I was rewatching Ghostbusters and it’s so funny to me how the Gatekeeper is so cunty, she possessed Dana and instantly changed into a fancy dress, and put some sick af makeup on, and she’s so seductive and then there’s the Keymaster who’s walking around New York talking to Ghostbusters like

bro is literally Jessica and Roger Rabbit 😭😭

Thinking about how in the TCM game, Johnny's relationship with his overbearing and abusive "mother" is one of the main plots, and how he was taken from his real mother at a young age, and then here we have Virginia, a victim whose son went missing years ago, and she's still looking for him, optimistic that he's alive and willing to do anything to save him.
I'm not saying that Johnny is her son Jesse (because that's confirmed to not be canon) but still, the parallel is there and that's gotta strike some sort of nerve with Johnny.

Ringu Facts!
Tumblr media
Because she was trending on Twitter and my hyperfixation has started again ^_^
The film isn’t actually called “Ringu” but rather “The Ring.” Due to the American remake also being called “The Ring” the Japanese film is called “Ringu” to differentiate the two. The name comes from the romaji of the Japanese title as the film, despite being called “The Ring”, would’ve been pronounced as “Ringu” in Japanese.
The title of the film is actually two puns. It’s called “The Ring” after both the phone ringing after Reiko watches the tape, and also the ring shape of the well, especially when viewed on the actual tape itself.
Tumblr media
Sadako was canonically intersex in the original novel, and it was a major part of the story. It’s never mentioned in the films, so it’s likely retconned.
Similarly in the novel, Sadako’s curse was not supernatural or paranormal at all, but rather sci-fi. The “curse” was actually smallpox, and not the result of Sadako’s vengeful spirit.
Despite popular belief, the phone doesn’t actually ring after watching the tape, and you do not get a warning of seven days. In the original film, the phone only rings if you are in Cabin B4 because it was built over Sadako’s original resting place (the well.) Anywhere else and you never received a phone call.
Sadako is a “nensha” and can manipulate imagery, photography and technology. This is how the tape was created and this was how Sadako used her powers to go through the TV. It’s also why her cursed victims pictures are distorted.
The TV thing is also not directly part of the curse. In the original film only Ryuji is killed by Sadako exiting the TV and staring at him. Every other death is vague and off-screen however it’s clear that Sadako didn’t use a TV in any of them, and only “manifested” to give them heart attacks. The only reason she used a TV to kill Ryuji was because he was near one, and as a nensha, she could use it to manifest herself.
Oddly enough, victims of Sadako, whether they live or not, tend to inherit psychic abilities likely through their experience with the curse. Yoichi already had some psychic abilities, which he’d inherited from his father, however they amplified after he’d survived the curse. Similarly, Mai had no known abilities until after she’d survived Sadako’s curse as well.
On a similar note, people who die at the hands of Sadako usually end up becoming onryō’s themselves. Kanae was killed by Sadako’s curse and returned as a yūrei as did Ryuji (though he was psychic to begin with.)
Strangely, in the second film Sadako’s appearance isn’t due to the cursed tape. Sadako only appears after Mai manifests her fear into a reality, which happens to be Sadako. It’s probably why she didn’t really kill anybody in the film, since she wasn’t there from the curse but rather because Mai had summoned her.
In Ringu 2, Sadako shows her “face” which is covered by a death mask. (For some reason I thought it was her waterlogged corpse, it is not.)
Tumblr media
The Dead by Daylight chapter “Sadako Rising” is semi-canon. Of course it’s not canon as it is a video game crossover, however instead of just grabbing Sadako and throwing her into the game they wrote a continuation of the original story, following Yoichi after he had grown up. Whilst it can’t be regarded as canon due to it being for a different game, you could interpret Yoichi’s lore as canon since we never see him again after Ringu 2.
An April Fools joke was made, featuring a meme poster of “Sadako VS Kayako” which parodied “Batman V Superman”, which was coming out that year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despite initially being an April Fool’s joke, it garnered enough attention and they actually made the film lmao. Also it has really weird marketing??? Lmao??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spoilers I guess, but the film ends with Sadako and Kayako merging into one being, this being “Sadakaya.” As a fusion she takes elements from both characters. Her hair covers her face, she is wearing a white dress and she is standing, which is taken from Sadako, however she is also stumbling wildly, has her arms up and is doing a death-rattle, which is taken from Kayako. Their curses even merge, with it now being the tape shows Sadakaya in Kayako’s haunted house instead of at Sadako’s well.
Tumblr media
So far there is only 2 official ways to defeat Sadako. The first is the most well known, simply copy the tape and show somebody else, cursing them but saving yourself. The second way however, is to watch the tape at least once before your deadline, as it resets the clock sorta. So if you watch the tape once a week you’re good. Kinda.
The American remake changed a LOT about Sadako, and the film in general, which has skewed the general public’s knowledge of Sadako and her curse. Next few points are the key differences:
In the original film, Sadako was 19 when she was killed. She continued to somehow age down there, meaning she is around 30 during Ringu. In the American remake, they de-aged Sadako to a child for some reason.
In the original film, the phone only rang if you were in Cabin B4. If you watched the tape anywhere else you never received a phone call. In the American remake the whole phone call thing is part of the curse, and is how you find out you’ve been cursed in the first place.
In the original film, Sadako used a TV to manifest once, using it to kill Ryuji only. In the American remake, the TV seems to be built into the curse, and it’s a guarantee that if you are cursed, you die by TV.
Sadako and Samara’s pasts are like, completely different. In Ringu, Sadako’s parents were a famous psychic and a doctor studying psychics. Because of this, Sadako grew up knowing she had psychic abilities (just wasn’t sure the extent of her powers) and Sadako didn’t die until she was 19, when she was killed by her psychiatrist. In The Ring, Samara was the daughter of some random woman who tried to kill her as a baby before she was adopted by some horse-breeders with nobody knowing she had powers, or knowing where they came from. Sadako’s adoptive mother was the one who killed her in the remake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the original film, Sadako wasn’t entirely malevolent nor did she really have any goals. Her rage created the curse, and anybody stupid enough to watch it would be killed in 7 days unless they copied the tape and that was really it. She isn’t morally good, as she is killing people, but she’s also not unfair nor does she explicitly enjoy killing. In the American remake, Samara appears to be way more malicious and though she still has a sad backstory, even before she’s killed and becomes a vengeful ghost she seems to be fine with killing people. Sadako’s backstory was tragic because she could’ve lived a normal life if it wasn’t for the people in her life, but Samara was basically doomed to be evil no matter what which is tragic in a different way but still. Samara also has a set goal and motive. Whilst Sadako just kills people who were cursed, using it as a way to stay “alive” despite being technically dead, Samara aims to be reincarnated which she actually achieves.
Back to random fun facts! If Sadako was still alive today, she would be 73 (2024.) Sadako’s ghost stopped aging at around 30, but she’s been around for 73 years.

