Pink or Red?
It was safe to say that the little world that Emilia knew had been turned on its head when she found out the two strippers she’s worked with for the last few months, Blair and Mira, were actually undercover cops that had been scoping the strip club.
They looked between each other before giving Emilia a sympathetic look. “We’re sorry we couldn’t say anything sooner, Emi.” Blaze said, tightening the jacket Silver (the silver-white hedgehog) had given her.
“We would’ve loved to tell you sooner, but…” Mina, the yellow mongoose said softly, her red wig having been discarded so her purple hair was free and tumbled down her back. “Work.”
Emilia knew the feeling; knew the difficulty of keeping secrets in order to work silently, having to work under cover.
She didn’t say anything, but she nodded.
“I understand.” Emilia looked out to the flashing lights outside, but something sat strange in her. “Dr. Finitevus was his name, what was he doing that warranted this?” Emilia gestured around to the empty club, and to the squad cars that were gone.
Julie-Su approached a moment after, having heard her question. She stood aside the two, Julie-Su was taller than Blaze but not Mina, the pink echidna looked down her nose at Emilia. Her violet eyes narrowed.
“That’s classified.” It was simple and sharp. Emilia crossed her arms, narrowing her eyes. Julie-Su didn’t give her another chance to say anything, giving a stern glare to Blaze and Mina.
Emilia sighed tiredly once she left. “Is she always like that?” Emilia whispered to the two girls, they giggled to each other softly.
“Yes, the Lieutenant is always serious. She has to be, of course.” Mina nodded.
Cream came up to her then, hand in hand with one of the police officers. Manic, Emilia recognized him. She just hoped he didn’t recognize her.
“Emi, I’m getting a ride from Manic. You can take my car tonight.” Cream handed the keys to her. Honestly, this wasn’t the first time, but seriously?
Emilia didn’t hide the annoyance on her face, but she didn’t say anything either as she took the keys from Cream. Manic and Emilia looked at each other for a moment, a spark of familiarity in his eyes but confusion on his brows. Emilia met his stare evenly, turning away after a moment.
Blaze and Mina looked curiously at Emilia as Manic left with Cream. “Is everything ok?” Blaze asked her softly.
“Yeah. what the hell was that?” Mina placed the hands on her hips.
Emilia waved her hand dismissively. “Sorry, I just know his sister and heard stories.”
“You know Sonia?” Mina asked immediately, Blaze looked a little taken aback that Mina knew who Emilia was talking about.
“Yeah, we work at the coffee shop together. Do you know her pretty well?”
“Well, aside from working with Manic-” Mina crossed her arms and thumbed out the door at him though he had just gotten in one of the unmarked vehicles out front, “- I actually grew up with them in New Mobotropolis when it was still the Kingdom of Acorn.”
A lump started to swell in Emilia’s throat, and her heartbeat quickened. Why didn’t she know Mina? She’s a yellow mongoose with purple hair-- how did Amy miss her?
Emilia tried not to let her smile tighten, but it was difficult. She wasn’t Amy anymore.
“Really? How long did you live there?” Emilia tried to sound polite and curious, but knew she was failing.
“Well, funny story actually. I left when I was 16 to try to pursue a singing career, but then the war with Robotnik hit full force and offered my assistance elsewhere. I just never went back.”
“You’re a performer?” Emilia couldn’t hide the shock from her voice. “That’s why you could keep up so quickly.” She rubbed her chin as it made a modicum of sense now.
Wait. The voice in the back of her head told her. A yellow mongoose that sang and danced. Amy did know her! Emilia just didn't recognize her at first because, well, 10 years can change someone a lot. Thankfully she and Mina never really associated with each other before recently, so there was little chance that Mina would recognize her.
“Yeah, I just did little concerts here and there, had a record deal once but never went back after the war.” She rubbed the back of her head with a blush on her cheeks.
“I didn’t know you had a record deal.” Blaze said finally, eyes curious at Mina.
“Well this has been… a night.” Emilia stretched as the conversation hit a stall. “I’ve got class in the morning so I’m… gonna head out and find a new job, I guess.”
Mina and Blaze shared a look. “We didn’t mean to shut the club down, down. Fiona and Scourge are just… bad people.” Blaze shrugged.
Emilia nodded, knowing that they had been doing… illicit activities, she just never really concerned herself in them. Plausible deniability, right? She also never got involved to try and stop them, either though.
This didn’t sit well with her; Emilia’s only concern was getting through life, living her life and keeping her head down-- she didn’t want to be a crime fighter, she didn’t want to save the world again. She just wanted to… move on.
She shouldn’t be feeling guilty by letting Scourge and Fiona do what they were doing; she knew about the drugs, nearly all the strippers who worked there were on something. Even Cream would partake in something every once in a while, but it was rare.
Hell, Emilia herself had tried something once before (and didn’t like it), but the point is is that this was a seedy part of town with seedy patrons who groped too much, cussed too much, drank themselves shit faced and did cocaine off of Carrotia’s ass.
Emilia, for the first time in a while, felt exposed. She covered her chest a bit more with the towel that had been provided to her by Shadow.
Was this what she really wanted? Would Amy be disappointed in her? Of course there was nothing wrong with being a stripper, she had to remind herself, it was a very taxing profession-- physically and mentally.
It was paying well though, very well. She had been able to pay off her apartment’s lease for the full year up front and keep up with her school fees as well.
Stripping was bill money, the cafe was spending money.
“I’m gonna go now,” Emilia said tiredly, feeling the full force of the day weigh heavily on her shoulders. From running into Shadow this morning, to having the full day of classes, working at the cafe, and then coming straight here to only be met with probably the most physical exertion she’s had in the longest time (it’s not often she has to tackle someone to the ground and then hold them hostage basically, ya know), to feeling like maybe this isn’t enough anymore, and feeling guilty.
“Ok Emi.” Blaze said affectionately, voice soft as she carefully placed a hand on Emilia’s shoulder. “We’ll try to hang out soon, ok?”
She and Blaze had actually become fairly good friends, having had a girl’s day together with her, Mina, Cream, and Emilia herself. It was fun.
She felt betrayed, but knew better since her secret was a bit… more life shattering (her life specifically).
“Yeah,” she smiled like her life wasn’t starting to crumble around her again and had to rethink all of her life choices. “We will, at least now I know why you and Mina were both so busy during the day.” She laughed.
