hc that minerva mcgonagall’s biggest nightmare in hogwarts is not any of the potter kids, but harry potter himself. harry would make any excuse and pull any card in the book to go to hogwarts during the school year to check up on his babies because that man has a separation anxiety that rivals no other (except maybe ron’s, but he’s not head auror is he?). he will lodge fake complaints to visit that school for a ‘check in.’ he will write up fake reports of a extremely dangerous creature being spotted near the grounds to ‘investigate.’ he will say theres been talk of [insert dangerous object] stashed somewhere in the room of requirement. and all of these concerns are resolved within a day, and get more and more creative as the years go on. eventually minerva stops questioning how playing an hour long chess match with his daughter is investigating and lets that man run wild.

Hi! ok first ask, so I like hp next gen granted I do have a very specific and unpopular opinion/interpretation on them. Now one of favorite characters is albus.
Recently I've seen some posts about the idea of albus having a mental health disorder (mainly depression) and I was wondering what your opinion on that is. Do you think that it adds depth or nuance to some of the things he does or do you think it in some way takes away his autonomy by making him influenced by a disorder?
Personally I'm one of the 3 people who headcannon him to be bipolar and I think that adds to his dynamics and character. But what are your thoughts on headcannoning him with a mental health disorder/s?
Okay so, I’m certainly not the authority on this subject as one of three neurotypical people on this site lol but I’ll give it my best shot.
In my experience, head canons have never been positive nor negative in existence. Simply neutral. It all depends on how you spin it.
Is Albus boiled down to just… being depressed all of the time in your fic/hc/whatever? Then yeah, that’s not great. If you decide to make one of your characters depressed, then you need to do some actual research. Slapping a label or identity on a character to describe their personality in lieu of anything else is sort of reductive? However, sexuality, gender identity, mental illness and race all play giant roles in our ever evolving identities as they inform how we navigate the world. Albus being bipolar or depressed would add as it only can in this instance, since we’re giving and not taking away.
Of course at the end of the day, a lot of people in fandom love to project in a lighthearted way (hence those giant bullet point list head canon master posts) and I truly don’t find anything wrong with those either. Usually they’re just made in good fun. If you plan to write fic, just do. Your. Research.
To answer your other question also; no, it doesn’t take away from his autonomy as characters are just themes and motifs, not people. Disability doesn’t take away from real people’s autonomy either (as it’s just… a part of them). Unless being bipolar informs every single last decision your Albus will ever make all on its own (ignoring his home dynamic, his school life, etc.) then it’s fine.
TLDR; if you do it good, then it’s good!

… Yes, I have thoughts about this (also, thank you!)
Albus, from the very beginning of hpcc, is slowly alienated from his family. As he ages (to 4th year), he becomes even more of a black sheep. I think what’s already given to us in hpcc involving Albus’s relationship with his family are the consequences of him being bullied more than it is him simply being in Slytherin. However, that plays a large role too.
Do I think James joined in on the bullying? At first. I don’t think he thought much of it, other than being “betrayed” by his brother. Certainly, seeing Scorpius as Albus’s new partner in crime led to some built up resentment. I like to think James snapped out of this his fifth year because of OWLS though, and he never went as hard on scorbus as his housemates definitely did. I also don’t think James knew how horribly Albus was treated, but he did participate in a little bullying (in his mind, teasing). Oh, but Albus believed James knew about it all. He tends to inflate a lot of things, spiral, etc. One of my headcanons is that he has anxiety, and this is one of the nastier parts of it.
I think Albus feels stranded by his brother, and a bit burned. I think they have two different ideas on their relationship to each other, blinding them both to reality. I think James got “over it”, but Albus is still resentful (moreso wary). James will, in my mind, have to do the bulk of repairing the relationship but Albus will have to open himself up to the idea. Post hpcc, I think he's growing into that mindset. They recover their relationship eventually. Albus will forever be closer with Lily though lol.
Aside from being alienated from his family, I think Albus is extremely codependent with Scorpius. He needs, desperately, more friends. Albus is super off putting though (fond) so that’s going to be difficult.
I think Albus is in a place by around 5th and 6th year to really heal. He probably gets some new friends by osmosis when studying for OWLS (probably a very patient Ravenclaw or an extremely thick-skinned Slytherin, who knows) and begins to reconnect with some cousins. I like having him be friends with Molly, but in my nextgen verse she’s long since graduated so it’s mainly through post and during holiday season. He… well. Probably doesn’t really reconnect with Rose (but it does happen) until 7th year or post graduation.
(Further emphasis on Molly. They are Thee gay cousins, oh my God.)
These aren’t super dark/deep head canons, but I tend to stray from those in general tbh. Not my thing.
