Riko’s eyes are red-rimmed and puffy when you finally see her. Hiroto sits next to her, face set into straight, emotionless lines. There’s a plastic cup of water in his hands, held out to a hiccuping Riko.

It worried you once, your eldest son who seldom spoke and smiled even less. You wondered if you had done something wrong, unknowingly damaged him in a way only you and your lack of parental experience could. Riko had been an easy child, full of smiles and laughter. The occasional altercation with Satoru, and an easily forgotten tantrum here and there, but underneath it all was a strong willed personality you marveled that could outwill the best of them.
