Just had a conversation with someone on Facebook about Shane. They told me that a lot of people gloss over the fact that he's a "gross alcoholic" and that it "should be obvious", and yet people still find him hot.
First of all, nobody who likes shane glosses over the fact that he's an alcoholic. Plenty of people like him so much because of it. They might see themselves in him, or they might appreciate the representation of alcoholism and its recovery.
Second of all, who the fuck cares if people find him hot? Just because he's got a mental illness, does not mean he's not deserving of kindness and appreciation.
Usually I wouldn't take this so personally because, as I've said in the past, it's just a video game. However, this person wasn't just referring to a fictional character. They lumped everyone suffering from alcoholism in the real world into it as well, and said that anybody who shows them kindness also has "workloads to get through".
It's fucking sad, just how common this mentality is among the Stardew Valley fandom. Also a little funny (ridiculous) that they claim people "goss over the fact that shane is an alcoholic" when they very much choose to gloss over the fact that shane is in recovery by the end of the game. He makes the choice to get better and manage his addiction.
#not getting into the discourse about his recovery because i genuinely believe it is up to interpretation whether shane is an alcoholic#or is just struggling#i can see both arguments and have written him both ways#but even putting that aside and no matter your opinion of whether he is an alcoholic or not...#does being an alcoholic or being depressed or being stuck in a hole negate one's humanity?#does it strip away a person's right to be loved and to better themselves?#no?#okay good cause for a second i thought we were denying people humanity and grace when they're struggling 👍#i say it all the time and i'll say it again:#shane isn't real but people like him are#sdv shane#stardew valley shane#chicken husband#shane my beloved

Same here!! Truthfully, I can't stop a random teenager from reading my work on AO3 or looking at my blog.
