atla headcannon [sokka]
headcannon summary: when Sokka has a surprise for you
warning: pure fluff and sokka's inability to keep a secret
Dedicated to @mloszi for the countless amount of fics and headcannons I still owe you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You knew it wasn't your birthday, nor you and Sokka's anniversary, but you couldn't help but have the strange feeling that your boyfriend had a surprise you
Given that he was rather secretive and couldn't form complete sentences when you asked him what was going on, your hunch was confirmed: he was planning something for you.
"Sokka, what's going on?" He jumped every time you approached him. He put the utmost focus on whatever he was working on, a conglomerate of items laid out before him.
He would gather them in a haphazard fashion—tripping and stumbling over his own feet to keep his surprise hidden. "Oh, uh, nothing! Nothing at all, Y/N! I swear!" He would say as he turned to face you. It was obvious he was clearly hiding something. He shuffled nervously, hoping his widespread, nervous grin would be enough to change the look of suspicion on your face.
"Is everything okay?" You'd ask and in response, he'd step forward, place a kiss on your forehead and gently urge you out of the tent. "Yeah, everything's fine. Why do you ask?" He'd say, though he would leave you little to chance of formulating a reply as he slung an arm around your shoulders and began to change the subject—updating you on the progress he had on the latest invention he had been working on for the past for weeks.
Although you were more interested in what he was working on in the tent, you didn't press him. Instead, you listened quietly as he shared his ideas with you. You found his intelligence and ability to be inventive and creative to be one of the most attractive things about him.
Later that evening after dinner—which was filled with awkward silences and Sokka nervously delivering his jokes to make you laugh—you pulled him outside into the cool night to find out the truth.
"You've been acting weird all day. Did...did I do something wrong?" You asked to which Sokka quickly seized your hands.
"No," He quickly said, pulling you close. He placed another kiss between your brows. "Y/N, you haven't done anything wrong. It's just me. I just wanted to everything to be perfect."
You lifted a brow as he suddenly pulled a necklace from his pocket. He held it out. Eyes wide, you stepped back and covered your mouth in surprise. "Sokka—"
He wanted everything to be perfect for you, hence why he had been acting skittish all day. Nervously, his gaze shifted off to the side as he struggled to find the words. "Y/N—"
But you cut him off quickly and embrace him. Simultaneously, you both sigh in relief, the weight lifting off both of your shoulders.
"Yes," You murmur quietly as pull back and turn around. Gently, Sokka adjusts the clasps of the betrothal necklace around your neck and you turn back around to find him grinning.
You both embrace then and share a quick kiss. Just as the two of you pull apart, a cool chill runs through you both. You quickly grab onto him and he wraps an arm around you to keep you warm.
"I knew you were up to something," you say as the two of you begin to stroll through the night.
"Really?! When?" He asked, seeming slightly offended at this revelation.
For the rest of the stroll, you laugh as Sokka attempts to convince you that he is the "master" of keeping secrets.

The first time he offered you the job, you didn’t take it.
At the time you were a struggling pro bender trying to make ends meet. You were determined in mind, though naïve in heart. You never thought your career would hit rock bottom. Although your team wasn’t the greatest at the time, you were slowly but surely climbing the ranks. No stack of yuan nor a multitude of shiny satomobiles could convince you otherwise. You weren’t sold on the idea of exchanging your future for a life of crime…even at the expense of your childhood best friend.
“I’ll pass,” You told him with a shake of your head and a smile gracing your lips.
You were well aware of the Triple Threat Triad and what they were all about: acquiring money, claiming parts of Republic City as their own, and wreaking havoc while doing it. It didn’t help that Shady Shin was involved. The once goofy and carefree boy who had a positive outlook on life had become the shell of a hardened man you no longer recognized. The two of you grew apart when your parents found out his family was involved with organized crime. It was only recently that the two of you reconnected by mere chance.
“Fair enough.” Closing the box with a ‘snap’, Shady Shin sauntered back to his glistening satomobile, popping the door open with ease. He slid into the driver’s seat, tossing the box of yuan in the back like discarded trash. “When you want to work with a real teama winning team— you let me know.”
