Oh nothing, @justalilobsessd, just me watching 19 seconds on a loop at 4am. 😂 I even took something before bed, but my insomnia still knows no end. May as well obsess over Brio moments, right?
So here’s the scene with “the look.” (And excuse my shadow in the background. I had a backlight on and I’m not savvy enough to use technology to make clean video.)
To me, this was a look at someone who’s intruding on a private moment. And I mean, that’s what Mick’s doing. What he’s probably been paid to do. He’s standing guard over Rio who may not feel capable of containing his own emotions with this woman in this moment – whatever this means to him and however he’s worried those emotions will come out. This look happens right after his “you, me, we…” line.
Is it just business, Rio? Do you believe that? You don’t look like you believe that. Couldn’t even look at her when he said it. He lifted his eyes after to make sure it landed, but he looks pained for having said it at all.
And Beth doesn’t believe it, either. The flashbacks she’s having here. Look at the shock and hurt.
The music here. The atmosphere. This isn’t a standoff. This is an intimate, vulnerable, emotional conversation fraught with the hurt they each feel. They aren’t arguing about printing or the risks behind printing. They’re airing the pain they’ve caused each other. So I think this look to Mick coming right as Rio says something so emotional is Beth’s acknowledgment that this moment isn’t business at all.
Look at her. She watches Rio as he slumps back down, sees the feelings on him, then looks up at Mick. It’s almost protective. Like she’s protecting the privacy of what’s shared between just her and Rio. She’s acknowledging that she can’t push him much further because Mick is watching and they’ve already said too much. Knows Rio won’t give her more. But that’s what she needed him here for – to have this emotional discussion and unload the pain of Lucy’s death onto him. Share it with him. And she got what she needed. You can see her look over Rio one more time, understand that he’s hurting too. And now, having affirmed to herself that she and Rio are still in this emotional limbo together and he hasn’t forgotten their history, she sighs a relieved sigh and agrees to print.
Do you think she was worried that killing Lucy would have changed Rio’s feelings for her? Pushed him further away? Made him want to be done with her? It almost seems like she was. Like she needed to see this emotional outburst from him to confirm she still has him. That the game goes on.
It’s more like I ask all the questions so she can feed my Brio hungry soul!
I go like, “I NEED TO KNOW!” then, “HELP ME!”, and then @michelleelizabethtanner analyzes everything for me with immense details! 😂
Why did Rio take all his money back and smash the corvette at the dealership in 2.04? Just a regular Friday night, contemplating important Brio topics with the incredible @justalilobsessd and this was the topic of the day.
There are so many theories. Why give Beth the money and then take it back? What did Rio really want? Was he wanting to keep her close because they had sex and he changed his mind about letting her go? Was he jealous? Was he just setting her up to take the fall for him?
And obviously… it’s complicated.
My headcanon is that he really was going to let her go. I believe that Rio is a man who’s seen a lot of stuck women. Women who are trapped in unhappy, abusive marriages with no hope of escape because their husbands hold all the cards. Smart, capable women trapped by circumstance. We also know that Rio loves to be the savior. From Grandma’s new stove, to The Dubby, to how he ensures his baby mama is properly taken care of. Rio takes genuine pride in ensuring “his” women are safe with him.
Giving Beth the money, or “the keys to the kingdom” wasn’t a gift of keys to HIS kingdom. It was keys to HERS. It was a way out. Leave cheater Dean, use your brain, use everything you’ve learned to build a life for yourself. Here is startup capital. I imagine this is what Rio was intending. He was handing her everything she’s ever wanted.
And what did she do with his gift? She bailed out her husband with it. Spit in Rio’s face. Invested in Dean yet again. She didn’t see the gift for what it was. And then she brought her husband into Rio’s space and she affirmed to Rio that she was not happy and she wanted more and she took it from Rio with her eyes closed. And she loved it. Then went home with Dean to keep enabling him. What a slap in the face to someone who did her an enormous favor.
So Rio came into her space. Or… into her husband’s space. And he took his gift back and he showed her that if she wanted to be mediocre, he'd treat her like she’s mediocre. He took half her business and scared her husband in the process, affirming his power to her.
The money was just another Rio grand gesture. And taking back was a punishment.
Saw your post way late but if you’re still looking for a distraction…. Fic recs (or prompt idea if there aren’t any🤞🏻): first date? AUs with diff professions (like fireman!rio, teacher!beth)? Or literally anything Halloween related? ❤️ You’re the best!!!
Heya anon! Thank you so much, you're very sweet! 💕
I actually have a few different rec lists similar to these that you can find in my rec list masterpost! I'll also link some specific lists -
Brio prompt: you do angst really well. Which is why I was wondering if you can write about Beth talking to rio about her past( her mom/depression episode) and Rios talks about his past too. Maybe they hiding out somewhere after a deal gone wrong?
so sorry this took so long ! and so sorry that it’s SUCH a monster ( almost 13k words YIKES ) but apparently i have emotions about post s2 brio. it kind of devolved a bit from the original prompt but i hope you’ll forgive me
he flinches at her touch, and she doesn’t have time to unpack it because he’s saying her name in that dangerous tone.
“elizabeth —” it’s a familiar warning by now, but she’s not having it. "no, let go, this is ridiculous. you can’t see what you’re doing, i can. let me help you.“ he glares at her over his shoulder for a long time, but she stands her ground, and eventually he releases his grip on the shirt, rolling his other shoulder before letting his arm fall to his side. still, even giving in, he can’t let her have the last word, so — "yeah, i’m not real big on your particular brand of help.” and it’s bitter, she thinks maybe the most honestly bitter thing he’s said to her since… well, since.
Notes: this story takes place in the same timeline as sic transit gloria but well after, and it’s not necessary to read before this one, just know it’s post S2 and beth has opened a bakery ( that’s legit but also a front ). i do recommend reading sinking like a stone in the sea first, though, because that’s the first time rio hears about her mom and her depression.
