Avoiding whitewashing in human!wc aus
Human aus are a lot of fun and a challenging alternative to drawing cats, but this can come with its fair share of problems - especially with the never ending list of scum bag characters the Warriors Universe has to offer. Here are some tips and resources for avoiding whitewashing and other forms of colorism and racism in your designs.
What is whitewashing?
First to avoid something, it's important to understand what it is. Whitewashing is defined as using white as a go to or a default, especially in casting and yes, in your human au designs. Itâs giving a majority of your characters the face of the white man, especially when theyâre portrayed as people of color or have no canon race.
The White Savior trope -
The white savior trope is defined as a white character saving people of color from their struggles (A good example is Milo in Disney's Journey to Atlantis). This trope is racist because it implies that nonwhite people need a white leader to show them the right way and to save them. With this in mind, it's obvious that characters like Firestar or the Three shouldn't be white characters, especially if they stand alongside nonwhite villains.
Why shouldn't villains be nonwhite?
Because the association of the tropes with villainy doesn't help combat much of anything except progress. Having your villain be nonwhite adds to the dehumanization of people of color. If the villain of your story is non white and none of your protagonists are, you really need to take a look at why. Furthermore, there's a 99.9% chance that you making say, Tigerstar or Darkstripe nonwhite feeds into nasty stereotypes.
But it's not about race!
It is about race when you take murderous, manipulative antagonists and give them the face and features of people of color. It is when you tape our identity over villainy without thinking about it's impact. Whether you mean to be racist or not, having white as the default for your good characters says something. Racism isn't always as blatant as you think it it, sometimes it's simply a villain with a big nose or a humanization with dreads.
I don't know how to draw people of color.
Use irl references! Google, and practice practice practice. Not knowing is no excuse to not try - no one grows as an artist by sticking to what you know. Here's a blog that will help you learn more about the proper portrayal of people of color in literature and here's their very convenient list of stereotypes and tropes to avoid. Here's another website with nonwhite face claims and a blog that features models of color, a blog that focuses on avoiding the whitewashing of aesthetics, and finally, here's a very important tip:
Drawing people and then just simply coloring them brown is a shortcut
Give your nonwhite characters the proper features!!!! Curly hair, thick lips and different headshapes and noses! There are eye colors other than very light blue! Experiment and try new things, don't just draw a white person with white features, color em brown and call it a day.
Tldr: Using white as your default race is racist, even if you have one or two designs that feature nonwhite characters. Making villains people of color in a primarily white cast is racist and perpetuates gross stereotypes.

Iâve thought that Lifeboat from Heathers fit how Runningnose must have felt in ShadowClan after Yellowfang and the elders were exiled.
