oh gee i dont know, maybe my grandparents being terrified of speaking ill of a regime that ended 20+ years ago for fear that 'theyre still listening', still sometimes repeating mantras in a low dead voice i think unknowingly.
not to mention the dozens of people from my tiny ass 3 mil population country being sent to goli otok because they expressed an opinion or did sth that could maybe be tied to 'being against the State' if you sit down and reach your hardest for 6 hours over them (i.e. 14 young muslim men who decided to help the elderly ppl that lived alone in their neighborhood with doing chores n going shopping n cooking food n whatever were sent to prison and tortured for over 2 months by means i dont want to mention here, until a couple of em died and the other few have gone insane because "they were planning to organize the fall of the Ruler" when all they did was help out some old people. thats it. 50 other cases like that one).
when the military decides to fight or fight back the troops take shit fr om civillian homes by force with no consequence and no prior notice, no warrant. at that same time the Great Ruler wow sinking 4,6 billion state dollars into a AWC building that was literally never used or finished but hey, dont dare ask why the fuck it exists.
when a new road or building needs to be built they send out lists of civilians who Must come and work for free in shit conditions to build it Or Else, multiple times. cause Our country innit. you 'die under mysterious circumstances' if you express a sliver of individuality. your neighbor snitches on you complaining about hard work and you get sent to solitary prison.
life under communism is fucking hell with no freedom of thought allowed for, let alone speech or action. no protests no complaints you live and die a fucking animal or live to see the state fail cause they always fucking do, and you spend the rest of your life wondering if it still secretly exists and lurks in the back of your head to get you killed if you say a bad thing about it in a voice that isnt hushed and terrified.
fuck communism. fuck yall american suburbian kids who suddenly decided everyone who hates communism is a bad person. yall dont know shit. it doesnt work, has never worked, will never work. marx and engels wrote a fairytale that elites used in multiple countries to sell hope to young & inexperienced people and turn said countries into hellscapes - basically nation wide prison - and here you are in 2019 with all the historical evidence of horrors it helped create everywhere it existed, thinking youre ~woke and smart for saying its actually good and thinking that im a bad & weak & docile & lazy person for knowing its not. and im not cynical for saying that, im not a cynic in general.
and no, i dont think capitalism is good either. but not fearing for my life when i say that makes it less bad than communism. having basic human rights is also cool i guess. simple as that. sorry if i sound rude, i see that i am in this answer, but if you were asked over and over to defend such a logical stance and see people still refuse to see you as anything but 'lazy' coz u dont wanna start some fucking revolution that leads to this hell ought to make you mad at some point lol.

The ending Steve deserved
steve returns the stones, he comes back, hands the shield to sam. he never understood when erskine said he saw good in him, but he does when he looks at sam.
“i think i’ll try some of that life that tony was always telling me to get”, he says.
sam doesn’t seem surprised. “you know we’re always here for you steve.”
“i know.”
the people they lost are back, but they lost 5 years of their lives, 5 years where the people they left behind had moved on, 5 years that never was for them. steve knows a little about that.
so, he continues with his therapy group, dedicates even more time to it than he already did before. he meets regularly with sam and bucky, listens to them talk about their adventures and inside jokes and feels nothing but warmth. he made the right choice.
he meets with clint and his family too, he feels that he owes natasha that.
he even meets with pepper and little morgan. they don’t need him, but he always feels a little lighter after spending an afternoon with them.
they check in on him too. wanda likes to show up at random moments and cluck over his cooking skills, rhodey calls, peter shows up with him to his therapy group. they care about him, his family. he knows.
tony and nat died to make sure they got a future. steve lives to make sure it was worth it, to make sure it was the best possible future they could have.
he doesn’t need to be captain america to do that.
it’s not a life he pictured for himself, but that was okay. it’s not a family he pictured having, but that was okay too. his family was unconventional, but it was his and as he once told tony, the man who wanted the wife, and the kids, and the dog went down in the ice. he now has a bunch of broken people who he loves, who love him, and he couldn’t picture anything better for himself.
he lost people yes, he has always lost people, but he gained so many as well.
so he tells everyone the only way to move was onward. he tells them they need to keep their eyes on the years to come, not the years they lost.
that’s what he tells everyone, and that’s what he does.

Exact lines from Endgame to prove that Stony is canon
1. Steve rushing to Tony’s side as soon as the Benatar lands.
Tony : I couldn’t stop him
Steve : Neither could I
Tony : I lost the kid
Steve : Tony, we did
Steve looking a combination of jealous/sad/angry when Pepper hugs Tony since he doesn’t get to hug him.

2. While trying to find Thanos.
Steve : Tony, I am gonna need you to focus
Tony : And I NEEDED you. As in past tense. What you need is too late buddy, Sorry. You know what I need, *angrily pushes away the bowl*, I need to shave. What we needed was a suit of armor around the world. That’s what we needed.
Steve : *looking like a sad puppy since his husband was clearly in pain* Well, that didn’t work out, did it?
Tony : I said we’d lose. You said we’ll do that together too. And guess what Cap, we lost and you weren’t there. I’ve got nothing for you Cap. No co-ordinates, no clues, no strategies, no options, zero, zip, nada. No Trust! Liar!
Tony proceeds to angrily rip off his arc reactor, in other words - his heart, and places it in Steve’s hand. After angrily asking Steve to put it on and find Thanos, Tony faints due to exhaustion, anger and pain.

3. Five years later when Steve visits Tony with Nat and Scott.
Steve : I get it and I am happy for you. I really am but this is our second chance.

If you don’t see the pain in Steve’s eyes that although Tony is happy but he is not a part of it, I don’t know what to tell you.

4. When Tony returns to the Avengers HQ.
Steve is clearly more happier now and is genuinely smiling.

Then they proceed to shake their hands for almost 7 seconds. If you are telling me that just friends or work buddies shake their hands for that long is normal, I am not gonna believe you.
Steve *when Tony wants to hand him over his shield* : Tony, I don’t know.
Tony : What? I made it for you.
Steve : Thank you Tony.
Tony : Will you keep that a little quiet? I didn’t bring one for the whole team.

5. Steve and Tony just staring at each other during Steve’s speech before entering the quantum tunnel.

7. After Thanos attacks the Avengers HQ and Tony finds Cap.
Tony : Come on buddy wake up. That’s my man.

8. Old Steve on bench.
Old Steve *to Sam* : When I put the stones back, I thought maybe I would try some of that life Tony was telling me to get.
Sam : How did that workout for you?
Steve : It was beautiful.
So, instead of staying in the present and not moving on, which he clearly wouldn’t be able to after his love’s death; he goes to the past and stays there. To live his life with the only other person he has loved besides Tony. If you remember AoU, Steve tells Tony that the guy who wanted a family, etc. went under ice 70 years ago and this is a new person. But after Tony’s death, instead of being stuck without going nowhere and not moving on; Steve decides to follow his late love’s wishes and tries to live a life that his husband wanted him to live.
