Sight for sore eye(lid)s -- a (full) circle motif seems appropriate in those moments when you recall the first time experiencing seminal works of art. I was reminded of this again recently through the opportunity to host the effervescent @pipilotti_rist_studio in the *refreshed* #ArtistsBookLibrary for the #BehindYourEyelid exhibition now on view at @taikwuncontemporary (go team!) and in sites throughout @taikwun.hk #HongKong (at 大館 Tai Kwun) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cg1de8nFofu/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I want my B(OOK)TV -- so much to unpack (literally) from Good Afternoon Hong Kong! by @chihoichihoi
#REPOST @taikwuncontemporary #LoveBooksByArtists
Chihoi, Good Afternoon Hong Kong!
Exploring Good Afternoon Hong Kong! (nos:books, 2017) evokes the experience of "unboxings" by netizens introducing the latest mobile phone or tech gadgets online. For Hong Kong artist Chihoi, this starts with a cardboard container barely bigger than a matchbox. Replete with vivid text and illustrations, its exterior and inside flaps effectively advertise the treasure trove within, including a "full colour slide viewer" in the form of a miniature plastic toy television. Sourced from a traditional factory in Germany, its retro style recalls Hong Kong's heyday as an electronics hub beginning in the late-1970s, and where "8 splendid views of Hong Kong unseen on TV" can be seen and "read".
The box also contains a zine in the form of an instructional guide. Entitled "Notes on the Eight Scenes" Hong Kong's airport, Mandarin Oriental hotel, Pak Sin Leng Mountain, former Star Ferry Clock Tower and other sites, serve as backdrops to relay stories of personal and communal displacement amid the challenges of changing times.
In the end, Good Afternoon, Hong Kong! is a time capsule depicting virtual travel through an analog lens. In so doing, it simultaneously "unpacks" a vision of what an artist book can be.
#LoveBooksByArtists(心水藝術家書籍),我們會從藝術家書籍圖書館精心挑選其中藏品,公諸同好。
#LoveBooksByArtists features selections from the Artists’ Book Library—a growing collection of Asia-centred, artist-driven publications—and through its programme of talks, live events, displays, editions, workshops, and special projects highlighting books as a medium of artistic expression.

Chairocracy -- and I'm the chairator (of this post) #BringItOn #REPOST @taikwuncontemporary #LoveBooksByArtists How are the VIPs of art institutions defined? The Korean artist Haegue Yang's playful and idiosyncratic answer comes by way of VIP’s Union 2001–2018, a publication produced on the occasion of her 2018 exhibition at Austria’s Kunsthaus Graz. Yang, who frequently incorporates everyday objects in her practice, presents chairs and other furniture, borrowed from over 100 people, in two phases: initially, as functional seating throughout the art space and then within a non-interactive setting. Here “VIPs” also serve dual roles: as exhibition lenders, and through their possessions, some of which are shown “tipped over, scattered”, the installation emerges as a collective portrait of art institutions and their surrounding cultural ecology. The publication also addresses the operation of the cultural complex. Besides loan forms and a genealogy tracking past installations, reflective surface treatments implicate readers within its pages that deconstruct the documentary function of exhibition catalogues in a conceptually witty way. #LoveBooksByArtists features selections from the Artists’ Book Library—a growing collection of Asia-centred, artist-driven publications—and through its programme of talks, live events, displays, editions, workshops, and special projects highlighting books as a medium of artistic expression.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 梁慧圭:《貴賓聯盟 2001-2018》,鳴謝柏林出版社「BOM DIA BOA TARDE BOA NOITE」 Haegue Yang, VIP’s Union 2001-2018 (2018). HELLO!
#REPOST @designtrust In honour of #InternationalWomensDay 2022, we are delighted to highlight #DesignTrustFeatureGrant recipient Ingrid Pui Yee Chu and her ongoing project “Breaching Sanctum”, that delves into the work of a generation of Chinese female creators, designers, and architects born in the 1980s – on the cusp of the 1990s – a decade that continues to impact international Chinese contemporary culture.
Through a curatorial approach to stimulate an active dialogue between invited participants and audiences, “Breaching Sanctum” opens up, unfolds, and attempts to break down barriers that have often been in the path of female practitioners’ research and achievements. The female perspective also becomes a critical lens to examine current developments, innovations, and pressures connected to urbanism, sustainability, the built environment, and technology as well as their own subjectivity and millennial perspectives in the rapidly changing world of the 21st century. Scheduled to open this year, “Breaching Sanctum” will present an exhibition focusing on newly commissioned creative and design works, along with a series of public programmes, a reading area, and a publication. More recently, Ingrid Pui Yee Chu has also contributed to Leelee Chan’s Art Journey, Tokens From Time featuring one of the invited female sculptor Leelee Chan’s latest works.
International Women’s Day 2022 imagines a gender equal world, a world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination; a world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive; a world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women's equality. Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.
Leelee Chan’s Art Journey, Tokens From Time。
(at Hong Kong)

Mirror power -- Thank you #DanGraham (1942-2022) for your artists' books, films and videos, magazine pages, pavilions, performances, writing and more. Your work has left so much for us 'contextualisers' to do, in continuing to share the power of your “two-way” plus practice, and in contemplating how transparency, reflection, accessibility and all the lessons they beget, can inform our own.

Namesake (in stone) -- people always find it difficult to read, write, and pronounce the second half of my Chinese name: 瑿. I have trouble with the character too, mostly because Chinese writing means that strokes go from left to right, and from up to down.
So, I asked my father about this -- already aware about how German lessons resulted in my first (non-Chinese) name -- to which he replied: “'Yee' means 'black jade'.”
Needless to say, it was a welcome surprise to come across Hong Kong's famed “Giant Jade Stone” recently. Located in the Yau Sim Mong district of Kowloon, these historic stones are as ubiquitous as they are lauded for being auspicious charms and symbols of “nobility and moral integrity”. Translation? Even if this stone is of the more well-known green variety, I'll still be going back to visit (often) to see how much of this rubs off 🪨📿. (at 香港大玉石 Hongkong Giant Jade Stone)

Writing Journey (fulfilled) -- thank you Leelee Chan @doubleleechan for inviting me to contribute to your newly released BMW Art Journey book, 'Tokens from Time' (Hatje Cantz, 2022).
What a joy it was to share in your journey, and now in seeing what has come from our discussions about the possibilities for art in print, as well as your research and pandemic-era experiences delving into our material world. Now, in its final "hybrid" form existing somewhere between a catalogue, a travelogue, and an artists' book, you ask important questions about what it means to be an artist working today, as well as through the lives of all those you encountered, in opening up possibilities for the future.
Along with the artist, the book serves as a testament to the efforts of all those involved: thank you to series editor Andras Szanto for originating and propelling this edition and growing book series forward, along with Myles McDonnell for his insightful editing, the innovative #DoubleStandards design team, Art Basel and fellow contributors.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Art in print plays an integral role in Chinese-Austrian artist Jun Yang’s practice. For BOOKED:, he creates the installation, Syndromes and Fictions including tiled “wallpaper”, pedestals and bench seating, alongside moving image works and his artist books, to explore how people build their own “sense of self” and how this evolves over time through changing surroundings. Jun Yang and curator Ingrid Pui Yee Chu will discuss his special project, as well as the role of publishing in his multidisciplinary practice. His approach to art in print distinguishes itself in its more playful aspects, while cultivating the experience of books as a form of travel.
