Hozier really made the song of lust about a love that the narrator would happily burn in hell for. He took a story of lust and adultery and conveyed the love beneath the sin— a love so strong, it was worth eternal damnation. Even if the narrator (Paolo) were given the chance to do life over and possibly get into heaven, he wouldn’t change a thing because he would always choose his lover.

Do you love me
"Do you love me?" I repeat for a final time, running my fingers along each bump and imperfection. I stare at myself in the mirror, watching my lips say the words.
"Of course, I love you, sometimes I forget that I'm supposed to."

writing warm-ups
do you wake up and immediately go to work? no! you have coffee and breakfast first, you wash your face, you get dressed. similarly, you have to warm yourself up before facing a writing challenge. warm-ups are also a great way to fight writers' block. here are some ways to do this:
-keysmash poem; mash that keyboard until you get 6-12 random letters. these are the first letters of each line of a poem you will write. oh, you say you're not a poet? i didn't ask! just mash that keyboard and cough a poem up and never read it again. -letter to the editor; pick a topic that pisses you off. the smaller and more arbitrary, the better. write a paragraph detailing the issue to a neutral third party with as much passive aggression as you can muster. -rewrite; grab a random page of some old project of yours and rewrite it. really think about what you like and dislike about that page, look at it from a new perspective, twist it around until it's different-- doesn't matter if the rewrite is better or worse, because you aren't editing here. you're just getting your gears spinning. -fictionalize it; think of something that happened to you, like a brief interaction with a stranger or a funny mix up at work. turn it into a one-page scene. -dream journal; record an interesting dream. list out details you can remember, or write it like a journal entry, or wax poetic about what it all means. -shitty fanfiction; self explanatory. the more self-indulgent, the better. set a timer for ten minutes, blast off, and then pretend it never happened. -deleted scenes; think about the in between moments of your project. write an email from one of your main characters, or a scene from their childhood, or a text conversation log, really anything that you wouldn't put in your main work. -confessional; pick a fictional character, yours or one from a piece of media you love. write their ten confessions in as much detail as you want.
happy writing! let us know if you try any of these, and reblog if you find this helpful!

what people think writing is: worldbuilding, churning out entire chapters in one sitting, metaphors, character building, finishing novels, flawless plotlines
what writing actually is: random 1 am thoughts, zoning out into fictional worlds, associating songs with characters, writer’s block for six weeks at a time, coming up with plot twists at the most inconvenient times

Alright! So I finished hand binding Crimson Rivers by @mayzarbewithyou :) this was my first time bookbinding so excuse the mistakes I am far from great, but all in good time! This fic basically changed the trajectory of my life so I thought I’d give it the love it deserves! the spine is regulus standing looking up at the tree and he is purposely put on the last book because he finally learned how to climb and grow. I’m so emotional over the end of the fic so this is very emotional to me. I did the typeset myself and there are some cool details I’ll try to put in another post, but basically I added all of Zar’s end notes as footnotes to the specific scenes he talks about! All very fun and the dingbats match the theme for the books and the backs each have quotes the correspond. I split it into 5 just because it didn’t feel right to have the epilogues in the same book as the war. They were two completely different parts of the story so I separated them. Anyways I’ll make another post. This was a labor of love and I hope I did it Justice :)

Radikal ang Magmahal: Understanding the Intricacies of Feministic Love
Tumblr media
Perhaps one thing that is significant about me is that I am a passionate person, especially in matters of feminism and radical love. I have written numerous prose and poetry dabbling feminism, self-love, and women empowerment – as a writer, I have centered the gravity of my words on the essence of being a woman. However, despite the flowery words I lay flat on my empty canvas, there is still an inane struggle in being a woman. I am well aware that these struggles are not solely mine, rather, it is the fruition of the centuries-old struggle of being a woman in this vastly patriarchal world. There is a struggle to belong and to prove that women are equally bright and reasonable – that the stereotype wherein women weep in the midst of a minor inconvenience is false.
Tumblr media
At first, I was confused with the name bell hooks but as I dove deeper, I came to understand the true meaning of bell hooks. She reasoned that she would rather the people remember and place more emphasis on her substantial teachings rather than her name and identity. She was a social activist who championed the feministic theory that argues the interconnectivity of social classifications such as race, gender, class, and sexual identity, among others.
There is strong prejudice in our country, one that is equally parts conservative and equally parts misogynistic, against women who aim to establish themselves in the male-dominated industries. While women have made it clear throughout the years that we are not mere trophies to showcase in order to stroke the male ego, even women themselves hold internal misogyny – this misogyny stems from being limited not only of the ability to do but also the ability to dream. I have met many women who cannot wrap their minds around the thought of having female leaders and politicians, even more – a female president.
There is also the concern of women of color being erased from the feministic narrative. According to hooks, white women are seen as the face of the movement, and often, the struggles of indigenous, black, and women from other minorities are disregarded in favor of white women's struggles. White women have also learned to weaponize and appropriate feminism to serve their own agendas. Thus, even in feminism, there is inane sexism, domination, oppression, colonialism, capitalism, and class struggles.
Tumblr media
She was also able to champion the radicalism of love. That to love is to serve, to love is to be without pain. Love is a liberating and compassionate commitment not a cycle of abuse, lies, and false comfort. While I cannot cite all of her teachings, I would like to highlight the understanding that to love is a choice, to love is freedom. Loving someone isn’t supposed to feel like being thrown into a cage. Becoming a feminist is a choice of love and kindness, of equality and justice.
Thus, I will end this reflection with a final quote from bell hooks. “Feminism is for everybody.”

