Thought I ought to bring this over here for the Tumblr crew since itās making a little buzz in the other place and I want to gather all my thoughts in one place.
So, back in 2022 I was in my feelings about Izuku (when am I not?) and wrote the following little sad headcanon on twt:
Made myself sad thinking about how the original Japanese word for Quirk is ākoseiā, which means āindividualityā or the unique part of a personality. Itās no wonder Deku thought he was plain and useless. Everyone has literally been telling him since he was 4. š Like, thereās no way at that age he could separate people talking about his lack of meta-ability from his own unique value as a person when theyāre using the same damn word. Thatās the kind of stuff thatās going to stick with you. š„ŗ
Sad to imagine, eh?
Fast forward to 2024 and chapter 412, and as always, I was browsing the jp fandom tweets for reactions after the official release. They often pick up on things we miss like Katsukiās childlike language, the NTR implications of the kudoichi plot etc.
As I scrolled, I realised there was a HUGE disconnect between what we in āThe Westā were experiencing (mostly rage at yet another translation āchoiceā) and the existential questioning that was occurring among Japanese readers.
This is just a tiny glimpse, but you should know that every single one I saw was doing the tweet equivalent of staring into the middle distance with a haunted look.
Itās all about the panel below, which was mentioned by the incomparable Pikahlua, as it is unusual in writing āmukoseiā without the speechmarks that signify āquirklessā (to use the English term) rather than ālacking individualityā.
Horikoshi always uses speechmarks around āKoseiā when talking about quirks, so the implication here is that Izuku never believed he had actual individuality/personality.
Using this interpretation, Kudou observed that Izuku held the hope that even people who were detestable (Katsuki) and those who had no individuality (Izuku) still had human hearts.
Read that again. Izuku hoped that both he and Kacchan, despite their shortcomings, had human hearts. He thinks his only worth is as a vessel, a holder of OFA, and without that heās barely human.
Ever noticed how some parts of the fandom complain that Deku is a boring MC, that heās just āniceā, and we never get his opinions on things? Yeah.
Remember how hard he cried when All Might said he could be a hero? That was the first time in his life that someone acknowledged him as someone with potential, with worth. (In ch2 he also says āI have no reason to refuse!!ā when offered OFA, which always struck me as slightly anticlimactic but makes way more sense now).
And remember how he cried in a similar way when Ochako told the world that he wasnāt special but that he had a special power? She couldnāt have known she was reinforcing his deepest held insecurity, and for a moment his mask slipped. Or maybe he was touched by her assertion that he was just a āregular high school kidā? We donāt know, but itās worth taking a look at these moments in this new light.
You staring into the middle distance with a haunted look too yet? I know I am.
If youāre interested in the bright side (I needed this, I hope it helps):
Narratively speaking, this is the angst section that will lead to Midoriya Izuku: Rising and the happy ending they all deserve.
And the person most likely to disavow him of this sense of inherent worthlessness is the one person who added to it the most in their childhoods.
āØKACCHAN!!āØ
No one else can reassure Izuku that he is special, that heās worthwhile andācruciallyāthat he always has been, because heās the only one who knew that all along.
If you need more reassurance, remember that their Origin and Rising chapters so far have all involved each other and have mirrored the emotional journey theyāre both on.
Bakugou Katsuki: Origin: Katsuki struggles to accept Izuku and work as a team to battle All Might. Eventually does the bare minimum to cooperate by lending him his gauntlet.
Bakugou Katsuki: Rising: Katsuki coordinates the pro heroes and sacrifices himself to save Izuku. His body āmoved on its own.ā
Midoriya Izuku: Origin: Izuku is bullied by Katsuki, tries to save Katsuki from a villaināhis body āmoved on its ownā, and is consequently told he can be a hero by All Might.
It isnāt a reach at all to pretty safely assume that Izukuās Rising chapter will also be intrinsically linked to Katsuki, and it is his cooperation, faith and love (however you interpret it) that will finally save Izuku from his own sense of worthlessness. Closing the circle.
So yeah, this bit could be rough for the next few chapters, but I have faith that Horikoshi will wrap it up in a way that will be so rewarding and satisfying.
Iām gonna stop now because Iām ill and I need to rest my head, thanks for reading! š®āšØ

