Rewriting Fate - Chapter 3
chapter 2 > chapter 3 (you're here!) > chapter 4(in progress...)
word count! 2.5k+
warnings! none a/n: guys i might need to forget tagging anyone on this one, it's saying i have too many words AGHAG, and ALSO renamed the series!! more short and simple
Tumblr media
You had closed your eyes a while ago.
The puppet looked over your sound, peaceful face with curious doe eyes. He didn't understand what you were doing, however, you had not seemed like you were in any danger or pain so he had let you be.
Reaching a slim hand out, he hesitated before gently brushing a hand against your cheek. Your mouth twitched, and he reeled back, clutching his hand against his chest with wide eyes watching your every move.
Shuffling around, your head turned slightly more towards him-- allowing him to see you more closely. He relaxed his shoulders.
How bizarre, he thought. Why had he gotten the urge to do such a thing?
Pressing his palm to his chest, he could sense the power that ran through his body pulse rapidly in his chest. It fluttered wildly under his synthetic skin.
Shuffling closer to you, he placed his thin veil over your form. Laying back as you were, he faced you.
Rummaging around he pulled out the trinket that his m-- his creator had left with him before she had placed him in that unfamiliar-familiar place. It was cold under his similarly frigid fingertips, the gold glinting under the faint moonlight as if it was mocking him.
Unwillingly, the corners of his lips twitched into a frown as he looked into the stars that reflected off of the feather.
You mumbled something incoherent.
He jolted at the sound, looking away from the golden ornament to you. His gaze drifted to your hand, which had moved closer to him, limp in the grass.
Swallowing, he clutched the feather tight as his free hand inched closer toward yours. Your fingertips brushed against his own and he froze. Your hands were much warmer than his. His tense gaze darted from hands to your face, hands, and to your face again.
To his dismay, it was twisted into a slight grimace, your brows knitted together tight. It was an expression that made his chest twist and churn. He didn't like the feeling, he decided.
Unsure of what to do, he slid his palm over your hand-- trying to replicate what you had done in his 'prison'.
His fingers clumsily wrapped around yours as he hoped that his visible joints wouldn't bring you any discomfort. Looking up from your intertwined hands, he watched as your face relaxed.
It brought a strange fuzzy feeling within him that he couldn't quite understand. His shoulders sagged as a small smile blossomed against his lips.
It was alright. He would ask you what it was once you were awake.
Tumblr media
A soft tickling of what you think is a breeze against your face was the first thing you felt as your eyes fluttered open.
Clear blue sky greeted you as you adjusted to the brightness of everything around you. Groaning at the new-found stiffness that you could feel in your back, you close your eyes, going to rub at them only to realise one of your limbs had already been occupied. Your grogginess dissipated in an instant.
Turning to your side, you're immediately faced with a flash of bright indigo and a curious porcelain face. Your bewildered eyes flicker to your hand that Kuni was grasping onto before looking back up at him.
"Are you alright?" Kuni quietly asks you, examining you intently. "You are looking at me strangely."
"I... sorry, did I accidentally grab your hand while I was sleeping?"
You go to move your hand, however, the distressed expression that he was giving you and the subtle way he gripped down made you think otherwise. You relaxed in his grip and his face eased into one of content. Kuni looked back up at you.
"No, I did." Your brows raised at his bluntness. "Your face was all scrunched up. So, I put my hand around yours, like you did before, to make you all better again and it worked."
"Oh, did I?" You couldn't recall having a nightmare whilst you were asleep, but then again -- dreams came and went too quickly sometimes to remember. "Thank you."
"It's alright." His face lit up at those two words before he paused and looked at you quizzically. "Is sleeping another human thing?"
Your eyes widen. Right, you remembered, Kuni did not need sleep to function. You clear your throat.
"Ah, yeah. We need sleep to work properly." You amusedly watch him listen, hanging on to your every word. "It's another necessity for us. Helps our bodies regain energy."
Tumblr media
The puppet did not know why you kept on referring to humans as... 'we' and 'us' and not just 'Humans'.
It was all a bit confusing to him, but he found that he liked it. Liked it when you spoke to him as if he was a human just like you... He wished to be a human just like you. But... maybe in your eyes, he was already one.
