So Much (For) Stardust by Fall Out Boy
Bind made for a Fall Out Boy trade with beardeddogbindery
Christy and I chatted about FOB and doing an album exchange while I was attending a FOB concert - I know there are a lot of Swifties out there, so it's nice to also bump into another FOB and be able to do a small trade together ((if there are more Fall Out Boy fans out there, don't be shy let us know))
Christy told me that she hasn't really listened to much of the newer Fall Out Boy stuff - I knew that lot of the older fans didn't like any of FOB's post-hiatus works. SMFS was described by FOB as "[the album] sounds closer to a continuation of their 2008 record Folie à Deux", which I thought might be a good "re-introduction" into FOB's newer music. I also really really really really like this album myself lmfao.
✦ illustrations are done on Procreate, everything was typesetted on Clip Studio Paint 0/10 I do not recommend typesetting on CSP lmfao ✦ Printed on A4 folio and then cut down to 148x148 mm because I wanted the lyrics book to be square and resemble an album ✦ original album cover features a painted dog. Christy has two VERY ADORABLE puppers. The only logical approach here is to draw one of her dogs and slap it onto the cover ✦ Dog illustration + endpapers + title page + some other pages are foiled using black foil! It was my first time working with black foil. It's very subtle ✦ Backside text is done on holographic reflective HTV, to add a bit of surprise effect and make it glow like a star
Please go check out @beardedogbindery's page for her two adorable quarto binds (I got two binds. two!!!)
So Much (For) Stardust typeset will be available at request for personal binding too! .

CROCHET IS NOT FEMININE
KNITTING IS NOT FEMININE
FIBER ARTS ARE NOT INHERENTLY FEMININE
The insistence of everyone, even nonbinary people, to gender every activity and object makes me SICK!!!
IT MAKES NO SENSE!!! What the hell is even the justification for it?? Historical gender roles?? Right, I forgot we *love* those (sarcastic).

First finished project of the new year-- a Tunisian crochet case for my crochet tools!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A quick overview of the pockets / design:
The right side is for hooks, and has sectioned off sleeves inside the pocket for each one. I'm hanging my stitch markers from the flap since it's stitches and a convenient place to put them. The top one on the left is for scissors and has extra padding to prevent them from stabbing through. The middle one is for scrap yarn and has my yarn needles threaded through the outside of the pocket. The bottom is a more general pocket which currently holds a measuring tape, a yarn cutter, and some safety pins. The flap on the left edge is partially to keep the scissors from sliding out but is also how the case closes-- I slide the right side under the flap and friction holds it shut pretty well. I may add buttons later on.
Overall I'm decently happy with it, since it holds exactly what I need and has been working well form me

"when i sing, you sing harmonies" binding
A year and a half ago, the wonderful @leblonde gave general binding permission for her fics. This is the second in my project to bind some of my favorites
Presenting, "when i sing, you sing harmonies" by leblonde fanbinding:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gonna wax poetic about my design decisions and future plans under the cut:
I was torn between sticking to a pastel look and feel for the bakery aspect and sticking with the fic's color symbolism (if you don't know: there's magical baked goods, and the feelings they produce correspond to colors). I managed to strike a balance with this fabric from a second-hand craft shop in a peachy color I thought might pass for the color of "musicality." I just happened to have rainbow scrapbook paper, so it went as a stand-in for the color of "happiness"
The bookmark is a little thing I tatted. The white color is of course meant to reference "confidence." I thought the lace detail would fit the frilly look I wanted to invoke the feeling of the bakery.
Fonts are Freestyle Script (headings, for the frilly script) and Garamond (a solid serif for readability). And of course there's a moth on the title page for Dan's aura.
In case you're wondering how long this comes out to in print (quarto, 10 or 11 point font, breaking to a new page where there's scene breaks + a few pages at beginning and end of book info): it's 223. Holy cow. That's a novel. I remain eternally impressed by leblonde's writing
I'm not going to have a chance to bind for a little while (at least until March, with some school obligations I've got going on). I'm hoping to do more journal binding projects next semester for practice and then return to this project after I graduate (probably after July)

"you're always busy being make-believe" binding
A year and a half ago, the wonderful @leblonde gave general binding permission for her fics. And I finally got around to starting a project to bind some of my favorites :)
Here's her fic "you're always busy being make-believe" as I have bound it:

