Coccus cacti – cochineal – a scale insect that is a parasite to the cactus, feeding on plant moisture and nutrients. This homeopathic remedy is a small one that is used primarily in acute conditions; primarily catarrhal. Think of whooping cough that is accompanied by think, copious, ropey, jelly-like mucous; the mucous forms in the throat and in the nose – the air passages and it is difficult to expectorate. There is a spasmodic cough that the patient is experiencing. It is worse in the winter and this catarrhal affection lasts until warmer weather comes. Exposure to cold aggravates this patient and they get sick from it, yet they are worse in a warm room while sick and better in the cold weather; a paradoxical expression. They feel better from drinking cold drinks. They feel worse from exertion and from getting heated. There is a rawness in the throat and it tickles when getting into bed causing cough. There’s a feeling of a crumb in the throat and causes one to cough. The cough comes on in paroxysms that is accompanied by retching, vomiting or choking. When there is vomiting from such a cough, it is clear, copious and ropy. Since there is copious ropy mucus, it clogs the ears and one’s hearing may become impaired. When do you need to treat a cold? As a homeopath, I DO NOT reach for a homeopathic remedy unless it’s necessary. When does it become necessary? When other “treatments” like rest, and TLC aren’t working. When the patient gets “stuck” ie. when their symptoms are preventing them from getting better (when sleep is disturbed, when the appetite is decreased); that is when a homeopathic remedy should be sought. OK, now that we have that straightened out, let’s talk about selecting a remedy. How do we know which symptoms to prescribe on? We want to look for symptoms in our patients that are different from how they normally present. This means that if a patient is normally cold but in the case of an illness, they’re sweating and want to remove all of their clothes, that’s probably a good symptom to look at. If a patient is normally thirsty but during their illness, they are thirstless and averse to any kind of fluid intake, that’s a good symptom to take into consideration. If the patient has strong symptoms that are making them feel unwell, those symptoms should be examined. Their mental/emotional state is important during an illness too – if normally the patient is happy and cheery but in a state of illness, they are weepy, paranoid or angry…those symptoms should be taken into consideration with the prescription. Finally, keep in mind that symptoms are not bad! Symptoms are the way our body tells us “there’s something wrong”. We have the ability to heal. Sometimes we need a gentle stimulus like homeopathy but the capacity is there! Here’s a glimpse into the world of homeopathic medicines and how such low doses work. The body is constantly seeking homeostasis. In the event of a disease, this homeostasis is out of balance. Giving a patient a medicine that is similar in action to the disease itself creates a stronger reaction within the body, which evokes the movement towards healing. The body has the amazing ability to heal and self-regulate but sometimes, it’s not always strong enough to do so on its own. The body sometimes needs a catalyst to stimulate this healing. Prescribing the correct stimulus will boost our body’s own abilities to bring back balance. Hahnemann, through one of his studies, discovered that a homeopathic remedy can act on a patient if the “picture” of that medicine is similar to the natural disease that the body is experiencing; but the medicine needs to be slightly stronger in intensity. By introducing a stronger, similar stimulus, the body yields to this stimulus, because it creates a disturbance to the system. Where there is slow or difficult dentition, swollen gums and mouth. Child will grind their gums. Restlessness is marked. Child cries especially at night. Case taking methodology is something that homeopaths spend quite some time trying to perfect. In reality, case taking strategy is a work in progress because each patient is different and presents with specific challenges; as we try to understand our patients on a deep level, we begin to realize that the remedies we examine for them within our materia medica, fall into different groupings.