'More human than me.' You had said. Something flutters inside his chest at the thought.
A hand waving in front of his face jolted him out of his stupor.
"Helloo... You still with me?" You chuckled at his wide-eyed expression. "You've been staring at me quite a lot recently."
He nervously bit at his lower lip, remembering that he had watched you 'sleep' all night. He diverts his attention away from you to the sandy beach, watching the waves wash in and out.
"Oh... then, should I stop?" He asked. "Is it a bad thing to do?"
"No. Well, not to me at least."
His head perked up at your peppy response, eyes darting back to a sheepish expression on your face.
"Other people may think it's a bit rude though." You explained, running your fingers through the veil that you had noticed. "Just make sure the person you're staring at is comfortable with you doing so."
He bobbed his head with enthusiasm, at the sight of your smile. "Alright."
Eventually, tired of simply waiting for something to happen, you stood up. The puppet watched as you lifted your arms above your head and reached for the clouds, flinching as your body made that nauseating cracking sound once again.
He'll never get used to the strange noises your body made, he thought.
You sighed heavily as you looked around the area.
"Well. None of this seems familiar." You finally spoke after a few seconds of blankly observing your surroundings. "Guess we better start walking until we reach someplace... or meet someone, I suppose."
"Meet someone?" He asked you, with wide eyes. "Who?"
You laughed nervously before shaking your head. "Anyone who could help us."
"Why would we need help? We are fine are we not?" He furrowed his brows.
"Well, yes -- but what if it rains...? Or... we get attacked? Sleeping outside is quite dangerous, you know." You pointed out, handing him back his veil. "Plus, it's a bit chilly."
He blinked. "I'll protect you. I don't need sleep."
You spluttered, a sound akin to a horrific mix of both a laugh and a cough coming out of you as Kuni fretted over your hunched form.
"Did I say something wrong?" He asked, and you panicked at the corners of his thin lips that threatened to twitch downwards.
"No... no. I'm just being a bit silly." You shook your head adamantly, having regained reasonable composure. You continued to explain. "And... you could -- but I don't want to see you get hurt if something goes wrong."
Bright indigo eyes fluttered as he tilted his head to the side.
"Oh. I understand."
Your lips spread into a grin. "Mhm. Now let's try and find some civilization. There should be a town or something near here."
Taking his hand in yours you headed along the shoreline. Kuni staggered a little behind you before swiftly catching up, walking beside you -- curious about where you would lead him now.
Tumblr media
Despite your valiant efforts, you could not for the life of you find where the town was. It shouldn't be too difficult to find if you were looking at the in-game layout of Tartarasuna Island, but for some strange reason, everything seemed to be blown multiple times out of proportion.
Perhaps the in-game environments were sized down for the player's comfort. You couldn't imagine how vast Sumeru might be since this island was "big" to you now.
It was getting darker and colder as the sun slowly dipped under the horizon once more, the whole day going by quicker than you had anticipated it to be.
You shivered as you rubbed at your arm with your free hand. The thin clothes you had on were not doing you any justice against the chilly breeze that drafted across the shore. You envied Kuni right about then, the male looking absolutely unaffected by the drop in temperature.
Kuni looked your way, brows pinching in confusion. "Why are you shaking?"
"It's a reaction humans have when it gets c--cold. It's supposed to help the body warm up a bit, but as y--you can see? It's n--not very... sufficient when I've got n--nothing else to heat m--me up." You attempted to speak through your chattering teeth.
The puppet frowned at this, before realizing he could help in some way. He lit up, tugging his veil off of him and gingerly pulling it over your shoulders. It wasn't something like a thick blanket, but it helped block out some of the icy wind that the Inazuman sea brought in.
"Is this okay?" He searched your eyes for approval. "I don't feel cold, so you can have it."
Nodding, you gratefully clutched the veil closer around you. "Much better. Thank you."
Immediately, he fawned at your thanks with a closed-eyed smile. "It's okay."
When you glanced over to the horizon, the last sliver of light from the sun was beginning to slip behind the long stretch of sea. You turned to Kuni with a weak smile.
"We should probably start l--looking for somewhere safe to rest tonight. I know you d--don't feel the cold, but I sure do -- so preferably somewhere that'll sh--shield us from the wind."