The other two girls laughed with her. “I haven’t had two jobs for years, this was borderline torture. I don’t know how you do it, Emi.” Mina rubbed her neck for emphasis. Emilia smiled softly.
“I like to keep busy.” She tapped her cheek in thought. “Maybe I’ll pick up baking again, I used to really like baking when I was…” she trailed off. Someone else, her inner voice supplied. “..Younger.” She finished off awkwardly.
Blaze and Mina didn’t seem to notice, or they were just being nice and ignoring it.
“I’ll see you girls later.” She waved at them finally, moving to the back room to change, gather her things and leave out the back door, Cream’s keys in hand.
“She’s a little scatterbrained, isn’t she?” Shadow asked them softly as he approached the two, Mina jumped a little as she didn’t hear him approach. Blaze, used to... him, wasn’t phased.
“She usually isn't like this.” Blaze said thoughtfully after a moment. “She bounces off of Cream’s energy, but by herself Emilia is rather subdued.”
“Really? I thought she was kind of intense.” Shadow commented after a moment. The look the two other girls gave him made his eyebrow raise. “What?”
“Intense? Are we talking about the same pink hedgehog?” Mina commented, rolling her eyes. Now it was Shadow’s turn to be confused.
“Pink? Her fur was red.” Shadow was lost now.
“Oh, right.” Blaze laughed, remembering. “No, that was fur dye to help hide her identity a bit better. She has pink fur normally, pink hedgehog’s aren’t as common as red ones.”
“What about Sonia?” Shadow remarked, thinking about how he had literally ran into a pink hedgehog earlier that day.
Mina tapped her chin, “well… Sonia isn’t like peachy pink. She’s more saturated, like almost purple-y pink?”
Shadow pinched his eyelids as he slowly shook his head. “Anyways! She tackled Scourge and apparently held him until Manic got there to cuff him. That’s it, I thought it was intense.” He threw his hands up in exasperation.
“What?” Blaze seemed confused, and Mina mirrored her confusion.
“That doesn’t sound like Emi.” Mina folded her arms again, Blaze and Shadow followed suit.
“Yeah, she’s sweet like a lamb.” Blaze offered. Shadow held up one of his hands then.
“I’ve met a lamb before and they weren’t very nice, so I don’t know how accurate that statement is.”
“I just can’t imagine Emilia.... Fighting someone.” Blaze said softly. “You’re sure we’re talking about the same hedgehog?”
Shadow shrugged. “I don’t know anymore, I don’t even know what her fur color is. How do you even know Emilia is her real name?” He scrunched his nose.
Blaze and Mina laughed at that comment.
-------------------------
Outside though, waiting for Emilia to come out, was none other than Miles “Tails” Prower. Twin tails swishing with worry, goggles over his eyes though his eyebrows were pinched above them, and three little bangs swinging in the late night wind.
At the sight of him, Emilia’s shoulders dropped and the tears she had been fighting off for the last hour or so finally spilled over her cheeks.
“Tails.” She whimpered at him, her legs feeling like jelly as she started to stumble towards him.
“Hey now, I’m here.” He held his hands out to her to steady her as she approached him. “What happened? Are you ok?”
She looked up at him, Tails who had grown so tall and so much and had been so much to her-- he was here now, she didn’t remember why he was here but he was here.
“I-I’m ok,” she took a shuddering breath. “The club is closed, Scourge and Fiona have been arrested, a-and when Scourge was trying to escape out the back here I-I tackled him, fought him down and-and I helped arrest him.”
Her lips were quivering. Why was she acting like this? Why was this such a big deal?
“A-And I don’t know why I’m crying, I-I don’t know why this affects me so much.” She wailed.
“Amy.” His voice was calm, filled with worry but calm as he used her real name. “Amy, it’s ok to be scared.”
It was nice hearing her real name again.

MLC Ch: 4
E.C.P.D
There was a slightly larger crowd than usual, especially for a weeknight, but Emilia-- Rose , didn’t pay much attention to it. Instead, she focused more on the fact that Fiona and Scourge were entertaining the white echidna again, the Doctor as he was known; he came in every once in a while- but more recently these last few weeks.
Rose watched him from behind the curtain where the patrons couldn’t see her, not like they wanted to anyways-- their attention was grabbed by the rabbit on the stage. Carrotia didn’t bother with a stage name for herself, she wanted everyone to know exactly who she is.
Rose frowned at the Doctor; he looked interesting, and she was extremely fascinated by him to say the least. His eyes were an odd gold while what would usually be the white sclera of the eyes was an abnormal black. Rose watched with rapt interest as he slid a small bag of something towards Scourge while Fiona distracted someone else who was sitting with them.
The music stopped and the DJ came over the loudspeakers, Carrotia sauntered off the stage, giving a little emphasis of a tail wiggle right before she disappeared behind the curtains. She was sweaty and red cheeked but looked powerful, exhilarated, hungry . Carrotia side stepped Rose, smacking the hedgehog with her ear as she flipped it over her shoulder, giving the hedgehog a sideways glare as she went to reapply her makeup and perfume.
“Everybody knows her, everybody loves her! She’s the most beautiful flower in the garden! It’s Roooossssse!” she heard her stage name get called over the loudspeakers and took a deep breath, shaking her shoulders and straightening her back, holding her head up high as she presented herself to the room. The spotlight was on her, but no longer did it blind her. She arched her back against the curtain, before strutting out on the catwalk to the beat of some song she’s heard a thousand times over. She couldn’t see into the back of the room, but she could see Fiona, Scourge, and the Doctor up near the front.
Whenever the Doctor was here, he seemed to have a keen fascination for her; maybe it was why she had a fascination about him, too. She dropped to the floor in a split, bringing her legs together after a moment before crawling towards them, putting emphasis into her hips moving and her shoulders framing her exposed cleavage.
Ah, yes. The Doctor was leaning forward, his golden eyes predatory and flashing hungrily, there seemed to be a shine to them. Rose was certain that if there wasn’t a clear barrier between the main stage and the rest of the lobby, he would’ve touched her then and there.
Although Rose didn’t let this fact worry her, it was still a bit disturbing at how little some people could control themselves.
