What is happening means that us around all the world humans love each other but the governments don't want that.

Mahmoud Darwish, Memory for Forgetfulness: August, Beirut, 1982 (trans. Ibrahim Muhawi) [ID'd]
on context: "[set during] the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon and the shelling of Beirut [...] Memory for Forgetfulness is an extended reflection on the invasion and its political and historical dimensions. It is also a journey into personal and collective memory. What is the meaning of exile? What is the role of the writer in time of war? What is the relationship of writing (memory) to history (forgetfulness)?" (source)

I felt so angry seeing these men with their trucks and guns drive up and threaten a Palestinian farmer, one of the gentlest men I have ever met, who just wants to work the land—that his family owns—each day.

Refaat Alareer, If I must die, written in 2011, published online on November 1, 2023
If I must die,
you must live
to tell my story
to sell my things
to buy a piece of cloth
and some strings,
(make it white with a long tail)
so that a child, somewhere in Gaza
while looking heaven in the eye
awaiting his dad who left in a blaze—
and bid no one farewell
not even to his flesh
not even to himself—
sees the kite, my kite you made, flying up
above
and thinks for a moment an angel is there
bringing back love
If I must die
let it bring hope
let it be a tale
(transcript by the American Friends Service Committee)

the idea of protests being violent and unsafe has always felt alien to me, and it's a myth most propagated by people who never go to protests, or people who have a vested interest in delegitimising protest. at every protest I have been to, there has been a palpable spirit of radical care that can only come from thousands of people gathering to express solidarity. there is a safety and peace inherent in being surrounded by thousands of people who know how to loudly and radically care about people across the boundaries of acquaintance. who else would form a barrier around you to protect you from a cop? it comforts to surround myself with others who also feel forever changed by what this genocide has revealed to the world, and are willing to fight against it, in a society full of apathetic people who are content with the status quo.