Kuni nodded obediently and began to search around. It was not long before he found a secluded little opening in one of the stone cliffsides that were scattered around the island. It's a bit smaller than the cave you had found the domain you found Kuni in, but it fitted both of you.
It's not a tight fit, more of a snug one as you sit with your back pressed up against one of the stone walls and the veil pulled up to your chin. Kuni leans up against the other, gazing over you almost like he was awed. You lift your brow at him.
"Are you alright?"
He blinks at you like he had just snapped out of a daze, before averting his gaze to the ground, seeming a bit sheepish. "Yes. I am... just shocked that I was able to leave that place. I thought that I would have to stay there forever."
"The domain is pretty and all but I think I'd go insane if I had to stay there forever." You retort, grimacing at the reminder of the state you had found the male in.
Deep violet eyes flickered back, catching your eyes again. He looked confounded. "But then, why did you want to go back so badly...?"
You scrunched up your face in thought before coming to a vague confession.
"I was... expecting someone to be there. Someone who could help."
Kuni's shoulders slumped at your response. "I still don't understand why we are in need of help. Who were you expecting?"
You sucked in a sharp breath, thinking of what to say without exposing too much of what you knew.
"That's--"
A strange yet warm glowing light flickered over the opening. It blinds you for only a second before a deep voice calls out, making both you and Kuni freeze.
"Is someone there?"
The voice was familiar.
The veil slides off you as you swiftly shuffled out from the nook you were huddled in, making your way out of the opening. A trembling cold hand suddenly wrapped firmly around your wrist.
Your head whirled around to find Kuni on the other end, desperately staring up at you. Shaking his head quietly, he lightly tugged at your arm. Come back inside, his wide eyes seemed to say. Don't go.
Kuni was scared.
(Scared that you'd get hurt. Scared that you'd leave him.)
Your eyes softened and you tapped the hand that was holding so fervently onto you.
"Come with me then?" You asked in a hushed tone, watching his reaction carefully. "You can protect me if things go bad."
You were sure things wouldn't go bad, you were sure who the person was. But Kuni didn't. You had to coax him somehow, since leaving him alone for a bit was not an option that he would be willing to take.
Kuni bit his lip nervously, as if in thought before hesitantly pulling himself up and taking the veil with him. He loosened his grip on your wrist, opting to hold your hand instead.
"... Yes." He whispered back. "I will protect you."
You smiled wryly at how his voice trembled as he spoke. "Of course."
Turning back, you followed the warm glow in the near distance, Kuni trailing your every footstep like a lost puppy. His hand remained tightly gripped around your palm as you both neared the light.
The closer you get to the light, the more visible the man gets and the more sure you are about who he is.
It's a tall, well-built man in a dark navy haori, the faded white fabric around his shoulders and under holding his sleeves up and tight. His dark hair is gathered up into a high bun, a widow's peak prominent on his forehead. The man's face seems kind... worried as you grow closer, Kuni still following behind you. It's Katsuragi. He looks exactly like he does in-game. Thank... the archons, you guess. The strange familiar blue glow of the pavilion is also near.
You must have gotten to him after he had reached the domain. You hoped that Katsuragi finding Kuni outside of the domain did not hinder the story too much.
"Are you alright...?" The samurai you know is Katsuragi asked, lifting the lantern closer to you. "Oh, you have someone else also!"
As the light from the lantern fell over Kuni, he shuffled a bit more behind you, eyes wary yet curious as he peeked over your shoulder.
"Ah..." You faltered, realising you had not figured out what to say after you had met Katsuragi. You hadn't expected to meet him so soon, and so suddenly nonetheless.
"You're both wearing interesting clothes... and you, the one standing behind them... that fabric seems so expensive... Just who are you two?" Katsuragi mumbled to himself, eyes darting from you to Kuni.
Another gust of wind blew over and the small flame in the lantern wavered. You shivered. Both Katsuragi and Kuni had noticed, their faces growing concerned.
"No matter." The samurai turned to face you, resolute. "Your clothes are most definitely unfit for how cold Tartarasuna's nights can get. Let me escort you both to our village. It's not so far from here."
"T--thank you."
You just about fell over from relief.

Tumblr media
You've been sitting in the pavilion for quite some time now, idly talking to Kuni.
