OC questionnaire!
Thank you @decaying-rose-petals for the tag!
Iāve chosen a few characters of mine to answer your prompts. Theyāre each from different class levels in their societyāand theyāre named, too!
Theyāll speak for themselves, but Iāll also be butting into their answers with my own commentary.
My questions are:
1. How do you feel about yourself?
2. What was your childhood like?
3. Is there something youāre really proud of?
Imp
1. āIām an essential piece of this ecosystem, friend. Iāve wondered who I am since I was picking grass, and now I know: Iām a benevolent virus. Reborn in the stomach this oppressive monsterānot through it, but in spite against it. To fight it. Because theyāll never tell me who I am to be.ā
Itās all about The Cause, with this one. From what I can tell, they never switch off.
2. āMy suther* died before I learned how to dodge a bottle. My kether* kept me on my toes. When I learned how to read, I started seeing all the sinister little cracks in our great nation. It got me acting up, until I got caught. Good-old Kad* set me up for time in the dungeons. They got these chains that age you up faster. My youth came and went faster than most anyone I know. Bums you out, donāt it?ā
* āSutherā and āketherā are the formal terms for parents of particular respective genders. They tend to go by se/ser/sers and ke/ker/kis pronouns, respectively. āKadā is the informal term for a kether. Iāll tell you more about it in another post.
3. āIām proud of myself whenever I manage to cut against the grain. Like how I got out of the dungeons. Itās awfully satisfying. And Iām proud of Pupil. Heās a scary-bright kid, and heās got that Thing; That phenomenon where you think of what youāve gotta do and you just do it. Some folks lose that when they get older.ā
Imp is pretty focused. You can see why they and Pupil might like to work with one another, yes?
Pupil
1. āI know what Iām talking about, I know what Iām doing.
Iāve been told Iām not great with people, but I think Iām just not great with people whoā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ are idiots.ā
Contrary to popular belief, Pupil has friends. Unfortunately, only one of them attends his school. The others are shopkeepers or vagrants.
And he doesnāt actually take to the commonly defeatist āsmart vs dumbā rhetoric. But when he believes someone is thoughtless or ignorant or conformist, he likes to call them an idiot. It is a fun word, after all.
2. āLess-than-stellar. Neither of my parents are around very much. Theyāre both in government. They pay a few folks to come watch us, or take us to school.
But for every birthday since nine, I received more and more responsibility over the others.
At night my parents are still busy, both until and after dinner. Donāt mind us, youād only be out of a job without us.*ā
* Pupil is referring to the fact that citizens of this nation earn the privilege to engage with society by proving their fertility (i.e. having at least one child, the more the better). No one ever says it outright, but a thing need not be spoken to be enforced. Life and the harnessing of it are very big in their nationās culture and religion.
3. āIām proud whenever Iāve done a good job, or whenever I get to slight someone who looks down on meā¦ā¦
I guess Iām proud of the other kids. I donāt look in on them much. But when I do, theyāre very interesting and inspiring.ā
Pupil has two younger siblings. More on them at another time.
I like that his when Pupilās name is in purple text, it seems like a misspelling of the colorās name.
Frame
1. āI quite like myself, I guess. I donāt really think about it, so much as I think about the day. And my mother.
Mother says our family is the greatest, bestest family in all the world. Can you believe it? In the world!! How lucky is that! Iām very grateful.ā
Sheās grinning ear-to-ear, by the way.
2. āI had a wonderful childhood. Mother would read stories to me and my siblings before bed. Father would play with us in the garden while Mother workedā¦.. One thing I never understood is: Most everyone has called me āoddā since I was very little. Usually when I would go run off with the other girlsā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦.
But beyond that, our life has always been so exciting to me. My brother gets to be a godly* someday! Heāll get married to someone pretty from far away, and eat at the end of the table instead of the side.
He could take up any land he sees and it would all be hisāHe doesnāt really like land so much, but he could do it! Even if all he wants to do is just look at it for a little while! And he could declare war with anyone who sets foot on it!
It all sounds so charming.ā
* āGodlyā is a title given to the one who sits on the throne, per the belief that their family line isāand by extension, they areāappointed by a god.
And not every adult refers to Frame as āoddā. Her parents certainly do.
3. āIām proud to be born into this family. Itās really such an honor. Our castle is beautiful, my entire family is beautiful, Iām beautifulāvery happy about that.
But even all our citizens are beautiful! Everyone I see, I just want to stare at themā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦.. just look at them, you know? Especially other girls, theyāre ever so pretty. I wish I didnāt have to blink so I could look without stopping, but I do have to blink, so I canāt do that. I also have to look away once in a while, otherwise people become a bit shaken up.ā
She was staring during the pause, to demonstrate. Her eyes are typically opened āas wide as the laws of this world will permitā, as her mother puts it.
This! Was! Very fun. I will be softly tagging @thevioletdaffodil @spideronthesun @apolline-lucy @calamityeden @cruelflesh @unrepentantcheeseaddict and anyone else who wants to try their hand!
Your questions:
1. What tempts you?
2. What environment would you/do you tend to thrive in?
3. What is your most closely-held belief?