The Condemnation of Man: Analyzing Sartre’s Being and Nothingness
Tumblr media
Jean-Paul Charles Aymard Sartre (1905-1980) was a prominent character in 20th-century French philosophy and Marxism, as well as one of the fundamental figures in the theory of Existentialism (and phenomenology). He was also a French dramatist, author, screenwriter, political activist, biographer, and literary critic.
In this post, we will be analyzing the philosophy behind Jean-Paul Sartre's Being and Nothingness (1943).
Tumblr media
Jean-Paul Sartre’s Being and Nothingness was created during the war, it would only make sense for it to address war, and Being and Nothingness explicitly does so, addressing the war within ourselves. Sartre, throughout the excerpt, emphasized war, choice, negligence, and responsibility. Through the piece, I have realized that we accept what we are willing to accept and we choose what we are willing to choose. While there are outside factors to consider, it is still our choice and responsibility to intend to address those factors and move past them. We must own our struggles and make them ours for us to overcome. We are our own being and our own nothingness. We are responsible for the war that is brewing inside us and we are responsible for what we go through as they were all made possible through a series of choices that we are accountable for. This is how our past and our future interconnect. By choice, by reason, and by fault. With this, we must learn to carry the weight of our choices by ourselves and not rely on others to carry our faults for us – it would simply be passing our nothingness on to another burdened person.
Tumblr media
Sartre emphasized that we must be without remorse or regrets as we are without excuses. I feel as if this implies that we should not linger on what could have been, what should have been, and our regrets – rather, we should move forward and own up to our choices, and instead celebrate what has yet to come. Perhaps the key to recognizing the existence of nothingness within us can be solved by simply moving forward.
However, another thought to ponder would be the statement, “I did not ask to be born.” This furthers the questions behind existentialism. Are we or are we not responsible for being born? What exactly is the purpose of my being here? While those are questions to ponder, there are also statements to reflect on. That we may not be entirely responsible for our being here, however, we are entirely responsible for what we are doing whilst being here. Our existence would then rely on our purpose and what we can bring to this world. Our purpose would perhaps be to decide as even choosing to be passive and stagnant is a choice that we make for ourselves. Mediocrity would still be a choice. Settling would still be a choice. To quote Sartre, “Thus in a certain sense, I choose being born.”
Tumblr media
Perhaps the reason for our existence is to make it our own as in every one of us, there lies a war – and in every one of us, there lies a warrior. It is up to us to accept the war within us and find meaning to why it exists. It is our responsibility to look for the nothingness within us and find meaning of it.

