“I’ve never truly believed that sexuality defines who you are. I do believe, though, that sexuality helps shape and build who you become. How you act, what you pursue, who you surround yourself with. This music video for “Sleepover” is not a concept or an idea for me. It is my life. It defines a part of who I am today. I grew up a dreamer and found comfort through a safe haven in my head. It’s where I was able to find self-love and feel validated. This music video validates those feelings for me, even if in those moments the girl I fell for was unavailable. I made this video to help validate those fantasies. To create a space for the lovers, dreamers and seekers. Falling in love can be a bittersweet feeling, especially if you know it’ll never be reciprocated. I think we can all relate to that… Falling in love can be a bittersweet feeling, especially if you know it’ll never be reciprocated. I think we can all relate to that.” - Quote: Hayley Kiyoko

“From the beginning of writing that song, I envisioned myself in front of all the girls I had crushes on in high school,” she says. “I remember so well what it was like to idolize other people and look for validation from them. But then I grew up, and I realized: The only validation I need is from myself.” Kiyoko says she was surprised by the widespread reaction to “Girls Like Girls,” but it was an encouraging reminder of the power of music. She hopes the dreamy visual for “Gravel to Tempo” — and her EP Citrine — will push listeners and viewers toward a place of self-acceptance. “My goal is to inspire my fans to find happiness in themselves earlier on, so they don’t have such a tough time growing up,” she says. “The world is a hard, difficult place right now. But it can feel a little bit easier if you believe in yourself.” - Quote: Hayley Kiyoko

“I encountered ‘Citrine’ which is a quartz and promotes happiness and is supposed to get rid of self doubt and focus you, and so I named it Citrine because I want people to listen to my EP and I want them to get rid of their self doubt.” - Quote: Hayley Kiyoko

“I had an 11-year-old girl come to my concert — she’d just come out to her mom. And she felt comfortable being herself because I was myself. That was a beautiful moment. Just being able to see everyone’s faces beaming with joy and pride and feeling that energy. Even if they’re not out yet in their personal life, you can see them being lifted by the amount of support surrounding them. Creating that space and having that opening to become who you’ve always wanted to be is really exciting.” - Quote: Hayley Kiyoko

“I think [queer artists are] what’s giving people encouragement to really be more comfortable with themselves,“ says Kiyoko. “That’s how life is. If you see two girls falling in love and normalizing that, then [people] can go, ‘I can fall in love, too. I can be that person. I can look like that. I can get a girl that looks like that.’ If they see that, then they can believe it. It’s just how we are.” - Quote: Hayley Kiyoko

“Long story short, I had a day off [from my tour with Panic At The Disco] in Boston the same day she had her Boston show, so our teams were talking ― because I originally was going to go and see her show. And then she was just like, “Oh! Would Hayley want to perform ‘Curious’ with me?”I was at a Cuban restaurant just eating plantains ― just like “doot da doo” ― and my team called me and I was freaking out. And then I met her the day of the show. It was so cool to see the magnitude of her success. It gave me something to focus on and shoot for. Getting a taste of what it’s like for her and for her to share that with me was such a wonderful opportunity.” - Quote: Hayley Kiyoko (on how she ended up pn the REP Tour)
