[EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] Producer You Should Know: John Major
Tumblr media
HypnoticAsia brings you an exclusive interview with the producer of "Growl", John Major.
This up and coming producer has already co-produced a number one hit in South Korea after working on just three K-POP songs. John Major has co-produced f(x)'s "Pretty Girl" alongside another EXO track, "Don't Go." His most famous being "Growl" which has taken South Korea by storm with its catchy R&B sound that has you humming to the song endlessly. However, John Major is currently co-producing records with the president of Capitol Records, Ron Fair, and developing an artist who is currently on X Factor in the top 10.
At KCON 2013 in Los Angeles, California, HypnoticAsia visited the "Writing The Next K-POP Hit Song" panel which featured writers and producers of the K-POP scene. John Major caught our attention as he mentioned the success of EXO's song "Growl" and the original lyrics which were along the lines of "put it on put it on put it on me" (versus what it is now, "I’m growling, growling, growling").
We at HypnoticAsia wanted to find out more about John Major and that's where this interview comes in! Read our exclusive interview with the producer below and be prepared to laugh at his fun and witty answers.
HYPNOTICASIA: Please introduce yourself to the readers at HypnoticAsia. JOHN MAJOR: Hi guys! John Major here. Thanks for reading!
HYPNOTICASIA: How did you get started in the music industry? Who has been your biggest inspiration or influence in music? JOHN MAJOR: I started as a rapper (a long time ago when dinosaurs were still alive) and then I became a sound engineer to learn how the technical aspect of producing music works.
HYPNOTICASIA: How were you introduced to the music scene in Asia? JOHN MAJOR: My friend Hyuk Shin [CEO of Joomba's Music Group] introduced me to the scene. I honestly knew nothing about it until he started showing me YouTube videos and such. I fell in love with it!
HYPNOTICASIA: As an up and coming producer, what do you wish to achieve? JOHN MAJOR: What all of us producers want – TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!!
HYPNOTICASIA: How would you describe your music to those who haven't heard it before? JOHN MAJOR: A mixture of genres for sure. I’m influenced by a lot. Could be a 60’s tinged tune or just a full on hip hop 808 heavy beat. Just whatever sounds awesome!
HYPNOTICASIA: You’ve co-produced EXO’s number 1 hit track “Growl” off their “XOXO (Kiss & Hug) Repackage” album, how did it feel seeing the success of this song? JOHN MAJOR: It’s still sinking in so I’ll let you know in like…a month. Tops…
HYPNOTICASIA: How do you celebrate when you see music you’ve worked on climb high on the charts? JOHN MAJOR: I pop a bottle of Sprite and let it fizz all over the place.
HYPNOTICASIA: In Korea, you’ve produced tracks for K-POP idols f(x) and EXO, who else have you been interested in producing for? JOHN MAJOR: I would LOVE a G-Dragon and 2NE1 tune! They’ve got so much swag!!! Someone should make a call and make that happen! Tell your readers to send tons of emails! Hahaha!
HYPNOTICASIA: You’ve produced a hit song, what would you say the process is to fully produce a hit song? JOHN MAJOR: First…you hire a magical leprechaun…just kidding!  It’s almost always different every time. It always starts with an idea. Whether it be a melody, a drum beat idea, a chord progression, or just fooling around in the studio and something just sticks out and ends up having a really cool sound! After that initial phase, you write a song, make sure all the melodies fit with the beat and are all really catchy (that’s important! K-Pop fans LOVE a good melody!). And then you demo the song and send off to an artist’s management or record label, or the artist themselves.  If they like it and record it, then you pray for the label to make it a single.  Lol!
HYPNOTICASIA: You joined KCON 2013 as a panelist alongside Sean Alexander, Automatic, Joe Lee and more; how did it feel talking about your music and success with fans at the event? JOHN MAJOR: It was a really awesome feeling. Everyone was so nice and appreciative.  I felt so welcomed!
HYPNOTICASIA: Did you attend KCON 2013’s concert? How did you feel seeing EXO perform your song, “Growl” and was there another artist who has caught your attention at the event?  JOHN MAJOR: Yes, I attended. M-Net was so accommodating to my team and I.  It felt so great seeing all those fans react to the Growl record. It was an emotional moment.
HYPNOTICASIA: Do you have any other K-POP projects lined up for the future? If so, tell us more about it. JOHN MAJOR: YES!  I have a few things lined up.  Can’t talk about who yet but it’ll be great!!!
HYPNOTICASIA: We’ve heard that you are currently co-producing records with the President of Capitol Record, Ron Fair; what’s it like working with him? JOHN MAJOR: Ron Fair and I are working on his new boy band Los 5.  They’re going to be massive!  Ron Fair is a genius at what he does.  Though he is a legend he is so complimenting to my style.  He really appreciates the modern edge new producers bring to music.
HYPNOTICASIA: You are currently developing an artist who is currently on X Factor in the top 10, can you tell us a little more about it? JOHN MAJOR: Yes her name is Kristine Mirelle. Please look out for her! Can’t talk too much about it until the show is over but she is an amazing singer/songwriter and pianist.  She brings a bit of Amy Winehouse and Adele with an old soul. Distorted guitars, crazy piano riffs, slap reverbs.  Just good music!!!
HYPNOTICASIA: Do you have an artist already in mind when you produce music? JOHN MAJOR: I mainly only start a song from scratch for whichever artist requests music. I find this the best way for me to work.  Keeps the song focused.
HYPNOTICASIA: What are some equipment/instruments you use when producing tracks? JOHN MAJOR: My main instrument is my Macbook Pro!  I use Pro Tools for software and I run a bunch of software synths as well as live guitars, live drums, keyboards, etc.  Whatever makes a cool sound!
HYPNOTICASIA: What's the hardest thing about producing music for artists around the world? JOHN MAJOR: Knowing exactly what they want or what they’ll like.  Sometimes what you like as a producer and writer isn’t always what a client will like.  It takes convincing sometimes.
HYPNOTICASIA: If you weren’t doing music, what do you think you’d be doing instead? JOHN MAJOR: I think I would still be in the music industry in some way.  I also book artists for concerts around the world.  So the music industry will always be home for me.
HYPNOTICASIA: What types of songs are on your playlist right now? JOHN MAJOR: I love Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Lourde, this new artist named Banks, and of course Kristine Mirelle!
HYPNOTICASIA: Is there a motto or saying you live by? JOHN MAJOR: GO HARD OR GO HOME!!!! Hahaha

[EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] The "Ambitious, Cool, and Honest" Ichiro Suezawa
Tumblr media
The "Ambitious, Cool, and Honest" producer, composer and writer, Ichiro Suezawa agrees to an interview with HypnoticAsia!
The Tokyo born Berklee College of Music graduate is known for his work with K-POP producing team Duble Sidekick which he has helped produce for artists F-VE Dolls, SISTAR, B1A4, MBLAQ and more. He has also worked with artists in Japan such as, world-known artist, Jin Akanishi, EXILE, etc. In the USA, he worked with Michelle Branch, Christina Millian and Bruno Mars.  After working as a major composer on Jin Akanishi's album "Japonicana," he is now working with U.S. artists like Sabi, as well as, working with Beyonce and CeeLo Green. Suezawa was also a bass player in Bruno Mars' band and beat maker/engineer for his project in 2007.
Now, Ichiro Suezawa will work with artists like Chad Future, J Soul Brothers, MISIA and even EXILE. With many projects lined up, the producer took time out of his schedule to answer some questions for us.
Check out what he has to say below!
HYPNOTICASIA: Introduce yourself to the readers at HypnoticAsia. ICHIRO SUEZAWA: Hey what’s up?? I’m Ichi, a music producer and songwriter based in LA. I was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan and I’ve been working on so many projects in Asia, Europe and here, in the U.S. :)
HYPNOTICASIA: How did you get started with music and how were you introduced to the music scene in Asia? ICHIRO SUEZAWA:  My music career started in LA after I graduated Berklee College of Music in 2007. I’ve been playing and performing music since I was in high school. I wasn’t heavily engaged in the production side of music at the time when I was in Japan so, when I started working in the studio in LA as a producer, I didn’t do any of those Asian projects at first. At the time, I was mainly working with Bruno Mars and a couple other American artists. That was totally a great opportunity for me to know the level which I have to be in and going forward as a world class producer and songwriter. Then I connected with so many different writers in LA and naturally, since I came from Japan and I understood the J-Pop and K-Pop style well, I got involved deeply in the Asian pop music scene.
HYPNOTICASIA: How would you describe your music to those who haven't heard it before? ICHIRO SUEZAWA:  “Sound of Uniqueness.” I always try to put some kind of unique (almost “weird”) elements in the songs so that it stands out more from other songs and catching the listener’s attention.
HYPNOTICASIA: Has it always been your dream to become a music producer? ICHIRO SUEZAWA:  Nah, when I was a child, I didn’t even know what music producers do for the songs. Lol. But I’ve always had passion in music so my first dream was to become a drummer in a rock band. When I was in high school, the position was taken and I picked Bass instead. Then I dreamed to become a professional bass player. That’s the main reason I studied in Berklee, but when I was in school, I finally realized my interest was always in the creation of music rather than performing music.
HYPNOTICASIA: Who or what has been your biggest influence to write, compose and produce? ICHIRO SUEZAWA:  So many!! I can’t pick one on all the aspects but I can say, Michael Jackson and James Brown as Music Entertainers; as songwriters and producers, Max Martin, Pharrell, and Stargate. Also, as sound design and productions, I’m heavily influenced by Daft Punk, especially their first album, “Discovery”. (I don’t like the current album though...)
HYPNOTICASIA: Do you have an artist already in mind when you write or produce music? ICHIRO SUEZAWA:  For American artist projects, definitely “yes”.  Well, most of the time, I write and produce music for American artists initially, because it’s easy to switch for the other countries’ styles from the U.S. hit song style since they’re so influenced from American pop music. So most of my Asian placements were originally for American artists. And when I get a request from the Asian artist side, I re-arrange the song to match what their market and audience expect to hear.
HYPNOTICASIA: Which do you prefer, co-writing or writing on your own? Do you have a full producing team or do you work alone? ICHIRO SUEZAWA:  I always prefer to do co-writing with someone who is better than me. Of course, I can fully write a whole song by myself but there is no surprise element for the process.  Also, I’m more of the producer type and I always need someone who is really good at lyrics and toplines.