Just as she was within reach of the Doctor, she spun away, sitting on her knees and lifting her quills away to expose the low back of her silver dress. She could hear the whistles and calls, and hear the growls coming from the echidna, she wiggled her tail a little before standing up in one fluid motion, walking back over to the pole and wrapping her leg around it and holding herself up with one arm, showcasing her muscles that she still had.
---------
Cream Puff, also just called Puff, walked around the room, giving lap dances to people who waved more than a couple mobium at her. She spotted Flame (Blair’s stage name) sitting in a silver hedgehog’s lap, her whispering something in his ear as he looked intently at the floor, his hands positioned on her hips but not exploring. When Puff walked by someone they smacked her butt and whistled when they saw how it bounced. Even though Puff giggled and winked, she was jealous of Flame finding someone not openly molesting her.
Puff approached a green hedgehog with fun looking bangs, they were scattered all over his head and he had piercing blue eyes. She sat down on the ground between his legs and smiled endearingly up at him, placing her hands on his knees as she raised herself to be closer to him.
“You look like someone I should get to know better,” she said playfully, batting her eyelashes at him. He chuckled, holding his hand out to her.
“Well, I’m Manic for starters.” She took his hand and kissed the tip of his finger.
“I’m Cream Puff, but you can call me Cream.” She winked at him. He smiled charmingly, and leaned back on the lounge chair he was sitting at, showing off a silver pendant sitting on his chest.
“What do you want to know about me, Cream?” He humored her, and Cream got up and sat next to him in the lounge, draping her legs over his and leaned towards him.
“You have to tell me who does your hair, your bangs are incredible.” She smiled at him.
The doors flew open then, men in armor that had E.C.P.D on the front in bright yellow coloring with guns pointed into the room flooded in. The silver hedgehog that Flame was on had restrained Doctor right before the door busted open. The music stopped suddenly, and everyone’s hands slowly raised in the air.
Fiona approached angrily as Scourge slunk out the back, she stood with her chest puffed out and her hands on her hips and pointed a finger up at the person in the front of the group.
“ What is the meaning of this?” She demanded; the leader of the group took off their mask to reveal a pink echidna with purple tipped bangs and piercing violet eyes.
“Fiona Fox, you and your business partner, Scourge the Hedgehog, are under arrest for housing illicit activities, possession of illegal drugs, moving illegal commerce over city boarders, mobian trafficking, illegal embezzlement of funds, and missing your court date in Station Square.”
“Wha-“ Fiona gasped as another police officer cuffed her, “you can’t do this! You need a warrant to enter this establishment!”
The pink echidna smiled almost cruelly as she showed a piece of paper signed by the attorney general of the city-state that they resided in.
“We have that, also-“ she started slowly, leaning in close and whispering something to her. Fiona’s eyes widened as her face reddened in anger.
“Why you-!”
“Careful, anything you say can and will be held against you in a court of law.” The pink echidna waved her hand and gestured for her to be taken away. Then, her attention was set on the white echidna that was being restrained by the silver hedgehog.
“Someone, go find Scourge.” She called out to her squad, the green hedgehog that Cream Puff was sitting on stood up and jogged to the back room, searching for the other green hedgehog.
“Ah, Julie-Su.” The Doctor said sweetly, smiling as he stared her directly in the eyes, which is impressive seeing as he himself is rather tall. “I was wondering when we would meet like this.”
“Doctor Finitevus, I’m not surprised you’re the supplier.” She said in disdain, looking him up and down before shooting him a glare. “You’re under arrest too, but that shouldn’t come as a surprise to you-- you’ve been evading the police for years.”
He sighed, “and lo, here we are.”
“So it seems,” she stated. Cuffing him as well and leading him out of the building.
“Shadow, take testimony.” She looked to another member, he also removed his mask and holstered his gun.
“Yes Chief,” he nodded, looking into the room. “Please, nobody leave the premises until we are done. Cooperation will make this go smoothly.” He brought out a notebook and a pen along with a tape recorder, approaching the first person.
----------------
Rose had rushed backstage right before the entrance, her instincts still as strong now as they were years ago; funny, how life saving training sticks with you... through life. She saw Scourge rush back, and immediately went to tackle him. He went down hard, grunting as she pinned his arms behind his back.
“Emilia, you dumb bitch, get off of me!” He yelled as his face was shamed on the floor. She growled.
“Scourge, what the hell is going on?” She demanded, “I’m not letting you up until you tell me.”
“The cops are here is what’s going on, now get off me!” He struggled, bucking her off of him as he jumped up and went to run out of the room and out the emergency exit. Emilia lunged for him, dragging him down as she crawled up to him and bit his ear.
Hard.
He grunted, glaring daggers at her. The chill that went down her spine from the glare he gave her felt as cold as the ice his eyes resembled.
Another green hedgehog burst through the back of the club then, his gun drawn. He eyed the two on the ground, nodding to Emilia as he grabbed Scourge’s arm and dragged him to stand up.
“Scourge the Hedgehog, you’re under arrest. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be held against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney-“ His voice faded out as Emilia wrapped her arms around her torso; Scourge had managed to rip her dress away during the fight-- which is what the dress was made for, but it felt like a violation. “-Do you wish to speak to me?” Manic’s voice broke through, and Scourge bared his teeth at Emilia and growled. Manic finished handcuffing him and pushed him out of the back room.
“Miss, please come out here with the rest.” Manic gestured for her to follow him out, and Amy breathed a shaky sigh before following.
The girls were covered in towels, Blair and Mira were talking to the silver hedgehog as he gave Blair his jacket to cover up.
Amy noticed the black hedgehog, and her eyes widened as he was pointed over to her- his piercing red eyes familiar as they connected with her own.
“Oh” so she thought, arms covering what her little bra wouldn’t. “So the chances are pretty high.”
He came up to her, tipped his head slightly in greeting. “Miss, would you like a towel?”
Emilia looked woefully to the side, patrons had been detained and asked to stay, the dancers were off to the side and covered in towels, Cream was talking to a bee police officer but she seemed fine.
“Yeah,” Emilia said finally, her adrenaline still kicking and making her shake. She hadn’t had to use that much energy, or take someone down, in a really long time. She was glad for her instincts and her skills were still sharp enough to do so, but…
He dropped the towel gently over her shoulders, carefully releasing it after a moment. His eyes were gentle and searching as she met his gaze once again for the second time that day.
