You know, even if this isnt true, it does say something about about how people see women who are stick thin right? I mean most men,myself included, like women that have those amazing curves and dont mind being a foodie either.

You have made an excellent point and honestly it hits the problem on the nose however I think this is supposed to be a part of the book. See she is still extremely young and while she is definitely able to command armies and wage wars, she can still be pretty naive when it comes to things like this. Not to mention this is the only way she has been able to deal with her problems big and small; she couldn't offer any other advice because she doesnt know what other advice to give, I think.

Something that’s always bothered me (and correct me if I’m wrong, I don’t have the book in front of me) and one of the reasons I feel like Murtagh and Nasuada wouldn’t work out unless they did some serious work first, is how when Nasuada’s being held captive by Galbatorix and she’s talking to Murtagh and says something along the lines of “stop feeling sorry for yourself.”

As someone with mental illness and trauma, I’ve had a variation of that said to me so many times and it’s so dismissive and insensitive to what someone has been though. It kind of feels like, even when he tells her, she’s not very sympathetic. She just kind of seems like she goes “well, time to pick yourself up by your bootstraps and move forward.” Like the type of stuff he’s been through just doesn’t GO AWAY. It’s not FEELING SORRY FOR YOURSELF, it’s just FEELING. And it kind of makes me angry, especially since she’s never had a parent—a person who’s supposed to be supportive and loving—torment/abandon her the way Murtagh’s parents did to him. She’s never been hated just by association even when she herself hadn’t done anything wrong, she would have no idea what it would’ve felt like for Murtagh to show up at the Varden and suddenly be hated just because of who his father was, just to be imprisoned and anxious and terrified of what would happen to you cuz of who your father was even when you hadn’t done anything wrong. Like, Galbatorix literally POSSESSED Murtagh against his will. That has to feel so violating. And he forced Thorn to grow faster than he was supposed to, he hurt Thorn in order to get to Murtagh, both of which Murtagh could feel through their mental link, just to get Murtagh to swear fealty in the ancient language so that Murtagh could never betray him without changing his true name. I’m not saying Murtagh is a horrible character (obviously, he’s my fave, this blog is literally about him), but I’m not gonna sit here and say he’s never done anything horrible either. Yes, he did bad things cuz his circumstances were shit, and did he have any other choice in a lot of those instances? Probably not, but they still happened. So I understand where Nasuada is coming from there and I understand her intent was to snap him out of it in an attempt to save them both. But her labeling it as “feeling sorry for yourself” is the absolute fucking WORST way to do it. Whether it worked or not, it’s so dismissive of everything he’s been through. I love Nasuada and I wish she and Murtagh could work out, I really do, and I have multiple other obvious reasons I don’t think they would (such as Murtagh’s immortality, him being a Rider, most of Nasuada’s subjects still hating him, etc.), but sometimes I think she can be a bit too quick to label things because she doesn’t understand them and she can be really harsh. Even if she had said something more like “I understand why that’s upsetting and it sucks and I’m sorry you went through that, but it’s time for action right now,” that would’ve been better than “stop feeling sorry for yourself.” Like, trauma leaves scars and they take time to heal. Depression, anxiety and trauma aren’t just “feeling sorry for yourself,” you just feel like shit in general after that kind of shit happens to you. It still will hit you at random times and make you upset. What would she do if they were together and he got triggered by something and got upset? Would she go “stop feeling sorry for yourself.”

I might be being too harsh on her, but just the way she said what she did to Murtagh in Inheritance honestly triggered the shit out of me and as someone with anxiety, depression, PMDD and trauma, that would be a huge red flag if someone I liked said “stop feeling sorry for yourself.” I love my girl, but she needs to check herself (and yes, I’m aware she was tired and desperate and imprisoned, which could’ve just caused a poor word choice, but it was still triggering for me). Again, I love Nasuada, just my 2 cents.
