This initiative was enforced with severe and cruel penalties; in fact, the mother of the country’s national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, was forced to traverse hundreds of miles on foot after she refused to use her assigned surname of Realonda.Â
I typed in “Filipino Spanish names” and this was one of the articles that popped up.

Several years ago, I went to see a show at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. It was a puppet play and had a couple of people on stage. Anyways I sat in the audience and noticed a familiar actor. I’ve seen him on YouTube and he performs in the Winnipeg Fringe every single year with his troupe. I decided to go up to him and tell him that I was a fan, that I loved his work that I especially saw his videos about being vegan. I didn’t even get a chance to complete a sentence when he turns to me and says,
“I’m sorry I just don’t understand your culture.”
He turned his back and ignored me. I was absolutely stunned at this. I didn’t know how else to react so I got up and I went back to my seat, totally distracted by what had happened. I enjoy the play, but how that actor treated me was racist. At some point later on around 2020. I saw he posted a black square on his Instagram about Black Lives Matter. Either he had changed his ways or it was performative, but I was offended that he thought he could get away with being seen as anti-racist. I have been treated worse but this definitely makes the list.

Normally I’m fortunate to do just one film a year. I have more lines in this one; I’m still excited about the outcome.

Thank you, Joseph!
Typing out “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat” seemed tiresome, so I’ll phrase it as JATATDC.
Thanks to the cast and crew of this show! I love you all!
