Think about Lonnie raising Will to shoot and fight and kill but Will growing up to survive by running and hiding and the importance of the consistent message "flight is not weaker than fight. If it keeps you alive, it keeps you alive" and the irony in Lonnie saying "that boy never was good at taking care of himself" contrasting Jonathan saying "he's really good at hiding" and Will being the only person to last more than a few hours in the upside down.
He's just fine at taking care of himself. He's just fine at protecting himself from things like Lonnie.

Bill Cipher being probably one of my favorite characters of all time, I'm cautiously exited about The Book of Bill.
One of my worries - less about the book itself and more about fan reception - is that the book will hint towards a more sympathetic or tragic backstory for Bill and people will write it off as him being given unnecessary depth. In fact there has been a lot of evidence for Bill having a tragic background and more depth than seems for years and I wanted to make a sort of compilation post for these pieces because I genuinely think they add a lot to the themes of the show and I hope I can encourage people to examine his character beyond the surface and embrace any further depth TBoB might give him.
I'm also planning to one day make a full, comprehensible essay about his character as a whole, but that's more likely after the book is released.
The Axolotl Poem
In the show's finale, before Bill dies, he says backwards "A.X.O.L.O.T.L. MY TIME HAS COME TO BURN, I INVOKE THE ANCIENT POWER THAT I MAY RETURN".
youtube
Months later, we recieved context for this in form of the Axolotl poem which is in a hidden page in the book "Dipper and Mabel and the Curse of the Time Pirates' Treasure" in which the mystery twins encounter a giant space axolotl that answers Dipper's question of what he knows about Bill with said poem:
Tumblr media
This is technically not part of the axolotl stuff but I think seeing what the poem says about Bill, it's also worth to add this bit from the 2015 Bill Cipher Reddit AMA:
Tumblr media
Flatland
Also in the AMA, when asked about his origins, he mentions the author of the book Flatland.
Tumblr media
Flatland is about a dystopian, two dimensional world that already has A Lot of implications about Bill's past by itself. Journal 3 even references the book and the dimension with Exwhylia which is sort of a simplified Flatland.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Family
One of the first bits of information we get about Bill's family is just him implying in the AMA that he killed them but not only does Journal 3 confirm that, but Hirsch has described Bill's relationship with his family as worse than Stan's.
Tumblr media
Motivations
I honestly think Bill's monolouge in the penthouse kinda speaks for itself concerning his background, motivations, and goals, but I think not only does it tend to get overlooked or brushed over, but all the other stuff just adds a lot more weight to it overall.
youtube
What I also feel is significant to Bill's motivations is a lot of what he writes in Journal 3 during the post-betrayal era and how he seems to kinda actually view himself as being in the right despite his cartoonish cruelty:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I could also get into how Bill strongly parallels both Mabel and Ford and how he seems to hold some genuine affection for both of them but I already wrote two lenghty posts about that and don't want this post to become even more messy. please talk to me about bill cipher

Bill Cipher lore experts when The Book of Bill off-handedly mentions that he used to have uneven sides

Do you think we’ll get Axolotl crumbs or like a whole chapter dedicated to him and his relationship with Bill? Or do you think we’re getting nothing about him at all?
I think there’s a very slim chance we get nothing, so I’d love to hear your thoughts on it!
Ooooh, that's a good one!
Since the book is from Bill's POV, I'm expecting the narration to be highly unreliable, with hints of vuneraBILLity subtle and sparse, with the odd overt moment here and there- think something like the "lie until you aren't lying anymore" AMA answer.
Coupled with the fact that the book is explicitly for adults- it's a reasonable expectation to expect readers to know how to spot an unreliable narrator at this point.
So factoring this in, I don't think we'll get a whole chapter on him, BUT I'm willing to bet that he'll at LEAST be mentioned here and there. If we're lucky, Bill'll rant about him derisively and we can nitpick everything he says to find the nuggets of truth hidden inside!!

Man.
You know what I think I love the most about Bill Cipher? It’s the ability for this one character to be the worst possible being known to man yet one thing can make us question everything we know about his character.
I think about the Axolotl poem A LOT and I think it speaks to how much one little thing can change everything. The Reddit AMA as well. There’s so many little things outside of the show that really made me (and I’m sure many others as well) feel not quite finished with Gravity Falls.
I think back to that interview Hirsch did with The Mary Sue way back when. The one where he talked about leaving Bill’s return up in the air in case he ever wanted to go back to it. I think this book is him coming back to it.
I don’t really know my point in this short ramble, I think I’m just really excited to see his point of view. His thoughts on the Axolotl. His silly little projection onto Mabel. Even if he’s lying, I want to know how this goofy fictional villain thinks. One minute he’s rearranging faces, the next? Silly Straws!
To me I guess I don’t really care about what his backstory ends up being. I don’t really care if he actually liked so and so character or not.
I just wanna know if he’ll slip up and tell the truth.

I’ve been re-reading Good Omens the book as my way of healing from s2, and I know book omens and show omens are different, but I would very much like to point out this little passage:
Tumblr media
(“Are you saying,” said Crowley, “that He planned it this way all along? From the very beginning?”
Aziraphale conscientiously wiped the top of the bottle and passed it back.
“Could have,” he said. “Could have. One could always ask Him, I suppose.”
“From what I remember,” replied Crowley, thoughtfully, “—and we were never actually on what you might call speaking terms—He wasn’t exactly one for a straight answer. In fact, in fact, He’d never answer at all. He’d just smile, as if He knew something that you didn’t.”)
Now, I know this bit was sort of in s1, but not the bit about God never truly speaking with Crowley. I’m not the best at theories and what not when it comes to Good Omens, so take of this what you will. Maybe it should be overlooked as it’s the book and not the show, but it’s something I’ll hold onto as we go into s3.
God just smiling, never answering.
It makes the Job minisode a bit sadder when thinking about Crowley watching God answer Job. Even if it was just nonsense. More than a smile would have been nice.

thank god I was at work when the spoilers dropped. Knowing a bit about ep 1-2? That’s innocent. Harmless. There is nothing wrong with wanting to know a little bit of spoilers for episodes that have been PUBLICLY shown.
BUT 3-5???? That’s something completely different. That’s stuff that’s there to make things better. Like, that’s just the whole show at that point.
And I just feel bad for Neil and the team. Especially with the strike(s) right now.

Thinking about how Will acts pretty normal and not insane around Mike because he’s had years to practice hiding his feelings, but Mike is insane and doesn’t know how to act because he’s just now realizing his feelings 🥲

Will has “You’re Only Old Once!” By Dr. Seuss in his room during season 3 (and maybe 2. Idk.) and if that isn’t such an insane detail idk what is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
People are gonna sit there and tell me that the Duffers don’t care about detail because they forgot Will’s birthday, while also having a book with this plot in his room:
Tumblr media
Will literally goes to hospitals, gets tested on, and is fed up with being tested on by the end of it-
THE DETAIL??? THIS SHOW IS INSANE ISTG.

I want another Will going crazy and just drawing scene in s5. Like imagine him just painting not only what he sees, but how he feels. He’s using a million different colors, but mainly red. He’s going to use red and he’s going to paint his anger and frustration and he’s going to get messy.
And everyone just watches in awe and disbelief. Especially Mike.
I just want Will to let go and paint everything.