So Sadako was trending on Twitter because of a meme, and people were joking about how Sadako would kill you without being near a TV and as a Ringu enthusiast I had to info-dump so here we are.
Everybody knows the iconic curse is that if you watch the video tape, a phone rings and you have 7 days until Sadako climbs out of a TV and kills you… Well, this isn’t actually the case. Sadako’s curse is actually only the tape part and the 7 days. The phone ringing was only if you were in Cabin B4, the reason for this was because that cabin was in the original location of the well Sadako died in. If you watched the tape anywhere else you wouldn’t get a phone call, but you still got cursed. As for the TV, the only person in the original films to die that way was Ryuji, and this was only because he was near the TV and Sadako is a “nensha” and used the TV to easily project herself to kill him. Every other time Sadako killed somebody, (which wasn’t even a lot) she usually just appeared. Now again, Sadako is a nensha so whenever she “appears” it’s usually through a TV monitor, but it should be noted that Sadako herself rarely actually appears, and usually her appearances are limited to the cursed video appearing on a TV screen. I mean, technically Sadako doesn’t ever actually appear since she’s always just a projection of herself, and she’s obviously dead so physically shes just a corpse… anyway. Sadako can kill people either way heartaches without the use of a TV, hell she doesn’t even need to be manifested to do so. Now, Sadako’s curse rules are very lenient as sometimes Sadako kills people who didn’t even watch the tape, or she just changes the rules whenever she wants. In the OG films the only way to save yourself was to copy the tape and show somebody else, but then this was stopped and in the latest film when you watch it once between every deadline you’re good, but then again, Sadako being Sadako she tries to stop you from doing this.
So to answer Twitter’s question, if you were cursed by Sadako and the only TV nearby was that one super high off the ground, Sadako wouldn’t give a shit and would either give you an instant heart attack without bothering to manifest herself, or would use literally any other device with an image (including photographs) to manifest herself. Hell, if you’re lucky, she might teleport you to a secluded location and kill you there. (I know the meme is just for fun, but I can infodump for fun so shhh, let me have this.)