Thanks for taking the time to put it in words ššš
Are you one of the people expecting bkdk to be canon? I just learned that there are people that sincerely believe Hori would have Deku and Bkg have an explicit confession of love. That he's going to be the first popular mangaka to have a endgame gay ship. I am in so many mlm ships of shounen but I've never had the delusion that the author would make them canon despite the evidences otherwise. Like I thought it's fine to ship mlm as long as we stayed in our lane and never harassed the author.
After speaking together, we do believe based on the evidence in the series that BakuDeku being canon is not an even vaguely unreasonable conclusion to reach. We think the story is written in a way you can reach that conclusion easily, so much that even casual viewers who arenāt shippers are questioning the nature/potential conclusion of their relationship.
One of the most consistent and convincing lines of evidence for us has been Katsuki taking on roles/positions traditionally reserved for female heroines/love interests (if youāve seen anyone call him ānarratively androgynous,ā this is what theyāre referring to). In the context of Jump magazine, we have a number of shonen heroines and love interests to compare Katsuki to. The similarities are so striking that many notable people (including the VAs for the anime) have taken to calling him the heroine of the series.
However, we do think things like homophobia (whether itās the writer or the audience/consumerbase at largeā in this case weāre primarily referring to the audience), the safety of everyone involved, and timing are all unpredictable factors people have to take into consideration when writing/reading a story of this magnitude. Needless to say, if Horikoshi is indeed planning an endgame for bakudeku, heād also have to take these factors into consideration.
Horikoshi has a record of being pretty in-tune with his fanbase. He definitely keeps some eye on bnhaās receptionāfor example, he mentioned a while back that both the people who love Katsuki and the people who hate him will have something to look forward to in this finale (we can now see what he meant lol). Heās very likely aware of the people who love bakudeku and the people who loathe it.Ā
Taking into account that he tends to be very intentional with his writing choices, heās written this story in a way that not only centered bakudekuās relationship over others (notably Izuku + Ochakoās, the character heād presumably end up with if things were going predictably?), but also went the extra mile to distinguish their relationship as unique, closer than all their other relationships, the ābiggest pillar of the storyā (x, x). He didnāt have to do all of this. This extra push is whatās giving bakudeku that undeniable chance at an endgame right now, because itās come to a point where no one can ignore the implications of scenes like this:
On the flip side, we donāt think peopleās hesitation is unreasonable. Itās scary! If bakudeku were to fall flat of all this buildup/our expectations, it wouldnāt be the first time the romantic implications between a pair of boys in a story like this was ignored. Hell it wouldnāt be the first time a popular pair in general, (gay or not) got ignored in favor of what the author just felt like doing, regardless of what any previous developments in the story or interviews or official artwork would have us believe. Thereās enough written evidence that canon bakudeku wouldnāt be surprising, but thereās also (at the time of writing this response) still room for things to go another direction, for all of this to be recontextualized and passed as something else.Ā
As per social norms/patterns of behavior, this would be disappointing as hell but not surprising. Especially for people who have been let down before, we completely understand the need/impulse to distance oneself from the idea/hope that bakudeku may become canon.
In all honesty, if it turns out bakudeku isnāt canon or left open-ended (say, an ending where theyāre partners of some kind/the closest to one another without that explicit romantic confirmation), we would be frustrated/heartbroken. Not because we feel like Horikoshi shouldnāt do what he wants, he should. But because thereās been a clear effort to bring LGBTQ+ readers into the fold, and tell and portray our experiences in MHA. Horikoshi has done a beautiful, incredible job of writing various LGBTQ+ and marginalized experiences as a metaphor in his stories. Toga is a prime example. This is something that readers around the world have noticed, and itās something MHA is special for (see this data x, and the further context/commentary on it given here x).Ā
We think itās intentional. This story and the relationships in it have invoked experiences close and personal to many of us. Things are in a state right now where we wouldnāt just feel baited, we feel like readers would have a right to feel unsatisfied.
That being said, feeling unsatisfied doesnāt equate to feeling empowered to harass or bother others. Especially not Horikoshi himself, and also including other readers who had differing expectations. This is really the case across the board. We should all be able to control our anticipation/expectations without becoming assholes.Ā
Itās not just the shippers, by the way. People who work on the series or work closely with Horikoshi have rooted for bakudeku to go beyond. Izuku and Katsuki have already done what a good chunk of the readerbase thought impossible and became friends. People see their writing, their potential, and they want more. The voice actors (x, x sorry for the crunchy pic it's all i've got atm), academics (x), musicians (x, x) , editors (x) and more have all kind of rallied around Bakugou and Dekuās bond, with a particular sensitivity towards the deeply and uniquely intimate nature of it + how it evokes romance.
Weād like to see MHA exist free of the burdens previous popular shounen series have had placed on them. But thatās a conversation for the ending. As far as the fanbase goes, I think itās super important people practice humility and caution when speaking to others. We have NO way of knowing what will happen. People who have been traumatized by situations like this in the past have a right to be anxious, people in general are allowed to withhold judgment until we have all the information we need. However, we donāt think having hope or confidence that this narrative might lead us to a canon bakudeku is unwarranted or delusional.
At the end of the day one thing is true, and this was something we had to fight to āproveā much longer than we had to prove Bakudeku had romantic potential - itās that Kacchan and Izukuās lives are going to be forever intertwined in this new era of their world that births from the finale.Ā
Theyāre forever intertwined in a way thatās not replicable for any other character in the series, and thatās amazing all on its own. Weāll just have to wait and see how far they take it!
Thanks for reading if you got this far, and Happy Holidays!

