Joan of Ark: Brainstorming
Okay so I went down a YouTube rabbit hole and have decided that I want to write a fanfic about Joan of Arc preventing the apocalypse. According to wikipedia, she was visited by the Archangel Michael, Saint Catherine of Alexandria and Saint Margaret. I doubt Michael would willingly help prevent the apocalypse, so I'm gonna have to figure out what his involvement in this fic is.
There are ~several~ fascinating things about Joan and her story that I feel can be twisted to fit within the SPN mythology. One interesting thing about Joan, to me, is actually her mother, Isabelle. Isabelle was known to be a very devout woman. Which reminds me of this.
Tumblr media
She was called Isabelle Romée because she went on a pilgrimage to Rome (as a woman! In the 14th/15th century!) and that seems like Jimmy (who deserved better) sticking his hand in a pot of boiling water to prove his faith (I couldn't find a good gif so just imagine that).
I can see Joan being the Righteous (Wo)man. Thing is, I don't want Isabelle or Joan to be vessels (at least, if they are, I don't want Joan to spend the fic chained to a comet, so she's going to say no). I want them to be human. SPN, to me, is a story about the Winchesters (humanity) being f*cked with by the Supernatural (specifically, Angels).
I kind of want to mirror the Winchesters, too. John went to hell to save Dean, Dean went to hell to save Sam. John could have been the righteous man, and I can see Isabelle (who irl worked her entire life to protect Joan's reputation after she was executed) filling a similar role.
Also, I'm totally making Joan queer. She cross-dressed. She led soldiers. She prevented her father from marrying her off by swearing to remain a virgin (which seem like things a queer woman would do in a religious, patriarchal time period who also is attempting to prevent an apocalypse).
I found a (long-ass) transcript of her trial, and I've been reading through that (because I'm a sucker for research I guess) for more ideas.
Also, spoiler, but Joan dies. Historically, she had an insane run of success, eventually crowning Charles VII the King of France. But after this, she had a few slip ups, eventually getting captured and sold to the English. And, well, she was burnt at the stake in 1431 around the age of 19. I'm going to have to figure out the logistics of this, but I want her to go to hell and then be "raised from perdition" like Dean.
I've always loved Ruby (yeah I know she got Sam addicted to demon blood but still! She's a fascinating character), so maybe I'll make human!Ruby a character. Possibly a love interest?
In 1455 the her trial/ruling was appealed, and in 1456 she was declared innocent. I'm not sure if this is relevant to my fic but I have an inkling that maybe this could be interesting to include in some way.
I'm not sure if this is interesting to anyone else, but I do want to write this. If anyone knows a lot about Joan of Ark/Catholicism in general hmu because I'm Mormon and don't know much about Catholic theology.
