Great post from @minnesotahistoricalsociety this week leading into the Gophers’ game at Michigan. We’ll play for the Little Brown Jug, originally left in Minnesota in 1903.

Bronko Nagurski’s legacy is still going strong in his hometown of International Falls. The Koochiching County Historical Society includes an annex all about Nagurski. Bronko was already a legend playing for the Gophers 1927-29 before going on to a prolific NFL career with the Chicago Bears, and then a pro wrestling career. He settled back in the Falls and lived a quiet family life there until his death in 1990.
Pictures above (L-R): Bronko statue outside the musuem; artwork done by Jeff Johnston and purchased in notecard form by one of the OAG admins at the museum; picture of Bronko displayed in the lobby of a hotel in the Falls.
Pictures are not supposed to be taken inside the museum, so go visit to see more! The gallery contains a lot of great photos, replicas of posters and other artwork, information about Bronko and items that belonged to Bronko.

Former Gopher Lindsay Whalen isn’t the only player returning to Williams Arena tonight. Lynx teammates Sylvia Fowles (left) and Seimone Augustus (33) have also played at the Barn before, for LSU in 2004. Whalen and company have their WNBA Playoffs home games on campus starting with tonight’s semifinal opener.

One of this account’s favorite people, Bruce Smith, died 50 years ago today. He is buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, as he was in the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II.
The current Gophers honored the 1941 Heisman Trophy winner on Sunday.
