THANK YOU!! I HAVE THE SAME THEORY TOO ABOUT KAI AND OVERHAUL BEING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT 🙏

Chisaki Kai and Overhaul are different people.

I just noticed that this:

Is like, the only time we see someone address Kai as his actual name, straight up to his face (other than Mirio later lmao).

The look of emotion in his eyes as Pops calls him by his first name, is a mix between adoration and expectation, he’s waiting for the approval he’s been wanting for who knows how long.

Which is only to be replaced with:

As Kai realizes that Pops doesn’t approve of his actions. (Disappointment, perhaps sadness? That he didn’t receive the reaction he wanted and planned for)

He did everything for Pops and so when he doesn’t give the reaction that Kai wants, he’s ‘forced’ to you know, do it to him. He gets upset, literally clenching his fist in anger, shaking for the sheer intensity of it. Using Overhaul. On Pops. (We know he doesn’t have to take off his gloves if he literally gets upset enough to not bother taking them off)

Which is why that man ends up like this:

It’s my theory that the fact that Pops called him by his name (Chisaki Kai, a personal thing to him that we see he gets upset at others using) here is why Kai goes by Overhaul from here on out. (He doesn’t yet have the jacket he’s known for, nor is Chrono wearing his plague mask, because Kai isn’t yet in power here in this flashback)

He feels guilty for what he did to Pop, so he’s abandoning the name Kai, because Chisaki is the one who hurt Pops, not Overhaul.

As long as he isn’t Chisaki Kai, then he can stay delusional in his belief that Pops approves of his actions and will be proud of all the things he’s doing to restore the Yakuza.

It’s like this.

I used to love being called Cal, I grew up with it as my nickname. No one ever used it sure, but I dreamed of someone calling me Cal. So when I met someone who called me Cal, i was happy to finally have someone address me as such. But then they got really mean, and Cal began to have a very negative connotation. I began to loathe the name Cal because it reminded me of them. So in order to bring comfort back to me, I just went back to my real name, that’s why when people began to call me Yoshi, I was relieved to no longer be ‘Cal’. Because Cal was someone that certain people didn’t like, the name was ruined for me, and I never want to be associated with it again. Cal was someone who was hurt constantly and hated themself. Yoshi is happy and has friends and is appreciated and loved.

Kinda like that? Using a different name in order to forget the past connotations associated with the past name?

Understand?

“How dare you refer to me as that name? I abandoned that name a long time ago.”

Overhaul says something similar to that right? How dare Mirio call him the name that Pops once did, especially to his face. He doesn’t want to be Chisaki, he doesn’t wanna be the man who did that to Pops, he wants to remain as Overhaul, the capo with a strong team and duty to the Yakuza and cleansing the world of hero syndrome.

He doesn’t want to get rid of quirks. He wants to control the market around the production of the serum and finished product. Selling it at high price to people who will do anything to get it = Getting money from both heros and villains, that’s a good business, a good way to get the Yakuza back into power. The control over the money, market, serum, and product? Good business.

But Pops has morals, despite everything, he doesn’t really mind that the Yakuza aren’t that big anymore, he’s just content to (…?)

But Chisaki wants to make the Yakuza into the big powerful gang it was when he was growing up, it’s his self endowed debt to repay back the family he was welcomed into. Kai is shown to be living off the streets after an unknown incident (though if you’ve read my other posts you’d know I already have multiple theories about his childhood). He’s grown up with this particular gang for quite a while, since ~10 years of age to whatever the hell he is now (at least 10 years, at least).

He’s been toughened, he’s grown up in a place w/o proper familial care and a good role model in his life. Despite everything, it’s still a gang after all. Without proper attachments to people, growing up with men who think emotions are weak, and many many more things that most likely were wrong with his childhood. So it’s no surprise that Kai doesn’t know when to stop.

Pops is shown to have a daughter, (Eri is his granddaughter after all), which means he at least knows to how to have a relationship with a woman, or really anyone, as all the members are still ultimately loyal to him even after he’s been made bedridden.

Overhaul gets his followers out of fear and debt, Pops got his by respect.

There’s a difference. And Kai cannot understand it. He clenches his fist, and he does what he has to so he fan continue doing what he thinks is right. He abandons his name and the guilt associated with it, and becomes Overhaul. His quirk. He IS his quirk. He thinks that he’s nothing without it. It’s why he freaks out (and begins to rapidly slap his hand against the ground like a child when something doesn’t work) when Aizawa temporarily erases it:

He’s afraid of losing Overhaul. Nighteye himself even says so.

They don’t know that Kai was planning on making a quirk destroying drug AND an antidote for it. They (rightfully) assume that he just wants to rid the world of quirks, that must be why he’s making the drug right?

Wrong. He’s doing it so he can create a market for it using the available resource provided to him (Eri) he has made a use for a otherwise really harmful Quirk, (literally she killed her father yall, by accident or not her quirk still did that).

Just like how Kai uses his quirk to help the Yakuza, he thinks it’s best to use her destructive Quirk like he does his own, to help the Yakuza. Regardless of morals or emotions or anything, he can cast that all aside for Pops and the Yakuza. (Really sad that Kai was never really taught that his quirk could be used for good, just like Eri’s. If all he saw his quirk as was something bad, why would he think a quirk so similar should be able to be used for good either?)

He doesn’t fear or hate quirks, he fears losing his own. He fears losing Overhaul because Overhaul is strong, Overhaul has power and control, and Kai, doesn’t.

Chisaki Kai is a helpless man who craves approval from his father figure I order to make up for the lack of attention and affection he didn’t get in his childhood.

Overhaul on the other hand? Overhaul is now gone.

There’s no more power. No more control. No strength. Only weakness. Only Chisaki Kai.

It’s very symbolic that his villain name is his quirk, ain’t it?