The breeze that drafts through the floorboards made you shiver as you watched him fiddle with the veil that surrounded him like a halo. You remembered that Katsuragi, the samurai who you knew would introduce Kuni to the people of Tartarasuna, would come upon this domain and rescue him.
When would he arrive though, you find yourself wondering.
It was known to you that Kuni had stayed within the confines of this stunning prison of a pavilion until he had lost all sense of perception. It seemed as though you had found him merely days, maybe even hours after Ei had 'graciously' put him to rest in this Domain. So... how long would you have to wait in this place...?
You may be able to feel and cry like him but you knew that you were not like him in all ways physical. Kuni did not have the need to eat or sleep... drink. You on the other hand-- had silly little necessities you needed... You really didn't think this domain had a bathroom.
A familiar sound of your stomach pulled you out of your thoughts. Ah.
You sighed in annoyance and Kuni looked up from his veil bewilderedly.
Curiosity filled him as he scanned around the area. There was nothing around but you and him, only the slow breaths of wind that sometimes tickled his nose and maybe the occasional creak of the domain's walls. He was positive that he, himself hadn't made that sound either, so...
He looked at you with wonder.
Was it you?
The growl happened again, making him jolt a little and he watches your face twist into a grimace.
It was definitely coming from you, he deduced.
"Was that you who made that sound?" He asked, tilting his head. "I did not know humans growled."
Feeling your face burn up in embarrassment, you laughed to shake the shame away.
Of course, how could you have forgotten? Kuni had never been around humans before he was introduced to Tartarasuna so there was no way he could have known that it was just your rather ravenous stomach telling you to eat.
"No, we don't usually growl at each other." You pointed to your stomach. "My stomach just makes that sound when my body needs food."
Kuni perked up. "You need food?"
"Hahh... Yeah." You nodded sheepishly. "It's been a couple of hours since I've last eaten anything after all."
Kuni stood up so suddenly, startling you as you peered up at him. He seemed as though he was trying to find something, you figured. After a few moments of scanning the domain, however, he ended up glazing down at you, looking disappointed with himself.
"I do not think there is any food here... Sorry."
Shaking your head, you're quick to refute his apology. "You don't have to be sorry! Don't worry."
"But... don't you need to eat to survive?" He looked like a kicked puppy and your heart squeezed in pain.
"It's not like I'll die from not eating for a bit, it's okay."
Standing up, you stretched your limbs, a bit stiff from sitting in the same position for so long. Your joints pop a bit from the movement and you let out a breath of air, feeling a bit more energised. You finally go to turn to face Kuni but find yourself not having to do anything as you feel him tightly latched onto your arms looking distressed.
Why had you made that sound? He thinks as he frantically checked your limbs.
It wasn't the growl of hunger that you had explained to him before, no. It was more like an awfully brittle crack of bone that sent foul shivers down his spine. He had just met you... you couldn't be broken in his presence already!
"What was that sound...?!" His terrified indigo eyes met your own startled ones. "Are you broken!?"
Oh.
You can't believe you've forgotten again. He really doesn't know the common knowledge about human anatomy.
Actually... You don't think he knew anything about the human body in general. Tears start to well up in his eyes again at your silence as he starts to assume the worst. Shocked at the sudden change in demeanour, you hastily explain to the poor soul.
"No, no, no, I'm not broken, it's just another silly thing that our body does. I'm completely fine." You placed your arms on his shoulders and squeezed gently. "See?"
He appears to calm down a bit with your reassuring touch and you make a mental note to yourself on educating Kuni on how the human body works to avoid these kinds of situations in the near future.
"Oh." His shoulders relaxed beneath your hands. "Okay."
"I think I'll have to take a look outside seeing there's nothing here for me to eat." You let your hands fall to your sides. "Do you think you could stay h--"
"NO!"
Kuni's hands grasp at your clothes once more and you jerk at the touch. His eyes widened at his actions as if he didn't expect himself to do such a thing. He did not want to be alone. Not again. Not now that you were here.
"I mean...!" Petite arms cling onto you like a lifeline, wrapping tightly around your torso. "I will come with you!"
He's already attached himself, you think blankly. But you still hesitantly wrapped an arm around him and pat him on the back.
