The back of “Dos Mujeres” features signatures abound, signed at a celebration when Kahlo sold the painting (her first sale!) in July 1929. There’s also an inscription that reads “in memory of a very special evening with the author of the painting,” because we shouldn’t forget that Kahlo was a painter, and that selling this canvas was a point of professional pride, not simply the act that introduced her pain to the world. . Episode 39 Bonus: Nicholaes Eliasz’s “Portrait of Maria Joachimsdr. Swartenhont (1627, located at the @rijksmuseum), and an appropriate foil to explore just what Rembrandt changed. Eliasz has been the portraitist sheriff in town until Rembrandt arrived in Amsterdam, bringing with him a kind of soft touch that artists with even as impeccable a brushstroke as Eliasz could only dream of. Compare this portrait to Aeltje: it’s similarly “perfect” but in an airbrushed, slightly oily kind of way, like her skin was molded from putty and glazed with an SPF.