HYPNOTICASIA: Approximately how long does it take for you to complete one song? ICHIRO SUEZAWA: It really depends on the project. Every project has different priorities and time schedules. So even if I thought I finished the song, they usually go back and fix some parts and re-edit or re-arrange so many times to complete the products. Though, talking about my preproduction (demo making) time, I spend half the day to make a beat and half the day to write and record vocals. Then I come back the next day with my fresh ears to edit and mix down the song. So usually, 2 days for the demo.
HYPNOTICASIA: What are some equipment/instruments you use when producing and composing tracks? ICHIRO SUEZAWA:  For sequencing the beat, I use Logic with lots of software instruments and plug-Ins. And whenever I finished my skeleton work of the production, I switch to ProTools and do arrangement and all of the audio recordings off ProTools.
HYPNOTICASIA: Are you currently working on any projects that you can reveal? ICHIRO SUEZAWA: So many projects I’m working on right now! I’ll touch on those projects in the following questions. :)
HYPNOTICASIA: We heard you are currently working with Chad Future, what are the two of you working on and how is that coming along? ICHIRO SUEZAWA:  Chad is a very good friend of mine and we’ve been connected through one of my favorite co-writers, Drew Ryan Scott. Right now, Drew and I are working together with Chad Future to help his records and it has been coming along really well! I can’t wait to let you guys check those out!
HYPNOTICASIA: You’ve mentioned that for Japan you are working with artists such as, EXILE, J Soul Brothers and MISIA. What can you say the difference is when writing for K-POP versus J-POP? ICHIRO SUEZAWA: For me, there is huge difference between J-Pop and K-Pop. J-Pop is influenced by more U.K. pops and rock roots. So the sound they like is usually rock oriented like guitars, and real drum sounds etc.. And also Karaoke is one of the main aspects of music sales, J-Pop has to be “Sing-able” for every audience. So usually Ballad and slow tempo songs are often required from J-Pop clients. On the contrary, K-Pop is influenced by the U.S. pops and hip hop roots. So the beat should be heavy and danceable. And they’re heavily engaged with their visuals. The sound and production have to be something “Eccentric” and “Colorful”.
HYPNOTICASIA: What's the hardest thing about producing music for artists around the world? ICHIRO SUEZAWA:  I think this question is something really profound. Like I said, I’m Japanese, born and raised in Japan so I do know what kind of song, sound, and production Japanese audience like. Yea, it’s in my blood. I’ve moved and lived in America for over 10 years and now I totally understand what the American audience wants to hear for pop music. Then last year, I lived in South Korea for 8 months. I was able to understand what the Korean audience are really listening and expecting to hear from my productions.  For me, the hardest thing to producing music is how I can expand my senses to reach out to as many people as possible to let them hear my music and also be able to touch deeply in their soul through my music… Oh yeah, that’s extremely hard man!
HYPNOTICASIA: While living in Seoul, you’ve teamed up with producers Duble Side Kick and have worked on numerous different K-POP projects for artists like MBLAQ, F-IVE Dolls, SISTAR, B1A4, Tahiti and more, what was the experience like working with the team on these projects? ICHIRO SUEZAWA: That was truly an amazing opportunity for me to work with those big artists in Korea. I had so many great experiences and every single person who I encountered in Seoul was so nice and sweet. I definitely believe this experience which those guys gave me made my music career much more versatile and better.
HYPNOTICASIA: You were a major composer on Jin Akanishi’s album, “JAPONICANA,” what was it like working on the album? Where did the inspiration for each song come from? ICHIRO SUEZAWA: Well, to be honest, at first I didn’t know who Jin Akanishi was when I was introduced from the Warner Bros American side. They thought I knew Jin because I’m Japanese and Jin is such a big icon in the J-Pop scene. This Jin Akanishi project was the very first major project after I signed with Warner/Chappell music publishing. So even though Jin is Japanese and he has a big fan base in Japan, this project was for his U.S. debut album. The most challenging thing was how to make the records sound Americanized but in the same time, somehow make it coherence from his previous records. And since Jin is an artist who is heavily engaged in the production side and has a strong opinion for his records, I mainly helped him to get his song ideas together at the sessions.
HYPNOTICASIA: We heard you’ve recently teamed up with Cassius D. Kalb for your upcoming releases, how do you feel about working on these U.S. projects? ICHIRO SUEZAWA:  So Great!! I’m literally working every single day with Cassius and we’ve done so many great records together in just a couple of months. We wrote songs for Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, CeeLo Green and Sabe etc.. Cassius is one of the greatest writers whom I ever worked with and I’m learning so much from him and at the same time, we have great team work, supporting each other. I can’t wait to let you guys hear these projects!
HYPNOTICASIA: How do you celebrate when you see music you’ve worked on climb high on the charts? ICHIRO SUEZAWA:  Haha! I definitely celebrate with all of co-writers and go crazy!
HYPNOTICASIA: If you could pick one artist to work with that you haven't already, who would it be and why? ICHIRO SUEZAWA:  So hard to pick one! But if I have to choose only one, I would say Madonna because she is always finding out young and edgy new talent and puts it in her records. That’s why her records are always different and still able to hold her identity. Man, it would be such an honor if I can work with Madonna.
HYPNOTICASIA: What types of songs are on your playlist right now? ICHIRO SUEZAWA:  1. Ariana Grande’s new album, “Yours Truly“ (Literally I’m obsessed with her. She’s so great! ;)) 2. Kendrick Lamar’s new album, “good kid, m.A.A.d city” (This album is a masterpiece. He is one of the best rappers. I think he will get a Grammy this time for sure.)
HYPNOTICASIA: Is there a motto or saying you live by? ICHIRO SUEZAWA:  Ambitious, Cool, and Honest

[EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] Heejun Han, "Believe in yourself and never give up trying"
Tumblr media
Check out his interview with HypnoticAsia below.
HYPNOTICASIA: What or who inspired you to pursue a musical career? When did you decided to follow this path? Who are your biggest musical influences and what aspects of them do you admire most?
HEEJUN HAN: Tony Bennett and Stevie Wonder were my inspiration and because of their music, I started to pursue my career in music. I started to follow this path pretty late because it was after I graduated high school that I made the decision to follow this path.
HYPNOTICASIA:Different singers have different ways to prepare themselves before performing, do you have any special preparations to get you motivated prior going on stage?
HEEJUN HAN: I don’t have a special preparation before going on stage but I definitely motivate myself to enjoy the stage as it is.
HYPNOTICASIA:Would you say your view on music changed since American Idol?
HEEJUN HAN: Yes I got to appreciate all genres of music and it’s taught me so much as an artist.
HYPNOTICASIA:Was there a memorable experience you had during the American Idol Season 11 competition? What was the overall auditioning and competing process like?
HEEJUN HAN: Every moment was special for me but competing with so many talented people was tough and always a challenge. I feel like I’ve learned so much from the process of American Idol.
HYPNOTICASIA:Do you feel that the American Idol judges helped you? If so, in what ways were they most helpful? Would you want to say anything to the judges?
HEEJUN HAN: It meant more to me when the judges actually told me I was talented. It came from such people that had so much experience in the music business and it definitely boosted my confidence in the competition. I’ll always be thankful for their help.
HYPNOTICASIA:Why did you choose to audition for American Idol, instead of auditioning for a Korean talent show?
HEEJUN HAN: My simple answer to that question would be because I live in the States. It was more natural for me to audition for an American program than travel to Korea and audition for a Korean program.
HYPNOTICASIA:What would you say is your favorite performance since American Idol?
HEEJUN HAN: A concert in Manila was most memorable because it was our last concert from Top 10 finalist from that season. I can’t forget the fans in Manila.
HYPNOTICASIA:What was it like performing with Yoo Seung Woo in front of 15,000 fans at KCON 2013?
HEEJUN HAN: It was special because fans were very passionate and interactive so I enjoyed it very much. It was also my first time performing with a K-Pop artist and it was a privilege performing with Yoo Seung Woo.
HYPNOTICASIA:After KCON 2013, which K-POP artist would you like to collaborate with the most?
HEEJUN HAN: G-Dragon. I saw him at the KCON and was mesmerized by his charisma on stage. Very creative guy that I respect.
HYPNOTICASIA:How do you feel about the Hallyu wave gaining a wider audience outside of Korea?
HEEJUN HAN: I’m super proud because I’m Korean too and want to be a big part of it at some point in my career.
HYPNOTICASIA:We saw your collaboration with Jason Chen of “Treasure” by Bruno Mars! Are there any other YouTube artists you’d like to work with in the future?
HEEJUN HAN: I just did a collaboration with Jun Sung Ahn, very talented violinist and my good friend. We should be able to present that to you very soon. I’m down to do more collaboration’s with so many talented YouTube artists out there.
HYPNOTICASIA: We recently watched you perform a “K-POP Medley” and “I Miss You” at the American K-POP Contest in LA on August 29th. How did you feel and how was the audience?
HEEJUN HAN: At first, I wasn’t so used to seeing so many non-Korean people singing K-Pop songs but it was actually super fun to perform there and would like to have another opportunity in the future.
HYPNOTICASIA:You recently released your music video for “Bring The Love Back,” did you like the response from fans and media? What was it like working with and recording with Pusha T?
HEEJUN HAN: I felt blessed that so many fans were supportive and they were waiting for my music to come out for such a long time. Working with Pusha T was fun and he’s such a great artist to work with. I’ve always been a big fan of him since I was little and I was honored that we were able to collaborate on a song together.
HYPNOTICASIA:You’ve mentioned that the children motivated you to try out for American Idol, are you still helping out with Milal Mission in New York?
HEEJUN HAN: Yes. I’m helping them at every opportunity I have and will be performing at few of their events this year. Milal will always be closest to my heart.
HYPNOTICASIA:What are your hobbies aside from making music?
HEEJUN HAN: I like playing sports but I’ve been so busy lately that my hobby became my work.
HYPNOTICASIA:Why did you choose to sign with Polaris Entertainment?
HEEJUN HAN: They were the very first company who reached out to me after AI [American Idol] and they’ve always treated me like a family and saw the same vision for my career.
