The headvoices (plus Mr. Samsa!!!)
Doughboys
So, in the first issue there's only one doughboy and it's D-boy. But he looks a bit different from how he looks for the rest of the series. He has long, black sleeves that would be given to Mr. Eff instead in the next issue. I'm not sure if this means that issue 1 takes place before Eff existed (in the bios it says that D-boy is two years older) or what.
For most of the series, D-boy has a white hat with columns of skulls and a black brim. It also has a little creepy face on it. I think this face was a way Jhonen used to sign his initials. He has 'FUCK' on his front, a black scarf, and three thin stripes on his arms with black gloves. He has spiral eyes with tears coming down, his nose has a dot and four squiggles, and his mouth is white with a black tongue.
Though the back cover of issue 2 shows a pile of skulls instead of individual towers.
Eff has a black hat with little ghosts and the brim has vertical stripes. His scarf is white and his front has a stripe and a box that says 'Z?'. He also took the sleeves D-boy had at first. His eyes are blank with a thick outline, arrows pointing away from the face and they're surrounded by squiggles or spikes, like a cartoon sun. He seems to have a pig nose and his mouth has a bunch of lines and may have arrows at the ends. His mouth is black with a white tongue. They both have black feet or shoes or whatever.
They also both have flat backs that are painted. D-boy has a spiral behind his head and Eff has... an arrow?? That would make sense.
When we do see them in color we see that Mr. Eff has purple on his hat and red eyes and scarf. D-boy seems to just be black and white. It seems the same at the end of I Feel Sick except the skulls on D-boy hat are black now. In the recent print Jhonen has changed quite a few things. The biggest thing is that D-boy now has glowing blue eyes to match Eff's red ones. Their hats are also very different. Now D-boy's has one big white skull as the top and Eff has a black skull with the teeth coming all the way down. D-boy has a little frowny face on the brim and Eff has a little smiley face. He also doesn't have the stripes anymore. Eff's front and gloves seem to be a dark green now (or it could just be the lighting or something). D-boy now has just two thicker stripes on his arms and has two squiggles on his nose and now it kind of looks like a mustache.
Reverend MEAT and Mr. Samsa
It looks like Meat and Mr. Samsa were planned to also be doughboys originally. One was named Senor Bondage and it says "the urge to give in to the mentality of being a physical being. Driven by organic whim." This sounds exactly like Meat. The other doughboy, Nil, which means 'nothing', says "The Little Creatures That Live Inside Us--Fashioned by dough or clay, from the things we hope no one can ever see." Not completely sure what that means, but Mr. Samsa IS a little creature.
Anyway, I think Jhonen changed it because he realized it would be really redundant if Johnny came back and once again had two doughboys talking to him. It would feel like nothing had changed. It was an extra good decision to have Mr. Samsa not even be a headvoice, but something Johnny could project his desire on to. Instead of being dragged back and forth by two opposing voices, it's Johnny himself and his desire to be emotionless like Mr. Samsa (which isn't true. bugs have lots of little bug emotions) vs Meat and his desire for Johnny to give in to all of his emotions. This is also shown in the fact that he doesn't trust Meat at all when he thought of the doughboys as his friends.
Reverend MEAT doesn't get a chance to change much. He's able to move around to some extent right away, making his burger disappear and making his eyes blank, like Eff. They also have stitch marks going up from them. His shirt can have different words on it, like Johnny's shirts, and he has sharp teeth and overalls. In I Feel Sick we see that he has red eyes, but then they get changed to a glowing pink. The pattern on his overall might be gone now and they might be red, but it's hard to tell.
Mr. Samsa is an immortal roach (or a series of roaches) and he stays that way. He hasn't shown up in group shots of the headvoices because he doesn't talk and is just a little bug who likes candycorn.
Nailbunny
Nailbunny hasn't changed at all aside from the one big change that happened in the comics. He was a dead bunny with a huge nail in him, but Eff rips his head off and now he's just a floating bunny head. He's blue and can fit on an ice cream cone.
Fetus in a Jar
It had one line in issue one where it distracted Johnny from killing himself by telling him that a funny commercial was on. Usually I would assume it's just some Early Installment Weirdness, but it showed up in a recent print with the other headvoices, so I guess it's canon. Now's it's in some other fluid-filled container and it looks like it was some oddity Johnny bought at a store or something rather than he himself finding a fetus somehow and just putting it in a jar.

