He’s not dead, but he’s not alive either. There’s no way he’s living; actually, if he took religion more seriously like his mom then he’d think this place is Purgatory. A place where all of his sins are judged while he waits to go to Heaven or Hell.
Time isn’t real here.
The sky only has two looks. The inky black of night and the hazy red of day, but he’s not sure how many hours there are in daytime here. Not that he’s awake anyway. He has to keep vigilant when it’s dark to fight anything that comes prowling his way and then sleep when the sky is the color of dried blood on paper. So, he’s not sure how long he’s been here. Long enough for the wounds to close and to walk to California and back.
California wasn’t home anymore.
The beach is barren and there’s no water where the beaches once were.
Home is where he left kids to defend themselves against it. Something far bigger than he imagined Maxine to get involved in.

since dacre said they moved to hawkins because neil wanted to get billy away from his mum got me thinking.
because early season 2 max and billy blamed each other for the move. but if billy's mum was the reason, then why?
i believe neil never told them why they moved. so the siblings started assuming things.
what if max did catch billy with a boy, she was so shocked she ran off.
billy knew he caught her, but he was so confident she wouldn't rat him out.
but then they were moving.
billy assumed max told him.
but max? she blames billy because of course it's always him. she would have learned early on neil does most things he does because of billy.