HYPNOTICASIA:Any plans for the remaining of the year and for the future?
HEEJUN HAN: For now, I’ll be promoting my single for next couple of months and my EP album will be released around November.
HYPNOTICASIA:Is there a motto or saying you live by?
HEEJUN HAN: I do. It’s very religious though. It’s “All for God All by God”.
HYPNOTICASIA:What advice would you give to an aspiring singer?
HEEJUN HAN: Believe in yourself and never give up trying.

[EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] Jhameel "Into the Lion's Den"
Tumblr media
Jhameel's music style is a rich fusion of Indie and Pop, mixing his narrative lyrics and innovative production style, creating a unique sound all his own. He garnered a large following sharing his music on sites like Hype Machine and creating partnerships with Forever 21, H&M, and even Verizon. Jhameel's new album was made possible thanks to his dedicated fans, who for his recent Kickstarter, surpassed the $10,000 donation goal and reached $12,000+!
The "Lion's Den" era begins tomorrow with the release of the first Music Video for the first single "Feisty" from the upcoming album, so be sure to get acquainted with Jhameel in this interview!
Check out Jhameel's interview with HypnoticAsia below!
HYPNOTICASIA: Please introduce yourself to all of our readers out there.
JHAMEEEL: My name's Jhameel, I'm an indie-pop artist from the Bay Area now based in Los Angeles.  I've been known to cook lasagna pretty well.
HYPNOTICASIA: We heard you are releasing your third album in spring 2013, how is your third album  different from your first, "Jhameel" and second, "The Human Condition"?
JHAMEEEL: My first album "Jhameel" was very introspective.  It was me exploring and experimenting with my vibe, my sound, and trying to understand myself and the people around me.  My second album "The Human Condition" was about solidifying my style, giving voice to louder and more relateable emotions but keeping the artistic integrity of instrumental diversity and exploration.  My new album "Lion's Den" is no longer experimenting, but defining exactly what my music stands for and who I am.  It's been tested with pain and time, it's been honed with trial and error, it's been shaped by everything I've been doing and have experienced and channeled into what I finally see as most definitively "Jhameel."
HYPNOTICASIA: What inspired you to call the album “Lion’s Den”?
JHAMEEEL: I think the strongest, most beautiful things in life come out of darkness.  It's through difficulty and struggle that people find their most powerful attributes.  That's what I want people to feel in this album.  "Lion's Den" is a metaphor for the ugly parts of life, the harsh unmerciful periods when you're really tested.  I want people to know that when you come out of the lion's den, you may have a few scars, but you will always come out better.
HYPNOTICASIA: How many tracks can we expect on your upcoming third album, “Lion’s Den”?
JHAMEEEL: Nine tracks.
HYPNOTICASIA: Which track on your upcoming album are you most excited for your fans to hear?
JHAMEEEL: "Take Me Now," really shows my skills as a sound engineer.
HYPNOTICASIA: Do you have a music video planned for any of the songs on “Lion’s Den”?
JHAMEEEL: There will be three new music videos for three singles spread out through the next 2 months.
HYPNOTICASIA: This year you've collaborated with DWNTWN and Giraffage for "Move Me," and released your song "Come and Lie," are these songs indicative at all of the themes/sounds of the upcoming album?
JHAMEEEL: "Come and Lie" is remastered and will be on the new album, but otherwise the new songs are a lot more upbeat than what I've been doing on the side.  Expect more left-field Michael Jackson with a modern production.
HYPNOTICASIA: You’ve partnered with Forever 21, American Apparel, H&M, Verizon, and even Kitsune Shop to put your music out to the masses, are there any similar plans for the music on this new album?
JHAMEEEL: Definitely looking into more avenues like that, none I can talk about yet. :)
HYPNOTICASIA: If you had to describe your new album in 5 words what would they be?
JHAMEEEL: Funky, Dark, Stylized, Mature, Poppy.
HYPNOTICASIA: You’ve said that your vocal influences are Michael Jackson and Prince, who are your influences in composing and producing music?
JHAMEEEL: Oo good question.  The Beatles for writing, Ben Gibbard for lyrics, and Daft Punk for production.
HYPNOTICASIA: Have you ever been approached to produce a song for another artist?
JHAMEEEL: I've produced a few songs for J-Pop artists, and I've also done a little work for some underground hip-hop artists but nothing major.  I've recorded a few indie-bands as well.
HYPNOTICASIA: What artist, alive or dead, would you like to produce for?
JHAMEEEL: Eminem.  I think I can come up with a really cool sound for him that will work well for him as an older artist.
HYPNOTICASIA: How has your background in multiple languages influenced your songwriting?
JHAMEEEL: Music is very very much like a language, so I think learning languages has given me a deeper understanding of what it means to communicate an idea, story, or emotion.
HYPNOTICASIA: Is there an artist you would like to collaborate with that you haven’t had the chance to yet?
JHAMEEEL: I think it'd be a lot of fun to collaborate with Macklemore.
HYPNOTICASIA: What are your hobbies aside from making music?
JHAMEEEL: I'm an origami master. HYPNOTICASIA: If you weren't making music, what do you believe you'd be doing instead?
JHAMEEEL: I'd be looking to get into tech design.
HYPNOTICASIA: If you could give advice to an up and coming singer, what would it be?
JHAMEEEL: The most important thing is to be dedicated and not be afraid of failure, because failure is a very very common aspect of pursuing any dream.  The second thing is to figure out your style and sound.  You can have a great voice, but no one will care unless they understand what that voice represents.  Then you need to find friends you love, trust, and want to succeed and fail with to be part of your team.  You are nothing without your team. After that, everyone's path is different. :)
HYPNOTICASIA: Have you ever gotten sick after recording your drunk YouTube performance videos?
JHAMEEEL: hahah yes.

[EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] Chad Future, "Ask. Believe. Receive."
Tumblr media
HYPNOTICASIA: Please introduce yourself to the readers of HypnoticAsia. CHAD FUTURE: What's up HypnoticAsia! My name is Chad Future, thank you for showing love to my recent M! Countdown debut, I'm grateful for all of your support.
HYPNOTICASIA: Since you were young, your goal has always been to entertain people. What inspired you to reach that goal? CHAD FUTURE: I really love making people happy and making a difference in the world.  I'm never going to be a Doctor and save anyone's life, so this is my way of giving back to the world.  Providing music and videos to entertain people.  I also try my best to always be a good role model and inspiration for people around the world too.
HYPNOTICASIA: Where did the name ‘Chad Future’ come from? CHAD FUTURE:  I think it's really important for artists to have stage names so they can step out of "themselves" and become the person they really want to be on stage.  Lady Gaga, Bono, Sting, Snoop Dogg, Katy Perry, Birdman, the list goes on.
Basically though, FUTURE is what I want to represent as an Artist.  I want to give people what's next.  I want to be a trend-setter, a leader and bridge the gap between different cultures of music.  Future kind of sums up that vision.
Chad was a High School nickname I had while doing Theatre.  I would create different characters all the time, and Chad was this outgoing, confident and cool character I would act out every now and then.
I put it together, Chad Future and it just fit.
HYPNOTICASIA: Who and/or what inspired the name for your fan club, ‘Time Travelers?’ CHAD FUTURE: The name was tweeted to me by some loyal fans and I thought it was really clever.  If you are a fan of Chad Future, you're a Time Traveler… Future/Time Travel.
HYPNOTICASIA:How was the experience of hosting the American Music Award’s live pre-show with Dick Clark Productions? CHAD FUTURE:  Amazing!! That was basically the moment that inspired me to start fully pursuing a career in music!  Being surrounded by the best artists in the world, watching them perform, rehearse, set up their stages… it was so inspiring to me.  When I hosted the AMA's, It wasn't just for one day, it was for almost 2 weeks.  We are actually sitting in for all the rehearsals, and that was incredible.  Will.I.Am was "Directing" his entire team and stage production-- It reminded me of exactly the kind of things I do too.  Everything all of a sudden seemed so obtainable.
I'm grateful for that experience and everyone at Coca-Cola / Dick Clark Productions for giving me that opportunity because it changed my life 100% for the better.
HYPNOTICASIA: How did you feel performing in front of the KCON 2012 crowd? CHAD FUTURE: It was one of my highlights of 2012, that's for sure.  Performing in front of almost 6,000 people for my debut performance with my 13 dancers and friends on stage with me was a very real moment for me.  The KCON, MNET, CJ ent. and Koreaboo team are always so supportive of me and I'm grateful to have them a part of this journey.  It was also great to meet so many fans in real life, take pictures and give back.
HYPNOTICASIA: Now, last week you returned to KCON 2013, but this time you were on the Main Stage along with G-Dragon, EXO and others.  You also made your official debut on M! Countdown.  How did that feel? CHAD FUTURE: It's been a dream of mine since I began, to perform on M Countdown.  I've kept a picture of the M! Countdown Logo hung up in my bathroom for the past year.  To see it all come to life was a blessing and dream come true.  It wouldn't have been possible without the hard work and support from a lot of people:  MNET, MNET America, KCON, my team, my dancers, producers, stylists, family, friends, everyone.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
HYPNOTICASIA: How did you get into K-pop and why did you choose to pursue it? CHAD FUTURE:  It started about 10 years ago with H.O.T.  I saw a picture of them online and thought they had cool style. I liked that crazy hair, colorful outfits and hyper-realistic look.  I told my friend to burn a CD for me with their music.
It also was my love of music videos and watching them almost everyday.  Growing up in a small town near Detroit, Michigan, there was not really much to do.  I got really into music videos at a very young age.  I especially loved that 1999-2003 time period in USA when we had those big production value music videos for boy bands and pop stars.
Then, big budget American music videos went away.  Everyone started doing these really small, uninspired and cheap videos.  I stopped being inspired by music videos…
Then, about 2008, while searching YouTube I stumbled about a music video called DISCO with T.O.P.  It was the most amazing thing I had ever seen in my life at that moment.  I instantly said:  "WHAT IS THIS.  THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO DO."  That's the style that was in my head forever, the style that American videos used to do, but went away.  Well, they didn't go away, they went to Korea.