Under the cut I'm gonna wax poetic about some of my design decisions
I was debating between green and black for the bookcloth (to match Phil's costumes) but I then stumbled upon this wonderful iridescent green-black fabric in a second-hand craft store and knew it was perfect.
The endpapers are black with a very faint spiderweb design (since radioactive spiders get some credit for Phil's superpowers in the fic)
We've got "business-y" fonts to match the office setting and a briefcase on the title page to represent the one that holds Dan's research in the fic.
Overall, it's not a perfect binding. I'm still learning a lot and slowly improving with each bind. My goal is to bind all of my favorite leblonde fics within a couple years, with more binds in between for practice
As for right now: I've got one more fic by her in the works to post sometime next week, and then I'll be binding more works sometime in the summer or fall of 2024 (gotta graduate college first)

Bookbound some journals
These were a Christmas / Birthday/ 1 year on T gift for my roommate!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
More about the details under the cut
The bookcloth was actually parts of a shirt and pants that they cut up for an Ash Williams drag costume. They threw the pieces at me and said "here you can do something with this" and I immediately had the idea
The endpapers and bookmarks are green because that's the color they chose. The bookmarks are handmade tatting lace
The embellishments on the pages are a beetle for their bug tattoos and a plant for their houseplants
They aren't perfect by any means-- I need to seriously invest in a paper guillotine, get better at measuring chipboard, and use thicker endpapers-- but they're good enough. My roommate was showing them off to people at the 1 year on T party they had

My first fanfic I've bound!
It's the first fanfic I wrote after a very long time, so it felt fitting to make it the first fanfic I bound. It's so goofy and scuffed and messed up in several places, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
I'm going to ramble about the design details of the book under the cut
The red, blue, and purple bookcloth represent the main characters (Keith, Lance, and Allura).
The stars on the cover are to hide some placed where I messed up the adhesive-- I chose the star buttons to match the star icon I used as linebreaks in the texblock.
The fonts were chosen to look "space-y" to fit with the setting.
There's definitely a lot of mess ups, but I learned a lot too.
I've got two more fics to bind from this batch, and I just did two journals I made as a gift that I'll post once they're received

Update: I've managed to fiddle with the page size, margins, font size, and spacing enough to get it to 9 signatures. So we good
This is now apparently a catch-all blog for all of my hand crafts. have some bookbinding thoughts
So the fanbinding I'm working on right now, if I do half sheet = 1 page, should come out to 19 pieces of paper or about 4 signatures with 4-5 sheets per signatures
But thats going to be hecking tiny for a flatback case binding. But I don't really want to do an open spine on this so im going to have to suck it up and get good at measurements Unless I try to up the font and do quarter sheets? I should try some test prints. But I wanna nail down my page numbers first

One should always have at least 2 craft projects going. That way, when one of them is messed up and misbehaving, you can switch to another, and let the first one sit there and think about what it's done.

Seeing lacemaking at the bottom and going 💀 I've sunk so far
Detailed answers because these all deserve more than a yes or no imo
Crochet - my beloved. All time favorite and prime craft.
Knitting - tried once. Scared to attempt again. So no.
Sewing - like I understand some very basic hand and machine sewing. Hand sewing idk any real stitches but I can make the fabric stay together. Sewing... I'm actively making a really shitty mascot costume right now? If that counts?
Jewelry- I've gotten to basic wire seed bead necklaces and would love to do more.
Embroidery - I think it's badass but idk if I could ever manage it
Mending - it can stay together, and it will if I have anything to say about it. Don't look at my stitches.
Felting - no, seems dangerous.
Macrame not specifically but I feel like I could pick it up easily based on my childhood experience with paracord and friendship bracelets + my current tatting experience
Quilting - never finished my first quilt. It sits in a place I do not want to return. Physically. It's at my mother's house.
Tunisian crochet - taught myself a few basic stitches and want to get into it more. But cannot justify buying Tunisian hooks when I'm actively living between three states.
Knitting machine - nope
Rug hooking - yes I have the skill. Will I ever finish the edges of that one kit project I did? Who knows
Weaving - nope
Wool spinning - imo this is the Eeby Deeby of fiber arts. A path I do not want to tread. I appreciate not understanding quality yarn and being able to do my hobbies relatively cheaply as a result
Lacemaking - I just picked up tatting and finished my first big project. Which I just realized I should post here
Fiber artist rabbit hole
How many crafts can you do?
