Okay, so there’s admittedly a lot going on in this screen grab, but child sex trafficking amongst royals notwithstanding, the takeaway is that my dear mother-in-law recommended my podcast to Rosie O’Donnell, and Rosie “ya think there are men in this country who ain’t seen ya bosoms?” O’Donnell loved it. 🤩 https://www.instagram.com/p/B1WngDEFaLz/?igshid=hxa3zc294zbq

Episode 40 Bonus: when do we ever get to see the back of a painting, and whenever is that back so grand? The back of “Dos Mujeres” features signatures abound, signed at a celebration when Kahlo sold the painting (her first sale!) in July 1929. There’s also an inscription that reads “in memory of a very special evening with the author of the painting,” because we shouldn’t forget that Kahlo was a painter, and that selling this canvas was a point of professional pride, not simply the act that introduced her pain to the world. . And speaking of getting beneath the frame, enjoy this infrared glimpse beneath the paint, where we see evidence of Kahlo having painted an apron on the maid, and then choosing to paint it out—sometimes there’s more dignity in not calling attention to the evidence of the work, even if you’re reinforcing the nobility of the work itself. . 🔗to episode in bio. . #fridakahlo #frida #kahlo #mfaboston #mexicanart #mexicanpainting #partytime #excellent #podcast #arthistorypodcast (at Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0ZBkigFUBk/?igshid=u8lyx4aya32d

Episode 40 Bonus: Kahlo’s “Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird” (1940, @universityoftexasaustin), a.k.a. when Kahlo’s iconic mixture of outsider aesthetic naivety, indigenous Mexican and Catholic symbolism, and wee spider monkeys (a gift from recent-temporary-ex Rivera) finds itself in full bloom. 🐒 . 🔗to episode in bio. . #fridakahlo #kahlo #frida #mexicanart #outsiderart #monkey #hummingbird #modernart #diegorivera #podcast #arthistory #arthistorypodcast #portrait #podcastersofinstagram #thelonelypalette (at The University of Texas at Austin) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0WgDHVllbj/?igshid=1lkuphh8qz9bv

Episode 40 Bonus: Kahlo’s famous double self-portrait, “The Two Fridas” (1939, located at @museodeartemoderno), depicting Kahlo at the junction between her myriad two selves: a Mexican and European upbringing (hence the Victorian and Mexican clothing), a wife and a divorcée (the Mexican Frida holds a tiny portrait of Diego Rivera, from whom Kahlo had divorced the year prior), and even, in her words, her own relationship with a childhood friend. Symbolic elements of Kahlo’s paintings can always feel like an enigma wrapped in a riddle wrapped in a unibrow, but here, what’s crystal clear is the sense of ambivalence, of that space between spaces, and, on a certain level, accepting the ambiguity. The two Fridas each have their own beating hearts, tenuously connected by easily snipped blood vessels, and yet are clasping hands regardless. . 🔗to episode in bio. . #fridakahlo #kahlo #diegorivera #thetwofridas #museumofmodernartmexicocity #mexicanart #doubleportrait #painting #modernart #podcast #arthistory #arthistorypodcast #podcastersofinstagram #thelonelypalette https://www.instagram.com/p/B0QyVxElFKR/?igshid=6xs43et1jtkp

Episode 40 Bonus: the life and love of Frida and Diego, the marriage between an elephant and a dove, the fiery, tumultuous, affair-riddled, can’t live with or without you love that puts Carrie and Big’s “inconvenient” and Meredith and Derek’s “save the last piece of cheesecake” love to utter shame. It’s thrilling and informative to watch their relationship evolve through her work and their own public image: this Kahlo wedding canvas, “Frieda and Diego Rivera” (1931, @sfmoma), depicts Kahlo as the teeny-footed wife of the master mural painter, clutching Rivera as he holds the palette and brushes. But slowly you start to see her emerge from his shadow, even when some of her most famous canvases reference him and her heartbreak in one way or another (but what pop star hasn’t gotten famous on his or her own merit doing the same?). What can be said for sure about the “strange fire” between these two crazy kids is how deeply they informed one another’s work and lives, and how, even through a divorce, a remarrying, and her own grim, sickly end, they couldn’t really live without one another—her illness worsened whenever they were estranged; Rivera died only three short years after Kahlo did. . 🔗episode in bio! . #fridakahlo #diegorivera #mexicanart #twentiethcenturyart #weddingportrait #modernart #inconvenientlove #cheesecake #greysanatomy #sexandthecity #podcast #arthistory #arthistorypodcast #thelonelypalette (at SFMOMA San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0Lv9fnF_FD/?igshid=72wbzug726tt

These hotties. 🚀🌔 #Repost @mfaboston ・・・ Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the #MoonLanding with this image of astronauts Michael Collins, Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong by @yousuf_karsh_official. Armstrong and Aldrin spent approximately two and a half hours on the lunar surface while @astromichaelcollins piloted the spacecraft in the moon’s orbit. #YousufKarsh photographed the Apollo 11 crew at the @nasa Manned Spacecraft Center shortly after their return to Earth. However, in accordance with the Extra-Terrestrial Exposure Law, he had to wait while the crew spent three weeks in quarantine as a precaution against any potential lunar organisms. #Apollo50 https://www.instagram.com/p/B0KZx3sl_un/?igshid=1o4qejldfs0h3

Episode 40 Bonus: Problematic? Reductive? Cringeworthy? Boy howdy, yes. But entirely of its time and wholly unaware (well, until you actually read the article) of who Frida Kahlo would ultimately become later in her career and, explosively, after her death? Completely. Castigate poor Florence Davies of The Detroit News if you must, but also consider how you’d go about this assignment yourself, interviewing a woman with a laugh as big and bold and impishly gleeful as Frida’s. . 🔗in bio. . #fridakahlo #kahlo #thedetroitnews #florencedavies #mexicanart #diegorivera #newspaper #glee #dabbling #wife https://www.instagram.com/p/B0I-O7EFL-n/?igshid=1ppkuo9rhdxr5

Pre-game for this week’s episode on #fridakahlo’s “Dos Mujeres” by listening back to episode 16, when #vincentvangogh painted a similarly affectionate portrait of his caretaker, the Postman Joseph Roulin (@mfaboston) heightened the nobility of the working class, and made us realize there’s more to these notoriously pain-addled artists than just, you know, fetishizing their pain all the time. . Episode 39 Bonus: Nicholaes Eliasz’s “Portrait of Maria Joachimsdr. Swartenhont (1627, located at the @rijksmuseum), and an appropriate foil to explore just what Rembrandt changed. Eliasz has been the portraitist sheriff in town until Rembrandt arrived in Amsterdam, bringing with him a kind of soft touch that artists with even as impeccable a brushstroke as Eliasz could only dream of. Compare this portrait to Aeltje: it’s similarly “perfect” but in an airbrushed, slightly oily kind of way, like her skin was molded from putty and glazed with an SPF. When held up to Aeltje’s delicate, feather-touch wrinkles, there’s really no comparison. . #rembrandt #dutchpainting #rembrandtvanrijn #dutchgoldenage #thelonelypalette #podcast #arthistorypodcast #arthistory #nicholaeseliaszoon #portraiture #genrepainting #rijksmuseum #podcastersofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/BzA7vxrFc1j/?igshid=1g5vx65xyyx0z