"... Alright." You finally speak, reluctantly.
His eyes lit up.
You were too weak against him.
Tumblr media
"So these are lavender melons, huh..."
You hold the purple fruit up to your face, examining it from angle to angle.
A perfectly smooth purple skin, you notice. No imperfections whatsoever. You lift it up next to the fairly distant figure of your new companion. It matches his colour pallet, you muse.
Pulling it back towards you, you take a whiff of the fruit, disappointed with the lack of smell that possibly could have given you a clue on how it tasted. Would it taste like one of your world's fruits? You always were curious about what the in-game food and strange fruits of Teyvat would taste like.
You took an experimental bite.
Eyes lighting up at the explosion of sweetness on your tongue, you now felt painfully aware of how hungry you really were. Quickly you devoured the rest of the fruit, watching as Kuni carefully collected the rest of the melons from the tree in his veil.
The content smile on his face never fails to give you whiplash whenever you face him, but you think it's a good look for him. You had only ever seen him with a smirk or frown in his official art as the Wanderer or Scaramouche.
Almost as if noticing your stare, Kuni clumsily lifts the bundle of lavender melon in his arms turning back to you. You walk over to where he stood, making sure you avoid the fallen, decaying fruits on the ground.
"Is this enough for now?" He asked.
You nodded and find yourself being graced with another tooth-rotting beam.
"Yes, thank you." You said and he preened at your words. "Let's head back to the pavilion."
Good thing you found some food close by, you think to yourself.
Despite playing the game for so many years, even you can't remember the whole layout of Inazuma and now with Kuni who trailed after you like a lost duckling -- you cannot afford to get lost.
For the sake of both of you.
The walk back was peaceful, the sound of waves lazily lapping against the shores could calm down anyone's nerves. Humming, you look back at Kuni - his eyes trailing longingly across the horizon. Following his gaze, you could only grimace at the sight of Tenshukaku.
The puppet blinked as he felt a warm hand wrap around his own cold one, tugging him along gently. Looking away from his previous abode, he noticed that you had grown much closer to him than he had initially realised.
You smiled at him and he gripped the fruit-filled veil closer to him, managing to do the same to the one that you had been holding-- tenderly squeezing your hand in return.
He smiled back.
Tumblr media
It would have seemed that luck was definitely not on your side in this world.
Too busy making sure Kuni wasn't upset, you had completely forgotten to keep a close eye on where you both were going and as a result, you and he now had no place to stay. It didn't help that it was nighttime either, the darkness making it hard to spot the landmark that had led you to the domain.
Tired of mindlessly walking, you decided to sit near the water. You could only hope the weather stayed clear for the time being.
"Are we lost?" He asked, spreading the veil between you two.
"No," You paused before heaving a sigh. "... Yes."
"That's okay."
He didn't care about leaving the domain behind. Now that you both had left, it held no purpose to him.
However, he couldn't understand why you had been so adamant about getting back to the place where you had found him. You seemed rather averse to the idea of leaving the place before, as well.
He wrinkled his nose.
Had you liked it there that much?
On the other hand, you were stressing as if your life depended on it.
How on Earth (Teyvat) would Kuni meet Katsuragi now?

“... Who’s there?”
His raspy voice echoes around the room and you wince, head against the wall barely hidden underneath the window.
(You wonder how long he had been weeping before you found him.)
Only just a few seconds ago did you duck down after you made direct eye contact with the one… character? Person? Person, you dedicated hours to.
Leveling him up, ascending him, pulling for his damned weapon (even after losing it to Itto’s claymore), maxing out said weapon… You practically gave him the luxury Genshin treatment. Your face falls knowing how much real-world money you had to spend for this man.
Heartbeats thud deafeningly in your ears as you hear a shuffling of fabric and then an abrupt thud. Shoulders jerking, your poor heart leaps to your throat at the sound.
Hearing nothing but stillness and the sound of your unsteady breaths for the next few moments, you begin to grow worried. What if he fell over? Hurt himself? You remembered that since he's only just been 'let free to roam' by his creator — that was but a small while past his initial creation.
At this thought, you find yourself making your way into the darkened hallway.
Sure enough, he still lay there, albeit in a more crumpled manner than you last saw him in. Dark hair splayed out around his head, his veil discarded beside him. Alarmed, you rush towards him, kneeling at his side as you hover over his form.