“My name is Shadow the Hedgehog, we’re here to help. Please, give me your full name and your statements.”
“Emilia Wine,” she sighed, gripping the towel as the shakes were getting worse. “I-I’m,” her voice started to crack and she cleared her throat. “I’m a dancer here, I was on stage when the door shot open, I ran backstage about the same time Scourge did.” She took a deep, shuddering breath. “I tackled him. I knew whatever was happening was because of him and I panicked so I pinned him to the floor. He got the upper hand and got on top of me, ripping my dress away in the process. I was able to attack him again by biting his ear and restraining him until someone found us.”
“Who found you?” Shadow wrote down, his tape recorder next to them on a chair.
She gestured to the green hedgehog. “Him, Manic.” Shadow tilted his head for a second but nodded.
“So, you took him down?” Shadow questioned again, an eyebrow raised in surprise as she paused his tape recorder and put down his pencil. “Do you have some training taking people down or something?” She assumed it was his version of a joke with the way he gave a slight chuckle.
Though... flashes crossed Emilia’s mind in that moment; back when she was still Amy, back when she was still a child forced to fight a war; forced to see so many people die fruitless deaths; forced to detain people; forced to fight for her life for.. For Sonic. Amy was just a child, Emilia is an adult.
“Umm,” she blinked away the tears that started to swell, moving her bangs out of her face as she tried to crack a smile, but... it probably looked like a grimace.
“You could say that, yeah.”

MLC Ch: 3
The Cream of Friendship
Cream usually took it upon herself to drive Emilia and her to work in the evenings, but the first job that Emilia had wasn’t Cream’s. No, Emilia had gotten the job at the cute cafe a couple blocks from her current apartment when she first moved to town and lived on campus with Cream; while Cream found a job at another venue that paid a little better but had late nights, and had convinced Emilia to join her.
This little slice of calm before the storm always prepared Emilia for the nights to come, especially since the later afternoons were easy and closing was a cinch. Emilia worked herself up to be the closing manager while Wave, the morning manager, had been a part of the company for many years and hadn’t advanced any farther than that.
She was only slightly bitter, though Emilia had tried being nice to her every chance they got. Don’t get her wrong, Wave the purple swallow wasn’t mean, she was just… intimidating. She was a tall woman with ice blue eyes that was striking against her dark purple feathers. Though, what seemed to be the most intimidating for Emilia was the flame tattoos that traveled up her arms and disappeared into the sleeves of her shirt.
She rubbed her own arms gently every time she saw the tattoos. They were really cool, don’t get her wrong, but apparently Wave got them while she was in prison for moving some drugs during the Egg Wars , which is what the last long term conflict with Eggman had been dubbed for history. Wave served a couple years before the war ended, but Emilia didn’t want to disclose that she had been a part of the group who had founded the Babylon Rogues operation and arrested them.
Granted, she was a part of the Freedom fighter then, a lot smaller, with brighter pink fur, and quills that stuck up in all directions-- but, it would be awkward, ya know?
Anyways, they didn’t get along super well, and Wave was a decent person trying to find a new way in life and was fortunate enough to get the job she has. Point is: she’s intimidating and Emilia still doesn’t know how to talk to her, even after nearly 3 ½ years at the job.
Cream had joked before that maybe Emilia was bisexual because of how nervous and awkward she got around Wave, and to curb more suspicion Emilia agreed that maybe she was. And hell, maybe she was, she hadn’t experimented yet and have you seen girl’s they’re so pretty.
Emilia shook her head, frowning at her strange train of thought and picked up a box of packaged coffee beans ready to be ground. It had been resealed after she finished stocking the shelves in the back along with the rows in the front of the store, still though the box was rather full.
Emilia picked it up with ease, and Sonia the Hedgehog whistled from behind her.
“It still amazes me how you’re so strong.” Sonia mentioned casually, Emilia hid her blush like she usually had to when Sonia was around. Yeah, Sonia the hedgehog-- Sonic’s older sister, and the only one in Empire City (aside from Manic but Emilia never saw him so he doesn’t count) who knew her identity. It was purely happenstance that they worked together, in fact it was Sonia who interviewed Emilia when she first arrived.
Sonia had been more than willing to keep the secret, even helped Emilia get the job.
“Well, ya know.” Emilia shrugged, Sonia knew but the others who worked regularly with Emilia knew of her second job.
“I bet, you’re the backbone of that place, Emi.” Jian, the white tiger said moving past the two pink hedgehogs. Jian was the tallest member of their establishment, but she was rather quiet and mostly lingered some days as she was the store manager.
Jian was very excited when she found out Emilia was a stripper, much to Emilia's own embarrassment.
“Jian, the other dancers are very good, too.” Emilia chastised, stamping down the blush rising in her cheeks.
Jian laughed easily then, taking the box out of Emilia’s hands. “C’mon, Emi, you’re the only one I’ve seen do flips in the air and land like a fairy in those platforms.”
“And stilettos.” She smiled shyly, but seeing the idea behind Jian’s praises.
“Exactly! Emilia, I can’t even begin to describe to you how difficult shit like that is.”
Sonia snickered at Emilia’s shocked face, before the younger pink hedgehog gave an irritated eye to Sonia.
“Oh, right.” Jian’s jade green eyes moved down to Wave, who was in the front wiping down the counter. “Wave, you were supposed to be out of here at 5.”
Wave stalled, giving a slight shrug. “Well, you guys were busy and there was plenty for me to do up here-”
“Get your ass out of here.”
Sonia snickered again and Jian’s eyes moved to hers. Arms still tense from holding the heavy box. “You too, Hedgehog.” Sonia opened her mouth but closed it immediately, smiling at Emilia.
“Good luck tonight, Rose.” she winked. Emilia’s face blushed scarlet at the use of her name, surname and stage name.
Yeah, she wasn’t very creative…
Cream was in front of the cafe at 7:30 sharp, her little red car playing music a little too loud as she sat texting on her phone.
Jian gave Amy a well meaning smile as the two locked up the cafe and parted ways.
“Heads up, Fiona has requested that we have a theme for tonight. Some of the other girls are thinking wild wild west. ” Cream warned Emilia as she slipped into the car, Emilia placed her bag in the back of Cream’s car, having had a chance to stop by her apartment earlier to grab her clothes and drop off homework.