Everyone say thank you Pika for being amazing and prophetic as always! I have more thoughts on this though. My poor addled brain. š®āšØ
What if that panel represents the accumulation of hopes and wishes including those that were manifested before the current battle?
I have no bloody clue but I cannot overlook the fact that Horikoshi drew a hand with identical scars to those of his MC, clasping another hand that clearly has a different sleeve. Thatās not accidental.
So what if this particular panel is representing the past rather than the present. What if itās showing the butterfly effect of everyoneās hopes and wishes swirling and influencing the present including theirs before the battle when they confessed and planned and HELD FUCKIN HANDS?!
Hehehe I love this part of the week. Let us dream for a little while more!
Hi pika! What are your thoughts about that repeated panel with the mysterious hand hold? Who are they? Who is holding hands? WHOS HANDS ARE THEY? also on the double spread it's placed just above the text box so it's deliberate. TELL ME YOUR SECRETS
Oof. Sorry I'm gonna have to kill the hype here.
I assume you mean this panel?
This isn't two people. This is one person clasping hands in prayer.
It's definitely not Izuku and Katsuki: Katsuki hasn't jumped down from UA yet.
Additionally, it's in the same line of panels as this:
You see that weird aura in both panels? That's the butterfly effect "wind" that's referenced in the chapter. It's the energy of wishes that Nighteye talks about. This is all made very clear when the panels return later in the chapter:
The text with the clasped hands panel reads "Someone's clenched fist..." It refers to the drawing itself as a symbol of a person watching on and praying for things to turn out well.
The text in the second panel with the person breathing reads "Someone's long sigh..."
These individual actions represent wishes that add up and create the future-altering wave of energy that follows Katsuki.
We can tell those earlier images are connected to this moment because the text matches. The text here reads "Someone's prayer..."
So, the short answer is: it's a single rando.
And you have to have a level 10 relationship stat with me to access my secret backstory--

Unbeknownst to Izuku, in his first and only talk with Shouto the day prior he had made a life long friend. Also, these kind of trousers are very comfy!

Aaand we're back for chapter 3! Thank you all so much for being so patient with me <3 And big thanks goes out to @/MamaPyjama2 from twitter who proofread the whole chapter (and the last two!), a great and invaluable help! Also, she came up with the amazing name for Kacchan's & Co's group!
Back to some chapter commentary: I'm super happy to introduce Denki and Sero here :D I might be overexaggerating their characters here, but Denki to me is a lovable little chaos boy, Sero is just a super fun guy in my head and together, they are the super fun dynamic. Maybe too much fun for Kacchan hihi.
(Also, are you enjoying the chapter covers? Do you see what I'm doing?)

Oh hey Tumblr sorry Iāve been busy writing fics and my brain can only cope with one stream of thought at a time.
However! Have this lovely little treat of an interview with the Hiroste Bakugou and Deku actors. It sure is something. [The something is Gay btw].

This latest chapter got me thinking about this damn quote about amputations and cross-sections in a Horikoshi interview from December 2019. Oh and by the way, this is the same interview where he talks about deciding to have Deku and Bakugouās stories intertwine rather than have them develop separately. š¤
And what has he drawn repeatedly since then? Amputated arms. And legs. And flesh burned to the bone. And open-heart surgery.
Horikoshi is showing us over and over again that being serialised in a shounen magazine will NOT STOP him from drawing and writing exactly whatever the hell he wants (laughs).
Itās such a weird thing to single out as an uncrossable line, just to then repeatedly and meticulously cross. Iām definitely overthinking again but I find it reassuring that heās not restricted at all by the genre/demographic his manga is being sold within. Heās testing his editors, his magazine and publisher and his audience, pushing the boundaries of whatās acceptable in a flagship Shonen Jump property.
And just for the avoidance of doubtāyes, I think heās going to do whatever the hell he likes with his main characters too, even if that means crossing the apparently uncrossable line that says a shounen mc canāt be gay.

Apparently itās time to reblog this epic ramble/thought experiment/stream of consciousness. WHAT IS OCCURRING
I woke up thinking about vestige Katsuki casually having a chat with vestige All Might. WHAT THE DUCK was happening there if not something seriously fruity and why did we not circle back to it once weād got over the fact that his heart had exploded?!
What must non-bkdks think is going on? Iām not even sure if weāve fully discussed what is going on? Whyyy would he have a vestige if he doesnāt have OFA?
Itās not ghosts because a) ghosts havenāt been introduced as a concept in-universe and b) AM is there and he aināt dead.
SO WHAT IS HAPPENING? Did we just totally overlook the fact that Hori made it canon that Katsuki either has OFA or just has access to the vestige realm for reasons unknown?
Also why is he fully clothed and able to speak, when poor Izuku spent every vestige scene nude and mute? And why is the background white not black? Vestige purgatory? A vestige waiting room?
I feel like when you suddenly realise you havenāt studied and the class has all moved on to new topics and youāve somehow missed a key, fundamental part of how The Whole Thing works.
If anyone has meta on this please point me towards it because at this point Iām