“Not likely,” You said with a bit of ice in your tone, taking offense to that. You adjusted the bag around your shoulders while making your way down the sidewalk. You didn’t spare another glance in his direction except when his satomobile passed you in a cloud of smoke.
****
Months later, you found yourself on that same corner of the street. Though this time you weren’t going for a leisurely walk, but instead looking for your next big break. The Rhino Lions—the name hadn’t been your idea—had little to no chance of showing what they were made of. Night after night, your team was succumbing to the harsh reality of losing more than winning. Tensions rose, and the pressure got too great for the three of you. Eventually, the team disbanded, leaving you with untethered friendships and little to no income.
You struggled to find a new team to join or a quick way to make money, for you had trained your entire life to be a pro bender for the Rhino Lions. It was all you knew. It didn’t help that you were living on your own, forced to rely on yourself to make ends meet. With a frustrated sigh, you turned the corner. Just as you continued on your walk, you heard a voice call your name and the approaching hum of a satomobile.
“Y/N, wait.”
You kept walking, shoving your hands into the pocket of your jacket as you looked straight ahead. The sound of a door closing and feet jogging in your direction made you quicken your speed. But it didn’t take long for him to reach your side. He slowed down to a walk, mimicking your posture as he shoved his hands away in his pockets. With each step, he sauntered forward as if he were skating on ice.
“So…how about those Rhino Lions?” he said, a smirk lacing his features.
Offended by his comment, you shoved him in the arm. He chuckled, raising his hands in defense. You caught the glare of his silver watch glistening in the sunlight.
“Still a touchy subject, I see.” Shady Shin shrugged. “I guess that means you can take me up on my offer, Y/N.” He slipped his hand back into his pocket and pulled out a stack of yuan, waving it in the air.
“I’m not interested in organized crime, Shady Shin. You know that.”
“I’m not talking about that offer.” He came to a halt, shoving the currency away. Although he seemed relatively carefree, you couldn’t help but notice how he nervously tapped his foot against the cement.
You lifted a brow and eventually came to a stop.
“I was thinking of Kwong’s,” he said, after clearing his throat a couple of times, though maintaining a confident and charming smile on his lips. He shrugged, kicking a pebble that was nearby. “Take it or leave it, Y/N.”
You lifted a brow, shocked by this proposal. Although it hadn’t been the first time he asked to sit down with you for dinner to catch up, you still found yourself flustered by the question.
“Kwong’s…that’s pretty expensive,” You noted quietly.
“It’ll be my treat,” he said too quickly.
You mulled it over, rubbing your chin as if you were in deep thought.
“What’s the catch?” You asked.
“Catch?” He put a hand over his chest as if he were offended by the question. His hand briefly covered up the gold chain that hung around his neck. “There’s no catch.”
You studied him a moment before looking down the street that was starting empty. The sun was rising. You knew that long after the sun had gone down he’d be off preparing for another turf war.
“We haven’t had time to catch up, anyway. So, what do you say? For old time’s sake?” He jammed his thumb towards his fiery red satomobile, waiting to be taken for a ride.
It didn’t take you long to be convinced. After months of worrying about your next move, you believed you deserved a night to temporarily forget about your financial troubles and catch up with an old friend.
“Yeah,” You said, a small smile rising to your lips. “Yeah, okay.”
Shady Shin smirked and strolled suavely back to his automobile. You followed a few steps behind. He opened the door for you and you got in. You ran your hands over the side of it in wonder.
You had never been in a satomobile before.
Climbing into the driver’s seat not long after, Shady Shin made the vehicle roar to life. He hummed and eventually jolted forward.
With the same confident smirk lacing his lips, he turned to you and said, “Hold on,” before stepping on the gas. The two of you propelled forward in a flurry of dust and smoke.

Mako x waterbender reader
Tumblr media
Prompt: You accidentally get burned while sparring with Mako.
