[untitled poem] (1856)
Don’t believe it, my friend, don’t believe it When in a fit of grief I say that I stopped loving you— Don't trust the low tide, don't trust the betrayal of the sea, It returns to the earth, loving. I'm already sad, full of the same passion, I will give you my freedom again— And the waves are already running, with their opposite noise, From afar to your favorite shores. Don't believe it, my friend, don't believe it, Don't believe it, my friend, don't believe it When in a fit of grief I say that I stopped loving you— Don't trust the low tide, don't trust the betrayal of the sea, It returns to the earth, loving.
— Aleksey Tolstoy, adapted by Pyotr Tchaikovsky in his 6 Romances, Op. 6 (source)

Oh god I don’t know if I could pick one?? I steal little shiny bits and bobs from all my favorites - Neil Gaiman, Ursula Vernon (aka T. Kingfisher), Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Faulkner; those are probably the most repeat offenders. Also poets like Rimbaud, John Donne, Anne Sexton, Plath.

I have always been drawn to art that deals with difficult subjects. That's how you process it.
Reblog if you LOVE fucked up themes and topics in your fiction 🤭🥰🫶

AND ALSO HERE'S THE THING OKAY.
I completely get it if you think your vote for president means nothing and does nothing. I get it. It's not true, but I see where you're coming from. No one wanted a Biden Trump rematch! Not one person on either side wanted this. So if you cannot in good conscience tick a box for either candidate, fine, that's your call.
BUT YOU CANNOT IGNORE THE REST OF THE BALLOT.
You HAVE to vote for your senators. You HAVE to vote for your house reps. You HAVE to vote for your local folks - state house/senate, governor, mayor etc. You HAVE TO VOTE for your local school boards! Even if you don't have kids! These are the people who are going to affect your day to day life. These are where you're going to see a difference.
Protest the presidential vote all you want. But if you ignore the down ballot, you're a shit citizen and you deserve every bad thing that happens to you.
This is the second time in my voting history that I’ve participated in flipping a red seat in Alabama for Democrats (the previous time being my beloved Doug Jones) so it’s always funny to see people turn around and say voting doesn’t matter when I’ve seen it twice in the past ten years flip seats in what is supposed to be safe Republican country. Republicans are digging their own grave with their radicalization and it is making them lose (and with your help we can make them lose harder). Vote.