Thinking about how the Evil Dead game was shot dead not even a year after release (A rant.)
I remember the announcement for the game a year prior and all the trailers and stuff, bro I was so hyped. They got almost every actor back to play their original characters, the game looked fantastic, the gameplay was awesome and they promised DLC and addons, it literally could not fail…
Then they released it, went radio silent for a few months and yes, they did release DLC and skins but despite having something from every film in the franchise, it was pretty obvious Army of Darkness and Ash VS Evil Dead was their priority.
Any time a new skin came out, it was always for either AOD or AVED characters. There was only 1 DLC that wasn’t for those, and it was a clothing pack for the 1981 characters that released the same day as the game, meaning it wasn’t even really an actual DLC it was always there. Every character added was from Army of Darkness or the TV show and it got old fast. I understand licensing is a big issue, but as somebody who doesn’t like the show or Army of Darkness as much as the rest of the franchise, it got real annoying to see a new DLC coming out and of course, it’s for the AOD/AVED characters.
Out of all the DLC released for this game only 2 was from something other than AOD/AVED. The skins for the 1981 characters and the addition of Mia and David from the 2013 remake. I’m glad they got DLC at all, you could argue technically Evil Dead 2 got DLC because of Savini Ash but Savini Ash was both unrelated to Evil Dead 2 AND a bonus if you bought a t-shirt… bruh.
Let me break it down, in a simple chart.
Here’s all the films in the franchise, and here’s how much content they got (characters, skins…)
The Evil Dead: 4 (Ash, Cheryl, Scotty, + the Classics Bundle.)
Evil Dead 2: 5 (Ash, Ed, Annie, Henrietta, + Savini Ash.)
Army of Darkness: 10 (Ash, Arthur, Henry, Blacksmith, Evil Ash, Witch + the Medieval Bundle, the Galliant Knight Outfit, the S-Mart Employee Outfit, the Hail to the King Bundle.)
Evil Dead: 2 (Mia, David.)
Ash VS Evil Dead: 9 (Ash, Pablo, Kelly, Ruby, Brock, Eligos, Baal, the Immortal Power Bundle, Who’s your Daddy Bundle.)
So yeah, AOD and Ash VS Evil Dead got way more characters and cosmetics than the rest of the franchise, and that count wasn’t even including what was individually in each bundle. It’s so fucking crazy, because I don’t hate those films, they aren’t bad but the most popular Evil Dead films (1 and 2) got hardly anything whilst those ones got more than they needed. It’s so frustrating too, because most of the cosmetics aren’t even things they really wore and are original pieces, whilst characters like Cheryl and Mia HAD other clothes they’d worn that could’ve been added and just weren’t.
I know I’m ranting but, I adored this game, I 100% completed the trophy’s and I wasn’t all too mad about the clear favour towards AOD and AVED because it was only the first year, and I knew we’d get more stuff down the line, especially when a new Evil Dead film had just released, there was a good chance those characters would be added to the game to capitalise off of the films hype and then-
After months of nothing, and one lousy interview where it was stated that the devotees had stuff they were planning on adding (which aged like milk), we finally get a post and it’s:
“We’re stopping production of this game.”
Sure the game wasn’t “killed” I guess, unlike Friday the 13th, the game was still playable and enjoyable and the servers still worked but when your game is already losing popularity due to lack of communication or content, then the way to solve it isn’t to stop working on it but to instead actually add content. Again, the game is still playable to this day but lobby’s are so hard to get into because nobody except for die hard fans play this game anymore and this announcement was basically the developers giving up. They didn’t end on a good note, they’d lost a bunch of players and their last DLC was for a character nobody wanted and for a character people did want but his execution was horrible. Anybody who wanted to give the game a shot, or even people who still played were let down by this message because it meant there was nothing. The game is repetitive and when nobody else is playing and you know nothing is coming, why would you buy it? Why would you want to get really into it if you know it’ll crash and burn like F13 and soon nobody will be playing and nobody will care.
I strongly believe that if they’d spent less time adding fandesign skins for that one character in Army of Darkness, and more time working on actual new content the game would’ve lasted longer. I mean, for fucks sake they only had 5 demons in the game as opposed to the 17 or so heroes. Hero lobby’s were so bad because the hero gameplay was really good and fun, and of course people want to play Ash, so queue times took forever, whilst demon lobby’s were instant because nobody played demon. Again, there was only 5 demons, and only 2 of them were actually popular characters. Admittedly, there aren’t a lot of demons to add, but the fact that the 2013 bundle came with a minor character from Army of Darkness instead of, oh I don’t know, the demon from the 2013 film is weird.
It was so bad for demon players because whilst heroes got to choose literally anybody, demons got 5 choices, 3 if they didn’t buy any DLC. Heroes were so favoured, each DLC would give you a random ass character instead of a new demon. “Here have the Blacksmith from the background of Army of Darkness.”
If they’d just added the Abomination or the Marauder it would’ve helped, but no.
Anyways, rant over, games still fun but I can’t really find myself enjoying it since every time I play I’m reminded that this game was put down only a year after release.