Words: 1,055
Warning(s): fire injury, Fluff, Mako being overprotective
****
Mako warned you that this was a bad idea but you didn't listen—you were convinced that he was only saying that in an effort to brag about his firebending abilities. You were well aware he was only being protective of you, but you were determined to get in some extra practice before your next match. You were skilled at maneuvering your way around earth discs and powerful bouts of water, but when it came to the element of fire you always froze, resulting in your team forfeiting a win.
When your constant pleads and puppy dog eyes didn't do the trick, you incited a sparring match yourself and sent a fistful of water towards your boyfriend without warning. On instinct, Mako reacted with a blazing wall of fire that dissipated seconds after he let his hand fall to his side.
"Y/N, I'm serious. I don't think sparring is a good idea. You could get hurt," he said. He crossed his arms and drew his lips into a thin pursed line.
"Just one round. Please? I need all the practice I can get," You said. "I just want to get better."
After some convincing, he eventually gave in only because he didn't like seeing you upset and he wanted to help you in any way he could. So, the two of you engaged in a small sparring session. Sweat clouded your brow as you blocked or dodged every single ball of fire that came your way. You could tell he was holding back for your sake, so you upped the ante in an effort to make things more challenging for you both.
"Y/N…" Mako warned you lightly as he stepped back, only a few inches from falling into the body of water behind him.
A snicker fell past your lips as he stumbled to catch his balance. When he finally stood upright, he looked at you, his warning scowl turning into a mischievous smirk. You took that as permission to continue. So for the next few minutes you two sparred with another, occasionally exchanging playful banter and reluctant compliments on each other's offensive and defensive moves. In between breaks Mako gave you pointers to which you took note of as you two engaged in another round of catapulting  water and fire at each other.
A heavy storm of fire suddenly came your way, mimicking a maneuver that sent you flying into the water during your last match. With gritted teeth and a defensive stance, you did all you could to fight the flames...until something hot hit your palms.
You didn't have time to protect yourself from the incoming hail of fire as you lifted up your hands to shield the flames with a weak ice block. The ball of fire broke through, sending you stumbling into the lake behind you. You fell back, landing on the shallow end of the lake, your hands pressed against the moist ground.
"Y/N!"
You groaned as a premature mist clouded your eyes. Despite being able to heal yourself from minor injuries, you were unable to erase the burning sensation that coated your hands. You bit your lip to keep from crying.
The ground beneath you suddenly gave way as Mako picked you up in his arms, cradling you as he carried you away from the only source that could heal your injuries.
"Mako—"
He raced up a small hill until he set you down on a dry patch of earth. He knelt in front of you, apologizing until he was out of breath.
"Mako. Mako, wait," You said gently as you held out your hands, unfolding them from the tight fists you had them in. Your once fiery red palms began to heal as every droplet of water submerged into your skin, erasing the damage that had been done. Any evidence of you being burned had been replaced with a miniscule scar.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you," Mako said as if you hadn't been burned before during a match; as if you didn't have the ability to heal yourself; as if you were utterly helpless.
He took your hands into his, placing a soft kiss on the backs of them. The fact that he had been the one to burn you broke his heart. You could tell based on the way he squeezed your hands and how his eyebrow furrowed in deep concern.
"Are you hurt anywhere else?" He asked, his eyes glazing over your entire frame in search of any other injuries.
You placed a hand on his cheek, his eyes finally meeting yours.
"I'm okay, I promise. It was an accident. I know you didn't mean to—"
Before you could finish your sentence, he picked you up once more. He didn't put down until he entered the house. He placed you on the couch gently.
"Do you need anything?" he asked. "A pillow? A blanket? I can get someone to come and…"
As much as you appreciated his concern and protectiveness, all you wanted was for him to relax and hold you. You reached out for his wrist before he could leave to supply you with things you didn't need. You two looked at one another until the anxious fire in Mako's eyes dissipated into understanding. He slid beside you and put his arm around you while you cuddled into his side. With his free hand, he inspected one of your scarred palms.
"I'm really sorry, Y/N. I would never—"
"I know, Mako. I know you'd never try to hurt me," You said as he massaged the center of your palm with his thumb, right above the scar.
"I should've known better than to challenge a former Fire Ferret, now Police officer," You said.