“Gross.” Emilia commented. “Why not outer space?”
“Oooo, that’s good. Dress all sexy with glittery outfits--” Emilia cut Cream off.
“I was thinking more like aliens.” Cream gave the other girl a deadpanned look.
“Of course you were.” Cream pulled out of the parking spot and sped through downtown. “Why not dress like one of the galaxies while you’re at it.”
“You could dress up like the sun.” Emilia commented, Cream scoffed.
“The only light I am is in your life , Rose.”
Emilia’s shoulders tensed at the name. She should’ve came up with a better stage name, honestly.
“I’m thinking of changing my stage name.” Emilia watched the city lights go by as the sky was already dark.
“Whyyyyy would you do that? Rose is so cute!”
Emilia placed her chin in her hand; “yeah, I guess it is.”
---------------------------
“This is not a cohesive theme girls.” Fiona Fox, the wife of the owner and one of the dancers of the club pinched the bridge of her nose as the girls in the changing room had ideas all over the place (thanks to Emilia but that’s not important).
Fiona and Carrotia had committed to the wild wild west ; Carrotia the Rabbit (not related to Cream) was Fiona’s shadow, always following her around, always doing the dirty work or her bidding, basically she was Fiona #2. Fiona wasn’t dancing tonight, but she was dressed like one of the show girls with her corset tightened where it looked painful to breathe, adorned with a little feather in her hair.
Carrotia on the other hand went for the “sexy cowboy” look with assless chaps and a loose fitting cowboy hat.
Blair, a purple cat with a red jewel in the center of her forehead, had an Arabian dancer theme for the evening with a red bra that had gold accents and a similar thong.
Mira, the yellow mongoose that had a red haired wig as a part of her costume, had a similar outfit that Blair had but with blue and silver accents instead of the ruby reds of Blair’s.
Cream went with a red riding hood look; complete with the short dress that wasn’t even considered a dress, and a tear away front of white frills. The red cape was tied daintily around her throat.
Emilia was, as she had suggested before: an alien, though Cream was currently helping put the washable fur dye into her fur as Emilia focused on her makeup. Fiona and Carrotia shot a glare at the pair, seeing as Emilia was usually the one causing mischief among the dancers with Cream to help.
Blair and Mira were usually paired together, which made sense as they were hired at the same time. Emilia and Cream got along with them really well (probably because Cream had great hiding places but that’s besides the point).
“Are you two even done yet?” Carrotia snapped at the two of them. “If you’re not gonna coordinate with us the least you could do is be ready on time.”
Cream looked at the analog clock on the wall above the mirrors and makeup counters. She then gave Carrotia a frown and pointed at the clock.
“We’ve still got 15 minutes chill the heck out.” Cream rolled her eyes and went back to putting the red temporary fur dye in Emilia’s fur. Emilia on the other hand was busy putting silver eye shadow on her eyelids and green lipstick on, when Cream was done with the quills Emilia donned a cute little headband with red antenna on them.
Carrotia, during that time though, was staring at the analog clock. Hard. Trying to read it.
“Fine, fine!” Cream groaned out, throwing down the now empty bottle of dye. Thankfully, Emilia was mostly covered-- Cream didn’t have to worry about certain parts of Emilia. Emilia, instead of being a pink hedgehog, was now a red furred alien hedgehog with a cute silver rip away dress.
Cream shoved her heels on, glittery red things that were 7 inches tall-- taller than Carrotia’s at least, which Cream was more than happy to look down on the other rabbit with most days.
“You curse all the time why do you say ‘heck’ ?” Emilia asked Cream while also putting her own silver boots on, the heel wasn’t as intimidating as Cream's, but they were tall boots that ended above her knee.
Cream smiled at her friend. Giving a small laugh as she said: “Be-because,” she took a breath to steady herself. “Because I don’t fucking like the word Hell. ”
Cream started laughing, and even Mira giggled a bit. Carrotia rolled her eyes, checking her phone for the time as Fiona had gone out to the audience already to introduce the dancers for the evening.
Cream and Emilia stood up nearly at the same time, taking each others hands as Blair and Mira took theirs as well.
“Show time?” Cream asked them.
“Show time!” the purple cat and yellow mongoose cheered.
Emilia nodded, eyes focused on the door way out onto the stage, her heart thrummed like it did every time before she started dancing.
“Show time.”

A standard day for Emilia Wine involved with getting up at 7:30 am during the weekdays, throwing on her leggings and slipping a bra on under her t-shirt, yawning as she made a smoothie and squinted against the bright light and white kitchen décor. It usually involved a thought along the lines of “I really need to redecorate,” sipping a bit of the smoothie as she stretched listening to the news, before slipping on her tennis shoes and grabbing her phone with some earbuds, finally jogging out the door.
Emilia’s first thing in the morning jog was usually the worst part of her day, mainly just because of how early she forced herself to get up. Though it was only an hour and she ran a few miles all together from her apartment down the few blocks to the main park in the center of the city, around that track a few times, then down to the coffee shop that she worked at in the afternoons, and back home-- it was still about 9 miles a day give or take.
It wasn’t a fun experience, especially since she never really enjoyed running in the first place-- though all the years she spent chasing after Sonic toned her for the endeavor, also it was a decent way to stay in shape and up her endurance.
Though, she was doing a bit more these days to stay in shape as well, running was just the easiest to accomplish with her busy schedule.
Today was only slightly different though compared to the rest of her days. The coffee shop was a little busier than normal, but that wasn’t too much of a unique thing. No, it was as Amy was leaving, waving her goodbyes to the sweet Badger girl named Sticks who always worked the early morning shift that while she was pushing the door open she accidentally ran into another body.
See, even though Emilia didn’t look like she had a lot of muscle-- she was still very strong. She ran nearly full force into the other person, heard a grunt and slam from their side of the glass door.
They were a hedgehog like herself, but he had unique coloring (like she did too but that isn’t important); he held his head where she assumed she smacked him in the face with it, and also noticed the coffee cup in his hand.
Her eyes widened as an apology was on her lips, but the sharp look he gave her had her pause. His eyes were a sharp, vivid red, brighter than anything she had ever seen… set against his coal black fur they glowed like embers.
His mouth opened to say or yell or shout or curse or something but she beat him to it. “I’ll pay for your dry cleaning!”