Once I started watching all the K-Pop music videos and seeing groups like 2NE1, Big Bang, I was hooked.  I knew I wanted to do this and didn't care what anybody else said.
HYPNOTICASIA: You have many K-pop covers including songs by B.A.P., Big Bang, JJ Project, EXO and more; why did you choose to remix them? CHAD FUTURE:  When I first debuted, I put out 2 original songs: Hello and Unstoppable.  I was very happy with them and the audience response was great.
I was talking with some friends about capturing more fans and getting more exposure and they suggested we do a few cover songs.  I was 100% against the idea at first because I want to be an original artist and create my own work.  After about a week of talking about it, I decided to do one for fun.
We released Crayon and the response was very favorable. It opened the door to more fans, more exposure and it was also amazing practice too.  I didn't see it as a negative anymore. I saw it as another way I can connect to fans around the world.  It makes people happy and I feel that I can honestly add something special and unique to the songs since we remix them in all English.  The International fans really appreciate it and it's been a tremendous gift in my life.
Thank you to all the fans I've gained through doing my covers who are now anticipating the new original music coming this year.
HYPNOTICASIA: What’s the secret to having a successful cover on YouTube? CHAD FUTURE:  I'm not sure the secret, but I am grateful for all the success we've been having.
If I had to guess, it's just hard work, good quality product and giving people what they want.  Me and the team are very passionate about what we do and I hope that passion comes thru in my work.
HYPNOTICASIA: Has there been a moment in your career that you are most proud of? CHAD FUTURE: Saying:  "I am going to do this" and believing in myself when nobody else did.
HYPNOTICASIA: What genre do you consider your music? CHAD FUTURE: K-Pop / Hip-Hop / Pop ..... AK-Pop?  haha
HYPNOTICASIA: Tell us about AK-POP and how the name came to be. CHAD FUTURE: Basically, I was like:  I love K-Pop. I love American Pop. But I think some parts of American pop really suck. I believe that we can learn a lot of things from K-Pop… I wanted people around the world and America to experience K-Pop the way I was. Once I discovered K-Pop, my whole life changed for the better. My life opened up and I have since thought about life so much bigger.
I want to bring more of the K-Pop style over here to America.  So, AK-POP was born.  It's basically K-Pop inspired American Pop.
HYPNOTICASIA: What are you trying to accomplish with your music? CHAD FUTURE: Influence as many people as possible in a positive way. Motivate, lead and be a good role model.  Also, have a Number 1 song in USA. Number 1 song in Korea. Perform on M!Countdown (which I am grateful to have just achieved). TV show. Collaborations with the best artists in America, Korea and the World. Have a World Tour performing for fans and giving them the best show imaginable. Love my fans. Give more to the world than I take.
HYPNOTICASIA: You are really passionate about bridging the gap between K-POP and American music, why? CHAD FUTURE: Because I feel that American Music is seriously lacking. The music videos are small and cheap, the artists don't care to put on big stage shows, the comebacks take 2 years sometimes, and I honestly just don't see the artists caring that much about their overall image.  Even the styling and wardrobe is lame. It's just not pushing boundaries anymore and K-Pop is doing it bigger and better in almost every aspect. They are imaginative, have interesting concepts for each song and make it an experience.
I want to bring more of that style and performance to the American Market, I think our audiences deserve it.
HYPNOTICASIA: Do you feel your efforts are making a difference in America? CHAD FUTURE: Yes. I get messages and phone calls every single day that go something like this:
"Hey Chad, at first I thought you were crazy with all this K-Pop stuff.  I didn't understand it, but I still respected you.  Recently, I went to a K-Pop concert and I was blown away!! I TOTALLY see what you fell in love with now!  Now, I love it too!  Me and my roommate are blasting K-Pop through our dorm room right now!  I'm Inspired, thank you for introducing me to K-Pop." Something like that.
I honestly just want to spread the culture, music and love of K-Pop to the world.  I hope even more people in USA discover it through my music.
HYPNOTICASIA: You see K-pop artists performing here in America all the time; do you believe this is helping them get recognized by American producers? CHAD FUTURE:  Of course! I hear stories every day of K-Pop groups coming to America and all of a sudden, a famous producer or Artist is meeting with them.  It's great exposure for them, but I want to really help them more here in USA.
This might be a controversial thing to say, but I think the whole T-ara N4 situation was handled so, so terribly by their American management team.
First off, the whole Chris Brown thing was hard to watch-- he invited them to a Las Vegas Hotel Pool Party, got them all excited about performing, and then turned off their song half way through while they were on stage.  (Video here: http://youtu.be/f4TPM41B6fE)
That was very careless and showed no respect for K-Pop or the culture.  So, K-Pop groups need culturally aware management that can help them navigate the murky waters if they hope to succeed in America.  Again, I hope I can help them to align with the right people and make good decisions while in USA. I just want to spread the love of K-Pop to the world anyway I can.
HYPNOTICASIA: What is it like working with fellow artist Drew Ryan Scott? CHAD FUTURE:  Drew Ryan Scott is not only one of my best friends, but one of the most talented song writers/producers in the world.  I really believe that.  Drew will walk into the studio (most of the time late! haha) hear the song once, make up a hook and melody on the spot, get into the recording booth and have a demo tracked out in 5 minutes. It's one of the most incredible things I've ever seen.  Every thing he touches sounds like a "Radio Song", everything.  Drew IS music.
I'm really grateful to be working with him. He's been supportive of me since the very beginning, even when other people weren't… I appreciate that so much.
HYPNOTICASIA: Which K-pop artist do you want to collaborate most with and why? CHAD FUTURE:
- B.A.P - In my opinion, they are leaders of the next generation of Boy Bands. I also heard they loved my "One Shot" remix, so I'd like work with all of the members, or just one member, on a song.
- Jay Park - He's so versatile, speaks both languages, amazing Rapper and Singer and we share a similar style.
- VIXX - I've been watching them since their debut and they work so hard to have unique concepts and powerful performances.  They are very talented performers.
- G-Dragon - He's an icon in music, style and a visionary.  He really loves music and works so hard.  I would be honored to collaborate on a song with him.
- T.O.P - He performs with such charisma, and is powerful just standing still. I think it would be interesting to work with him.
- CL - She's one of the most talented females in K-Pop today, in my opinion. She speaks English and Korean, can rap and sing, dance and understands the global music culture.
- Minzy - She's very under-rated in 2NE1 and I would like to work with her so she could have a more solo opportunity to shine. She is a talented dancer, singer and even producer. I really believe Minzy will have some amazing years coming up!!
- Sistar 19 - I had the pleasure of meeting them in Las Vegas a few years back and they were so fun, nice and great people.  Their talents in singing and dancing is obvious too.
- HyunA - HyunA always knows how to spark a conversation and controversy-- I like how passionate people get about HyunA… and, her concept is always so colorful, young, cool.
- BTS - They are an amazing new Boy Group that I believe has potential to be at the top.  They also focus a lot of rapping with American style. I feel like we would get along well.
- EXO - Every time I see them perform live, I am always blown away.  They are so synchronized and tight in their performances.  They are extremely well trained and It would be an honor to collaborate with any of the members.  People also say that I look like Kris, so it would be amazing to do a song and video together… see how similar we really look on camera together. haha.
- Teen Top - I just think they have a lot of swag and talent.  I've been a fan of teen top since their debut and watched them closely.  They are really cool and good performers.
- f(x) Amber - Amber is a friend of mine and one of the nicest people in the world.  She's very fun loving, silly, cool and works very hard.  I'd like to show the world how amazing her singing voice is.
- Crayon Pop - They are just fun.  It would be fun to collaborate with them-- they are not afraid of outside the box ideas too.  I think they are going to keep gaining more popularity around the world.
- Ailee - Her voice is incredible, she's bilingual and cares deeply about her performance.  She works so hard and I believe our voices would fit perfect together on a song.  Like a Jay-Z / Beyonce vibe.
- Girls' Generation - They are legends and I love watching them perform.  I'd be happy to collaborate with any of the members.  I think TaeYeon and Sunny are my favorites.
- SHINee - They have some of the most powerful vocals and dancing in the history of K-Pop.  Period.
- A Pink - I love their cute concept, they completely own it.  They haven't tried to change their image much since debut and I think they have finally "Perfected" the cute concept and sound.  They are very fun to watch perform.
- Girls Day - They always look like they are having fun together on stage.  I think it would be really fun to work together.
- MBLAQ - I also got to hang out with them in Las Vegas a few years back and they are so cool!  Some of the best personalities in K-Pop.
- miss A Min - Min is a real talent.  She has an amazing voice, dancing skills and a very cool style.  I believe we could collaborate on a song together that would really show off some of the skills and style she has outside of Miss A.
HYPNOTICASIA: We heard you were producing a 5-track EP, tell us more about it. Release date? Were all the songs written by you? CHAD FUTURE: The next original songs you will see from me will be Singles with Music Videos.  The EP and album will come after a few more singles are released.
HYPNOTICASIA: Any special features to look forward to on your upcoming EP (singles)? CHAD FUTURE: There will be several collaborations with K-Pop artists coming up.  Please look forward to it :)
HYPNOTICASIA: If you could give advice to an up and coming artist, what would it be? CHAD FUTURE:  Create a YouTube channel, post new videos every week, be highly interactive with your fans. (Remember, THEY are the reason for your success.)
Treat everyone good.  Be a good person.  Give back all you can.  Be self-less.  Lose your ego.  Work hard.  Always keep training.  Build a good supportive team.  Think big.  Be fearless.  Believe you can do it.  Always follow back :) haha
HYPNOTICASIA: Do you have a motto or saying you live by? CHAD FUTURE: Ask. Believe. Receive.
That means, ask for what you want.  Believe you can have it.  Wait to receive it.
Every single time you use this formula it will happen for you, like magic.
HYPNOTICASIA: Who or what are you most thankful for? CHAD FUTURE: I am so thankful for my fans around the world for always showing me love and support.
I'm so grateful for my family, friends and members of my team.  Together with them, I really feel like we can achieve and do anything we believe!
I'm thankful to MNET, KCON and MNET America team for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to live my dreams.
I'm thankful for anyone reading this article for taking time to learn more about me and my music.
I'm thankful for Detroit, Michigan for making me strong, humble and hard working.
