#I do think he considers them friends #maybe kaneshiro means “close” as in he never really had an emotional heart-to-heart with the others?? idk #bc he and reo talked abt their parents and had the whole “being with you is fun” and wtv #he and zantetsu had the bath scene #but the closest i can think of for the others is isagi and him duking it out and admitting they're weak after losing bachira #they all get along and enjoy each others company but ig he doesn't consider that particularly close 😭#idk maybe kaneshiro's making that up bc i do love his other friendships :<

I've recently learned that the line "without soccer, he and I could never be together" is actually still Reo’s monologue so the parallel doesn't quite match anymore

(it's not gonna stop me from being delusional)

But the fact that Reo was still thinking of the World Cup when saying they'd have nothing to do with each other, meanwhile Nagi asks Reo not to die before him and treasures the similarity they share... still tells me that Nagi takes their relationship a little more seriously than pre-2nd selection Reo

He says that they're similar because Reo "doesn't know how to measure his distance from others" which tells me Nagi is very aware that he's letting Reo way too close for a guy he supposedly has nothing in common with... he just... likes Reo. As a person. Do with that what you will

What is wrong with them 💀

The cognitive switch the fandom has had to make from "their relationship is one-sided, Reo does everything!" to "their relationship is one-sided, Nagi is sickeningly in love with Reo" is crazy to see -- NAGI STAND UP

(I don't necessarily think that way but I can tell that's where this is headed for ppl 😭)

More from the oneshot:

The implication that Nagi would suffer if he had to live the remainder of his life without Reo... "don't die before me"... i.e. 'do what you want but stay here'... he thought saying it would make Reo happy...

The fact that Nagi thinks they're similar -- much more similar than Reo seems to think they are -- makes their parting all the more bittersweet. It touches on the loner/outcast side of Nagi, to latch onto the first person to really connect with him and I like seeing that major part of his life actually explored in the oneshot. Like him living sparsely, alone, with no support system, is not just a goofy bit, it really does affect the way you perceive the world and your relationships.

I already liked and understood Nagi, but seeing it expanded on in the manga just made me love his character even more,, can we see them succeed and be happy in the main manga now,,, please,,

nothing new here, but it's funny how quickly epinagi goes from strong shoujo coding to typical shounen themes when Reo isn't around to be the heart of the story and bring out the more emotional beats of the plot. So the introspection gives way to much more action-focused scenes, friendship and interpersonal drama turns into typical "believe in yourself when no one else does" shounen power-upping, and the more emotional, idealistic dreaming together switches to competitive fighting against foes with edgy quips thrown around. Alas, this is still blue lock tho, so there's still no power of friendship to save the day. Only hard work! which a slacker like Nagi still adheres to halfway 😂

it's also very telling that Nagi only embraces his so-called "protagonism" only now that he's truly alone :') too bad for his development that the lesson doesn't stick for long, but epinagi's slice of life + spokon peculiar merging always blurred the lines between genres for this manga to ever really fit into either category 100% imho. Which is what draws me to this series more than the og one, tbh

#i know its episode nagi but I need at least one chapter where we see more of reo with kunigami #i want to see him teaming w shidou #WHAT WAS THEIR DYNAMIC I NEED TO KNOW #it's also kinda funny that he adopts this mindset and yet in Manshine he goes right back to thinking “man is this what isagi and reo do?!?#they live in his head rent free