She closed the door behind her as they moved farther from the entrance, he huffed and looked at the blue button down shirt he had. Emilia looked him over, noticing a little swelling developing on his temple but nothing else.
“Here, look at me.” She held her finger up at him and slowly moved it in front of his face. His eyebrows pinched as he looked at her finger than at her.
“What the hell are you doing?” He demanded, his voice deep with a slight baritone to it. Emilia placed a hand on her hip and blew her bangs out of her face.
“Checking to make sure you don’t have a concussion. Now, watch my finger.” He was taken aback, eyes widened as he started following her finger. “I’ve got painkillers with me if you need them.” He shook his head after a moment and looked down at his phone.
“Gah, I don’t have time for this. Don’t bother.” He threw away the rest of his coffee in the garbage outside the café, casting one last glance at her. “Don’t worry about the shirt.”
He moved past her, stuffing his hands in his pockets as he was striding down the sidewalk.
“I’m sorry!” She called to him, his ear twitched so she knew he heard her. Emilia placed her hands on her hips for a moment before putting her earbuds back in, checking the time along with picking a new song, and getting back to the day ahead of her.
It was a big city after all, what are the chances she would run into him again, anyways?
------------------
She made it back to her apartment at nearly 9:00, which is a little too late for her comfort but there wasn’t much she could do about the situation. Instead she hoped in the shower for a quick wash, downed the rest of her smoothie from earlier with some toast to accommodate it, and then went to revising one of her papers that was due at 2:59 pm at the end of class that day.
Emilia Wine was a senior in college in her last year of a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences; the subject of which she found utterly fascinating and had tried to decide whether or not she was going to follow her studies further.
Though, at the moment, she was happy.
Yes, when she was still known as Amy Rose she threw herself into her studies immediately, immensely, and got one of the highest grades-- much to Tails delight (seeing as he already finished all of his schooling by the time he was 12, but… whatever.) Getting to be Emilia Wine wasn’t just an overnight decision, though. It took months of planning, and a lot of strings to be pulled by government officials, even the Royal Family themselves had to be involved in the process to allow Amy to change her name and move away.
But it was done, in the city of Empire Amy Rose was officially, and legally, Emilia Wine.
Who was a top student at ECU in her program, which she was very proud to report back to her friends at home.
Though, there were plenty of friends she made here, like…
“Emiliaaaaaa,” there was a singing voice as it bounded down the tiled hallways. Little heels clipping along the hallway as Emilia turned around to watch with a small smile as her best friend came up to her.
“Hey Cream,” Cream the Rabbit wasn’t quite as tall as Emilia was now, though they were about the same age (Emilia was just only slightly older) even with her heels on. Cream and her had been friends since the beginning of school when they were put together as roommates in their first year together.
“You Bitch!” She yelled at Emilia after catching her breath for a moment. Her orange sweater was bunched around her waist where a pastel blue skirt was ruffled from her “run”. “You said you were going to wait!” Cream mock hit Emilia, pouting the entire time.
Emilia laughed, grabbing Cream’s hand as she pulled the other girl outside. “Cream you’re gonna get us kicked out if you keep yelling Bitch at me.”
“Well then stop being one!”
Emilia tapped her cheek for a moment, giving a sly smile to Cream as she patted the other girls head. “Then I wouldn’t be me, would I?”
“That’s the point.” Cream pouted, crossing her arms as the two walked towards the library.
“But then you wouldn’t love me.” Emilia batted her eyelashes at Cream, who scoffed and rolled her honey yellow eyes.
“Sounds like your loss.” Cream put her nose in the air, stuffing her hands in her sweatshirt pockets.
Emilia lurked behind Cream at that point, giving a sickly sweet smile from over the girls shoulder.
“But what if… I make you cookies?”
“Mmmm…” Cream looked at Emilia for a moment, before shaking her head. “Sorry, you gotta try a bit harder.”
“I’m not a “try hard” like you are,” Emilia flipped her quills over her shoulder, now significantly longer and pulled into a high ponytail to keep them manageable.
Cream gasped at her, throwing her book bag at Emilia.
“Emi!” Emilia laughed as she ran, Cream grabbing her bag from the ground and running after the peach hedgehog. “You whore!”
“Stop talking about yourself like that.” Emilia called over her shoulder, ducking from the bag Cream threw at her again.
Emilia finally made it into the library, flashing a guilty smile to the librarian at the front desk as she skipped the elevator and ran up the spiral staircase, going rather quickly as she made it to the third floor by the time that Cream got to the entryway.
Emilia could tell because of the clicking of Cream’s heels on the flooring.
Emilia stifled a laugh, holding her hand over her mouth as she moved deeper into the bookshelves towards a slightly darker part of the library. She turned around, walking backwards among the shelves as she watched with excitement for Cream.
Hands suddenly touched her arms, and made Emilia squeal. She turned around quickly, ready to see Cream there but-- there was empty air.
Emilia could still feel the hands on her arms though, and the grip slowly loosened. There was stillness for a moment before the world in front of her moved. Purple manifested where there was open air just a moment before.
“Sorry,” a voice said, a calming rumble like thunder. “You were backing up so quickly and then I realized that you probably didn’t see me.” A chameleon stood in front of her rather suddenly, and Emilia blinked in surprise.
“Oh, I should’ve been paying more attention. I’m sorry for almost running you over.” Emilia shifted her bag over her shoulder to sit more comfortably.
“Why were you running anyways?” he asked her, and she felt rather embarrassed to say she was playing an impromptu game with her friend.
“I, umm…” she rubbed her arm then. “Well, it’s going to sound kind of silly, but I’m hiding from my friend.”
The chameleon smiled then, nodding. “As long as you’re not in trouble.” There was silence for a moment.
“I’m Espio by the way, I’m a student teacher here for the time being.” He held his hand out to her. Emilia smiled easily and took it in her own to shake.
“Emilia, I’m finishing up my last year for my bachelor’s degree. I’ve gotta say you don’t look like a student teacher.”
Espio gave a light hearted chuckle at that. “Yeah, I’m not much older than the majority of students here. I just finished most of my schooling early.”
“Ah, one of my best friends is like that.” Emilia nodded. Though the conversation didn’t go much farther than that when Cream barreled down the row of books and tackled Amy to the ground.
