17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic?

I read a lot about Romani laws of cleanliness and social purity (uzo is one word, but Romani has a lot of dialects and there are others). Mostly I didn't choose to use this in fic, mostly because I didn't want to give the appearance that I was actually attempting to represent Romani culture. But the taboo on touching women's skirts that Inej mentions in Child Ballad is shared by many Roma (as well as other cultures).

18. What’s one of your favorite lines you’ve written in a fic?

Normally for this question I would reach for something earnest but please accept this horny exchange from Dark Water:

"Doll," he says softly, and his voice hums against her skin. "I wanna commit a little crime, doll."

He breathes on her again, just in case she couldn't guess which obscenity code he means to violate. "Well," she says, swallowing, "we already broke the speed limit."

20. What’s a favorite title for a fic you’ve written?

While Child Ballad always makes me smile because it is such a dumb joke, I think Serves You Right is probably the best match between a title and a fic, and it captures the mood very well.

17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic?

For Hearts Starve I learned about the Merther Rising! Also the operations of Welsh coal pits, as per a few instructive website from Welsh universities. Did you know that prior to the earliest child-labor laws, it was common to send children around six into the mines to crawl along airshafts only they could fit through? Then they raised the working age to ten, and they started operating the air vents with cords. Which seems like something they should have thought of earlier.

21. Have you ever deleted an entire scene after spending hours laboring over it? If so, why?

Not usually an entire scene, because the most common reason I cut things is that it becomes clear that the scene won’t move into the next one the way I want it to. But I get pretty far and it’s frustrating. (I do also sometimes delete scenes from the outline, but that’s different.)

Okay so you may not believe this but Child Ballad was actually supposed to have this whole other bit of plot, where Inej stays away from Kaz while she's pregnant because he's pissed her off.

“He worries, is all,” Specht says. “Only natural, isn’t it?”

Inej opens a lantern and touches the letter to the flame. She stands before Specht in silence, letting it burn down and down in her hand until she drops a burning cinder on the deck and stubbs it out with her boot.

“Brekker gets no more letters from you.”

He looks at her face, and his goes carefully blank. “Aye, Captain.”

To Kaz she writes one line.

What is a fic idea you've had that you'll probably never write?

I got this twice, from what I assume is the same anonymous person? It looks increasingly like I’ll never write my Andor-era Kanej SW AU, where he’s a mercenary who lets her on his ship after she breaks out of the brothel she’s held it when she figures out he’s working for the Rebellion. The plot was elaborate and grim, possibly a Major Character Death thing, and I was toying with the idea of writing it in screenplay format. So the abandonment is probably for the best.

"Not beating the ___ allegations" is such a 'now' turn of phrase, implying as it does a world where everyone's behavior is always on literal trial by a guilt-presuming judge and jury that consists of anyone who happens to be paying attention.