Movies mentioned in JTHM
That other post I wrote has got me thinking about JTHM and movies and I started thinking about all the ones that actually get called out by name in it. I was hoping I would have actually seen more of them so I could talk about what parallels (if any) are actually being drawn here but I’ve only seen about three of these lol. But if anyone’s interested here’s just a list of all the movie references I caught in JTHM:
Tumblr media
Aliens (1986) or possibly Alien (1979) (looks more like the logo for Aliens tho) - poster on Johnny’s wall
Tumblr media
Edward Scissorhands (1990) - another poster on Johnny’s wall in the same panel
Tumblr media
Brazil (1985) is the movie Johnny and Devi saw on their date
Tumblr media
Nny “met” Tess and Dillon at a showing of Kafka (1991)
Tumblr media
And in the very next panel Dillon mentions The Crow (1994)
Tumblr media
Which also gets parodied in this poster on Anne Gwish’s wall
Tumblr media
As well as Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)
Tumblr media
And of course, Nny quotes The Fly (1986) (which is actually a remake of a movie from 1958, but I’m pretty sure the line he quotes is only in the 1986 one).
Feel free to add on if I missed anything!!

I expected to find out that Johnny doesn’t use as many stabbing weapons as expected, but no, he does.
I was surprised to find out that most of the knives aren’t really cool with interesting blades but just regular kitchen knives.
In addition to knives, he also has:
an axe
a couple of cleavers
a sledgehammer
something that shoots out circular saws??
possibly a machete
a scythe
hooks on ropes
taser
mallet
different polearms
swords (in the umbrella stands)
a hook on a stick
a bow and arrow
hammer (he uses both sides!)
bombs that he possibly makes
dynamite
back saw
He also uses:
pipe
mannequin arm
plastic spork
The thing that was surprising is that most of his knives seem to just be kitchen knives with regular black handles. There are also some knives that have a bunch of points or have hooks on the end.
Some of the earlier ones have a flat piece at the top of the hilt.
Some knives seem to be kept in a glass case. Some are up on a tool board thing. There are 4 that are numbered in the room with Tess and Dillon. Some are thrown into a box, but most of them seem to be put up on the walls.
Now, Jhonen tends to give him knives that have the smilie faces on the top of the hilt, horizontal lines in the middle, and a spike at the end.

do you have any tips for drawing?
reference!! omg, that’s all i do is stare the source material in hopes of getting it kinda-close to the original. it never works 100%, my style always creeps in some way, but as long as i can get it to the point im happy with it that works for me
and when i say reference, my biggest tip i can say for that is learning the distance and proportions for each character (jthm is a bad example of this since i take a lot of liberty with the style and jhonen’s half-consistent on a good day BUT)
Tumblr media
i try and note the different head shapes (devi’s more consistent than nny for this one) and how to space out their faces. johnny has BIG eyes, and they take up a large portion of his big ass head, but the center of his eyes are almost always below the top of his ear, while devi’s center of her eyes falls above her ear, even in the old comics
Tumblr media
this helps with trying to make unique faces and face shapes, even outside of jhonen’s style! :]c
i posted this on my main, [and this example is much more SHAPELY than jthm chars] but this is how i set up a basic skeleton for figures
Tumblr media
i hope that helps! :D