HYPNOTICASIA: What is your favorite K-pop song at the moment? CHAD FUTURE:  G-Dragon's new album sounds amazing!
HYPNOTICASIA: My celebrity crush is… CHAD FUTURE:  Too many… I also don't wanna name names because if they ever read this it will be awkward when we meet :)

[ALBUM REVIEW] Verseatile "Good Mourning"
Tumblr media
As you can see in the image above, the artist is ready to distribute his album and posters to the world. Not only does the album look amazing but it also sounds great. The songs and lyrics tell the story of his life and if you thought you learned a lot about Verseatile through the interview with us, you'll learn even more through the upcoming 14-track album.
After listening to the album many times, you realize he has revealed some of these songs to the world in the past but now, it's all together in one amazing album along with new songs. Every track on the album produced by his longtime producer J-Phonics and he did an amazing job with this project.
Verseatile of course writes all the songs and shows his amazing rap, lyrics and even his vocals through some of the tracks. He features fellow artists MC Jin and Traphik as well as some of his talented friends from church, Tim Pae and Suejin.
Check out the album review below and be sure to support Verseatile at KOLLABORATION LA on July 26, 2013.  Be sure to listen to his half of the album already uploaded through his YouTube and his 2nd half of the album will not disappoint you.
1. Loving You Is Wrong:  his song serves as an introduction to who Verseatile is as an artist. Verseatile raps over a sample of Luther Ingrams’ “If Loving You Is Wrong” with lyrics about his journey as a hip-hop artist. “Loving You Is Wrong” was released 11 months ago and is produced by J-Phonics who worked on Verseatile's whole album “Good Mourning.” The song is a good choice to start off the 14-track album as it gives any new listeners a perspective on who Verseatile is. (Click HERE)
2. Good Man: “Good Man” samples Raphael Saadiq’s song of the same name. Yet again, Verseatile gives more insight on his beginnings with J-Phonics, his longtime producer. 5 Months ago, Verseatile released this song to his subscribers and announced it to be on his upcoming album. He says,“This song displays honest frustrations that one may have in their current circumstances, but ultimately realizing that they don't have it so bad. Rather, they actually have it pretty good. I speak about my frustrations as an artist, where I feel like I've been paying dues, but feel like I'm not moving forward. Seeing younger up and coming artists moving ahead gets to me, but in the end, just as the hook says, I need to see how I got it good, man.”  You can feel the subtle aggression from the track which showcases Verseatile’s passion for his music. (Click HERE)
3. Tragic Hero: The song “Tragic Hero” is one of several songs on this album in which Verseatile shows more of his personal story.  The song touches on the death of his father and his grief. The emotion of the song is delivered perfectly by both the production and the guest vocals of Tim Pae.
4. Troubled Eyes: “Troubled Eyes” contains three narratives about young people who went through trouble and pain which had them doubting their faith. This is emphasized with the profound lyrics of James Blunt’s “Cry” which is sampled in this track.
5. Ride To Oblivion: This song “Ride To Oblivion” was revealed a year ago through his YouTube channel and features rapper MC Jin.  It samples “Use Me” by Garbage. The vulnerability of the previous songs is missing on this track which makes it seem out of place from the rest of the album. (Click HERE)
6. Good Mourning: “Good Mourning” as a phrase was defined by Verseatile as “Healthy Venting.” The song touches on addiction and vices he struggled with as well as the death of his friend and his personal family struggles. The song’s production and Verseatile’s vocals create a mellow sound that lend to the therapeutic tone of the song. This song title is also his album title giving it a certain importance to the album.
7. Beautiful Interlude: Introducing J-Phonics once again though the beginning of his song then going into the rap immediately. This tracks title is literally what it is; a “Beautiful Interlude” centering the album of “Good Mourning.” (Click HERE)
8. The Rebound: “The Rebound” is a fun R&B song that lifts the mood of this album. It’s a song about being interested in someone who just ended a relationship. This song features a rap by fellow artist Traphik and was revealed 2 years ago through his official YouTube channel, garnering over 22,000 views. Verseatile says, “The perfect summer jam for the ladies... and fellas! Summer time tends to set off a lot of break ups & rebounds, so this is a joint dedicated to those who have been in a situation like it!” (Click HERE)
9. Dreamchaser: Revealed 2 years ago through his YouTube channel, this track shows Verseatile again vulnerable, but this time from heartbreak.  What he thought he saw wasn't real in his relationship but he still can't stop from running after her.  Even though he uses a relationship, he talks about chasing a dream and the hardships of trying to get the dream he wants. (Click HERE)
10. Last Call: “Last Call” features vocals by his church friend, Suejin whose vocals are perfect for the track and match his deep lyrics and voice. The lyrics tell a heartfelt story about trying to be strong and the feeling of regret and loneliness. In a recent interview with HypnoticAsia, Verseatile says that this was one of the tracks he was most excited to release as he sees “Last Call” as "quite cinematic”.
11. Nostalgia: Another song off “Good Mourning” that Verseatile says he was excited to release is “Nostalgia.” You can hear his vocals on this track. “Nostalgia” is a song about reminiscing about a relationship that ended to the point of obsession.
12. Forever: "Forever" is a touching song about Verseatile’s mother and grandmother. One of the most personal songs on the album. His lyrics show what we all feel with our mothers where we don't understand why they do things that embarrass us in front of everyone when we are young and then to growing up and missing everything they did.  Approximately 1 month ago, Verseatile revealed this track to the world though his official channel. (Click HERE)
13. Letting Go: This is another song off the album that Verseatile shows off his vocals. Despite the title of the track being "Letting Go", the lyrics are actually the opposite of making sure to not let go. It’s lyrics show the expectancy of being let go and then the surprise of being loved and being held on to. This track gives hope to those listening.
14. Show is Over: With witty lyrics, he ends the album with a bang and closes the album with "Show is Over".  He even mentions Epik High’s Tablo with the lyrics "makes me feel I'm so ‘epikly’ high like Tablo".  This is definitely a great song to end the album.

[INTERVIEW] Johnny Lee, Founder & Leader of 3RD WAVE Music
Tumblr media
Check out the interview below and get to know Johnny and a little more about 3RD WAVE Music and the upcoming album. Check out the article about their 3RD WAVE Music's upcoming album, "Solders Of Light."
1.Where are you from originally and how did you get involved in music? From New Jersey, USA!
I got involved with music professionally when I worked for the entertainment company Apple of the Eye in Korea. It was a new company opening up in 2009 with three A-list stars: Daniel Henney, Kim Hye Soo, and Jung Ryu Won. They were opening up a music division and I was asked to be the Head of Music. 2. How/Why did you decide to start 3RD WAVE Music? As I was putting a project together for the first time, I wanted to have K-pop stars singing Christian and meaningful songs. There are millions of Christians all throughout South East Asia and I knew that their star power could really help people. Brian Joo and I got together and we decided to do something meaningful together.
3. Have you been surprised at the reception thus far? So far, it’s been fascinating! Currently, we are the only Christian band to travel consistently outside of Korea with K-pop artists to do charity concerts! We have been traveling or making music with artists such as Siwon of Super Junior, Van Ness Wu, Lim of the Wonder Girls, Brian, and Alexander. One of the greatest honors was when we were asked to travel with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. We’ve also been invited to Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand, so it’s been a very humbling and blessed experience.
4. What led you to do a new album? This album has more of my personal touch because I sing more, and also musically, it’s the sound I was looking for. This is something I wanted to do before I get too old... Hehe. But in all seriousness, the songs are meant to reach out to this generation. I wanted to keep challenging the people around me - the band, the musicians, and the artists - and to have a platform to keep making new music and influencing people in the world.
5. What can you tell me about the new album as far as the sound/feel? Is it similar to past recordings?
We have a group of new songs. Most of them are worship songs, but a few special songs are life songs. There are about 10-12 new songs and we are deciding which ones will go in the final cut because we want to make sure the songs match our theme title.
It’s by far our best album and we feel that it’s going to really touch a lot of people.
6. What inspired you to choose the Soldiers of Light (S.O.L.) name for this CD? S.O.L. was a motto that Siwon and a few other artists were using for their Twitter accounts. I thought that slogan is exactly what the young generation needs: They need better role models and examples to guide them through dark times and circumstances, so I wanted to raise more S.O.L. through our album project.
7. Who is featured on the new album and how did they get involved? What led you to include mainstream artists in 3RD WAVE Music and this current project? Brian sings “Where You Are.” This song is about all the people who are hurting out there, but despite the hurt, God is always watching and He is always near. You can feel Brian’s passion in his singing. There is always someone hurting and someone who needs hope, so a song like this is there to remind people of God’s love. In addition, we’re singing a rockier version of “I Stand”, but this time, Siwon is singing it. On the English version, it’s Siwon and me, but on the Korean version, people have something to really look forward to because Brian and Siwon will be singing together for the first time. Lim is singing a song called “Cry of Love.” This is one of the newest songs I wrote and it’s about this simple idea of desiring to change the world for the better. 8. Future plans for 3RD WAVE Music? We’re planning our concert dates and getting ready to join different conferences to promote our music and win people over to our music. We will be concerting in Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, and Thailand, so we will release dates shortly and we hope to see everyone soon.
9. How did you feel spreading your wonderful music to all of Siwon’s fans at Super Show 3 and 4? Having my song sung at Super Show 3 was such a great thrill because hundreds of thousands of people got to sing and hear “Looking for the Day.”  It was even more of a thrill to travel and sing with Siwon on tour for Super Show 4. We got to see each other and became closer with one another. These kinds of experiences are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and they are memories that are unforgettable.

HYPNOTICASIA: Please introduce yourself to our readers on HypnoticAsia.
VERSEATILE: Hi, my name is Verseatile. I am a hip-hop artist and a songwriter originally from Chicago. I now reside in LA, pursuing my music career.
HYPNOTICASIA: Where does the inspiration to write your lyrics come from? Are the songs written from personal experiences?
VERSEATILE: Inspiration definitely comes from my personal experiences, whether it regards my family, God, friends, or relationships.
HYPNOTICASIA: How long have you been making music?
VERSEATILE: I have been making music for about 10 years.
HYPNOTICASIA: Why did you decide to upload your video covers and originals on YouTube?