A hand grasps blindly at your clothes, almost going limp as the prototype lifts his head. You freeze.
"...Why are you here?" He finally speaks, voice almost a whisper. You lean in a bit closer to hear what he's saying.
You let the silence linger for yet a second before responding, just as faint as he did. "Well, I heard someone crying and I..."
Your voice trails off. What did you even think to achieve, in following his cries, walking into this domain?
"I wanted to help...?" It comes out more like a question rather than an answer because, to be frank, even you didn't know why.
You hope that he doesn't ask you to elaborate because you don't believe you could give him a proper answer.
His eyes meet yours again, miserable and muddled. A look, much too innocent for who he will become... and what he would begin to execute thereafter.
Unsettled by your thoughts, you fidget under his gaze.
"Why do you wish to help... me? I don't even know who you are."
Your heart sinks at his question. What were you meant to say?
‘Oh, it's nothing! It’s only because I know your entire backstory, and character and have read through your wiki an unhealthy amount of times.’
You'd rather eat your foot.
Reluctant to scare the traumatised doll once more, you attempt to smile at him and gently took the hand that is so tightly gripped at your sleeve.
"You don't have to know someone to want to help them." You hum, making yourself comfortable in front of him. "Plus... Who says we can't get to know each other now?"
Looking down at him with kind eyes (you hope it comes off that way), you tilt your head. "What's your name?"
(Kunikuzushi? Scaramouche? Wanderer?) He pauses, his eyes wavering and breaking away from yours.
"I do not have one." His voice breaks, along with your heart.
You have to restrain yourself from spilling what his mother had wanted for him, that she never left him with the intent of abandoning him, never wished upon him the life he was destined to experience.
(Fate can be cruel but Gods can be even crueler, you felt.)
"That's okay. I don't need to know names to get to know you." You hum, gently squeezing his hand. "Is it alright if I ask you what happened?"
The forlorn expression quickly morphs into a face of heartache. The hand that barely clutched back in your hand tightened ever so desperately around your own, and you narrowly hold back a wince at the suddenness.
"My creator... My mother left me without saying a word." He croaked. "She didn't stop to look back at me once."
You sadly watch as he fruitlessly attempts to hold down his tears. Tears that had led a god to deem him too vulnerable, too fragile to uphold such a title as 'The Raiden Shogun's Puppet.'
You reach over, putting your unoccupied hand on his shoulder. Feeling it shudder and quiver with every concealed cry, you see his watering eyes flick over to you.
"It's okay to cry once in a while." You say. "It's only human."
He furrows his brows.
"But," He spoke in hushed tones. "I am not human and... I do not own a heart like you."
(Oh, you knew. But at this moment-- you think he feels more human than anybody else.)
"Well I think... you seem to be very human. Maybe even more human than me."
(The dam floods and shatters, taking him along with it but he holds onto you for dear life and... and you let him. Your warmth is a sharp contrast against his cool hands and face-- though it is ever so comforting as you wrap your arms so tenderly around him.)
(He feels safe.)
Tumblr media
You decide to give him a name. In your head, of course, you didn't wish to give him a name that he did not choose.
You call him Kuni. For now.
Speaking of which, he had stopped sniffling quite some time ago and was now sitting up-- studying you with blatant curiosity. You sweatdrop under his fixed gaze but you're glad he looks much calmer than when you first found him.
"You never told me your name." He suddenly speaks, making you jolt a bit.
"Ah... Did I not?"
You tell him your name, with slight hesitation.
You know you probably shouldn't interfere with his past, despite how badly you long to push him on a path to a better... happier, content life. You also know that it most definitely would change, a lot. Of things in the future.
You didn't want to risk that.
He echoed your name, looking more content as time passed.
"Now, we know each other!" You beam, pleased now that Kuni was feeling better.
He timidly smiles back at you. (It's one so small and gentle, so out of character for his present self as ‘Scaramouche’, 'The Balladeer, the 6th of the Fatui Harbingers' and 'The Wanderer' -- you could die happy knowing that you made him smile.)
"Yes, we do."