He chuckled and shook his head. "I shouldn't have allowed you to get to me even though you have a way of doing that all the time."
He smiled down at you, though his smile was laced with lingering shame and remorse. You reached up to touch his cheek.
"I said I forgive you," you assured him one final time before resting your head on his chest. For the remainder of the afternoon, you two remained on the couch. Mako occasionally stroked your palm while you silently squeezed his hand to assure him for the umpteenth time that you were okay.

Note
imma need a jet x reader with the prompt "I think I forgot what human contact felt like" thank you ma'am.
Author's Note: Not sure if I captured Jet's persona correctly since it's been a while since I've watched A:TLA, but I hope you like the story!
»»————- ♡ ————-««
For a couple months now you ran with the Freedom Fighters. Although you believed in liberation from the Fire Nation’s violent patterns of aggression towards others, over the course of a few weeks, your hatred for the Fire Nation had died down. You realized that raging war against anyone wouldn't do a thing to bring your family back and that all the world needed was just a touch of humanity. With that in mind, you would've left for Ba Sing Se weeks ago—in search of a new life—but there was one person that kept you from doing that.
"Jet."
He looked down at you, a hard look in his eyes that made you want to reach out and hug him. Whatever speech he was making had been lost on his tongue. The entire table went back to their quiet chatter and light smacking, as if they were oblivious to their leader's sudden awkward pause. You both had something in common despite all the layers of brutal hatred and grief he covered himself with. You were aware that he masked his depression well—with a confident signature attitude, a mischievous wink, and a subtle smirk—but you didn't buy it.
Your instincts kicked in before your brain did and before you knew it you were running after him. You knew he was hurting. You knew that at some point he was bound to explode if you didn’t intervene.
You knew that this morning's failed mission was just the straw on the camel’s back.
Your movements were quick, almost cheetah-like as you took one of the bridge paths that sprouted out from the main trunk.
“Y/N, wait!”
You ignored Pipsqueak and The Duke’s pleas for you to stop chasing after him. They were probably used to letting Jet run off to deal with his emotions on his own, but you could no longer standby and refuse to help someone who was hurting as much as you were.
By the time you had caught up to him he was hunched over, his back towards you, hook swords in hands.
“Jet?”
In a swift movement, his hook swords were secured at his side and he reached forward, bracing a hand on the tree’s trunk that was in front of him. His fingers ran across the bark, chipping away at pieces of loose bark that fell to the ground below.
What followed next made you jump.
His hand balled up into a fist and he struck the tree
You didn’t think—you just moved forward and grasped whatever part of him you could before he hurt himself—as if he wasn’t in pain already. He tensed under your hold and eventually his hand fell from the tree and to his side.
“I think I forgot what human contact felt like,” he said, his words coming out shaky and detached. “It’s been so long since...since…”
“I know,” You said. “I know what you mean.”
Eventually he turned around. The anger was still there, though his face conveyed he was nothing but a helpless, troubled kid.
Carefully, you reached out for his hand, the one riddled with bark imprints and dark scars.
“You wanna talk about it?”
You could feel his eyes on you, watching as you carefully brushed away the debris from his scarred skin.
“Yeah,” he eventually said.
You lifted your head, surprised he was willing to talk about it now given how angry he was just moments ago. You were surprised he was willing to share more than you already knew with you. But what surprised you most was when he took your arm and looped it through his, before turning to face the falling sun as it cast its final farewell for the evening.
“Want to take a walk?” He asked. He lifted a brow, parts of him starting to resurface.
“Yeah...yeah, let’s take a walk.”
For the remainder of the evening you both walked through the Freedom Fighters’ vast hideout, arm in arm. With each detail Jet shared of his past and his parents, you went a step further to share your own grief in hopes of making him feel comfortable. By the time the stars made their shining debut, Jet walked you back to your sleeping quarters. After he told you good night, he winked and smirked, the wheat straw in his mouth turning upwards for a moment’s time.
You could tell the talk had helped. He had more bounce in his step—more purpose in his stride as he used his momentum to swing across the wires by the hook of his swords to his own sleeping quarters across the way.