THE MAN OF BEING AND NOTHINGNESS: Knowing Jean-Paul Sartre Through The Facts
Tumblr media
Born in 1905, Paris, France, to Jean-Baptiste Sartre, an officer of the French Navy, and Anne-Marie Sartre (née Schweitzer), Jean-Paul Sartre would grow up to become one of the key figures of the Existentialist Movement, Phenomenology, 20th-century French philosophy, and Marxism.
Here are some interesting trivias on the life that The Man of Being and Nothingness has lived:
JEAN-PAUL SARTRE WAS PICKED ON BY THE OTHER CHILDREN TOO OFTEN THAN MOST. At the age of two, Jean-Paul had already become fatherless with the passing of Jean-Baptiste Sartre after contracting a severe illness. He was then raised by his mother, Anne-Marie, with the help of Charles Schweitzer, his maternal grandfather. Charles Schweitzer, a teacher, would eventually teach the young Sartre mathematics and classical literature. At age twelve, Sartre’s family relocated to La Rochelle following his mother’s remarriage. Sartre’s fondness of literature was also influenced by his peer’s bullying. Being blind in his right eye and often seeming cross-eyed, young Jean-Paul Sartre was the object of disaffection by his classmates and was often tormented by them. Lacking any positive social interactions with his peers, young Jean-Paul instead turned to books and developed an immense love for books.
Tumblr media
JEAN-PAUL SARTRE WAS A PRANKSTER. Sartre enjoyed his education in Ecole Normale Supérieure, a grande  école university in Paris, France. During his attendance, Sartre’s beloved subject for pranks was his schoolmaster, Gustave Lanson, who he would impersonate and pull tricks on. Gustave Lanson would eventually resign from his post as the school headmaster for his lack of control over his students.
JEAN-PAUL SARTRE WAS A NOTABLE FRENCH NOVELIST, ESSAYIST, BIOGRAPHER, AND DRAMATIST. Mostly known for his contribution to the Philosophical Existentialist Movement with his public lecture ‘Existentialism is a Humanism (1945)’ giving access to his most notable work, Being and Nothingness (1943), Sartre also contributed greatly to the literary world. The Roads to Freedom trilogy (1945–49), The Wall (1939), The Age of Reason (1945), Nausea (1938), and plays like No Exit (1947), Flies (1947), and Dirty Hands (1948), to name a few, are among the literary works he also wrote during his influential lifetime.
Tumblr media
SARTRE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A NOBEL PRIZE RECIPIENT. Jean-Paul Sartre was not only an influential figure in France, in fact, the world was ready to recognize his contributions in the Social Sciences and Liberal Arts. In 1964, Sartre was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "for his work which, rich in ideas and filled with the spirit of freedom and the quest for truth, has exerted a far-reaching influence on our age". However, Sartre rejected the Nobel Prize for two types of reasons – personal and objective. First amongst his reasons was that he never accepted any honors, including the sought after Nobel Prize award. He also believed that accepting the award would impede the impact of his writing. In his views, accepting official distinctions would mean that he would be an institutionalized writer. He has also turned down numerous other memberships and awards such as the Legion of Honour and the Lenin Prize.
SARTRE WAS INSPIRED BY HEIDEGGER’S BEING AND TIME WHILE HE WAS A WWII POW. In 1939 and at the height of the Second World War, Sartre enlisted in the French military to serve as a meteorologist. In Les Carnets de la drôle de guerre: November 1939-Mars 1940, Sartre wrote notebooks of what he referred to as “The Phoney War” in which the French military had declared a war on Germany. During this, the French and German troops were stationed respectively along the Alsatian border, not engaging in combat, merely eyeing each other with hostility and contempt. Sartre, unfortunately, was captured as his company withdrew in anticipation of the German assault. During his time in imprisonment, Sartre studied Heidegger’s Being and Time, and thus was inspired to compose a significant portion of Being and Nothingness (1943) which later would become his major philosophical work.
Tumblr media
Photos above: Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. Photos by Georges Pierre/Sygma/Corbis.
JEAN-PAUL SARTRE WAS A POLITICAL AND SOCIAL ACTIVIST. Undoubtedly an influential figure, not only to France but throughout the whole world, Jean-Paul Sartre’s name was a household name during his time. He had inspired the war-stricken people post WW2 with his musings on Existentialism. After he was released from serving the French military, he co-founded the organization, Socialisme et Liberté, in 1941 with Simone de Beauvoir. Through the group, Jean-Paul Sartre became a key figure to the growing French Resistance movement. Created with the primary goal of apprehending Nazi collaborators and holding them accountable for their humanitarian crimes, the group was composed of other young writers, philosophers, scholars of the Liberal Arts, and students of thought.
Tumblr media
HIS FINAL WORDS WERE SPOKEN TO SIMONE DE BEAUVOIR. Simone de Beauvoir was French existentialist philosopher, feminist activist, writer, and social theorist. Simone de Beauvoir, aside from the many accomplishments tied to her name, was also Jean-Paul Sartre’s partner until his death in 1980. On his deathbed, weakened and health deteriorating drastically with several illnesses such as arteritis, uremia, diabetes, and almost complete blindness, de Beauvoir remained as his confidante and had stayed by his side. To quote de Beauvoir, "At one point I asked to be left alone with Sartre, and I made as if to lie down beside him under the sheet. A nurse stopped me. 'No. Take care . . . the gangrene.' It was then that I understood the real nature of the bedsores. I lay on top of the sheet and I slept a little." During his final moments, the French philosopher had turned to gaze at de Beauvoir for the last time with the words, “I love you very much, my dear Beaver,” before passing away.
Tumblr media
HE WAS A WELL-LOVED FIGURE, EVEN AFTER DEATH. Sartre was a scholar through and through, and along that was an activist, literary critic, novelist, playwright, and many more. He was often seen in Café de Flore with other great minds such as Simone de Beauvoir and lived a life primarily in Paris, France where he witnessed several historical and cultural events. On April 15, 1980, Jean-Paul Sartre passed away from pulmonary edema and on April 19, 1980, the world witnessed as history took place. On the Saturday following his death, 50,000 Parisians gathered to attend his funeral procession.