Rewriting Fate - Prologue
Prologue (You're here!) > Chapter 1
warnings? a little curse here and there, otherwise none
— In which you get isekai’d into your gacha hell, only to get sent to the past. A past where a doll dons a more innocent spirit.
Tumblr media
(You have no idea what just happened to you or what you did to end up here, but one thing’s for certain… This isn’t your bedroom.)
One second you were on Genshin Impact, going about your weeklies and crossing off your commissions in Inazuma. The next you’ve blacked out (which you don’t remember doing so), head spinning as you come to, bleary eyes greeted by a cloudless starry sky.
With the shock yet to hit, you’re left gingerly cradling your throbbing head as you collect yourself from the grassy floor.
“What the hell… Just happened?” You mumble to yourself, eyes flickering around to attempt to gain at least a little grip of your surroundings.
A few arm lengths in front of you, waves of water lap gently against sand, the shore stretching out as far as your eye could see before it curves off into the distance.
You grimace.
Alone. Lost. Confused. On an unknown island? That was a thriller movie in the makings if you’ve ever heard one.
What was even better was that you could hear the faint sound of someone crying. Soft… barely-there sobs of mourning echoed from within what looked like a cave you hadn’t noticed before. An otherworldly glow seemed to flood out of the wide opening, blanketing the surrounding rocks in a sheen of blue.
“...ome… ba…” The voice being too faint to hear, you failed to catch a single word.
As much as you absolutely hated the idea of someone else being on this island with you, a twinge of guilt in you stopped you from getting up and leaving to wherever else that wasn’t… here.
With a controlled sigh, you began to head over to the disembodied cries, frowning when they weren't getting louder the closer you moved towards where you thought they were coming from.
Reaching the opening in a few long strides, you almost fall over as you inspect the contents of the supposed cave.
Your breath catches in your throat as you realize what you are looking at.
“There’s no fucking way.”
(A… domain? Were you dreaming?)
You hastily slap yourself on the face, albeit a bit harder than you had anticipated. Cursing and pressing a tender hand against the stinging pain, you quickly determine that you are… definitely… not dreaming.
Redirecting your attention back to the domain, you notice that the doors swing slightly ajar. Your expression sours at the implication it brings.
Since nothing was here but the domain, the crying seemed to be coming from inside the domain, in which the domain’s doors are open… You sigh, shifting nervously from foot to foot. This person was either beyond the door, or you were dealing with a rather quiet ghost.
Well. You had only one life so you should live it to the fullest right?
(No, you lummox. You don’t just jump into the nearest magical door because you want to spice your life up.)
As you make your way closer to the doors, they appear to automatically start opening up wider, allowing you to see into the limitless starry vacuum you had always found staring back at you as you did your artifact runs.
(The sorrowful weeping grows louder and louder and you decide to put curiosity over hesitation. Whether that was a good idea or not, you were about to find out.)
Closing your eyes tight and setting your face – you step into the domain.
Before you have a moment to regret everything, almost immediately you hear the doors close behind you with a feeble clunk and (thankfully) a solid floor graces your feet.
Slowly opening your eyes, you’re faced with a beautiful Japanese-inspired interior, sunlight (or more like what you think is sunlight) filtering through bright vermillion maple leaves. It spills out onto the brittle hardwood floors, filling the room with an ethereal glow.
The place is intricate and… and oddly familiar to you.
(Perhaps it could be a one-time domain? You think to yourself.)
You usually forget them over-time, so you wouldn’t be surprised if this one was as well.
“No… Come back… Come back…” You flinch, finally remembering (and hearing) why you were here. “Why did you leave me…?”
(The voice is one that you’ve definitely heard before. But where from? Who was it? And why was your chest twisting and churning ever so painfully?)
You follow the whispering begs to a passageway next to the room. Carefully clambering over a steady wooden container you deemed fit for kneeling on, you peer into the hallway through a paneless window.
You almost fall off the box in shock.
(It’s… Kunikuzushi. Scaramouche. The Wanderer? Either way it’s him and you don’t know how to feel as you watch him pitifully curl into himself, arms gripping onto his sleeves.)
His head is facing you but his eyes are shut tight, a lone tear escaping every now and again, and you think you feel a pang in your chest once more. You can’t bring yourself to look away and.. Oh?
Oh.
Your eyes meet.
(Shit.)