Thankfully Espio was faster than either of them, as he moved out of the way before Emilia and Cream flew by him and into the floor.
“I found you!” Cream hissed in triumph, sitting on top of her friend with arms crossed. Espio looked between the two of them before hiding his laughter behind his hand.
“It was great to meet you Emilia.” Espio said eventually, Emilia gave him a weak thumbs up from the ground. Stuffing his hands in his pockets he wandered down the rows of books before turning invisible again.
“Who was that?” Cream asked once she decided to let Emilia up. Emilia brushed herself off and shouldered her bag.
“His name is Espio, apparently he’s a student teacher here.”
“Weird, who for?” Emilia shrugged. Cream tapped her chin.
“Well, I haven’t seen him before.”
Emilia gave a sly smile to Cream once again.
“I’m surprised actually, with how many people you’ve slept with around campus you know everyone by proxy.”
Cream hit Emilia on the arm with an encyclopedia from the book shelves.  Emilia laughed and then softly cried out “Owww I have to use this arm tonight.”
Cream’s cheeks were blazing red. “At least I’m classy enough to not try to seduce my teachers.” She sniffed.
Emilia blushed crimson.
“It was a completely accidental and giant misunderstanding!”

Chapter 1
When does one decide that they are happy with who they are? Is it a gradual course, or is it rather sudden? Do they just wake up one day and love who they are as a person? Or, does it take work, time, and patience?
For Amy Rose the telling moment when she realized she didn’t like who she was when, during the final showdown with Eggman, their small group: Herself, Rouge and Knuckles, Tails, and of course Sonic himself came out of the flying airship. Everyone had bangs and bruises, maybe a couple broken bones but nothing detrimental.
The mobian’s of New Mobotropolis came out of their bunkers cheering and crying, there were minimal casualties but casualties regardless-- but still, the mobian’s cheered for them. They cheered for them more than they mourned their dead. They cheered for the lives that were saved, that the nightmare was over, that Sonic saved them.
Sonic was at the forefront, barely dirtied and scratched from the fight, Knuckles and Tails right by his side with a bit more bulk of the injuries, Knuckle’s ribs were patched up with parts of gauze and Amy’s dress; Tails’ had patches on his arm and over his eye. Rouge, firmly planted at Knuckle’s side with her arm around his shoulder, had the worst injury of all of them- a hole, clear through her left wing.
Amy, she was behind the group, small compared to them even though her hammer was larger than any of them. She only had scrapes and bruises and a singed quill… that they knew of. She covered the deep gash on the back of her arm with only her gloves, she didn’t want to worry Sonic.
Their pictures were taken, Sonic’s chest had been puffed out as he waved and graciously accepted the praise, receiving handshakes and crying people falling into his arms.
And there was little Amy Rose, 16 at the time the picture was taken. Looking battered, scared, and at the back of the group peeking from over Tails’ shoulder. Her only concern in that moment was seeing Sonic. Making sure that Sonic was ok.
That he didn’t get terribly hurt.
That Amy Rose didn’t seem to care too much about the hole in Rouge’s wing, the crushed and cracked ribs on Knuckles, or the possibility that Tails’ might be blind in one eye. She didn’t care that she and Tails were children in this war.
It was Sonic.
It was always about Sonic.
It was then, in that moment, that a little voice finally broke through the wall she put it behind however many years ago, screaming and fighting that she should be a lot more concerned about a lot more than fucking Sonic who doesn’t even seem to be concerned about her.
Amy and the voice in her head fought for days, arguing constantly back and forth about how Amy needed to rethink her priorities, how she needed to be more concerned about her friends whose lives were on the line to save others and what was she doing? Fantasizing over Sonic, on how much he would have to love her if they won. If he only saw how strong she was, he would be head over heels for her.
That Amy Rose was gone once, at the reception of their victory only weeks after Eggman’s defeat, she saw Sonic with Sally Acorn, leader of the Freedom Fighters. Arm in arm, him in a tux with a shiny black bowtie and a medal of Honor bestowed upon him by King Acorn himself and Sally in her pretty blue dress with a crown sat atop her auburn hair.
They shared a kiss together, in front of everyone. Amy Rose wanted to cry, she wanted to die, she even fled to the bathrooms and cried her pretty little green eyes out and fuck did she feel pathetic.
Anger, burning hot anger welled inside her. Not at Sonic, no-- she could never be mad at Sonic. No, it was at herself. Herself, for being so pathetic and so naïve and so god damn selfish. She knew Sally loves Sonic and vice versa, but still she left the Freedom Fighters to fight with Sonic directly, hoping to steal his heart from Sally who held it since they were children. Amy Rose hoped beyond hope that Sonic would break Sally’s heart and come flocking to her, come bestowing flowers and confessing his undying, undeniable love to her but just couldn’t say anything sooner until Eggman had been defeated.
Her nails bit into her fists and her teeth bit into her lip, drawing blood from both.
She didn’t rejoin the party.
It had taken Amy days to finally leave her house, striking a deal with herself to rejoin everyday normal life. Going to school like normal kids her age, visiting her friends in the hospital, picking up a new hobby.
Rouge was doing better, Knuckles was in recovery, and Tails… well, Tails unfortunately lost his right eye. But, he was optimistic as Amy expressed an interest in his inventions and technology-- and even after having a few detailed discussions with him, he offered for her to help him design a new optical implant. She even took over the main construction of it while he oversaw it, seeing as he was lacking… depth perception.
Turns out, she was pretty good at it-- the whole building aspect and incorporating technology into it. Little tweaks here and there but there was a working prototype oculus implant by the end of 4 months with Amy having found a new passion in life that could actually help people.
Of course Amy was no doctor and only a novice when it came to the technology, but with Tails’ help she was well on her way to becoming an apprentice, but when it came time to put the implant in, Amy could only wait. In fact, Tails’ and Amy traveled to Empire City for the operation to happen.
While Tails’ was in recovery, sporting his new first generation implant, Amy explored the city. Among the twinkling lights, expansive park, bustling life that didn’t seem to be touched by the horrors of war, a college sat unassuming towards the edge of town. Apparently some of the oldest buildings in the city resided on the campus.
