😂
