Halcyon Cave

About the design:

My first visualization of Halcyon's resting place after the Prologue, a cave with a path of orange poppy flowers which glow in the dark. A pair of golden wings hang above the arch made from a tree grown by Basile. Golden flowers bloom near the wings, as if they were dyed by its radiance. Luminescent orange orbs decorate the cave's interior and can guide the lost back to the entrance. The many stalactites and stalagmites resemble teeth, which along with the orbs can make the cave look like a many-eyed creature. This place is located somewhere in the Underworld where it is perpetually day time.

The art style is a bit messy since this is my first time drawing without a sketch and also using my finger to draw on mobile (ibisPaint X). The wings could be bigger and less awkward, and the lighting and shading could be improved with practice.

It only took one meme-ish post, but they're both here! Meet the current designs of my OCs Halcyon and Kato.

About the designs:

Halcyon has gold details in reference to the halcyon days meaning golden days. The piece on his shoulder is a gold-plated magnet, which ties in with his ability of controlling electricity. He's better at electricity on a micro scale, so rather than electrocution he specializes in bioelectricity instead.

Kato's cloak is completely made of metal so they can mould and shape it however they want. Since they're constantly using their ability on it, its shape can be affected by their emotions. They have a tail-like appendage at the base of their head which they can sharpen the blades on the end, and their emotions also affect its movement.

Been tagged by @agirlandherquill for my first OC Question Tag! Thanks for keeping my brain juice flowing.

It's nice to get a brief interview with my characters every once in a while. We'll be talking to Basile(Basil) and Halcyon(Hal) this time while Kato is off being busy.

1. Who is your greatest enemy?

Hal: Alas, hell hath no fury like a certain unyielding passage. Bestowed upon thee who exist in this realm, change is imminent. Faced with such power, thou must-

Basil: Alright, back to sleep you go flower bud. What he means to say, is that the writer's plans for an antagonist isn't really a who, more of a concept like Time.

2. What would you do if you lost everything?

Basil: I've been through this before, but the circumstances forced both our actions at the time. Besides, I knew they weren't gone forever. Hal was in a comatose state and Kato needed to regain their memories anyway, but I must admit, it took a while to develop some healthier coping mechanisms. Though if I were to lose it all again, I might just take a dip in the River Lethe just to forget. I know I wasn't the only one who suffered loss, but you weren't really all that conscious after all that were you, droplet?

Hal: Nope, but you were the only one left to deal with the aftermath while we tapped out. For me, everything just felt mushy and foggy. Those memories feel so far away now...

3. Why should the world fear you?

Hal: We're old as dirt. Fear the elderly.

Basil: Nothing is a secret to me. NOTHING.

Halcyon's piece!

Hal is either in his bodiless era, or he just doesn't feel like having a body right now. This place is located in the Underworld, it is a cave with poppy flowers growing on the inside with a poppy field outside which is inspired by Hypnos's cave in Greek mythology. Water from the River Lethe flows from the branches at the entrance, so one must be careful lest their memory be lost to oblivion (don't worry it's diluted). The soul butterflies are attracted to calm souls. Upside down torches are placed as decoration, and as a memento left by Hal's twin Kato. Each of them have left their respective mementos here, the torches from Kato, the dripping branches from Halcyon and the poppy flowers from Basile.

I decided to digitally paint over some old artworks I have of Kato and Halcyon (my OCs) laying around.

Kato on their first journey into the Underworld. They're sitting on a floating tree branch from their collection(they love collecting unique items). Halcyon and Basile are not with them since they stumbled upon a certain Path by accident and wanted to do a little solo exploration.

So...I've been tagged by @agirlandherquill who was tagged by @katwritesshit to participate in a tag game from @halfbakedspuds, so here goes!

Rules: Answer as many (or as few) of the questions about your WIP as you can.

1. What was the first part of your WIP that you created?

The Prologue, featuring Kato(Death, Psychopomp, Thanatos), Halcyon(Sleep, Hypnos) and Basile(World, Hades, Persephone) dubbed The Old World Trio because they're the only beings from the Old World who still exist in the New World. The first location I visualised was the Border, which is where souls go before being taken to the Underworld.

2. If your story was a TV show, what would the intro song be?

[The Main Character by Will Wood] I love this song and it fits Kato's personality very well, especially during the Prologue. I can imagine Kato, Halcyon and Basile singing this together with Kato playing the Piano.

3. Who are your favourite character(s) and why?

My favourite has to be Kato, since they're the first character I ever created so I have lots of fond memories of going about developing their character. Halcyon came later as Kato's twin, and I grew to love their dynamic as siblings who then formed a found family with Basile. Halcyon would call Kato out on their bullshit and keep them in check while Basile is the reliable rock of the group.

4. What other pieces of media could share a fan base with your WIP?

Some Rise of the TMNT fans may notice some similarities between Leo and Donnie's dynamic (the disaster twins) and Kato with Halcyon. I did base some of their personalities on the duo, Kato being Leo and Halcyon being Donnie, so that's not a surprise. There's also a found family dynamic (and FANTASY :D), so I think fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Ninjago could like the Prologue too!

5. What has been your biggest struggle while writing your WIP?

Coming up with names! I really struggled with naming everyone, especially Kato because I wanted the best for them and also because Thanatos and Death in general is hard to work with. I still do not have a name for my story, though I'm working on it. Plot and writing is also hard, so is visualising. (In summary, everything.)

6. Are there any animals in your story?

Plenty! I have not touched the main world yet, but I do know the New World is teeming with life. The Underworld and the Border on the other hand, have its very own bioluminescent inhabitants like the Glow Fishes, the massive Blue Dragon and the Soul Butterflies. Now that I think about it, the Underworld really resembles the spirit world from Avatar.

7. How do your characters get around?

Probably on foot, though I have though about using their powers, like shadow travel from Nico di Angelo. Some of them have physical wings like Volaria and Felix (bird people), while others like Kato and Halcyon in the Prologue have more spiritual ones. Maybe they have animal companions, summons or just teleport through plantlife (Basile).

8. What part of your WIP are you working on right now?

I'm mostly working on the Prologue, with small bits of the First Interlude and the Main Story. I haven't started on the Epilogue yet, only the things I want to see happen like Halcyon and Basile going on a journey together.

9. What aspects of your WIP do you think will draw people in?

Realistically speaking, art tends to get the most attention on Tumblr. In order to do that I'll need to work harder on drawing to show my story through visuals, and not just words. I'll have to doodle my way into people's hearts!