VERSEATILE: I was told it would be good exposure, and because I would be able to do it my way.
HYPNOTICASIA: Who would you say are your biggest musical influences?
VERSEATILE: Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Eminem, Nas, Royce Da 5’9, Ne-Yo, and old school K-Pop. I also come from a family of classical musicians (my father’s side).
HYPNOTICASIA: How would you describe your music to someone who hasn't heard it?
VERSEATILE: It’s soulful hip-hop with deep lyrics, where I share my story that ultimately points to a bigger story.
HYPNOTICASIA: If you could collaborate with an artist you haven’t already, who would it be and why?
VERSEATILE: I would want to collaborate with Royce Da 5’9. I almost did, too, but he was asking for too much money lol. He’s my favorite rapper of all time, and to be able to share a track with him would mean that I’m good enough to be on the same song together.
HYPNOTICASIA: We heard you were competing in Kollaboration Los Angeles on July 26, 2013, why did you choose to compete this year?
VERSEATILE: I think the timing of it was just perfect. I am currently performing with a live band now (which I have never done before). My sound has matured a lot, and I have grown a lot as an artist and as a person.
HYPNOTICASIA: How do you feel competing with so many fellow artists at Kollaboration Los Angeles? Are you nervous?
VERSEATILE: I used to battle as an up and coming emcee, so the competitive edge is somewhere deep inside me. However, sharing the stage with so many talented artists is just an honor and I’m humbled by the experience so far. I always get nervous/excited right before I get on stage, but once the music cues, I get lost into the music.
HYPNOTICASIA: We also heard you were releasing a new album “Good Mourning,” how does this album differ from your previous albums?
VERSEATILE: I go a lot deeper with “Good Mourning”. The events that have happened in the past 2 years of my life caused my writing for this album to be on deeper and more intimate levels compared to my prior writings. A lot of difficult times were faced over the 2 years. I’m a lot more vulnerable on this one.
HYPNOTICASIA: When’s the expected release date of your album, “Good Mourning”?
VERSEATILE: I’ll try to have some physical copies available at Kollaboration, but the official drop date will be early August, around the 6th.
HYPNOTICASIA: Is all the music on your upcoming 14 track album written by you? Anyone help produce this new album?
VERSEATILE: Yes, I wrote the entire album. My long-time producer, J-Phonics, produced every track.
HYPNOTICASIA: How did you come up with the title of your album?
VERSEATILE: This album is therapeutic for me. The title means “healthy venting”. As I shared, the past couple years have been very, if not the most, difficult for me. I struggled with matters regarding my family, relationships, and my identity. However, the album also conveys the peace, reconciliation, and restoration that I have found through the journey as well.
HYPNOTICASIA: How did you come up with the design for the cover of the album?
VERSEATILE: I just told the designer and photographer my theme of the album. They visualized it very well.
HYPNOTICASIA: We saw that you started a Kickstarter project for your upcoming album and successfully reached your goal. Did you ever have any doubts that it wouldn’t succeed?
VERSEATILE: I was unsure of it at first, and quite skeptical about it all… But when people started to contribute immensely within the first couple days, it looked doable.
HYPNOTICASIA: In “Good Mourning” you have features like MC Jin, Traphik and more, what was it like working with them on the tracks?
VERSEATILE: The songs with Jin and Tim (Traphik) were done awhile back, but I felt they were appropriate for this album’s theme. Jin and I pretty much did the song via online and we didn’t get to sit in the studio together, but I’m glad it worked out nicely. Tim and I got to link up through a show we did in Florida. He was kind enough to get down with the joint, and it was a pleasure working with him. The other features, Tim Pae and Suejin, are my personal friends from church. They are crazy talented, and I was honored for them to get on this project.
HYPNOTICASIA: Of the 14 tracks on your album, which are you most excited to release?  Would you say it’s your favorite?
VERSEATILE: It’s tough to say my “favorite” as they are all my creations, but I am excited for “Last Call” and “Nostalgia”. I sing a bit on “Nostalgia” and “Last Call” is quite cinematic.
HYPNOTICASIA: Has there ever been a performance you are most proud of?
VERSEATILE: The one I can think off the top of my head is a recent show in Boston. It was my first official gig with a live band. We were the main event. I haven’t done an hour-long performance before, but we finished it well.
HYPNOTICASIA: If you weren’t making music, what do you believe you’d be doing instead?
VERSEATILE: I’d be doing some form of business, ideally related to entertainment.
HYPNOTICASIA: If you can give advice to an up and coming artist, what would it be and why?
VERSEATILE: Self-awareness is so important. I think it’s more important than passion because if you don’t know what you’re good and bad at, having passion alone will not get you anywhere. Know your strengths and know the areas you need to improve and work on. Drive and passion will come that much more when you recognize the potential you have in your skills. Always be learning. Thanks for having me! God bless.

[Album Review] Jesse Barrera "From The Ground Up"
Tumblr media
Jesse Barrera will be releasing his full length album "From The Ground Up" on March 24, 2013.  He'll also have his album release show on the 30th of March in San Diego. You can pre-order his album signed through his store.
The upcoming album has a total of 11 tracks and features artists Tori Kelly, Melissa Polinar, AJ Rafael, Tim Ferguson, and Daniela Andrade. You can find out more about the production of his album through our interview with him (HERE).
TRACKLIST:
1. Little House That Could  2. Favorite Girl ft. Tori Kelly 3. Saved ft. Melissa Polinar 4. Wasted 5. Promises ft. AJ Rafael  6. Stars  7. Make Believe ft. Tim Ferguson 8. Gravity Won't Save Me  9. Waited For You   10. I Never Knew  11. The Highest Tides ft. Daniela Andrade
Check out what HypnoticAsia thinks of the tracks below.
Little House That Could - This is the first track on the album and like Jesse says in the recent interview with us, it's a great start to the album. It introduces the album with the lyrics that shows even though there may be setbacks, there's always something to go towards to at the end. The song is the perfect anthem for going towards your goals no matter what gets in the way.
Favorite Girl ft. Tori Kelly -  This song was already revealed by the singer himself through his official YouTube channel. This is the 2nd track on the album and it definitely has a catchy melody. The song features talented singer Tori Kelly who is a perfect match for Jesse's voice. The lyrics are really cute and it's the perfect song for a date. You can hear it HERE with lyrics.
Saved ft. Melissa Polinar -  "Saved" features fellow musician Melissa Polinar in this mellow song.  This song showcases a different side of Jesse much different from the upbeat style of "Favorite Girl". Jesse's lovely voice really shines in this song with the beautiful lyrics complimenting both of their voices.
Wasted - The next track on the album is "Wasted" and Jesse's strong vocals really stand out in this song. He sings "every little bit of my heart that you were breaking" but he's definitely going to break some hearts with his voice and lyrics. This song is probably one of the reason's why you'd put this album under the alternative category. It's another fast paced song that again picks up the album with the drums coming out stronger than the other tracks.
Promises ft. AJ Rafael - The 5th song from the album "From The Ground Up", is titled "Promises" featuring AJ Rafael. Jesse says this is one of the saddest tracks on the upcoming album. The emotion packed song brings out the best in these singers and while this isn't the first time AJ and Jesse have collaborated for a song, it is definitely one of the best. AJ's voice blends well with Jesse's and you can hear that this is completely their style. You can hear his release of the track HERE.
Stars - This new original song titled "Stars" is the 6th track on the album. This is a beautiful song with amazing harmonies that make you a little breathless listening to it.  His voice has a very dreamy quality to it in this song helping to tell a story of falling out of love. "We were meant to be great and now these Stars will slowly fade away."  The heartbreaking lyrics and smooth vocals and harmonies create the perfect ballad. He also released this track for his fans to hear. Listen to it HERE.
Make Believe ft. Tim Ferguson - Tim Ferguson features on Jesse's seventh track off the new album "From The Ground Up". This song also has that alternative rock vibe.  This is another amazing song off the album that will make you "get up and ask for more".  It's a really good song to have playing after the previous track "Stars".
Gravity Won't Save Me - Jesse changes up the album in the 8th track "Gravity Won't Save Me" which sounds more mainstream alternative with the chorus being a definite hook. The lyrics are direct and to the point in this fast paced song making it one of the tracks with the strongest straightforward message. The song will have you floating but "gravity will hold me down" as Jesse predicts in this track.
Waited For You - Perhaps the most racy song on the album, "Waited For You" is a song that Bruno Mars would kill to have.  However, I couldn't imagine anyone but Jesse's husky vocals on this track.  "Finally you're mine, no more wasting time, I have waited for this night.  I've waited for you."  This song is just the right amount of sexy without becoming too risque and is a catchy pop/rock earworm that will be on repeat in your head for a long time.
I Never Knew - "I Never Knew" is a standard ballad but with apologetic lyrics that Jesse pours his emotions into.  The song feels incredibly organic with lyrics that seem to come from real life experiences.  Jesse sings about a relationship in which he wasn't aware of his own missteps and this song is his apology.  Grab some tissues because this is probably the most emotional song on the album.
The Highest Tides ft. Daniela Andrade- In "The Highest Tides", both Jesse and Daniela Andrade's voices stand out due to the huge contrast in their voices. Daniela adds a soft and sweet quality to the harmonies while Jesse has a more raw masculine tone.  The duet is a wonderful antithesis to "I Never Knew" with optimistic lyrics and a romantic melody reminiscent of Colbie Caillat but with more depth.  The sweet lyrics paired with the acoustic guitar melody make this the song perfect for a date at the beach and the perfect end to this album.
Overall, this album is a MUST BUY.  Not only does it feature amazing tracks by the singer, but the lyrics to every song draws you in.  It'll have you on an emotional roller coaster going from different emotions in each track. Also, the features on these tracks are completely a bonus.  Without a doubt, the album has an emotional alternative vibe but has its fair share of pop/rock hits that scream for radio play.  We didn't want to give too much away since you won't be able to hear it until March 24th, but you'll definitely enjoy this album.

[ALBUM REVIEW] AJ Rafael "Beautiful Escape" EP Review
Tumblr media
You can learn more about the album, and just AJ in general, in our interview with him HERE.