Amy didn’t realize in that moment that she enjoyed architecture, it had never really held any significance in her life beforehand. Though now, gazing at the intricate weavings of some buildings, one even looked like a gothic mansion that a vampire would reside in, she could appreciate it. Was one able to fall in love with a building? She felt like it as she gazed up at it, walking along the paved way as mobian’s wandered aimlessly around campus. She didn’t fit in, but she didn’t stand out either.
It was then that the realization that Amy never put much thought of going to school stared her straight in the face, would she even enjoy college? What would she want to go for? Amy sat in a gazebo behind the mansion-like building and overlooked what could only be a court yard with other buildings surrounding it. She contemplated then, not sure what she wanted to do with her life.
Would she be happy in a structured schooling environment? In fact, when was the last time Amy was in school? Aside from the times Tails had helped her study or they learned something together… Amy hadn’t been since she was just a young hedgehog.
It was a decision for another day.
Though the campus and the city had been behind the two of them for weeks, months even it still sat heavily on Amy’s mind. What was there for her? Days continued to pass by, most of them spent with Tails during his recovery and tweaking the implant now that it was usable.
Though what really solidified the idea of Amy moving away, starting over in a new life was when Sonic came a few weeks after Tails had surgery while Amy was there but in the back of Tails’ home in the indoor work area; Tails was taking a snack break since Amy brought over cookies she made that morning when Sonic had knocked on the door. Tails had a cane to help him while his implant was with Amy, and she heard him banging around before getting to the front door.
“Sonic!” Tails was of course excited to see his best friend, while Amy… she had stilled in her movements, but ended up shocking herself with an instrument to test currents through the device. She decided to finish up what she was working on.
“How are things going?” she could hear Sonic’s voice even though it was muffled. Tails said something but she tuned it out, instead focusing on the sparks flying and the sound they were making.
She was at a good stopping point, but sat on the stool in the workroom as she could hear Tails and Sonic continuing to chat. She didn’t want to get up, she would rather hole herself up in that room forever and just continue to tinker if it was allowed.
“Not loving him anymore doesn’t mean you hate him.” She reasoned with herself, because it was true. She could never hate Sonic, but she could be uncomfortable at seeing him again.
She sighed the breath she was holding, instead she scooted back from the workstation, removed her face mask, and emerged finally.
Sonic and Tails were sitting at the table in the middle of the kitchen, worn and knobby legs barely held the poor thing up but it had yet to collapse despite the clutter on it. Though Amy noticed that Tails had at least cleaned out a spot for her plate of cookies.
“Amy!” Tails was excited to see her, grinning ear to ear as he sat facing her; Sonic though had his back to her. He turned slowly, before standing up to give her a surprised look but a smile regardless.
“Ames, I didn’t know you were here.” Sonic said easily, smiling and scratching his cheek. He stood with a rigid back and a pinch to his eyebrow, and Amy knew enough to tell he was uncomfortable.
“Yeah,” she smiled easily instead, leaning against the door frame with arms crossed. “I’ve been helping Tails out with his new implant.”
“Really? Like, just cleaning up and stuff?” Sonic asked casually, scratching his nose as he looked around the home closely this time. Amy’s brows pinched as she tilted her head in confusion.
“No?” She was going to ask him what he meant, but Tails spoke up before she could finish.
“Actually Sonic-- Amy has been a big help with the designing of the implant along with the first generation of actually designing the mechanics of it. She was just finishing up some of the modifications I had asked for during our initial test of it since I have the doc already implanted in my head, so removing the device to make modifications is super easy.”
Sonic looked at Tails like he grew two heads but still only had the one eye; Sonic looked between Tails and Amy, finally looking at Amy’s oil spotted quills, dirty overalls, ruined and cropped shirt, and the bandana holding her bangs out of her face.
“Yup, I’ve been helping Tails for 6 months… But, who’s counting.” She shrugged. Sonic was still looking at her with a suspicious look on his face.
“What’s wrong, Sonic?” Amy asked him, trying to keep her voice even though she wanted to snap at him.
“I never figured you for the technology kinda gal,” he shrugged, rubbing a finger in his ear. Amy’s nose twitched with a slight disgust. Had he always picked his ear or his nose when having conversations? “Kinda always figured you were the more ‘at home’ type, you know cleaning, tending to the garden…” he cast a glance at the cookies on the table before lifting his eyes back to her. “... baking.” He shrugged, looking disinterested now with the conversation. Amy tried to calm her expression but her shoulders tensed and her hands tightened around her arms.
“Well, I like those things too, Sonic.” Amy said in a clipped tone. “There’s nothing wrong with having a clean, beautiful home, or baking sweets for my friends.” She emphasized the word, the daunting realization that the gap between Sonic and her had been larger than she ever knew. All the sweets she baked for him gone uneaten; while the plate of cookies sitting between them was nearly gone.
He rubbed the back of his head, casting a glance back to Tails. Amy sighed, moving up to the table. There was a tense and awkward silence between them as she stared up at Sonic, who tried to give her a bored and disinterested look but she could see the pulse in his neck, she broke the contact first by leaning by him and grabbing her own cookie. She pulled her goggles from around her neck back up to her eyes and went back into the back room.
A pit was in her stomach, writhing like worms in the mud since she felt so much like dirt. Here she was so blinded by how she felt by him, obsessed with him, that she didn’t even realize how… uncomfortable she made him. Suddenly her concern was not about him not being a good friend… but instead on how she wasn’t a good friend, either.
That was the final nail in the proverbial coffin; Amy decided then that not only would she commit to her studies, but she would get Tails to help her more so with technology. Ultimately she wanted to help people, and she wanted to leave.
She just couldn’t get Empire City out of her head, even as she focused once again at the replica of Tails’ blue eye and watched as the pupil dilated; Amy completely forgot that Tails could still see out of the eye even as it was detached due to the data it was able to transmit back to the main doc that was implanted in his head as well, so she didn’t realize that he could see her lip quivering and tears sliding down her cheeks. She didn’t realize he could see her as she ripped her goggles off of her head, threw them off to the side and held her head in her hands as she tried her best not to sob too loud.
The cookie sat abandoned on the bench next to the eye, forgotten for the time being.
With Tails' help, and he didn’t comment on her tear-stricken face or half eaten cookie, the updated oculus implant was finished late into that evening. He helped his dear friend to the couch for sleep, too drained from the day to make the drive home; he was unaware of the decision she made to throw herself into her studies, and then to leave…