So, what can we learn?:
Johnny wears a lot of stripes. Some are thick stripes and sometimes it’s a bunch of thin stripes.
His shirts tend to have horizontal stripes, but sometimes they’ll be vertical. The vertical ones are never thick stripes. One shirt has thin vertical stripes AND thick horizontal stripes on top of it. He has a couple of shirts that have a pattern where some or most of it has thin stripes.
He has one shirt that has thick stripes on the back and is solid with a picture on the front (the wacky one). And one shirt that has thick horizontal stripes with solid colored sides (when he kills the girl with the scythe, it might just be shading). There’s also one that has thin horizontal stripes and a few thin vertical stripes (Things That Make Noise). The shirts with thin vertical stripes are the rarest and never have a picture on them.
His sleeves tend to have a different pattern from the rest of the shirt (most likely so we can see his arm when it’s against his body).
Johnny’s clothes aren’t as tattered as I expected. The ends of his sleeves are more likely to be shredded at the ends, but the bottoms of his shirts are only ripped up in the earlier stuff. Sometimes his pants are ripped up, but it’s hard to tell a lot of the time.
His pants are almost always a solid color or a bunch of vertical stripes, with two exceptions where his pants had thick, horizontal stripes.
Most of his shirts have tails. Usually two in the back, but sometimes it’s one rectangular one. Those ones usually also have one in the front too. Sometimes it’s more of a triangular bit. The tails on his shirt in Descent (issue 4) are thicker and don’t come to a point like they usually do.
Most of his shirts have sleeves that end just above the elbow. Some end halfway down his upper arm and some end a little after his elbow. His pants usually end just above the knee or they’re longer and go down into his boots.
While early on those are all he wears, later he starts wearing shirts and pants under those. Those shirts are always full length and are either a solid color or have horizontal stripes of some sort. The pants are similar except they always have thin stripes when not a solid color and they had vertical stripes once.
Boots!! In the oldest pictures of Johnny they’re a lot shorter, with only two buckles or whatever on them. In earlier stuff the boots are a lot flatter and softer looking. It doesn’t even look like they have steel toes. Around issue 3 they start to look firmer and have two tips at the end. Jhonen goes back and forth a bit on whether the boots have one or two tips on the front, but by issue 7 they definitely have a heel now. He also has the other, shorter boots he’s wearing when Jimmy comes over. They have a bunch of little bits on the front and the steel toe is smaller with a bigger heel. And the other shoes he’s wearing in the more recent pic Jhonen drew of him.
Gloves! He has one pair that’s short and covers the whole hand. He has a pair of long gloves (we don’t see the end of them) that are fingerless. He has long gloves that appear to be made of a thicker material and go to his elbows. Then he has thin, long gloves that aren’t fingerless. He only wears the fingerless ones once. There are also the fishnet gloves he has on the back of issue 5. There’s also the new one which has black gloves with Sickness’s screws on them. I don’t know if ether of these are really canon though.
He has at least one hoodie. (2:15 am) It has a rectangular bit on the front that could be a black zipper or just a block of color.
He has at least 2 crop tops. (Die-ary of issue 3 and when he gives the homeless guy legs) One has the bottom all ripped up.
The coat in Issue 4 and the coat in issue 7 have different lengths, so they might be different coats. He also has the coat in the J’s Not J print.
He wears a belt with a circular buckle at least once.
Color! Obviously, there isn’t much to go on, but Johnny clearly doesn’t just wear black and white. He wears dark purple and blue and has pants that are gray or like a greenish gray. He also has whatever he’s wearing in the headshot, which is a bright blue. So he doesn’t just stick to dark, neutral colors.
He also has a scarf.
I have no idea what the fuck he’s wearing on the cover of issue 3. Someone please explain that!!
Other neat things:
When he gets the coat in hell he also gets a new shirt and pants.
Jhonen’s actually pretty consistent with what Johnny’s wearing before and after his death. The picture disappears sometimes (although that happens all the time) and sometimes it seems like there’s a triangular bit on the front, but that might just be shading.
The outfit he’s wearing when Jimmy comes over is pretty much the brightest. It’s all white with just a few, thin vertical lines. He also has a white shirt when talking to MEAT, but it’s also with a black coat. I’m assuming this is to help make him more different from Jimmy.
If anyone wants to link to real life versions of what Johnny wears I’m sure people would appreciate it. Especially whatever he’s wearing on issue 3.
If you just want all the different pictures on his shirts, someone put this together a long long time ago: https://www.deviantart.com/loomboy/art/Johnny-s-Magic-shirt-56849536

These are all the pictures of Johnny’s house from the outside. So, what can we tell:
The outside is actually much more consistent than the inside, which isn’t saying much.
The house is made of two rectangles.
The two front windows on the main part are always boarded up. There started being a window on the right side after issue 3 but before issue 5. The smaller rectangle has a large window on the front with blinds and a similar window on the right side with no blinds.
There’s a backyard surrounded by a wooden fence It wasn’t there in issue 1). We don’t see the backyard, but according to his tweets there’s a small pool for puppies.
The roof is flat and made of wood. Johnny paints targets or messages to aliens up there. There used to be a tube coming out of it (chimney?), but now it’s some rectangular things (could also be a chimney?).
There used to be two steps to his front door, but by the time Jimmy shows up there’s one.
He moves the yard sign around.
He has one welcome mat that says “What?” and one that says “Welcome”. Maybe the first one got lost when the Moose happened.

This blog is going to have references for random Johnny things. Probably not Johnny himself because that would be most of the comic, but stuff like what his front door looks like or rooms in his basement or paintings he has. That way, it’s all in one place for artists/writers.
You guys can send in requests for what stuff you’d like references for.