The EP "Beautiful Escape" features 5 tracks:
1. Here, Tonight 2. Matchmaker 3. Jetsetter 4. Beautiful Escape 5. Goodbye (Chatham Square)
“Here, Tonight”, which served as an intro to AJ’s full length album “Red Roses”, received a very positive response and as a special treat to the fans has been written as a full length song and a part 2, to start his new EP “Beautiful Escape”. The hopeful song about falling in love is a great transition between “Red Roses” and “Beautiful Escape” as the journey in his latest EP. “Beautiful Escape” showcases different aspects of love and how, in AJ’s own words,
“There are moments in your life and relationships that are just beautiful, but they don't end up being what you wanted them to be… and that's OK. You can still look back at these moments and say, ‘Hey, that was a really great time, but I'm here now and I've moved on and life is great where I'm at’.”
The second track “Matchmaker” is a very realistic, yet optimistic, song about letting go. Sometimes relationships don’t work out but create opportunity for new relationships to grow, and this song is a wonderful positive take on that. The song holds true to the theme of the EP and remains upbeat while doing so, but not everything about falling in love is as lighthearted as the first two tracks are and AJ isn’t afraid to touch on the dark side of love. "Jetsetter” is the darkest track on this EP showcasing the not so joyous experiences of a relationship. The instruments help guide the listener through the journey of this relationship gone wrong, transitioning from dreamy synths to intense guitar and drum beats. AJ’s vocals on this song are a bit more raw and the delivery is significantly different than anything else on the EP. AJ connects with the emotion of the song and the story within the lyrics so that the emotion comes through crystal clear. What is also clear about this EP is the depiction of the ups and downs of love. With the ending that was experienced in “Jetsetter,” there is opportunity for new love like what is found in the fourth song, “Beautiful Escape”. This song is AJ’s favorite and serves as the EP’s title track. It’s simple, yet romantic and effective. The understated lyrics of the song showcase an unexpected love that grows quickly. Where “Jetsetter” warns the listener of the perils of love, “Beautiful Escape” is a sweet reminder of how surprising and wonderful love can be.
"Can we get away from here away to a universe that’s not so close my dear, and in my arms you'll stay, amazing how you take my breath away",
If “Beautiful Escape” is the soundtrack to a journey of love, then “Goodbye(Chatham Square)” is certainly the apex of this story. As if written for a movie the song pulls from the experiences of the previous tracks to recapture the love between two people. In the song, AJ is pleading, "Don't let this be goodbye," but the song feels more like a discussion between two lovers than a simple plea.
"I don't know if I can be the perfect one for you, but all I know is that I'll do my very best."
The song's vulnerability and honesty for me is the most brilliant songwriting on this EP. The honesty of the song accepts the problems that come with relationships but is a heartfelt expression of a willingness to compromise. “Goodbye(Chatham Square)” is a unique song on this EP as it showcases a more folksy side of AJ and is a perfect way to close the album.

[ALBUM REVIEW] Mike Isberto "More in Love"
Tumblr media
Track 1: A favorite track on the album is "True North." The song references "True North" or the North Star as a metaphor for the person who makes you feel at home. A lyric that stands out is, "With you I'm never getting lost,"  in it's simplicity still manages to carry the theme of the song but is so honest and romantic it's hard not to be impressed with the song writing.
Track 2: The song "I Can't Sleep" is about being without the one you love but is a more upbeat than the next song, "Lullaby Rain." The lyrics to "I Can't Sleep" are romantic and Mike delivers breathy vocals in the right places giving this track an appropriately dreamy quality.
Track 3:Another notable track on the album is "Lullaby Rain." While most of the album is very hopeful and romantic this song is about loss and grief. This song is very mellow and slow and possibly the slowest on the album. The lyrics are beautiful and his voice captures the meaning of the song and draws you in.
Track 4: The next track on the album "More In Love" is the song "Highway One." This is the 2nd longest song on the album, coming out to be a little over 5 minutes long. This track seemed to cheer up the album with the lyrics as well as his voice. As Mike sings the lyrics, "do you remember how cold the water was, we were so in love, we were warm enough," those listening can hear the happiness in this new track through his voice.
Track 5: "So Lost" shows a different style for Mike Isberto, drawing more from his soul and R&B influences. While it maintains his signature folksy style, the rhythm of the song and the lyrics are a brilliant fusion of his different styles. It's easy to get lost in this song and it's soothing melody.
Track 6: "The Perfect Day," is a great song on the album because not only is Mike's soulful voice spot on, but because you can hear the backup vocals of Kathryn Anderson and the number of instruments - drums, guitar, cello and many more - used on this album clearly.
Track 7: "More In Love" is the title track chosen by Mike Isberto for this new album and it's a little over 6 minutes long and was the perfect track to lead the album. "More  In Love" is a sweet song that captures the feeling of a deep love that grows day by day.  This was also chosen as Mike Isberto's favorite off the upcoming album in the recent interview with HypnoticAsia.
Mike's album features the talents of Eric Kern on drums, Kathryn Anderson singing background vocals, Jason Silber on Mandolin, and Ariana Anugerah on Cello. It was also co-produced by Mike Isberto, Jordan De Guzman and Chad Manalo.
The album as a whole is a great listen for a calm summer evening. The song writing is very simple yet effective and is perfectly suited to Mike's soulful voice. As he mentions in a recent interview with him, "The new songs on the album were inspired by many different moments. But they're all quite an accurate portrayal of past relationships and the feelings that came from them." Mike Isberto has created a unique soul folk album that is a must listen for fans and new listeners alike. TRACKLIST:
1. True North 2. I Can't Sleep 3. Lullaby Rain 4. Highway One 5. So Lost 6. The Perfect Day 7. More In Love
The album release date is due July 30, 2013!

[EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] A Little Bit Of Everything, Mike Isberto
Tumblr media
He has mentioned many times before of how music has always been a huge part of his life and he proves that everyday. Isberto took up instruments like the piano and saxophone at a young age and later went on to play the guitar and stuck to it.Til today, most of performances are seen with him playing the guitar. He is known for his coffee shop shows and feel good music, setting a smile to the audiences face with his fun performances.
In 2009, Isberto sat down with HypnoticAsia for a short interviewbefore his big performance at Kollaboration Acoustic 3that same year. Isberto took home first place that year alongside Alfa Garcia and they went on to complete as a duo in Kollabortion LA.
After knowing Mike Isberto for many year, we can truly say the singer makes great albums and amazing soulful music. From his lyrics to the melody, you can hear his passion for music clearly as he sings.
Now, in 2013, the singer-songwriter will be making his comeback with a new album titled "More In Love" which features a total of 7 tracks. This album was co-produced by Mike Isberto, Jordan De Guzman and Chad Manalo together! You can check out HypnoticAsia's review of the album HERE before it's planned release on the 30th of July.
HYPNOTICASIA: When and why did you decide to pursue music as a career?
MIKE ISBERTO: Music has always been a huge part of my life. But maybe sometime in college; I realized it was the one thing that moved and inspired me the most.
HYPNOTICASIA: Why did you start uploading your music to YouTube?
MIKE ISBERTO: YouTube is a great way to instantly share with fans, supporters, and anyone else who may happen to come across your page some of your new material. It's just a great way to interact with everyone.
HYPNOTICASIA: Who are your biggest musical influences?
MIKE ISBERTO: Some of my first musical influences are James Taylor, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Bob Dylan. More recently, I've been really into Sara Bareilles and Brandi Carlile.
HYPNOTICASIA: How would you describe your music to someone who hasn't heard it?
MIKE ISBERTO: For someone who hasn't heard my music.. I'd say it's very singer/songwriter. The genre would probably be Contemporary Folk with influences ranging from R&B/Soul to Country. Rather all over the place if you ask me.
HYPNOTICASIA: Has there been a particular moment in your musical career you are most proud of?
MIKE ISBERTO: I don't think there is a single moment that I'm most proud of. But I think its a wonderful thing when we can do showcases and concerts that benefit others in need. It's very fulfilling when you know you can help those who are less fortunate than yourself. I'm definitely proud of those moments.
HYPNOTICASIA: What instruments do you play?
MIKE ISBERTO: I mainly play guitar. But my first two instruments were piano and saxophone.
HYPNOTICASIA: We heard you were releasing a new album, how does this album differ from your previous albums?
MIKE ISBERTO: Yes, I'm releasing a new album July 2013. The album is called "More In Love". It's definitely a little different than the previous albums. I wouldn't necessarily call it a country album. But you can tell there's a strong country music influence in the new songs. It's still very singer/songwriter, and it's certainly still me. But we used some instrumentation on this record that we hadn't in the past (banjo's, mandolins, lap steel guitar). I'm excited for the new sound, and I'm really excited for the new album!
HYPNOTICASIA: How many tracks can we expect from this upcoming album?
MIKE ISBERTO: There will be 7 songs on the upcoming album.
HYPNOTICASIA: Which song are you most excited to release? Is it your favorite?
MIKE ISBERTO: I'm really excited about all of the tracks. Most of the songs are brand new, but some of them are older tunes that I've never released (and I'm really excited to finally have studio versions of them). It's honestly hard to pick just one, but if had to, it would probably be the title track of the album: "More In Love". I have a lot of favorites on this album, but it's definitely one of them.
HYPNOTICASIA: Where did you get the inspiration to write all the new music on this new album?
MIKE ISBERTO: The new songs on the album were inspired by many different moments. But they're all quite an accurate portrayal of past relationships and the feelings that came from them.
HYPNOTICASIA: Will you have any fellow musicians featured on your album? If so, who and what was it like working with them on the track?
MIKE ISBERTO: I worked on this album with my usual team. Jordan De Guzman and Chad Manalo who co-produced and played a lot of the instruments on the record. They've also been apart of every music project I've ever worked on.. so working with them was natural and always fun. And we also had a handful of amazing musicians apart of it as well. Including Eric Kern on drums, Kathryn Anderson singing background vocals, Jason Silber on Mandolin, and Ariana Anugerah on Cello. Everyone was amazing to work with. All so talented and so easy to work with.
HYPNOTICASIA: Do you do music full time?
MIKE ISBERTO: Yes, I'm a full time musician.
HYPNOTICASIA: How does social networking benefit you?
MIKE ISBERTO: Social Networking is such a great way to interact with your fans and supporters. And it also makes it a lot easier to stay in touch with all of them.
HYPNOTICASIA: If you could collaborate with an artist you haven't already, who would it be and why?
MIKE ISBERTO: There are going to be a million, but I would love to collaborate with Sara Bareilles or Adele. They're just both so amazing. They're the first couple artists that come to mind.
HYPNOTICASIA: If it wasn't music, what do you think you'd be doing instead?
MIKE ISBERTO: If I couldn't be an artist. I'd love to be a songwriter. If I wasn't doing music at all, I'd love to be a writer. Maybe children's books? :)
HYPNOTICASIA: If you could give advice to an up and coming singer-songwriter, what would it be?
MIKE ISBERTO: Be patient and persistent. Work hard on your craft. And always try to inspire others by what you do.

[EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] DR "Persistence, Perseverance and Patience"
Tumblr media
DR is known for his numerous tracks in Asia such as, U-KISS's "Someday," "My Love My Kiss My Heart," "Walkin'," "Shake It Up," and "No Other" by Super Junior, SHINee's "Always Love," Lee Hyori's "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," "Nothing Last's Forever," by girl group, Girls Day. His impressive list doesn't stop there, his most recent project includes EXO's "Peter Pan" which was recently released on the group 1st full length album "XOXO(Kiss&Hug)."
The producer has also worked on songs for T Pain, Soulja Boy, Tynisha Keli, Archie Bang, DPryde and The Heatmakerz.
As part of the duo C2, DR works alongside 12Keyz and together they have written and scored for well-known television shows including: Oprah Winfrey, American Idol, 90210, The Voice and more.
Now that you know a little about his background, get to know DR a little better with his exclusive interview with HypnoticAsia.com below.
HYPNOTICASIA: Please introduce yourself to our readers at HypnoticAsia. DR: Hi guys! This is DR. I'm a producer/songwriter/dj/artist based out of New York working with some of the biggest artists and producers from the US and Asia. Pleased to meetcha ;)
HYPNOTICASIA: Who or what inspired you to become a producer, songwriter, and DJ? How did you get started in the music industry?
DR: I've been interested in music pretty much ever since I was born.  My first exposure in professional music came from my father who was also a guitar player and a singer.  He would take me to band rehearsals, take me to play drums in his bands, or sometimes keyboards/piano in church choirs, festivals, weddings and things like that.  That sparked my interest in music altogether and there was no looking back from then on.  I feel like producing and songwriting came easy to me not because I studied it, but because my father had exposed me to all those rehearsals and shows where I could see how a song was put together.  What the bass player did, what the drummer did, how the background vocals went, how the guitar solo was played, harmonies, all those things I observed without realizing I was digesting how a hit was created.  I was lucky and blessed!
HYPNOTICASIA: Is all your music written and produced at Diamond District Studios?
DR: A lot of music has been created at Diamond District Studios in New York city, but not everything I've written or produced has been created there.  To me, NYC has a pulse and rhythm to it like no other city, with so much energy and creativity and such an amazing roster of killer producers, writers and artists.  Since Diamond District Studios is literally right in the heart of New York, right on Broadway I think it's a perfect place to write and produce.  But sometimes I'll create my ideas right at home, or at  my hotel, or bedroom, it doesn't matter.  A great song doesn't have to be born in a studio.
HYPNOTICASIA:  What is your daily schedule like?
DR: It varies a lot depending on what kinds of projects I'm working on at the time.  My day could be filled with just doing vocals all day, or sometimes it's just rehearsing.  Some days it's all about producing, mixing or laying down instrumental ideas.  Some days it's not about creating music at all and it's all about meetings with Record Companies, labels, artists or writers and other producers.  I do have a pretty strict regimen when it comes to rest, healthy eating and working out.  Try to keep that work-life balance you know?
HYPNOTICASIA:  What’s the process like to fully produce and write a hit song?
DR: For me, it can happen in a few different ways.  Usually, I hear the full song already in my head before I even lay down one note.  I mean I hear everything; the drums, the chord progressions, the melodies, the harmonies.. everything!  It's like the song is just writing itself and I just happen to be the one that it chooses to come through.  There are also other ways.  Sometimes I hear certain melodies or ideas and record those and then give them to 12keyz or the Heatmakerz, or Ryan Jhun, or another writer or producer to mess with it and give it back to me.  Then there are also times someone will just give me a brand new music idea and I'll work with it from there.
HYPNOTICASIA: What makes your music unique?
DR: Because of such a diverse amount of music that I've really studied and picked apart over the years I have somewhat trained myself to be able to produce in any genre for any purpose.  I think what makes my music unique is that I've found a way to create a hybrid of all genres that just works for the project that I'm working on at any particular time. I also have to wear a producer's hat, dj's hat, songwriter's hat or artist's hat, or sometimes all of them combined.  That in itself is something unique that I don't believe many successful musician's have accomplished.  I don't believe anyone can "type-cast" me as any "kind" of producer, writer or artist.
HYPNOTICASIA: What’s the difference of producing music for artists like T Pain and Soulja Boy in the US versus working with artists like Super Junior or Lee Hyori in Asia?
DR: They are actually more similar than different.  The same factors that go into writing or producing for a major US artist apply to a major K-pop or J-pop artist as well.  You still need the hot songs, edgy production, and memorable hooks and melodies that their listeners expect and that will keep you wanting to play the song again.  The only difference between the two is the way I would produce for either one.  The genres are different, so the way I treat the songs would be different. It's like being asked to create different paintings, except some paintings are for your children's bedroom and some paintings are for your office.  The canvas, colors and media is the same, but you paint depending on where you're going to display it.
HYPNOTICASIA:  You’ve produced songs for many artists in Asia, including Super Junior, EXO, SHINee, Girls Day, U-KISS and even Lee Hyori, where does the inspiration to write these songs come from?
DR: It's different every time.  Usually, I'll listen to what an artist has already done to determine where they can go and what I could produce or write for them.  Sometimes I hear music from a completely different artist that I could hear another artist doing, except in their own way.  Sometimes I just write what I feel and when the song is done, that's when I think about which artist I could give it to.
HYPNOTICASIA: Recently, you’ve gotten a big response from EXO’s fan base for the song “Peter Pan” off their 1st album “XOXO(KISS & HUG),” how do you feel about the success of the new song?
DR: Wow, I am so excited about it.  I knew EXO would do well in general but I didn't know how well they would do with this album until it dropped.  I'm very proud of the work they put into the project, the vocal performances, the whole team at SM Entertainment, Ryan Jhun, Marcan Entertainment, 12keyz and everyone else involved.  I'm also humbled by all the love and support all the EXO fans showed me after the release.  I think it's important that the fans also realize who is behind some of their favorite groups and songs.  When I can connect with the fans it helps me understand what kinds of music they love and how I can deliver even more of it.
HYPNOTICASIA: What was is like hearing 12 member boy group, EXO sing your song in both Chinese and Korean?
DR: I was floored.  I wrote the song in English and with the help of Ryan, had it translated into Korean and Chinese.  I am always amazed how something I wrote in English can translate so well into other languages and still connect.  It reminds me that music is truly the universal language.
HYPNOTICASIA: With 12Keyz, you became the duo C2, how did you two meet and why did you decide to form a team?
DR: I've known 12keyz for a long time.  We met in high school in Toronto, Canada and began working on music together ever since.  Since we have such a great musical history together we just understand each other when it comes to the music.  We do things differently musically but we understand each others input, creativity and participation from every aspect of production and songwriting.  I can't fully describe how our roles change and interact constantly from song to song because that changes all the time.  It's quite simply magic!
HYPNOTICASIA: Alongside 12Keyz, you’ve written and scored for TV shows like “Oprah Winfrey”, “American Idol”, “The Voice”, “90210” and more, what was your reaction like hearing you’d be working with nationally aired television shows?
DR: Pure excitement.  Especially when your music is being aired on such huge TV shows.  When I first heard my songs on some of these shows I just giggled to myself and thought "wow".  It's totally different writing for TV shows compared to artists and record labels.  The thought process is completely different.
HYPNOTICASIA:  Which would you say is your favorite K-POP song that you’ve produced and why?
DR: That would be like asking a father to pick his favorite child. haha  I truly think of the songs I've produced as babies sometimes.  I know they're all special to me no matter whether they are a hit or not.  You might be surprised to know that some of my songs that artists and record companies didn't want became hits years later just because the right person understood the music, just at a later time.
HYPNOTICASIA:  Your music genre ranges from K-POP, EDM, POP and Hip-Hop, which are you more comfortable working on?
DR: As I was explaining before I am completely and totally comfortable working in any of those genres.  It would only depend on the project that I'm working on at the time.  I think when I look back at my career I want to be able to see my songs charted on as many categories as possible.  I'm glad that's already happening.
HYPNOTICASIA:  Is there an artist you’d like to work with that you haven’t already?
DR: So many!  Where to even begin?  Just a VERY brief list: Jojo, Adam Levine, Bruno Mars, Usher, Big Sean, Sean Paul, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams, Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta, Carrie Underwood, Justin Bieber, Jay-Z, Coldplay, John Mayer.. wow, this list could go on forever so I'm just going to stop now! haha
HYPNOTICASIA:  Which K-POP artist have you wanted to write a song for but haven’t gotten the opportunity to?
DR: Would definitely love to get one on SNSD, BIG BANG and TVXQ!
HYPNOTICASIA:  If you can give advice to an up and coming artist/producer/DJ/songwriter, what would it be and why?
DR: I've learned to use what I call the 3 P's as my motto while coming up in the music industry; persistence, perseverance and patience.  Along with this you definitely need to surround yourself with the right team to help you succeed, no one does it alone.  Study music, good music.  Remember everything that you hear today is coming from someone who learned it from somewhere.  Learn who your favorite artist's, producer's or writer's favorite musicians are and study them.  Network with the right people for your career.  Always be proactive and don't wait for opportunities to come to you.. create them for yourself.  If you're going to compete with the industry's best, you will have to be just as good or even better.  Once you're that good and you continually expose yourself to the market, eventually, the right person will notice you.

HYPNOTICASIA: Who is your current celebrity crush?
DR: Hmmm, can't say I really have one. lol
